  • The Elegoo Saturn 4 Ultra is without doubt the most innovative printer they've produced... but that doesn't mean they haven't made some very stupid mistakes. There's great ingenuity here... but did they get it right? Here I take an honest and balanced look at this exciting new 3D resin printer.

    I have to side with elegoo on separating out the heater. My printer sits in a fairly well-regulated room, temperature wise, and I've got nothing to gain from adding a heater to my printer. I'd imagine roughly half of resin printer users are in a similar boat, whether due to their setup or locale. It just makes sense to separate out that functionality, rather than incorporating the cost into every single printer sold. Elegoo's been the primary force driving down costs in hobbyist resin printing since the Mars 1, and I'd have to imagine a lot of careful cuts and consideration went into being able to put the 4 Ultra out at $400.

    Kind of surprised they've beat some of the other manufacturers to the market that were/are also working on tilt-screen solutions. Not having a heater is a bummer I agree on, but the price is highly competitive. The community that doesn't need a built-in heater versus those that do for location-related weather is decidedly small, though I suspect it was off-loaded as an extra for that reason (get one if you need it kind of thing) even though where it plugs in to actually be effective on the resin is a bit of a mystery.
    That all said, I'd be tempted to pick one up despite my historical stance on Elegoo at least for summer-compliant prints.

I was able to print all winter long with temperatures sometimes in the 20s F with no problems. A quick trip to the local hardware will take care of the lack of a handle on the flip lid. It does seem to me that the tilt release is more about making the print less likely to fail due to sticking rather than it being all about speed. But Prusa's SL1S SPEED printer featured tilting and the marketing was HEAVILY about how much faster it was. I feel this is more of a marketing focusing on the wrong aspect rather than it being outright silly. I would love to see a comparison on if the tilting mechanism means I don't have to have as many supports on a floating model, because the forces exerted on the model are not as extreme. This would be huge.

    The tilt release is the most exciting thing ever for me as a Dice Maker because the huge pull forces make the dice elongate in this kinda non-linear way where the closer to the build plate you get, the more elongated it is along the Z axis (so you can't just squish it in the slicer to compensate), this elongation then has to be corrected by sanding the dice while applying force at an angle, very carefully, and even with hundreds of dice made, it's still hard and I can't get them perfect, only prints with a Form 3 come out without this warping, thanks to the tilt release.
    But seeing the mechanism Elegoo is using, it worries me that the pushing up against the print before pulling down might actually make it worse in a different way. It also worries me that the Tilt Release is marketed exclusively as a fast printing thing, it might just really not help with dimensional accuracy at all.
    Also It makes me worry that the whole mechanism might wear out and develop some wiggle room, bringing the alignment of the screen with the collimating lenses into play, and causing a loss of detail. This wasn't a worry in the Form printers because of the lack of a screen, obviously.

    • @vogman
      @vogman  Před měsícem +3

      I have the same concerns about the tilt mechanism. Usually anything that moves a lots, wears a lot. But it's way too early to say anything about this yet. It's a great feature and I applaud Elegoo for it 😁

      I've owned machines with similar mechanisms. They're fine when they work but moving parts introduce another possible point of failure. The machines I have eventually had issues returning the platform back to zero/home consistently. In both cases this mechanism was the first thing to fail. Personally I'm not a fan, but maybe elegoo has a more reliable solution.

    I happened to be looking for a reasonably priced resin printer when the Saturn 4 was launched so I more or less ordered one on a whim. It will replace my past-end-of-life Form 2, and it was funny to see Formlabs launch the Form 4 literally 2 days later, which is now an MSLA machine that still costs 10x as much. Anyway I will see how I go and whether I need a heater, but good to know the basic print quality should be pretty good, even if one of the first things you need to print is a handle to glue on the stupid hood.

    I'm fine with the thing coming without a heating function. Anyone who cares about their health should always have a ventilated enclosure for their resin printer(s), and these are easily heated using cheaper and better options than one of those heater units. Every printer on the market which has an in-built heater is also very expensive, though (and this one would have been too), and to me personally, it's not worth the money. You can get an app-controled thermostat plug and some kind of heating system (heater lamps, ceramic heater etc) for the same money, and you can set and monitor temps from the coach.
    Also, the vat tipping mechanism has some very solid fundamental principles behind it, so people will figure out to get the most out of it. I'm convinced it's going to be the most important speed innovation of this generation.

