An Uncommon Remembrance of Chuck Yeager

- I did this video through the lens of his friendship with Jackie because it's something a lot of people don't know, and also that's how I can show you pictures of him topless sighting her runs or in the pool at her house. There are plenty of books telling the same stories about his flights if you'd rather read that, including my own Breaking the Chains of Gravity. I didn't want to retell the same stories you all already know. I wanted to do something different: his own remembrance of a close friend.
If you want a standard pilot story about his Mach 1 flight, here: • Ego vs. Ego: The Race ...
And another one about the X-1A flight: • Yeager's Wild Ride in ...

In Yeager's autobiography, he describes taking a trip to the Soviet Union with Jackie, for some international aviation event, and on the way back "accidentally" flying over some Soviet air bases to take some pictures.
Badasses to the max, both of them!
He went incognito. , but it wasnt long before their Russian hosts figured out who he was
yep, when they found out who Chuck was they clumsily interviewed him and tried to pump him for info but all they manage to do was reveal that they were technically behind us.
I remember the story in his autobiography about meeting a Soviet pilot at an embassy party. They had a captured MiG that Chuck had made test flights in. He complained to the Soviet pilot that the plane had been nearly impossible to control in a dive. The Soviet said, What!? You dove it? You were supposed to eject if it went into a power dive. We don’t ever dive it.
My God keep you in heaven. We’ve lost a true great hero.
xD. I miss Chuck Yeager. He was a badass.
I believe it was a "spin" that they were discussing
Chuck said later "I didn't tell them that we had solved that problem years ago. I just nodded my head and looked mournful like he did. But afterward I kept checking my mental pockets to make sure they hadn't been picked!:
My favorite quote of his is "The first time I saw a jet I shot it down"
yes, yes he did
General Yeager figured out how to leave this realm behind at Warp Speed without leaving so much as a sonic Boom..God Speed General Yeager
I kind of wish that instead of flying John Glenn again in 1997, they had flown Yeager. He deserved a space flight.
Chuck was too old and had too much attitude for the space program.
Agreed
@@BobY52944 is this a statement from a relative?? :-o Curious!
@@DavidLindes Nope. I don't think so.
I concur. Yeager was great and always remained so, Glenn became a criminal that should have been thrown in prison!
Quick correction: The G-suit does not inflate at certain altitudes. It only inflates under high G-loads such as in tight turns or hard pitch "pulls".
She's conflated a G-suit with a Partial Pressure suit.
@@craigwall9536 She also conflated jet fuel (more or less kerosene) with gasoline.
RIP Chuck, there was a story that when Sam Shepard was going to play him in "the Right stuff", Chuck discovered Sam had a fear of flying so took him up in a plane to help him get over it. apparently it had the opposite effect, because Chuck didn't know how to do gentle.
He probably just had a different definition of "gentle". Lol
This was a tribute to Jackie with a sprinkle of Chuck.
The title of the video is "An Uncommon Remembrance of Chuck Yeager" That might lead you to believe that it's not just a video about him and maybe there's going to be something uncommon about it. It's literally in the title. Re-watch the video from 0:15 to 0:35. She tells you exactly what she is going to do.
Wonderful tribute to the both of them.
This definitely could have been named better. "And this guy in the background of this woman I want to talk about it Chuck Yeager" lol
@@nathanduffy6565 at the end of the video, she also says I hope you enjoyed this tribute to Chuck Yeager. This video was 90% Jackie and 10% Chuck. Definitely not a tribute to Chuck.
@lee plays bass i never said the video was bad. I commented on her last statement saying, "I hope you enjoyed this tribute to Chuck". As I said its a tribute to Jackie with Chuck sprinkled in.
My son and I looked crossed......... VS needed to use Chuck to make this video stand out. So Sad!
I was lucky to meet him as a teenager back in 1987. I had been reading and rereading his autobiography, "Yeager", for about two years beforehand. We had just returned to Montgomery, AL, after two years in Seoul, Korea, where my father was an Army officer at the U.S. garrison at Yongsan. I had also been a student pilot for two years at that point, and had gotten my first solo at the USAF MWR aero club at Osan AB.
I was at Maxwell AFB that morning; the annual Gathering of Eagles was just starting up, and a couple of P-51s made up in "Glamorous Glennis" and "Old Crow" paint schemes were on the ramp, where GEN Yeager and GEN Anderson were due to come out and fly later. Taking a break from ground school, I wandered out to the ramp with Mom in tow to go ogle the Mustangs. We were about halfway to the airplanes when Mom said, "hey son...look behind you."
