  • The Canon Powershot G7X III and G5X II are the latest premium compact cameras from Canon. At first, they look like very similar cameras with some subtle feature differences. But, when Dave Paul and Evelyn Drake test these two cameras, they discover how different they really are. Watch to find out how the cameras compare to each other and other compact cameras on the market.

    Good Job Canon. Even if it's early days for that bit of software, you have to applaud Canon for being the best in the business for complex features like that (The self calibrating ceiling bounce flash is another great example where Canon seems head and shoulders above the rest of the industry).

    4:38 Maybe the comparison loses something over CZcams but the internal mic sounds WAY better than I would have expected. It seems like the external mic picks up a lot more background noise. Even if the internal mic is a bit muffled, based on this sample it's good enough that which one I prefer is almost a toss up (at least in terms of run&gun voice recording, I'm sure in a studio or recording music the external mic's improvement in clarity would become much more apparent).

    I bought the G7X II used to test out these small Canon cameras and was really impressed with the images. The AF was a bit wonky, otherwise great. Since i liked it, i upgraded to the G5X II. The EVF is nice, but for me the selling point was the new lens with extra 20mm of reach. This makes it probably the most versatile pocket camera for photographers. Of course I wish it had Sony's AF or at least something similar, but it always depends on your priorities...

    Before Canon launched the G5X II I was sure to go for the RX100 VII. My mother is using the VI and that is an impressive little camera.
    What I dont like is the new EVF of the Sony. Sounds wired, but try them both. The older pull out version has a little eyecup, the new one is absolutely plane and so is always smeared.
    So I will go for the G5X MKII. That lens is way more interesting for me, than having 200mm at the long end.

    • @scs6757
      @scs6757 Před 4 lety

      Sony still sells the RX100 VA, which has the pull out EVF, fast lens, and phase detect AF. It's the same price as the G5X MKII.

    • @Benjamin_Jehne
      @Benjamin_Jehne Před 4 lety

      SC S SC S I know the RX100IV and it’s basicly the same like the VA just not that fast.
      The the G5x ii is some kind of different camera than the RX. I bought it yesterday, after testing and comparing it to the Rx IV.
      The Sony is an ultra compact, witch fits well in the back pocket. The Canon is the size of a Olympus Pen Mini (PM1) without a lens attached. So for me those are two different categories.
      The EVF of the Canon looks better than that of the Sonys. Also the display is way better.
      To be honest, I don’t know if it was the right decision, but 70mm is to short for me. I own a RX100 I for myself with its 28-105mm and I don’t want to go under this range.
      Canon did no marvel here, it’s a bigger and brighter lens and for that, they need a bigger body.

    • @shaolin95
      @shaolin95 Před 2 lety

      I wanted the g5x ii but is so far inferior to the Sony that I couldn't. Why why why canon would out such and outdated unreliable AF in newer cameras is insane

    • @Benjamin_Jehne
      @Benjamin_Jehne Před 2 lety +1

      @@shaolin95 To be honest, I bought both 🙈. At first the Canon and later the Sony.
      But yeah, the AF of the G5XII is a joke. The RX is so unbelievable in this department. Also for video. The AF is so sticky, it’s really like the big bodies. The G5XII is just for photographers, and you get a lot missed focus images. But the way you can work with this 24-120mm lens is something very special. It’s not to compare with something like the RX100VA. I hope that we will see a G5XIII with a new sensor and PDAF + 4K without overheating after 5min. If they bring it, i‘ll be the first to raise the hand to get one. I tried it as a back up for event photography and this little beast delivers. Some years ago, I always had a mFT as a back up with me at events. Just something small and lightweight. But there is nothing that can compete with a 24-120mm F1.8-2.8. this lens is so versatile that I often put my FF bodies beside and just walk around with the G5XII. I gave it to my co-photographer to test it at a event and as I reviewed his images in the press room, I could see, that after he tried it the first time he used it more and more. So much, that I reminded him not to forget the big one.
      But I can understand him. This little Canon is a joy to use, way more than the RX100s. Even with it’s flaws, I would never give it away before there is a new version.

  • @moke1310
    @moke1310 Před 4 lety +1

    Living in Australia I would value the viewfinder. Most point and shoots fail in bright light without an EVF. But the dollars involved mean I will survive using my Olympus EM1 MkII and live with the lack of being pocket sized.

Mic-input. Livestreaming and so on. The 24p not thrown out. The C-AF not worse than it was. Overheating not an issue.

      I think we search for similar perfect cameras that do not exist. The lens on G5x m2 seems to be great, but its autofocus screws the camera up. Looks like the best solution is not to buy the new models now, but rather wait for the newcomers. Having in mind the great success of phone cameras, Canon&Sony will have to make some extra effort to deliver the competing hardware.

The SX740HS would seem to be a better choice with a much longer reach and more options at much less than these expensive beasts. I recently downgraded from the 80D to the M50 mirrorless and I have whined even one tear with the M50 having advanced firmware-options than the older 80D. Canon must add some more features or continue to lose clientele over to Sony who seems to be leading the edge with the exception of terrible menus and touch screen lacking.

    • @shiznuts
      @shiznuts Před 4 lety

      Well... as they don't make 1" sensors but 'borrow' their compactcamera sensors from Sony, like many other brands do, they obviously don't have Canon's propriety DualPixel AF.
      That said... I wouldn't say people were 'perfectly happy' with the C-AF on the G7 X Mark II, but it was somewhat acceptable.
      What is not acceptable that a generation later the C-AF not only not has improved... it has become worse than it was! And they've taken out 24p as well! Surely though they must've added something? Well, you do get overheating and interrupted recordings now, so... there's that?! Not sure what they're smoking over there at Canon HQ...

    • @JeffSpeers
      @JeffSpeers Před 4 lety +1

      @@shiznuts they actually do make 1 inch sensors with and without Dual Pixel AF. It just so happens that this latest batch of cameras with 1-inch sensors they are sourcing from Sony. Both the XF405 and XF705 have DPAF and they look and work great! I have an older XC10 that has a 1 inch sensor made by Canon. It doesn't have DPAF, it is a little slow to find focus sometimes, but when it does it hardly ever loses it and it doesn't do that wierd focus pulse like others do. We've seen Panasonic improve C-AF performance considerably with firmware updates. We've seen Sony adding a 'tripod mode' that raises the threshold for overheat protection kicking in, but rendering the camera so uncomfortably hot for handheld shooting that you should mount it to a tripod. And we've seen Olympus add 24p to the E-M1 through firmware as well. So I'm hoping they'll listen to what people have to say and be all over these issues, addressing it later on with firmware!

Canon is great in terms of ergonomics, but with this auto focus system it sucks. RX100 M6+M7 does not suite my needs - i need a brighter lens, not neccessarily with 200mm. g5x lens is great, 24-120 has a perfect usability. I tried RX100 VA, but 70mm is simply not enough.
