Hi Phil, sure. So what we are talking about here is the wrap direction of the knotless knot and whether you whip clockwise or counter clockwise. This varies in terms of your perspective so I’ve always talked in terms of whipping away from the break in the eye. Every hook is made from wire and when they make the eye there is a small gap left between the end of the wire and the top of the shank of the hook. This gap is only on one side of the hook and if you make the very first wrap of the knotless knot go over the top of this first, there is an increase in the chance of failure under extreme load. Braid is especially prone to be cut by this gap. It's less of an issue with rigs like the stiff hinge as we use heavy duty mono but it’s good practice to whip around the back of this break first as the knot will be stronger. If your starting point is wrapping paste round a hook don’t worry about the stiff hinge rig just yet. Hi Garry, well you could but you won’t get it to hold that all important curve so it won’t sit right. TBH I don’t use the stiff hinge rig much in my own fishing these days. I prefer simpler rigs like the mono hair or the mono D or the multi rig. If you do want to use the Stiff hinge then try the Nash Chod-Link in 20lbs. I found it easier to work with than the mouth trap and it still holds its shape nicely. Best of luck, Cheers, Matt.

Hi Matt hope your well, just wondering what the best boom material for the hinge rig would be if fishing over around 5 inches of weed? I’ve been told to try a Soft Coated Braid, would you agree?
Hi mate, it’s not exactly a rig I use very often TBH so I’m probably not the best person to ask. I don’t see that it makes much difference personally. It would depend mainly on how far I was trying to cast. 5” of weed is very little. I’d just use one of my standard rigs like the mono hair for range or maybe a basic supple rig for short medium range. If you are really paranoid just fish a nice medium sized solid PVA bag with a simple supple rig and lob it out! Best of luck, Matt.

Don’t ask me how, but I’ve had slip knots come off before, probably due to not tightening down enough.
I prefer mounting the bait like your method in the multi rig vid. It literally never comes off.
Another little tip that I’ve seen others use - after the bait is mounted you can actually go over the floss round the boilie with the lighter. Depending on what colour bait you’re using it can actually tone down the appearance of the colour of the floss and it doesn’t weaken it in any way.
Hi Mickey, I’ve never had a slip knot fail but I must admit that since I discovered the technique of forming an overhand loop with a doubled over piece of floss, then pulling tight and blobbing, it’s all I use nowadays. Not seen the lighter trick but thanks for sharing. I find that the Korda floss blends in well over most neutral colours after it’s been in the water a bit and as the popup expands slowly anyway it buries the floss real nice and makes it grip even tighter. Thanks mate! I’ve used hundreds of ESP cryogens since the launch and they are excellent. Last year I bought a few hundred hooks from Banktackle and their chod pattern is excellent. Perfect for hand sharpening. If I didn't have plenty of hooks in stock, I’d definitely try the chod hammers. They do look really good!
@@matthewcollinsangler yes mate i use bits from bank tackle myself, never had a problem with any of their stuff. i get most of my swivels etc off them they are a really good company tbf.

@@sebastianduran2088 Hi Seb, I spent most of last year fishing with the hand sharpened Bank Tackle hooks and caught loads of carp on them. If you're into hand sharpening they make a good choice and I was able to get some wickedly sharp points on them. I found them to be very strong and reliable in a size 6 so you should not have any issues on that score. This year I’ve moved on to the Nash Twisters and I was shocked by how good they are right out of the packet. The point is already so fine that there’s little point in doing much work to them TBH and most of the time I use them right out of the packet (never thought I’d be able to say that!) Fishing with the Twisters saves me a lot of prep time which is a massive bonus. Hope that helps. Cheers, Matt.

Hi Paul, good question. So I made this video because the rig was proving quite popular and successful with a number of guests and I’d sold plenty of these as ready made rigs so I made a video of my method. Obviously I fished with it plenty and I caught some nice carp but did I catch more than I would have done on a multi rig or my mono D-rig...? No! To be honest with you, I came to the conclusion that this rig takes too much time to tie (even when you’re good at rig tying) and there are better options out there imo. That being said, some of our guests simply wouldn't consider casting anything else out (such is their level of confidence). The most important part of a rig is the hook and I’d rather have ten mono D’s all lined up in my box with razor sharp hooks ready to swap at a moment's notice. Cheers, Matt.

