- People often talk about hitting the ball with your right side, but what does it actually mean and what benefits come from doing this? Dan covers a lot of great technical information in this video that can hopefully help you to improve your swing.

Love the video. Would love to see a separate video on the Right Side when using the Driver. Thanks.
Dan... one of your best instruction pieces... I review it over and over, especially when my swing is off. Thanks
Great video. For years I struggled with coaches telling me to "release the club" and create "extension" and when I would continue to hit blocks and snap hooks they would say that I was flipping the club instead of being "connected". We would play this game of back and forth where the definition of this elusive "release vs flip" led me to believe that both were exactly the same thing and results were dependent purely on your timing and how many balls you hit. Since I abandoned the concepts a long time ago and haven't looked back since. Passive wrist angles with soft arms as demonstrated in this video combined with working the right side through the shot is way easier!
Another great video, Dan. I'm currently working on rebuilding my game entirely on the principles of the modern rotational swing. Always learn something or reinforce an idea watching your lessons. Thanks for sharing your wisdom with the CZcams community.
Such good content from this channel. One of the best on CZcams!
Fantastic Dan - this "hit with the right side" feel for me takes at least 5 individual swing thoughts for the downswing and combines into one. Game changing compression and consistency since adopting this ONE swing thought. THANK YOU!!!
This is gold ..GREAT lesson Dan. So many faults fixed with this tip.
Great video. This is exactly what I am working on now. I’ve always struggled with stalling, sliding, and swinging with the arms. After 40 years of playing this game, I’m finally learning how to hit a golf ball. Thanks for the excellent instruction.
Dan I have watched this video countless times... you are a master of instructional analysis! Great, great lesson!
I have had an injury and have not been getting through the ball, what you talk about is so very obvious and should as I see it get me back to my swing, thanks Dan another great video lesson
Great insight into how to use the body via the right side during both the down and through swing. You have helped me tremendously so far getting my backswing sync’ed up and much more on plane. Now I need to get my downswing and impact more using rotation instead of mostly my hands and arms. This video really helps- Thanks Dan
This tip came in good timing for me. Since Im working on my swing and to stop the flipping through impact!
Another great video Dan. It always made sense to me to use the right side because I'm right handed and all my power comes from there.
Good stuff Dan and well explained. This video is worth watching several times over and the drill done daily to promote muscle memory. Thank you.
Your a brilliant coach Dan. All your vids are quality mate. 👍
Great instruction, my head goes back through impact resulting in inconsistent strikes. This will be a big help.
Very good vid, just what I’ve been working on. Thanks for your help, cheers, Mike
Awesome Dan!! one thing I was missing was the pressure into my right palm. Thank you so much for the insight!!
Probably your very best video. Thank you!
Brilliant Dan, one of your best. A great help!
Great video. Tried it out on the practice field with almost instant success. Power and accurac simply explained. Many thanks!
Excellent - just what I have been trying to accomplish. Good breakdown. Might be helpful to make a few comments on the role of the left hand and arm through all this as well.
great video, I like that you explain the swing on a more overall level i.e. right side vs left side - Thanks
Great way of breaking down the right side in the down swing looking forward to working on that today.
Great concise information and feels to get the body turning through the ball with the right side getting down to the ball with the iron handle in front of the ball is great instruction.
This is going to help me so much with ball flight and consistency. I actual struggle with way to high ball flight and have some vids of my swing on my phone and can easily see the right shoulder hang back and the right wrist extend through and before the hit
This is great, I come off the course with a sore right shoulder, probably because it’s hanging back like you say.
Will try this out Friday.
Thank you.
Great video Dan just got to remember this now on the course.
This is fantastic advice and well explained! Thank you from Tennessee
EXCELLENT!! I like the concept of hitting with the right side. I find it much easier to control how I impact the ball, much more stable. thanks!
Good tip. I find that when my right lat/shoulder goes through, I can maintain the bent right elbow to impact otherwise it's a lash at the ball.
Thanks Dan, Just what I needed ... Will definitely work on it ..
Excellent makes total sense. Can you do a video for driver demonstrating the same concept?
This is something I really need to work on. Even if I take the club back perfectly, my body tends to "stall" as I get near impact and my arms take over and I flip the clubface closed and pull or hook the ball wildly to the left. I need to work on keeping my body rotating so I can better square the clubface up. Nice job, Dan.
