I just ordered one of these refurbished from Canon. After finally getting a chance to look at it in-hand, comparing with the G7Xiii and the Sony RX100vii, I was convinced to take the plunge. But I have to say that one of the key features, as a long time eyeglass wearer, was the DIOPTER ADJUSTMENT on the top of the pop-up viewfinder! I don’t have to remove my glasses to use it, which I did with the RX100 and others. Just hoping that the zoom range works for me, coming from a LUMIX LX7. Time will tell. Hi Gordon,
I bought a Fuji X-E3 recently (together with XF18mm f2.0, XF27mm f2.8 and XF50mm f2.0) because I really wanted to try the Fuji ecosystem after hearing a lot of good things about it (as a JPEG shooter, film simulations and all the possibilities to tweak the JPEGs looked very appealing to me). I chose the X-E3 for budget and size reasons… as a happy owner of a Sony RX10 mk4, I was looking for something smaller which was performing better in low light/bokeh.
I sold my RX100 mk5 to buy the Fuji. I never enjoyed its ergonomics… In the past I’ve also had some other cameras: Canon G1X Mk1 & Mk2, and a Sony A6500. As you can see, I am some kind of non-interchangeable lens lover, and it is still the case. Fuji X-E3 was my second attempt to the ILC world (after the A6500) and I am not enjoying it too much. But what worries me even more, I am not enjoying the X-E3… Autofocus is not good at all, at least in medium-low light (maybe on a sunny day it is), or I am not being able to make it work.
In summary, I am thinking on selling my Fuji kit and buy a compact zoom camera. As I’ve seen you are/have been a Fuji owner, and also have owned many compact cameras, I would like your advice on which compact camera to buy. There are my priorities:
    - Good/reliable autofocus (I am more a photographer than video shooter, but I do occasionally family videos)
    - Compact size (it doesn’t have to be a very small camera, but for sure not a DSLR-like, as I already have a fantastic RX10 mk4 there)
    - Good low light performance
    - Bright zoom lens (I’ve learnt I don’t like a fix lens when using my Fuji primes)
These are the options I am considering:
    - Canon G1X Mk3 (big sensor, dual pixel, manual controls)
    - Canon G5X (longer focal range, bright lens)
    - Panasonic LX100 Mk2 (big sensor, manual controls, bright lens)
    - Panasonic LX10/15 (bright lens, manual controls)
Which would be your pick between these 4? Any other better option?

Using a Canon powershot G15 since years as backup camera with 5 times f1.8-2.8 zoom and smaller sensor this finally seems to be a good update for me. dont laught - but 4.2 was not really enough. 5 times is just perfect. and i guess with the again very good f/1.8-2.8 Lens its perfect and better then some aps-c cameras with standard lens. i am very curious. only points - the battery live time wont come close to the g15 wich survives hundreds of shots of ... and the hot shoe.. wich i used for a remote control - never used a flash ( not even the integrated one ) .