You can use whatever you want to make a boom section but TBH this is not a rig that I use anymore and popups don’t feature heavily in my angling. Hi mate, thanks for commenting. So this rig as shown is not designed to fish over soft silt. I think what you want to create is more of a classic chod setup (no boom, stiff hinged rig sliding between two beads with a lead at the other end yes?) If so, sure you don’t need a boom. I’ll be honest with you I’m not a fan of the chod rig. I’ve tried it a few times over the years in a few situations and I’ve either blanked or suffered a hook pull so I’m really not the best person to talk to on this! It’s definitely a weakness of mine. I understand the principles, I know that it works but I don’t have any confidence in it. Personally I would invest the time necessary to find firmer areas that I can successfully target with conventional running rigs. That’s where the carp feed anyway so that’s where I want to fish. If I’m faced with an unknown situation that I believe to be silty or choddy and I haven't had the chance to put the hours in, rather than a chod rig, I’d go with solid PVA bags. I’m fishing on a silty lake, I’ve used inline leads and done well, but on this lake I haven’t, so I’ve opted for a heli setup in order to try and get bites as I believe things could be plummeting into the silt (this is just my theory) so I thought maybe I’d the lead hits and I have a stiff rig it will
Present nicely above the silt that’s what I’m aiming for anyway! I’m not that confident in leading around for spots to be honest but I’m the summer months when I have 12 hours on the bank I’ll defiantly brush up on this!! Thanks

Never used a hinge rig. What do you fish them over usually?
Hi Dan, thanks for commenting. Personally I'm always looking for the rock hard heavily excavated clay/gravels spots no matter what rig I'm using. My advice would be to use whatever rig is easiest to tie that catches carp from the venue you're targeting, so if you can catch them using a simple bottom bait rig then perhaps the stiff hinge isn't worth the bother. However it does have the ability to trick certain fish that may routinely be getting away with it on your standard rig so the stiff hinge has the potential to catch that elusive big mirror or common that you know is in there but you can't catch! Whatever rig you use check the hook every cast with a good quality loupe, if it isn't perfect, change it or sharpen it. Hope that helps. Cheers, Matt.
Isn't the Blood knot just a Clinch knot? Albeit less turns around the line, but wouldn't the full clinch knot, or even the improved clinch knot be stronger than the half knot? 🤔 I'm still learning about carp stuff so it is just a question. Thanks.
Hi mate, thanks again for commenting. So we only use a two turn blood knot (clinch knot) with very thick/stiff materials such as those used to tie chod rigs. Tying knots in such heavy materials is quite hard (especially as we are trying to keep these rigs very short). When used with heavy monos like in this video, the two turn blood knot is actually very strong so there's just no need to make it stronger. The hook will open out before the chod material fails if you do it right. When playing a carp we really shouldn't need to apply much more than 3lbs of force anyway. I actually have no idea what brand those were as they were a gift from a guest. Nowadays I use the Nash knot puller. That works nice and I do use the additional loop on the handle (I hook the hook through when tightening down a rig). Hope that helps, Cheers, Matt.

The stiff hinge rig was invented by Terry Hearn who was targeting a particular carp that fed in a way that made him very hard to catch with simpler rigs. Even if you’re not targeting a particular fish, it has a reputation for tripping up carp that don’t make mistakes very often. Every water contains carp like this and they tend to be the rarer, more special carp. It can be fished at any range as it has good anti tangle properties and over most bottom types. TBH it's not a rig I use much but it's a good one to have in your armory. The most important part of any rig is a sharp hook so nowadays I tend to use the multi-rig most of the time as it's quick to change hooks. Hi David, to be honest, I stopped using the Palomar knot a couple of years ago after doing extensive knot testing. To connect the mainline to the swivel, I now use the 4 turn blood knot as it’s actually stronger. Cheers, Matt.

Hi mate, personally I’ve never tried using fluoro for the chod section myself. I reckon you’ll have problems forming it into the curve and getting it to stay there. Personally if I went to the trouble of making a stiff hinged rig I'd use a bristle filament type material to be sure it worked as I wanted. I’ve been testing the 20lb Nash Chodlink material this winter and I really like it. I’m certainly getting on better with it than other chod materials I’ve tried. Hope that helps cheers, Matt.

Can you use an inline lead with that rig ?
Hi Kevin, sure, you can fish it with an inline lead, but the spot has to be pretty clean or the boom section will jack up in the air and your presentation will be horrible. I use the stiff hinge rig less nowadays as there are simpler rigs that are quicker and easier to tie and work just as well. I’ve been doing extremely well on my mega simple mono D rig lately. I tend to use the Ronnie rig a lot , it’s my favourite rig, I’m not an expert carp angler , but I’ve had good results on it
@@kevinwoolner954 Sure, I know the Ronnie rig is very popular and works for a lot of people. Personally I don't like it because the hook is attached directly to a swivel. For me, any item of terminal tackle that we use can pose a risk to the carp so I try to keep my rigs as simple as possible. The Ronnie rig was made popular by some quality sponsored anglers as it’s a great way of getting anglers to buy more bits of metalwork IMO. If I want to fish a popup very low to the deck there are better, simpler and safer ways to do it in my opinion. Hope you enjoy the channel. Cheers, Matt.