And there he was, surrounded by the usual coterie of USAF officers and GEN Anderson, all just generally shooting the breeze. Mom approached him and asked if he would be willing to sign an autograph. As you might expect, I was pretty much dumbstruck...I think I mumbled something like "Gosh sir, it's really great to see you!" He just smiled and shook my hand, then he and Bud went out and flew the Mustangs for a photo run over Maxwell.
Sadly, with the passage of the years, my parents' divorce, and my own somewhat nomadic lifestyle, the piece of paper with the autograph has disappeared. But I'll certainly never forget that day.
When I was 12, my dad and I were at an EAA event listening to a presentation when an elderly gentleman walked in from the back and stood next to me. I had pretty much read everything in my middle school library about Chuck Yeager and failed to realize he was standing right next to me. My dad knew from the instant who it was and my dad said hello to him after the presentation. I shook his hand but was in such shock I was speechless. I literally could not form words.
Another top notch video. Being a space nerd myself, I really enjoy this channel.
When it comes to people like Brigadier General Yeager, a quote from General George Patton comes to mind.
"We should not mourn the passing of such men but rather thank God that such men have lived."
To talk about Yeager is to drain the dictionary of superlatives. A man's man and a true legend.
As for Jackie Cochran, she was a top-notch pilot. Period. A role model for many young women who came behind her. Like Yeager and other pioneers, she is a genuine legend and trailblazer.
We were all privileged to have shared the earth with General Yeager.
Almost Heaven, West Virginia
Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains, growing like a breeze
[Chorus]
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
[Verse 2]
All my memories gather 'round her
Miner's lady, stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky
Misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye
[Chorus]
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
[Bridge]
I hear her voice in the morning hour, she calls me
The radio reminds me of my home far away
Driving down the road, I get a feeling
That I should have been home yesterday, yesterday
[Chorus]
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
[Outro]
Take me home, (Down) country roads
Take me home, (Down) country roads( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
@Penultimate H Give his autobiography a read - he earned the right to be as crass as he wished.
I can only try to imagine what a privilege it would have been to share the air with him!
@Penultimate H I lost all respect for him when he dismissed the Voyager Non-Stop Around the World Flight as "old technology meets Marathon Dancing". What a shit head.
@@johndemeritt3460 Are you even a pilot?
I did get to meet General Yeager, my dad was stationed at Edward's in the early years, and in the 70's the Air Force was still a tight knit community. The world has lost a true hero with the passing of General Yeager
Well, at least Amy used the name Chuck Yeager a few times during her Cochran tribute. RIP Chuck Yeager.
oh I hadn't noticed that
I met him (and his wife, Glynnis) once, at Beale AFB. Can't describe the circumstances, but everything they said about his 'cool' was true.
RIP.
This video should have been titled An Uncommon Remembrance of Jackie Cochrane.
It's alright for folks to share what they know of someone when they die. These are stories I wouldn't have heard anywhere else.
@@prdoyle ESPECIALLY NOT ON A VIDEO WITH THIS TITLE
@@xaxfixho and Myron: what's your grief? The misogyny is real, I guess... oof. (Not that I didn't know that, but yikes, y'all.)
This is exactly what the title made it out to be. An uncommon(ly heard) perspective on remembering Chuck. And a brilliantly done one, at that.
It's kinda nice to have a video that doesn't hyper-focus on the person.
You miss a LOT of what they did.
I've watched and read a ton on Yeager and I've never heard he was a "teacher" to a female pilot.
A person's life is intimately intertwined with others. We almost never get to see those connections outside of a brief mention. And learning how much of an impact someone has on another person like this, is basically unheard of.
Jackie was awesome - You should do a video on Chuck Yeager.
😁😁
It is one. Did you not learn new things about Chuck in this? I did!
Great video as always Amy!
After reading General Yeager's books, you can't help but marvel at what a fantastic ride this man's life was! He had a high opinion of himself, and didn't suffer fools gladly. You had to earn his trust, and if you failed to meet his expectations you were done. Violent death was a constant feature in his life, far beyond what most people ever have to endure, yet he carried on. I never met Chuck, but I did attend several evening programs at Airventure Oshkosh were he spoke about his experiences. He was not a politician, he was blunt and opinionated, he was one of a kind.