      My buddy lives in Australia - very warm climate. But in the evening the temperatures drop dramatically. A heater has helped his prints considerably. During the day it doesn't even come on, but when the temperatures drop, the prints stay cosey.
      I know "Australia" isn't the whole world and things vary all over, but I guarantee if you look through these comments, you'll find more pro heater than con heater. And many of those, like my Oz buddy, live in warm climates, but they've discovered the benefits of a consistent warm temperature. The cones V2 and now V3 avaliable on the table flip foundry discord have walls around the cones so this shouldn't be an issue. Is the vat actually innovative, given that the Form 1 and 1+ had a tilting vat years ago, as did the Prusa SL1 and Prusa SL1S. Now maybe Elegoo have done a better job than Formlabs, who I believe didn't have a tilting vat in their subsequent models, but I think we need to see how it pans out with this model. I honestly struggle to see where there's any innovation with this model personally. Like many of us, I'd like a heated vat so we don't need to use brew belts, automatic filling, level sensor, vat temperature monitoring with a contactless low res thermal camera or other sensors, replacing the -shitu- chitu firmware for something decent and thus a better print experience (Bambu show how much better it can be having custom firmware over what others are doing), and a slicer that can leverage said better firmware. Providing something like Fujifilm Prescale might be useful too for validating actual bed levelling (as opposed to Z height), but Prescale is super expensive. Heygears seems sort of like the Bambu of SLA, with a somewhat integrated system that's an improvement in the experience, but I don't think we're seeing anything particularly exciting anywhere. Wondering if Bambu are looking to take a lead in this space too; certainly hope so!

    Me personally, I'm fine it comes without heating (but ofc it's a downer for those who need it). I'm not interested in timelapses neither, but the cam is a nice to have feature. If the *cough* "AI functions work...or just few, fine. WiFi should be standard on ALL machines >200$ in 2024.
    There are only two things that I'm really worried about: That build plate design makes it difficult to clean/drain I guess, not even speaking of the possibility of resin creeping into the chamber of the screws/springs. And the tilt mechanism ofc. First model with this new tech (at least for Elegoo)...thousands and thousands of movements all the time. We will see, if they nail it with the first attempt or if there will be issues...if it likely fails or tear got impact on its accuracy. Or just imagine resin dripping into that mechanism. The drip tray looks flimsy as well, no wonder people confuse it with packaging material. It would be nice, if you could turn tilting off, when you don't need the extra speed. At least that way, you could reduce the tear. But afaik it's active all the time.
    I'm fine it comes without a handle, it's easy to attach a DIY solution or printed one. I ordered the S4U as my first resin printer, just hoping it works out well (at least my Neptune 4 from Elegoo works flawless out of the box for 800h so far) I don't print much with resin so I won't stress the mechanical parts 24/7...I had good experiences with the customer support so far, so I'm not worried when it comes to possible issues. Some features need improvement, but I guess we will see that with the next generation(s). This seems more like trying to catch up with features at a small price.
    Btw that CEO from Lychee released a "not only hype" video as well...auto translation got some issues with French, but it's a good watch as well. Thanks for this video, I really like those that don't hype products straight away, 've seen too many presale pitches already...this one shows both sides, the good and bad. The customers can decide themselves, what is important for them and what they can do without. And in the end, long term user experiences will show us, how good that printer really is. Sry for the long text...hoping for the best, thanks and greetings!

    Good, quick review with nice sharp closeups of samples as we’ve come to expect, thank you for that!
    One of the sticking points of the review kind of bothers me. You make a stink about a cheap 30¢ plastic tray which is pretty much necessary, and another about not including a $50 heater, which presumedly we’d be forced to pay extra for.
    Why should people in tropical or temperate climates be made to pay for something that they would never need? It being an OPTION is the correct way to go for something like a heater.
    Also, I can buy the same type of mini heater for $35 through other outlets.
    I’ll definitely be printing a very low profile, style appropriate tab for the lid though. Definitely a design oversight on Elegoo’s part.

    • @vogman
      @vogman  Před měsícem +1

      My job isn't to do anything more than inform. I speak honestly and try to be balanced.... I like this because... I don't like that because...
      When I see a flip top lid with no handle, my personal thoughts are "This company had no idea WHY it was fitting this type of lid." The benefit is one-handed convenience. Without that, there's no benefit.
      I know plenty of folks that live in warm climates but have suffered printing problems through temperature drops (for example, a pal in Australia tell me how cold in gets in the evenings). Heaters aren't just about making a warm environment, they are about consistency of temperature, and that's where prints work best.
      As for the tray, I bet Elegoo wished it cost 30c. The money they probably spent on R&D would no doubt set me up for life. And this was for something no one has requested. A heater though.... so many requests for those.
      Ultimately I'm just saying what I feel. I don't expect anyone to blindly agree or disagree with me. Instead they need to gather the facts and make up their own minds. I hope I help a little in that regard. 😁