I need to put it on my "to do" list to watch this video every month, all too often I fall into the trap of the sling shot swing and hope everything lines up at the ball which it frequently doesn't. Nothing beats the feeling of compressing the heck out of the ball with the right side !😊
Exactly what I needed to see today! Thanks so much!
I’m 70 years old and have lost distance on all irons until today. Hitting from the right has worked for me. Amazing and thanks,,,,
Thank you Dan for a very interesting and useful lesson!
This is probably the best golf instruction video I’ve seen!
Great video Dan exactly the sort of stuff I'm looking for. I'm trying hard to work this into my swing but as many other contributors have commented about their own attempts, I'm finding it difficult to stop my body 'early extending' which causes me to add loft, lose distance and be inconsistent. Shot 73 the other week and then 85 a week later. Subscribed to your modern rotational golf swing course and been working with the content over winter which has been helpful.
This is exactly what I feel is the error in my swing Dan. I’ve suffered with early extension, high handle, right heal coming up high on down swing for years and although I ‘feel’ like I’ve tried to make changes, the truth is I’ve never achieved it. This concept looks great and is something I will try tomorrow. Speak soon about booking a lesson. Jason, Essex
I appreciate your videos Dan. Thanks.
was taught this when i started 3 years ago, great video!
These vids of yours speak directly to my issues. Subscribed. 👍
clue to my last puzzle. dan's hogan explanation is outstanding!
Pretty much what I'm working on right now. I feel like I need to have my trailing shoulder pointed toward the ball around the moment of impact while brushing the ground with the tip of my trailing thumb.
Excellent video In golf nobody gets it right all the time isn’t that the beauty of golf? Practice practice practice never makes perfect but it sure helps. The thing about coaching videos is in the understanding of what happens in the swing and how it’s described, too many show what not to do and basically we all know that ,that’s why we’re watching the videos in the first place.
Superb level of detail, top guy too!
Looking forward to trying this move tomorrow, thanks m8
As a left hander who learned to play golf right handed I've always had a dominant left side. This video was really helpful for getting my head around the 'feels' I need to more consistently engage my right side. It's already helping with my ball-flight and strike consistency. Great video Dan, thanks.
Great stuff Matt
Same here. It’s changed everything for me. Finally a + handicap!!! Amazing video
This is what Jamie storey is trying to teach me, great seeing it done by his mentor, thanks Dan.
Thx Dan, this has helped me immensely. I would like to see how you execute the Driver with a right side technique.
Great swing thought for me is feeling that the right shoulder gets ahead of the club head at impact, really gets your body rotating through the ball.
I love this video! It helped a lot. Can you also make the same style but with driver?
Great Vid Dan, pure Gold! Whenever I have have the swing thought of bringing the back of my right shoulder through the hitting area I get such sweet contact. Do you thing this was what Mr. Hogan was alluding to when he spoke about wishing he had 3 right arms through impact? PS Can you do something about the weather in Manchester Dan, every time I get my clubs out it either P....s down or it blows like a hoolie!!!!!!
Great vid this and something im struggling with at the minute. Got the exact issue you describe, club path numbers vary from like 3deg out to in to 3 deg in to out, so very inconsistent shot shape/path.
Great tip! I watched it on the throne last night and played today, bit of a shaky start then I started to flush it and eagled the par 5 and generally played really well with it. Obviously I have to work it through the short game too but very pleased so far. Many thanks.
r533bbd ,TMI ! Started to flush it ! 😂
GREAT TIP! Thanks!
This is great instruction. I have trouble getting the timing of the feet, hips, and shoulders. The single right arm drill will help.
This is the key to good ball striking. You also want to drive your right knee towards the target to kind of get things going, then everything stays connected. Start by hitting chip shots this way. The right hand provides the power
Very good info and explanation........cheers!!!
Holy smokes! This vid is so huge. I came to this looking for a better understanding of right side bend and it's influence on plane, but I'm going to just do the drills and get to range and see what happens.
3 hours later: Wow, thank you Mr. Whittaker! So, THAT's how I'm supposed to swing a golf club. Overall result after 140 balls was very good. Considering this was my first attempt at Dan Whittaker's right sided swing, I'd say excellent. Whittaker says it's more consistent and I'm a believer. My better ones were longer than my normal long with really nice ball height and shape and I was pleased to have so many. My misses were pushes and push fades, but when I finished better, they straightened out. My next ball striking opportunity will be actual play in 4 days. I like the drill and I'm going to do some shadow swings in the meantime.
