  • If you're fitting a lot of tubes, don't be surprised if you run into a gap or two eventually. This video explores some techniques that can be used to achieve a quality weld when dealing with a less than optimal fit.
In the next episode, we will cover how to weld 4130 plate and sheet metal.

Tim, great Videos. Please keep them coming. Also, Check with Jody at welding tips and tricks on filming welds. Not sure how he does it but you can watch the bead go down. and a picture it worth a thousand words. I think he films through a welding helmet...but again, not sure. Thanks for taking the time to spread the knowledge.

I knew with this video title I would be entertained... At 6:30 you did not disappoint ! haha... I'm building my own 1965 FFR Cobra Roadster and have watched you from the Made in China rant! Wish you would have the shop / store open on a Saturday so I could stop by to pick up some items...it wouldn't be much but it would be my way of saying thanks !
And I must admit, I dunk my tungsten like I have the hiccups...

on large gaps take a piece of filler wire and bend it to fit the gap, lay a tack over it, then lay your bead over the wire. you can lay a pretty bead over an ugly gap with this method.

I've watched other videos that use a camera filter and angle that allows seeing the puddle, rod, and tungsten. These videos show the back side of a torch and a bright light, then...."see what I did here". The explanations are great.

Always tack it at the tightest parts of the joint and start welding out, into the wide gap. The actual metal from the rod (the weld bead it self) will pull like crazy when cooling and likely to distort the mating tube and make a bump on it. (I used to build railings on super yachts and there can't be be any visual bumps or wavy rails on a $100 million boat...) Like Tim say though, practice and hours make it perfect.

I agree with the likely distortion that is expected with the suggested method. That width of hot metal will shrink heaps and cause considerable distortion.
A method I have used successfully on wider than desirable gaps is to lay overlapping weld beads on the continuous pipe in the space of the gap to build up the material and narrow in the gap. Build up the welds so the gaps is as closed as possible without joining the two pipes (very important) allow to cool and once cooled down to room temperature then do the final pass of welding to joint the two pipes together. use plenty of filler rod and build the weld above the surround pipe surface.
For really special work, belt sand the welded area to a neat pipe finish and then run a facing weld around the base and it looks like an original properly fitted welded joint.
however nothing is better than a properly fitted join in the first place.
A great series of videos. thanks

All I know for sure learning to Tig is painfully frustrating. Lol so go ahead a big tungsten's in the 10 pack.lol but given enough time the welds are really clean and tight. As for me I'm still learning.

What's your thought on making the bridge and then going back over to pretty it up by not really adding much filler rod? Basically kind of rewelding.

i appreciate your taking the time to make vids, and i knw the work that goes into it. but i completely disagree that a large gap tube joint is "strong enough" or is "fine". it's not, it might be fine in a street car or aesthetic application, but it's the weakest part of that tube joint and will fail in an impact, the edges of the tube are over-heated and thinned and it's no longer a fillet weld. so if you're building a cage that may eventually get used, and your life depends on it, throw it away and cope another joint. thanks for the vids.
