  • The Uniformation GK Two has long been a favourite of mine, but it's 8K 29 micron performance meant that it was falling behind other models. However, Uniformation recently released a 12K upgrade kit, improving performance to 22 microns. Here I put this kit through its paces.

    Thanks for all your vids this year Mr V. Have a bloody good Christmas ✌️
    Nice printer and a brilliant idea to upgrade something that already works well rather than start from scratch.
    Printer companies need to start doing this sort of thing more.

    I ran into the same exact problem printing vertical/flat building I designed... it took me way longer than it should have to finally test tilting the model slightly 😅. I could have used this video about 2 weeks ago 😂

    I did not notice any improvement over the 8k resolution and am not fond of losing the printing plate space. Do you think it really adds that much quality to miniatures for the time and effort and money spent ? Better to wait till my screen needs a change then put the 12k screen in instead of another 8k screen, perhaps?

    That building looked really well done. If you don't mind me asking, how long did that take in zbrush? I use Blender to design my buildings/terrain and I have always wondered if ZBrush would speed up the work.
    I know they can have similar features but sometimes the workflow is improved.

    • @vogman
      @vogman  Před 5 měsíci +2

      In honesty, if you're comfortable with Blender, stay there. ZB is good, but it's fee structure has changed now, meaning payments every year rather than a perpetual license (corporate greed wins again). I never got on with Blender, but so many fabulous creations come from it, if you're happy, stick with it.

    That UV lightmeter/calibrator is an interesting concept. I have never heard of that for a printer. Thank you for the new info. Now my brain is pushing out some math directions to make room, but who needs that, right?

    • @vogman
      @vogman  Před 5 měsíci +1

      The meter is by Chitu so presumably you can buy them. But the variation during the scan is surprising. I was aware that arrays like the one shown do fluctuate light levels in the creases of the UVs, but it's still surprising. I'll have to plug it into a COB printer and see if it's different 😁

    A built in heater makes so much sense. And love the castle tower. So other than the bottom supports the stairs don’t need any support?

    • @vogman
      @vogman  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Yes... the stairs rise at an angle steeper than 45 degrees so the resin printer will naturally cope. The mid-landing section is supported by an archway. The stones are bevelled so they don't create islands. In short, it SHOULD print without supports. It has for me every time 😁

    Do you have any tips/tricks on how to add wood grain, or stone textures to a 3d design? I'm used to working in fusion or SolidWorks, so really curious how you go about that.

    • @vogman
      @vogman  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I'm using ZBrush which allows you to use Alphas to add texture. The woodgrain, for instance, comes from here... www.artstation.com/artwork/w0AXW6
      The stonework was all me as I couldn't find anything rough enough to add a texture that would show at this scale. So I literally added and subtracted virtual clay on every single brick.

    4:00 Any tips for controlling the warp resin prints get like these exposure tests?

    • @RoseKindred
      @RoseKindred Před 5 měsíci

      There can be many causes of this. The pull force from the print and FEP/film used on the bottom of the vat, too thin model so the UV warps it as it cures, but my guess is these were printed flat on the plate and the curling is from scraping it off the flat build plate with a scraper. If it is the last you can reflatten it with your hands before curing, to a point.

    • @vogman
      @vogman  Před 5 měsíci +2

      These exposure tests are very thin and not really meant for anything other than throwing away. For that video I cured them as they were hanging around on my workbench for a few days. Curing something that thin tends to lead to warping... larger pieces should really warp.

    • @EgonSorensen
      @EgonSorensen Před 5 měsíci +1

      About 75% of UVA passes through ordinary glass - so without having tried, I would imaging placing a piece of glass over the item (well, both sides) and then exposing it to UV light might cause minimum warping?

  • @Nemesis-12

    I appreciate the review but it's hard to make an informed choice on the 12k upgrade when there are few videos (from creators I trust) comparing it to it's 8k counterpart. Some people address that rectangle pixels from 8-12k dont merit the upgrade. Im a bit disappointed you didnt address that and was hoping for a more indepth review, can you genuinely recommend this as a legitimate upgrade? Yours and fauxhammers reviews are what helped me choose the GKtwo which I am eagerly awaiting, but I worry that perhaps i ought to have waited? But then I would never get started either

    • @vogman
      @vogman  Před 5 měsíci +2

      I'm guessing you haven't seen many of my12K reviews? EVERY 12K screen has rectangular pixels creating 19 x 22 xy res. This is because there's only one screen manufacturer. So pretty much, it's the same tech in every printer. This means really the quality of the rails, plate, etc, are what counts. Now there are better quality 12K printers out there I think, though none with built in heaters. But this is really about the convenience to existing GK Two owners, being able to upgrade. I hope this helps 😁
