Buying a pair of Red Wing shoes or Boots second hand might look very tempting. They are cheaper and they already have that cool looking patina that we all love. But to be honest, it is not a good idea for a number of reasons. Let's go over them in detail.

I got a pair of 1155's of eBay recently. They look to be gently used with little wear on the heel. They conditioned up nicely and are a beautiful pair of boots. And I got them about half the price of the new ones. They are 9.5d which is what I wear in all my boots. Although they were a tad bit loose, but I plan on using them with thick winter socks and they now fit just right. you can always make a boot that's a little big work just as you did with thicker insoles. It is the boots in a too small size that I'm cautious of.
I only own second foot red wing (second hand for shoes sounds weird right?) i also just buy them when they are barely used and i had some pretty decent prices, my 877 barely used, not even broken in, €120, a very nice pair of 1188 for €100 and the list goes on. Also bought some very nice Frye roper boots with an incredible patina for... €30 including shipping and they are so great, i keep them on my feet in my house since i got them. As you mentioned, i also use new insoles in my used boots so my feet are not uncomfortable from previous owner footstamp on the inner sole and with time, it will reconform to my feet on my insole. There's a lot of people who sell barely used shoes because they choose the wrong size or because they couldn't take the break-in period. Frankly, they don't know what they miss. I don't think i will ever buy a new pair of RW, there's far too much good opportunity to get fantastic shoes for a bargain. Your Pecos are beautiful btw 👍🏻
I've got a pair of secondhand 3345s (Blacksmiths) which were even resoled by the previous owner to customize before I bought them. Everything you say about the fit is accurate, but if you get a chance at a truthful "worn 5 times" or less, you may actually get the best end of the deal as they won't have personalized so much but may have gotten through the first hours of torture. My word of advice on sizing of heritage (moreso than work models) Red Wings is try on at your dealer if possible, but don't let the sales folks convince you into something that sounds completely crazy - you can trust your feet. They should be snug, not incredibly tight - yes they are bigger, but they are likely to be a half size bigger if the width is spot on or a full size if you need wide and the model doesn't come in EE. CRD's advice about insoles is spot on, they can make any slightly large shoe fit like a charm if you understand how the insole needs to fill the space before you buy it (the insole). And there are tons of insoles that will have different practical effects. As usual, a great video.
I bought mine second hand. They were grey-ish/charcoal but I dyed them black. While they fit my foot without discomfort, I do wish they were a width wider as I like loose boots. They have cork sole and I love it.
Am a timberland fan and bought on purpose a size to big. Can wear double socks in winter time.
But redwing engineer boots if i find them secondhand they are mine.
I would definitely resole those and put some good vibram soles under them beasts.
I can’t lie all my red wings have been second hand. It took me the first 3 pairs to get the rite size. But I was easily able to get double my money back for them. As far as the foot bed it changes over time as you wear them. It’s because of the heat from your foot. It’s like wearing a leather jacket. It’s subject to change. The soles easily replaced. 877 the worst the condition the better. Peccos! Nice! But I’ve been very lucky I have some from the 50’s Irish setters. I would say you can’t go wrong.
Dude i literally have a pair of black pecos exactly like those that i grabbed second hand but very lightly used. They're a perfect winter-sock fit , really the breakin wasn't a big deal at all but they looked super new
I would love a black pair! Where did you find them?
@@CeeAreDee consignment shop in Minturn Colorado. Price would have made you jealous ;)
Thank you. Great content. I also acquire Iron Rangers second hand as long as there is still room for the boot to break in properly for my feet.
You're welcome, thanks for the kind words. Hope you get along well with the Iron Rangers.
I found used lace up redwings water resistant, dont know exactly what model, but I've had them for a year and they are awesome,I only had to get new laces because they were already wore out
Nice. Hope they will last you for a long time
Yes. If;
1. You know your size and the last it's made on.
2. You know the colour way, the leather and how it ages and patinas so you can see how they've been looked after.
3. Like you, the ones you are after are no longer being made.
I'm looking for some Ranchers. Tough as shit, cool as fuck that I can just slide on and reform around my feet. They'd be my fifth pair of RW.
