Woodturning: How to make your own carbide tools

  • In today's video, I will show you all the steps from start to finish to make your own carbide tools. I currently have the Easy Wood Tools Mid Size tools, but I've found that in certain projects, the tool chatters due to the smaller bar size (3/8"). I wanted to see if I could make my own using parts available online. I was able to pickup all the parts from Amazon.
    I hope you enjoy this video. Please let me know if there is a project you'd like to see me make and I will do my best to do it. Thank you for all the support you have shown me and the channel!

    Nice job Ed. Funny, yours is the second channel I subscribe to that’s done a video on DIY tool handles this week. Maybe I should take it as a sign.😂 Sure is a lot cheaper this way. I’m wondering though do the Easy Wood replacement cutters come with the retaining screw?And if so what is the thread size ?

      @WolfRidgeWoodworking  Před 3 lety

      Good to see you too brother! I think that's as far as they go in. EWT sells just the tool and it appears to be the same size as what I used. I used these in this week's video and they worked well. Need to put them through the paces to see how they hold up in the long run. - Ed

    How do you make sure the bolt won't come loose flying the carbide tip in the air? Any lock washer or loctite needed?

    • @WolfRidgeWoodworking

    What is the negative rate cutters? What’s the difference between the regular cutters?

    • @WolfRidgeWoodworking
      @WolfRidgeWoodworking  Před 3 lety

      A negative rake cutter has a grind on the top and bottom of the cutter. This prevents the cutter from cutting too aggressively and is best for resin. A regular cutter tends to cause the resin to chip out where as a negative rake provide a smooth finish. - Ed

    For me, making my own carbide tools was not successful. I got the handles turned, the steel ground to accept the carbide cutters. But when it came to tapping the drilled holes, the taps kept breaking. I gave up after breaking 2-3 taps and after HD & Lowe’s didn’t have any more. Guess I will never make a good machinist.