Hi mate, there are loads of options for mounting a bait, cut and blob, bait screws etc. and they all have their pros and cons. I chose this method just to illustrate another option. No mystery behind it really.
This rig was created to keep your pop up from not sinking by avoiding putting a hole in it, correct? Do I really want to keep a bait in the water to the end of it's service limit? Is it gonna be sumthing desirable to a Carp after 6+hrs in the water? I'm obviously still green at targeting Carp so be gentle... Thx in advance for any logical & or educated responses.

Ok firstly the fact that I’m using a cork ball popup for the stiff hinge rig in this video is just a personal preference. Any popup will work.
Secondly carp baits are designed to be in the water for a lot longer than six hours. I usually leave a bait in the water for at least 12 hrs. There are lots of factors that are in play here but I know of certain situations on certain lakes where the going method requires baits to be left in place for two to three days. At the other extreme, I fish another lake where I need to recast every 2-3hrs because the poisson chat (small aggressive little catfish) will demolish any bait even one that has been air dried for a month and is as hard as a golf ball ! Carp baits don’t go off in the water. As long as there is a bait on the rig, it will catch carp.
If as you say you are a bit green in the world of carp fishing I’d kindly suggest that you steer clear of complicated rigs like the stiff hinge. Does it work if well tied? Sure, but there are easier rigs to tie that work just as well. Why don’t you check out my mono D-rig. I look forward to viewing your content in the future. Thanks for the breath of fresh air. I tied my 1st hair rig 9mos ago. 90% of the fisheries in my region have a rip rap bottom. I get most of my Carp with sum form of corn breadcrumb jello mix in a PVA bag. Since the summer heat has been trending down, I can catch them using a football head jig with a crawfish trailer. I just throw it out like a bait and let it sit. The 1st time or happened I thought I had trophy largemouth bass. Thanks again for your time sir.

You might want to look at buying or making your own boilies. Keep the recipe simple and use some decent ingredients and you won’t go far wrong (remember carp are omnivores and will basically eat just about anything!). You don’t need loads, I’ve caught some massive carp from some very large lakes on a single 22mm bait cast as far as I can. If you want to keep things even easier then try nuts. Brazil, hazel, tiger, and even peanuts are very effective. A single nut with some chops in a PVA bag is a great method.
The biggest edge in carp fishing is a razor sharp hook. Get yourself a 10X jewellers loupe and start inspecting those hook points. Most anglers expect hooks to be sharp from the packet but the truth is not all hooks are! Carp hook damage so easily especially on the retrieve so I inspect and change or re-sharpen ever cast. Even the slightest dink will ruin any chance you had. Do check out our other videos and let me know how you get on. Cheers, Matt.
@@matthewcollinsangler That's the most significant difference I've noticed between Bass tackle & Carp gear is the hooks. I bought sum size 6 Korda hooks online (only a handful of shops carry Carp tackle in the entire country). Carp hooks are the sharpest by far, I would assume cuz their mouth is so soft. I'm sure you know that fishing for Carp in the states isn't common & looked down upon by those who are little behind in evolutionary race. It makes sense to me cuz they're litterly in every body of water in abundance, they're huge and they fight just as hard as any Bass. If it wasn't for UK fishing channels I would still be trying to catch them using crawfish. Tight lines!
@@H8er-Maker Yes I understand carp fishing in the States is looked upon as a second rate form of fishing by many. Many French predator anglers also look down at the carp anglers with disdain. In the UK the game anglers (salmon and trout) look down at all other forms of the sport. Silly really. It’s all fishing at the end of the day and we can all learn from one another if we’d just open our minds a little. Yes, carp hooks are sharper than those used for other forms of fishing but even they vary and they won’t all be the same straight out the packet. Our carp have relatively hard mouths because the lake substrate is very rocky and stony. This makes them rather difficult to catch at times, hence the emphasis on razor sharp hooks. Personally I buy cheaper brands and hand sharpen them but then again I was a toolmaker so it comes easy to me ;) Cheers, Matt.

wasting too much floss on every bait
Having seen many anglers, over the last ten years of running a fishery, struggle to floss baits because they haven't cut enough off, I thought it was better to demonstrate a method that made the job a bit easier by having more material to play with. Besides at £2.99 for 50m, is an extra few cm per bait that much of an issue? If so then use a bait screw.