In 1984 I had just finished Navy boot camp and was training at NAS North Island. There was an air show at NAS Miramar that I attended. I was on a platform looking into the cockpit of the F-20 Tigershark. As I came down the stairs I bumped into a man almost knocking him down. I caught him, it was Chuck Yeager. I stammered "Sorry General Yeager." He said "No problem." We talked for a few minutes and he asked where I was from and I said "Butler Pennsylvania about 30 miles North of Pittsburgh." "Hell I know where Butler is, I'm from West Virginia." About that time another man came up and General Yeager introduced me to Bob Hoover. Here I was an 18 year old E-1 in the Navy talking to two Air Force legends. It didn't get better than that.
RIP Chuck. Thank you Amy, and happy holidays. Waiting for amazing videos in 2021.
Thank you for posting this!
Very glad to see you're still posting.
Great video! Thanks for making such great content.
Love ya Amy, thanks for bringing some joy during these difficult times.
So loving this channel and another extremely informative video.
What a fantastic video! You never disappoint....
A wonderful story. Thank You for all you do. Best wishes for the new year!
I was a tiny tot playing Chuck Yeager's Combat Flight Trainer.
That got me hooked on flight sims for the next 40 years of my life.
I always look forward to your excellent videos. Thank you for posting.
Wonderful tribute to two of the greatest pilots ever. Thank You, Amy!
I loved this video. You're great at storytelling. I purchased your audiobook and I can't wait to hear it soon. Love your channel too, obviously. 😀
Incredibly well written tribute. Fantastic job, Amy.
Another awesome video Amy, I look forward to each and every one of them. Merry Christmas Amy and to all.
What a great episode! Thank you so much for not letting us forget Jackie and Chuck.
Thanks Amy. I love your stuff and as a person who watched the moon landings live I feel exactly like you do. Merry Christmas and let's hope 2021 is an improvement of 2020.
Merry Christmas and thank you for the uploads. Currently binge watching while studying.
I love your channel, the articulation is outstanding.
Cool info, but this wasn't about General Yeager life. You treated him as a side note. I know you didn't intend that, but it's what comes through.
As always, excellently executed. I can't believe you so this without any help. You are amazing.
She does have help, Pete the cat is her assistant producer.
It's kinda nice to have a video that doesn't hyper-focus on the person.
You miss a LOT of what they did.
I've watched and read a ton on Yeager and I've never heard he was a "teacher" to a female pilot.

Dude the title is an “Uncommon” remembrance of Chuck. She said right in the beginning it was about her book of golden age female pilots and Jackie’s relationship with Chuck. The remembrance of Chuck is the role he played in her life and career. Him being a side note is why it’s “uncommon”.
RIP Chuck, you were such a great hero and person. I loved to read "Yeager: An Autobiography". It is one of my favorite book.
Your narration of her first supersonic flight was EPIC! Choked me up as it placed me on her shoulder, witnessing her experience.
Well done👍 That video was definitely a great stocking stuffer🙂 Happy Holidays!
... also I think those bangs look great🙂
A touching tribute to Chuck AND his dear friend, having no need to repeat his famous accomplishments while showing how he was there for a pioneering woman, and obviously, she for him. Beautifully done, Amy!
I learned a lot more about Jackie in this video. I didn't know about her friendship with Chuck! Thank you for doing this.
Love your channel Amy. I remember chucks accomplishments as they happened. The entire X-15 program was incredible. Nice job.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing!
An uncommon remembrance indeed... and a wonderful one! Thank you for sharing this perspective, Amy! Most of us hear way too little about Jackie, and I really dig how you did this video... because it really sort of is about Chuck in a way that... we don't commonly hear about.
Thank you! Good work!
Thanks so much, Amy. My late father was in the air force in the early 60s and idolized Chuck Yeager. I always enjoy learning more about him whenever I can.
Thanks for sharing the story of their friendship, and all of those photos. They both looked so happy in each others company!
As a retired airframe and powerplant technician I can testify that Jet fuel, Avgas, and sweat are far better than perfume.
Worked in the car industry for 40 years. The smell of gas and racing fuel always instills fond memories. But perfume is nice in the right setting. LoL
Thanks Amy, I enjoyed this stories drifting towards History.
Nice video! I got to meet Chuck in Afghanistan back in 2012. He was old and frail but sharp as a tack. I got to have a picture next to him which was thrilling for me. I remember reading one of his books when I was in high school and was always amazed by his accomplishments
So glad you did this. General Yeager was the man. Enjoyed the photos you dug up.