I bought some fairly decent 875 on Facebook for 75$ those bad boys made me loads of money at work. A resole is all they need after a year.
Fantastic option but you MUST do your due diligence. I buy em cheap and get em recrafted & customized from Cobblers like; Role Club, Revive Shoe Repair, Fred's Shoe Repair, and Wyatt & Dads.
If you want a discontinued style I would. But only if only worn a few times. The Cork forms to the previous owners foot.
I have bought all my Red Wings from ebay. It is important to note that you can ALSO buy NEW Red Wings, second hand. I saved about 100 American dollars on a pair of the 4313 Indian Motorcycle 8" Iron Ranger type boots, brand new in box, 1st quality. BTW, these don't look like clown shoes because the cap toe is actually smaller and more forward than the iron ranger so the profile is much slimmer. they are glorious. I also bought a pair of merchants NIB. Also new. I will say that if you're buying an old, worn pair, it is a good idea to be factoring in the cost of a complete resole, which there is a huge market for. A lot of people are going into it for the sole purpose of resoling. I have bid on many with nice character.
Nice. Never seen the 4313 before.
it depends on who buys them, there are those who took care of them and sell them to you at a good price in good condition and there are those who use them for years and want to sell them as new
thank you for that Colin Fa..sorry meant Cee Are Dee...
I wear a size 7, which means most men my size are also lightweight and don't wear out shoes quickly. A lightly used pair of great shoe/boots is 80% of the time just perfect
Never thought about that but you’re right.
@@CeeAreDee forgot to add its also a rarer size, so it isn't like they're growing on trees for me to pluck. Sometimes I'll get a good deal.
"These horrible yeezy things"
thank you.
Welcome ;)
So how did the boots work out?
If your comfortable in redwings the first day then they are to big. A correct fit hurts like hell for a month until they break in. Maybe longer. But once you get through it they are like custom made boots that last forever
..... Could not agree more... Funny not much mention of this simple observation on all the " What size iron rangers should I get" forums but it should be in my opinion....
I went into a Red Wing store and got measured, they told me 9.5, I thought that was too small so I got 10s. Years later I bought a second pair that were factory seconds (limited selection) they only had 9.5s...turns out the 9.5s fit better once broken in.
So... you should have listened to the trained salesman that was helping you but, you thought you knew better. I bet this story doesn't surprise your wife 🤣🤣🤣
@@didamnesia3575 oddly after a day of chasing cows and blisters on my small toes turns out 10 IS the right size. Sometimes when you know you know.
@@pursueadventure sounds like neither I'd a perfect size. I agree with your point that if you're working hard and your feet swell more because of that, a larger shoe/boot is probably the way to go.
Hi, im about to buy a pair of 1155, they would be my first red wing pecos. Whats the difference on sizes beetwen this and your running shoes? Maybe same as my iron ranger size?
I’m a 10 in running shoes and a 9 in red wings. I find that Pecos rub a little narrow over the 877s I’ve got.
I wear a size up from Brannock. Also, by the time you buy the second hand and get it resoled you could buy a new pair.
Yeah. Could be close to the new price depending if you got a bargain on the second hand pair.
Hi, what is your brannock? And what size are these redwings? Thank you.
9.5 D on the right. 9 D on the left. But to be honest, with pecos I’m more comfortable with an E width.
About to buy a pair of iron rangers for $80 in super great shape.
Nice find!
Red wing pecos are the best work boots
I’d imagine they are pretty damn good.
As long as they’re not too used. Or, you could just buy them brand new. They’re worth it. Also, why am i the only one that thinks the break in isnt long or painful? Im not trying to be a tough guy or anything, ive just never had any pain while breaking in red wings. My feet are different than yours though.
Same here, mine were comfortable out of the store and just got better with time. The feeling now is akin to wearing a sneaker.
I bought 2nd hand 8130 for $80, still good as new. No leather creases, I think the owner gave up of breaking it in. This is my 2nd day of wearing it and I understand why he sold it, hahaha... The only evidence it's 2nd hand is the minimal heel drag on it's Christy soles
Haha. Keep going. Will be worth it!