I've just bought this camera and it has some + and -, as everything. First thing which shocked me is how small it actually is, I didn't expect it beying so small, if I knew that, I would probably buy Panasonic. 🙂
Viewfinder is very small, which I expected, but it's still usefull, but when I look into my Panasonic G80, it's really massive difference. What is good is that I don't have any problems with using that viewfinder with my glasses as someone mentioned in reviews, it's not different from other modern viewfinders, you see it even with glasses, which is not really thing for many old DLSR or analog compact cameras, where I see literally nothing with my glasses on, so that's + for modern cameras.
To be honest, I didn't really tested picture quality yet, body looks good and solid, you can let finder opened if you want, it works same as on other cameras, there is sensor which turns it on (and viewfinder sensor works really great, better than on my previous Panasonic G7), or you can set it to manual which works like that when you open finder, it automaticaly turns LCD off which I really like because most of the time when you just taking pictures, you don't need that big LCD screen if you are using finder, it only eats battery. Finder is always turning off automaticaly after few seconds, which is good, it turns on so fast that you barely notice it was off when you put your eye there.
It's not that bad for such a small camera, but to be honest, I expected much more settings, as I am used to from my Panasonic G80 and G7 before, I don't know if this is just a Canon thing or it's only this small camrea, but I miss many things I am used to from my bigger camera, for example set main LCD as stat display which shows time, iso etc...not live view all the time, which eats battery and makes sensore hot. Yes, this camera is noticably warm after some time of using it, it's not a big deal, I don't mean hot like really hot, but you feel it, it's warm.
Autofocus.....well, I expected it beying little better, it has really problem with catching on one color objects in worse light.
I believe that picture quality will be ok, as I already saw on pictures in many reviews I saw.
But as I said on the start, I would probably pick Panasonic now, because it's bigger and there is (I hope) more settings as I am used to from other Panasonic cameras. I had to turn off touch on this Canon, because camera is so small, that I just can't manipulate with that without accidentaly touch the screen time to time, which is really anoying. When I am taking pictures (no video, no taking from tripod) with my G80, I have closed display most of the time which solves all problems with eating battery and accidental touches. But I understand that make it on such small camera is not that simple.
Brightness of lens is going as I expected, there is 1.8 on widest focal, but when you zoom, it jumps to like 2.5-2.8 very fast, but I expected that, it's still better than basic lenses for DLSR.
One thing I really love on this camera is when you close your fnder, it looks like some random camera with small sensor, you they allow you to concerts and festivals with that, "big" cameras are mostly banned on such events now.
There is one settings which I really like about this camera - you can set how long times can camera set automaticaly, normaly, it tends to use more careful times (shorter), but I know that I have good hands and I can hold longer time, also this camera has pretty good stabilisation, so you definitely can use times like 1/20s on wide or 1/60 on 120mm from your hadn, which means that you can take picture with lower iso. Many cameras are too careful and set too short times in situations where it's not really needed, so I am glad that you can force automatics to use shorter or longer times if you want, ofcourse, you can shot in time priority mode, but I prefer Av mode in like 90% of all situations.
BTW, even when I am not really interested in making videos, it's really sad that camera doesn't have mic jack, it can mean that they really believe in quality of integrated mic/mics or they just want you to buy different camera for some reason.

    • @Pidalin
      @Pidalin Před 2 lety +1

PS: There is one thing which I really hate about this camera - you can't use your standard big camera neck belt because holes in camera are too small for installing it there, I don't understand it, if it is so small, they should add some rings like for keys as standard accessories or something else which could solve that. I want to carry it on neck as I am used to, so I have to solve this problem somehow.
PS2: Camera is much slower than big cameras, when you take a picture, there is like 1 second lag in finder or LCD screen, you can feel that it's saving picture on card or something, it's not a big deal, but I was used to see taken picture after I take it immediately after I press trigger, which doesn't really work here, so I turned this feater off completely.

no Phase Detect AF is a big let down - it is 2019 and as you brought out - most likely the Sony RX100 4 sensor - Sony to release a RX product in next few days - they are already using Phase Detect for some time -
The real issue for me is the focal range on the RX100 VA - only 24-70mm - vs Canon is giving us 24-105/120 which is much more usable focal length and with same aperture of f1.8-2.8 why can't Sony give us that ??
then yes - crazy that Canon has Mic in on the G7X but not the more expensive G5X - crazy these camera makers are just not listening to the users 100% - they seem to love to leave something out -
Panasonic is due to upgrade the LX10 but for sure it will not include Phase Detect AF - I am sure they will just do like Canon - use old Sony sensors - time for Canon and Panasonic to make their own 1 inch sensors - not to be dependent on what old stuff Sony is willing to sell them -
If we see something new from Panasonic it will be the same - Old Sony sensors -
I suspect Sony will make a big jump with a new 1 inch sensor stacked BSI with Phase Detect and EYE and live object tracking like that of the A6400 - leaving Canon and Panasonic well behind -
But I wish Sony would upgrade their RX100 xx with a new 24-120 lens F1.8-2.8 with Touch LCD - design fixed EVF
with the A6400 AF and new battery and different texture on body for a better grip
I guess one can dream :)