I wasn't expecting this video, I thought you were taking a well earned break. As always, I learned something new. Keep it up!
Thank you for telling this story, I found it fascinating and is truly interesting! Thank you for doing this, I really appreciate it!
Amie your videos are always informative and I think far better than taking a course on the subject.
Great video amy!!
You are a marvelous story teller. Inspirational subjects and your enthusiasm really shows 🙂
I hadn't heard that he passed away. I had the chance to meet him once about fifteen years ago. He was a cranky ol' cuss... But, what was that line from "The Right Stuff?" The ambulance driver looking toward the burning wreckage and smoke....."There! There! is that a man?" Jack Ridley,.. "It sure as hell is!"
Well that's my coffee gone cold.
Riveting. -and I mean with perfectly installed aircraft rivets.
I love a new video from you, Amy.
Thank you so much, and all the best to you and yours this season!
Amy, those bangs you have look so cute. Thanks for sharing this informative video with us that watch your channel. Outstanding job young lady. Well done. Merry Christmas.
Thank you for talking about Jackie as well as Chuck. So few recognize her accomplishments. RIP to both of them.
What a wonderful uncommon tribute from Jackie about Chuck. I think both would be very pleased with your tribute. I have great memories of General Yeager at Oshkosh both flying P 51’s and speaking.
Lendary person ! Thank you for keeping the heritage of such wonderful people alive 💚
This is an absolutely incredible story. Thank you so much for sharing it. A person can't know everything, but I'm very sorry to say I didn't know about this amazing woman until this video. Time to remedy that deficit.
Superb perspective on two legends...thanks for shining the light on Jackie.
Rest in peace, Chuck. You’ll always be remembered!
Thank you very much. Lovely informative story
As always a great video
That was great!
Thank you.
Great storytelling, Amy! And a fitting tribute to General Yeager. Nice job...really enjoyed it. ✌️❤️✈️
What a cool remembrance. Thank you Amy!
I learned a lot with this segment!!!
It was fun hearing you relate the “Fighting for Space” stories.
Incredible. Really amazing people. Both of them. Thanks Amy
Thank you for the information, very cool.
Great video!
Terrific Story telling.
That was the most cinematic description of piloting I've ever heard! It was so well-written, it could've passed as an excerpt from one of your books...
Your such a great story teller. Thank you!
It was a life well lived, we should all be so lucky.
Merry X-mas Amy!
Everything you produce is super interesting... Books or V-Logs... Hyper Impressive
I remember reading a bit about Jackie in Chick’s autobiography. Thanks for this look at his life and now I want to know more about Jackie. What an amazing woman!
True American hero and icon. He was my hero that I looked up to from a very young age. May he rest in peace and fly high. Much love and respect Sir.
You had me at hello, lol. This is the first time I'm watching one of your videos and let me just say you are a badass and I love ya!!!! If we knew each other personally, you would definitely be on best friend status. Phenomenal work I'm so impressed. Science Rocks!!!!!!!
Well done!
Chuck has been a hero of mine ever since I was a kid and read about his exploits both in war and the emerging space program. What a life!
Wow thank you I've learned so much I never knew!!
A friend and family member of mine who is also a pioneering female pilot told me a story, she always chuckled about, of Chuck doing a ground loop not too many years ago at an airport in extreme North Georgia. She summed it up by saying, "I've gone in and out of there a lot of times, but I've never done a ground loop in my life!" I suppose Chuck Yeager was and still is the mark so many pilots judge themselves against; however, for the present, I'd say few even came close!
Great video.
Great tribute to Jackie and Chuck, such amazing and wonderful "fly-boys/girls".
Happy new year!
New subscriber enjoying the content!!
Hey, I thought you were taking a break for the holidays!?! Not complaining, as I always enjoy a video from you, just surprised! Thanks for the Christmas gift :) Merry Christmas!
I never met General Yeager, but when I was about 16 I did get to speak with his wife, Glennis. It was a very pleasant conversation. Imagine my surprise when about a month later I received an autographed photo of him in front of an F-20! I don't even remember giving her my mailing information.
Merry Christmas, Amy! :)
Love your videos ,good job kiddo......
Best wishes thanks for sharing 👍
Love this thank you
Thank you for your perspective 🙏
I just purchased "Fighting for Space." I'm looking forward to reading your work further.
