    Thank you, Grant, for making this video. I was having difficulty with using good topology flow and this video helped me to understand it a bit more.
    And for those of you who haven't tried Grant's character creation course yet, you should get it as soon as possible. it is packed with tons of useful tips and it will guide you through the entire process of character creation step by step. so you no longer need to get frustrated with not knowing what to do next.

    I heard an animator once say that poles are okay around areas that are pretty solid and static, so finding a place that doesn't deform the mesh as much is a good place to put a pole.

    A nice shortcut is to duplicate the shrinkwrap modifier and then apply the first one. This is a little easier than applying the shrinkwrap and then recreating it from scratch with all of the right options.

    I highly recommend getting comfortable with the poly-build tool. It has sped up my workflow when retopologizing. It has 1 click extrudes, and you can corner extrude as well to create a new face from a vertex with two joined edges. (ctrl+lmb on a vertex > then drag and release control). Alot less switching back and forth from the tweak tool to merge vertex or make faces from edges.

    Hey Grant im doing Retopology on a very detailed Tree Creature with lots of branches. I have most of the head done except the horns. My question is, is it ok to confirm the Shrink-wrap and turn off snapping then just extrude all the faces surrounding the horns then reapply the shrink-wrap and snapping. When I did it it seems to work just have to clean up the point at the end of the horns. I'm not familiar with Retopology tho and just wanted to make sure that if it looks good does that make it good or should I do the Cylinder method you showed? And one other question can I ignore the quad rule for areas that won't be seen like inside the eye socket? Thanks in advance.

  • @WaterShowsProd
    @WaterShowsProd Před 3 lety +1

    Rather than apply the Shrinkwrap and then re-adding it, couldn't you have selected the vertices of the cylinder, activated snapping, press G and then enter? Or would the issue be that they weren't close enough to the model to snap to it?

      look up face orientation, and see if your faces are inverted, I found that it is very common to happen when using f for face. but if your lazy like me you can just select the whole mesh in face mode and then hit shift-n. : )
