Thank you. I own a Dual 1228. I've watched the video with a lot of interest. I also noticed that the rubber steuerpimpel was missing. Somehow the mechanism was working normally without. But after cleaning the mechanism, the arm did not move with the auto-start anymore.
I've discovered that the rubber cover from an optical digital audio cable had the same dimensions (7x4 mm) as the pimpel. It works perfectly. Just a tip.

Just bought one of these yesterday. Steuerpimple was completely gone. Used the inside of a coax cable, trimmed to the proper length and bingo, table auto-features started working again.

Thanks for the video. Got my dad's 1225 - thinking I will have to replace the Steuerpimpel soon and grease things up. The tonearm falls short of the record. It returns fine but requires a nudge to start.

Great vid. I've had a near mint 1228 for a few years now with a bad stylus and just recently replaced, it operates and sounds pristine now. I also just acquired a Kenwood KD-2055 "the Rock" the platter free spins effortlessly almost forever. Waiting for several belts for it so I can obtain an accurate speed since it doesn't have a strobe, or pitch control...as far as I know of.
The Kenwood has a Sure V15HR-P cart on a standard adapter and I'm having trouble finding/deciding on a quality aftermarket replacement stylus. Do you have any recommendations?

Jim really great videos. I have a 1228 I purchase and worked great for bout 8 months. I recently moved the unit to a different location without damage. I now have an issue where when the LP is over the return begins but the arm doesn't make it all the way to the arm rest. Any ideas or thoughts? Thanks in advance. Dave

Have you ever tried soaking in automatic transmission fluid for softening up old hard rubber ? Just curious. Some rubber types may swell up and become useless though so its not without its risks.

      @JimsRadioShop  Před 9 lety

MercMad I've never tried to restore rubber and I've never done anything with transmission fluid other than clean it off my driveway.

I use this stuff for work and it removes the hard outer layer while cleaning the rubber too. I have used it on cassette pinch rollers too.

That "post" you´re refering to around 14:30 is officially called "Steuerpimpel" by dual itself :) You can easy replace the original one with either a lolypop plastic holder, as they do work ;) Or a more professional way with a inner insulation of a 75Ohm antenna cable, but you´ll need an old one with a rubber type, as the new one have some foamy insulation made out of PTFE or similar which do not work at all. Or you can still buy them as an original replacement....
I serviced countelss dual chassis, and i have a "stripped down to the bare minimum" collection of dual record players/changers. Only 5 are left, in my "best" times i got some 20+ chassis. My favorite of the old days is the 1007 and 1008. From the newer series it´s the 1249 and 601 and from the "little" series the 491A.
I also done a 1007 tonearm DIY conversion from the old style original crystal system to a M75 system with a jukebox HiTrack needle to meet that oiginal needle pressure level of 4-6p. So i can play even my best vinyl with that old turntable without any noticeable wearout of that vinyl during play. I even checked some NOS pre and post play with a microscope and there had been no changing in the surface/groove of that vinyl after five complete transits...
Let´s see how you´ll do this...;)
Nice, nice i do like your way, especially the 2-way cam work!! *Great* never seen this in action like this:)
For 23:45 it´s the "SteuerPimpel" direct translation could be "operating rubber plug" or steering plug (that´s how it operates)
For 24:46 that metal plate with makes the plug moove needs to be all the way cleaned, and do not attempt to lubricate that part. This will result in a complete fail of the mechanism. No oil, no grease, no nothing...just plain metal...

TubiCal Thanks for sharing your experience with turntables. I'll look for replacements for the 'stupidpimple' or build one. I still don't fully understand how the mechanism operates yet but I plan to stick with it until it gives up it's secret. I have some reference material to read too. Jim.

Thanks Jim Lindenas for clearly identifying and explaining the problem. I have exactly same issue with my 1225 ... and thank you TubiCal for your awesome solutions! ... since I'm not so good with improvising, I'm gonna have to buy that Steuerpimpel ... or stupidpipmpel, as Jim calls it :D

Hey, my granddad just gave me his old dual 1228. Can't figure out why the turntable isnt spinning when the start button is selected. I'm thinking the motor might be dead? I'm an absolute ignorant to vinyl and their mechanism, just been trying to fix it with the help of youtube videos but I can't really get anywhere. If by any chance someone is seeing this comment and is willing to help I'd so thankeful. I've got so many old records of french music from the 60s (living in Belgium) !

I think one of the problems is the tonearm cue control height adjustment. The screw next to the anti-skating setting