  • @shiznuts

Shame it's not a better G7XmkIII. And that it has lost its previous formfactor (with a vari-angle screen, proper EVF and hotshoe) which would've made it perfect (in combination with a 3.5mm mic-in/livestreaming). Not to mention the lack of 24p and DPAF/PDAF or the 10 min restriction in 4K. Then again... it's Canon. They're always playing the segmentation game and crippling cameras forcing you into higher tier cameras when you want/need certain features. Though even then you're never 'getting it all' which is a shame. They're also just about always playing 'catching up', now finally adding 4K (I'm surprised it's cropless) and hardly ever leading the pack with innovation (like here they're re-using an older sensor from the competition).
But... it's difficult to argue that Canon cameras 'just work' and are easy to use. Especially regarding the CZcams community where one really just literally wants to 'point and shoot' and not deal with the technicalities of it all. Over a decade ago the YT community weapon of choice were the small Flip cams by Cisco (UltraHD/MinoHD), after that it pretty much became the G7X-series. Their package is just allround and easy enough to have such a massive following. Most notably for vloggers: the screen flips up so they can monitor themselves, the AF is somewhat decent, the onboard mic with adhesive windfurry attached sounds okay-ish and the stabilization works rather well compared to some of the competition. The lens itself also has a really usable range and more importantly the sensitivity at that range is really respectable with its f/1.8-2.8 (the mentioned G1XmkIII for example only has 3x zoom and falls off from f/2.8 to 5.6, kinda defeating the purpose of the somewhat bigger sensor; or the RX100 VI with its versatile 24-200mm range but f/2.8-4.5 sensitivity). In the end the G7X-series always made for a great portable allround all-in-1 camera. That's been the charm all along, just bring your G7XmkII with you... if you don't end up using it that day, fine... if an oppertunity to capture some footage does come up... you've got it with you. For those moments when you just need something more than what your cameraphone can give you. I mean... sure you can take an 80D with RØDE VideoMic Pro+ and Joby Gorillapod with you wherever you go... but it gets a bit bulky and cumbersome. Same reason a BMPCC4K with rigging, external monitor, storage, power, audio, lighting etc is way overkill for vlogging, even if they fitted a record button as such that it is easy to hit when holding it in selfie mode. Just use the appropriate equipment for the right scenarios.
Regarding resolution, 1080p rather than 4K didn't bother people too much... after all, on CZcams content is king. 1080p only also meant it you'd cut through it like butter with any editor. People generally like the Canon colorscience applied to imagery, so doesn't need much tweaking in post at all, usually looks at the organic softer side than brittle modern oversharpened cellphone footage. You'd pretty much be set introducing a slight hint of sharpness back into the footage, drop a curve on top of the footage and call it a day. This all means a dang quick post process allowing CZcamsrs to upload content whilst it is still fresh.
I'm glad there's an update though. I had great hopes the LX100mkII would've incorporated everything to take the reign, but it was a hardly worthy miserable update. In the same fashion the RX100 VA was just a slight twist on the original V and the VI wasn't much of a successor as it was a variation within the range offering a model with a wider zoomrange (at the cost of sensitivity). The original V stems from the same year as the G7XmkII. In Sony years that actually means it's ancient. Whatever happened to Sony launching an updated model ever half year? And where is the A7SmkIII? Anyways, Sony cams always struggled whether premium compact or APS-C iLC. Wrong focus if you ask me: combining a tiny miniature body and trying to do the craziest specs. That looks nice on paper... in practice... not so great. Overheating, poor ergonomics, lack of ports and usability and such. This is how the seemingly lacklustre G7X-series managed to keep its importance throughout the years! Again... as much as I hate Canon for crippling cameras and lack innovation, they do the basics right and their cameras once again 'just work'.
Been a while since I personally owned a Canon camera though. Last one must've been their PowerShot SX1 IS (one of the first ever cameras to do 1080p). I hacked that one with CHDK to open up some more advanced options like running scripts. From that one I transitioned into interchangeable lens camera systems with the GH2 and later a bunch of other predominantly Panasonic cameras. But I think I've got to give the G7XmkIII a shot here. Would've liked the EVF, even if pop-up (in january I wanted a camera for my South Africa trip and bought a Sony HX99 travelzoom with pop-up EVF, it's better than nothing!) and the added range (5x VS 4.2x zoom; same sensitivity) but the benefits of the G7XmkIII and its lower price might just be the way to go. Again... bummer that we can't have everything, but it's Canon, we really shouldn't have expected anything else from them...

Shiznuts Canon clearly favours the YT vloggers over the photo enthousiasts. Commercially understandable, probably, but still a crying shame for the afficionados. The perfect compact is still not out there. RX100: terrible ergonomics and no manual controls. G5X mark II: not enough manual controls, ludicrous pop-up EVF. G7X mark III: not enough manual controls, no EVF. G1X mark III: slow lens, no 4K video. Lumix LX100 mark II: no tilt screen, so-so resolution. Fuji X100F and Ricoh GR III: no zoomlens, no tilt screen. Sigh...

The Canon G7X Mark II can only bounce the flash at 45 degrees. If the mark III or this G5X mark II can to 90 degree bounce flash that will be the tipping point for me to upgrade. The flicker issue can also arise with dimmed LED lighting which switches at frequencies outside of the country's frequency.