Great stuff! Please do a video of how (not when) to start the right hand rotation at the end of the back swing for right handed golfers :)
He explains so well I actually understand
Awesome Dan watch Rod Pampling his a right sided player on the US tour pro from Australia 🇦🇺 unbelievable power and ball striker.. ride sided golf is a winner cheers mate
Great video Dan, could you do a similar video for the Driver, to confirm positions etc?
great stuff mate, cheers
Most complete instruction. Should help everything to work together
Really informative mate
Your a life saver!
hi dan .. great content ... can you please do a video on a tendency to have a high handle delivery of the club , leading to toe strikes on the club face .. any drills to help with that would be really appreciated .. been struggling with it for a while ...
Dan great vid.. this be same with driver ? Obviously different ball position.. 👍
Can’t watch this video enough! 🙏
Absolutely brilliant 👌
Dan... Masterclass!
Dan Whittaker in stray piece of hair shocker...fully wild barnet - great content but was throwing me right off haha
Hello Dan, this is close to what I have been looking for . I always have had a problem with not taking a divot and frequently hooked many shots as I approaching the ball under plane. Recently I was “diagnosed” to be a natural “overgolfer” meaning that I should approach the ball with the right palm facing down at the ball to compress the ball and also avoiding overdraws. The grip also needed a change with the right hand more on top of the shaft and my elbow bend pointing diagonally right and forwards in the setup. Hope to see something on your channel about this concept as I see to many instructions on CZcams with a “standard” approach to take-away/backswing with the right elbow pointing in towards the chest, folding early etc. etc. I hope this make sense. Best Regards from Olle
I’m finding that a good swing thought is to really complete my follow by continuing with my right side rotation. As long as I feel my bellybutton rotate away at the start of the backswing I can be fairly sure I get loaded into a good position to start the right side movement. I was dragging my left arm before, but now it’s just there for stability.
Being a former baseball player this has always been a struggle for me. The baseball swing focuses on keeping the weight neutral or more towards back foot (not to mention the back foot pivots in a baseball swing). Still a work in progress for me but your theory makes perfect sense as demonstrated by 99% of PGA tour players. Keep up the good work Dan and I’ll keep practicing.
*pivots EARLY
This is a video. How do you keep moving forward/turning?
Excellent video
This is great. How do you get from the top of your backswing to that position where the club is very much coming from behind you?
Great vid.
Helluva lesson here. It's all there!
Hi Dan, if you are hitting with the right side, how do you initiate the transition? Is it different? How do you effectively clear your left side ? Are you more open at impact? Thanks for another sensational video.
Good show.
Dan, Any other drills for this? Think it’s a great concept to practice.
great tip as usual dan but what about driving the left shoulder up which is easier than driving the right shoulder down
Hi. If you have time, can you clarify the right palm facing down. It doesn't look like the right palm is facing down but rather forward. What am I missing? Thanks,
Good point
This is the best golf video ever. It’s my missing piece so I may be a bit biased .... great stuff.
Hi Dan, does this apply to wedges as well, say from 100 yards and in. Using the right side. Cheers
Splendid work! Not only your best video, but perhaps the best on the net! Many thanks.
Dan, my problem is with a conventional distance from the ball my right elbow hits my torso and the face closes (I need to trim some weight I know). I get some big hooks and pull hooks from there. Should I consider moving my hands further from my body? I've already pulled my hips back as far as I can and that does create some space. But it also puts me into a more bent over position, which doesn't feel too good on the back. Your suggestions?
Thank you
Thanks Dan very good instruction for right side movement. You didn’t include the hip. Is it the same for the right hip also? Best regards, Richard.
The right side dominant swing could be dated back to Ben Hogan and Gary Player, followed by Tom Watson, Nick Faldo, Greg Norman, extended by Trevor Immelmen, Ernie Els, Stewart Cink, Adam Scott, Padrag Harrington.
Now we could almost every active player of PGA/LPGA play in this way with just a few exceptions.
However, most of the internet on line coachs play in left dominant way. This phenomenon may be originated from the two milestone charaters, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, both play in left dominant way.
The question is most of them sometimes tried to analyse the swing of Rory McIlroy or Dustin Johnson, but unaware of the differences of swing philosophy between them.
Fantastic
A Question Dan ? Doing the motions you describe I feel my left arm moving inwards as my left arm moves in front of me, that is as I move my entire right side. In other words the left arm is not moving out and away.
Super video per the initial right shoulder move at the start of the downswing while moving the right knee and hip as well. So would you say the right shoulder gets going at the start of the downswing that is you consciously get the right shoulder going right away. Is this correct