    The most even-handed review I've seen so far. Every other Saturn 4 Ultra review I've seen has come off like a paid ad. I suspect there are a number of things people who received review units were asked not to talk about. Like, you've mentioned the similarity to the GK 2, but I think, at least visually, Elegoo were taking notes on Heygears' Reflex. Totally different machine, but it looks a little Heygearsey to me.
    Tilt release is something I think the Prusa resin machine had a few years ago, so I'm surprised it's taken this long to make it to the cheap Chinese machines. It should certainly improve print speeds and reduce failures, but I do worry that it might add a point of failure for the printer itself. Part of what makes resin printers so great is there's nothing to them. One motor, a threaded rod, a plate, a screen, a UV light, and a vat. The rest is all window dressing. Adding another motor to the mix, which can have variable performance, worries me a little.
    As for auto leveling, I'm not sure that's something we really need is it? I've leveled the bed on my Anycubic twice in a year and a half, and I don't even think I needed to the second time. Resin printers are easy to level, and they maintain that level well. It's a godsend on FDM machines, those fiddly bastards will frequently vibrate themselves out of level, but resin printers are much more stable.

      @@vogman The strangest thing, and I asked Elegoo about it, despite there being an exhaust port on the back of the build chamber, the only thing Elegoo sells to hook up to that is the "Mate" air filter. All I'd want is a hose with a fan, and a window kit like those portable air conditioners.
      There is, charitably speaking, _mixed_ evidence VOCs are actually reduced to safe levels by charcoal filters, so when I run my printer I've got a couple of filters running inside it, and a couple of bigger, room-scale ones doing the whole room, but I still put a big fan blasting out the window, and wear a respirator in there.

    In an era of wannabe experts shilling their soul to the first company that sends them something for free, having someone review the actual product, with his flaws and all, it's like a breath of fresh air.

      @@vogman It really has more of a lip (Which you did say) that is part of the lid. Not a "Handle" in the sense he might be thinking. But you would be touching the "Lid" with the lip. I added true handles to my Saturn 2 by printing them on the Bambu X1C and double sided taped them to the said - Will probably do the same to the 4 Ultra is I end up with one.

    Having an advertised print speed that cant be obtained even remotely close has to be some form of blatant false advertising. As somone whohas the Saturn 3 Ultra and cant get it to update its own firmware, and now this, I think I'm done with Elegoo.

    The biggest difference between this and the saturn 3 is that it has 2x the ram which should hopefully vastly reduce the chance of the screen glitching during big prints using AA which has wasted countless vats of resin of saturn 3 owners. Elegoo won't tell you about this because they still haven't acknowledged the issue with the saturn 3 despite now releasing a new printer with 2x the ram which should fix the issue, now why would they do that if they don't know that there was an issue??!

    • @vogman
      @vogman  Před měsícem

      Interesting. I hadn't heard of that one.
      But I'll remind you... the Mars 3 I tested had a wobble on the Z Arm. Elegoo denied. Just about every CZcamsr denied it. Consumers moaned about it.
      Elegoo changed the Z Arm... but there wasn't a problem 😏

      @@vogman yeha I've been sending tests to J3d who has been trying to get this issue through to them since at least january, but communication to the chinease engineers is slow and can be confusing aparantly. It took 4 months just to hear back that they don't care about lychee tests, only chitu, so I now tested chitu and AA is fine but image blur 2 or 4 is equal to lychee smooth surface 2px or 4px in severity of this issue, so we will see what they say now. I was hoping that this could be fixed from software but from talking to Julien one of the lychee devs, the UV tools dev, and Jan, it seems like hard ware limitations like the ram may not be significantly improved with better code or making non RLE compressed formats like CWS avaliable. Perhaps they could try 4 bit like anycubic, but I'm not sure if that would work. The issue seems to be something to do with if there are too many pixel changes on a few lines (usually due to grey values from AA) the RLE compression can't compress enough, so when decompressing the system just can't do it and so after those lines it just buggs out

    Finally a honest review and not just a marketing campaign.
    Even at that price I gonna buy a Saturn 3 Ultra used and wait to see what they do in the Saturn V Ultra Plus RePlus.
    My opinion.
    That claim off 150mm/h maybe can be real with a 0.2 layer height.
    Now Elegoo say that the cob fresnel its the best but they drop that in the S3 Ultra for the COB+Refractive Light Source that its the same light source that Phrozen Sonic Mighty Revo 14k use.
    That tilt mechanism its a old technology from 2012 that company's like Formlabs used in the Form 1 and drop in the Form 2. My bet its that Eleggo gonna drop that tilt vat in the next Saturn 5.

    Great review. Its nice to see an *actually honest* review. It seems like this and the M5s Pro are pretty much neck to neck in price and features, with a little give and take here and there. I think anyone who owns either machine is going to absolutely love it. Can you really not manually level the bed though? Maybe its just an unusual process documented elsewhere or something, sort of like Bambu?