@@CeeAreDee I will, hahaha... My motivation is this, "you want it, embrace the pain," 😂😂😂
1178 is made to order through redwing I did that a few years ago
I saw that and was tempted enough to ask if a mate would ship them over. In the end, I am happy with these. They do the job and an old pair of boots get a new home.
I own like 13 pairs of Red Wings and at some point started buying used boots in good condition and had no issues whatsoever with them. They do need some braking in time also, cause the insole will at some point shape to your foot again as well, without having the painful braking in period for the upper leather though. Some of my Iron Rangers I also bought half a size bigger than I usually wear to be able to put a thin insole into them, wich in case of the Iron Rangers, also helped in colder conditions as well as comfort. So I actually don‘t quite agree with you not to buy second hand Red Wing boots. You are right with buying the first pair not knowing your correct size, but on the other hand if you get a great deal you can experiment with different sizes as well. As long as you don‘t buy them too small you can always put in an insole and/or wear thicker socks in them and they still would be looking okay. Of course it all depends on how good the condition of the boots is, but also if you really want a great pair of totally fu**ed up boots, you could also be happy with those. Just an opinion. Love your new intro by the way 🤜🤛
Lmao the way he says "Don't "
Can’t hide the Scottish. Even after 12 years in Germany
@@CeeAreDee lmao for hour next video can you sing the song that does "Dont stop, Believing "
I’ll do that when I reach 100000 subs. Deal?
Did you go same size as other boots or did you size down
For these specific ones I went for 43 as I wanted to add the insoles. Normally for red wings I size down.
@@CeeAreDee my man
I watched this video after I bought some red wing 4470’s second hand. But in my defense they look like they have hardly been worn.
I’m a cobbler so I always buy used boots. Way cheaper than brand new. I washed them up, condition them, and gave them a new soles. Voila, I got myself a brand new boots for a faction of the price.
That’s a great skill to bring to the table.
Can the cork bed be replaced as well as the sole?
You can get warts from wearing used shoes
well, no. period :D
I never buy used shoes. Someone else's foot has already broken those shoes in, and your feet will never find comfort in shoes molded around someone else's foot. But to me, it's just gross that someone else's foot was sweating, and all of that sweat is now soaked into the leather. It's like buying used underwear, that has never been washed.
Wanna em worn in then work in em
I’m a desk jockey. Not much manual labour to get them proper worn in.
Smart looking boots. Pronounced paycos. Say the o as o. Good job by the cobbler. Had a pair ruined by a bad cobbler. If hipsters and rich spoiled brats don't like the way a real work boot looks they should stick with their tennies. If you don't even know what work is you don't really rate a work boot. Probly a sign of decadence and decline. Decadence and decline is the main theme in fashion today. Maybe I'll try fancy dress shoes in the garden. Some of us still care and wish to be decent people.
I don’t think cobblers know what to do with good boots these days.
Bla,,,,bla,,,,,bla,,bla,,,
😘
Now I understand that as denimheads we enjoy more than a bit of Americana but I just don't get this sheep following if Red Wing... They're just thick crust leather with comfortable soles. Don't get me wrong, I of course get the heritage and like the style, quality is good but it's nothing special, and especially not for the price!!! In Europe we have dozens of family owned shoe and boot makers that still hand craft their shoes and boots. And they do so at a price point not very much higher or lower than that of Red Wing. Quality though is of a whole different league with calf leather, fully lined and single or double Norwegian welt. Like Timberland, thing Panama Jack, like Whites or the top stuff, think Heschung. Etc. I am shocked that denim heads should be do brainwashed into a bunch of brand fan boys....
Can you name a couple brands, where durability and quality is as good as RW boots, from Europe? I can’t think of any.
@@Simonfnp Weston, Heschung, Paraboot are just a few local to my country. Problem is they don't market as well, are much smaller 100% hand made, oh and people just want to be fan boys lol... Plenty more from nordic countries, Austria etc.
@@chawenhalo0089 ok, Thanks for answering, I will look em up, I didn’t know a single one of em.
