- The right elbow plays a very important part in the back swing and the down swing. In this video Dan shares one of his favourite drills for getting the right elbow in the correct position at the top.

I'm finally getting the correct golf swing. I think. Trying to get lag, keep my elbow in, hit down on the ball. It's alot. Very frustrating trying to figure out why I shank the ball. After watching your videos I'm sure I was flipping the club, really bad. Very early extension.no power, shanks, thin shots, you name it. I played much better yesterday and today.not great by any means but better. The bad shots are still there, but I finally hit some iron shots with some lag and power. WOW what a revelation. I drove the ball exceptionally well.I still have slot of work to do to be a good golfer, but with your videos Im sure now it will be an exciting transitionThank you so much your videos are the best, keep them coming.
Thanks for your simple explaination. I was struggling with my arm feeling like I wanted to break it off because it was in the way. Now I know what to work on and well as improving my swing plane to the target.
Getting that right elbow short and external took about a club and half of distance off my swing, and didn't improve consistency, but it did help eliminate the left miss completely. I'm now working on getting it back up and internal. If I'm going to play like crap, I might as well hit it far.
Best succinct instruction ever. ESSENTIAL VIEWING for all who wish to improve.
Love your instruction videos, Dan! This one I really need! I'm so upper body dominate. Need this one.
Also, now that COVID has shut down my hair cutter we have similar hair! Ha!
Thanks for this video. I just had a golf lesson and this was one of the things we were working on.
Thanks Dan, been working with my coach on shallowing and we both liked this drill a lot.
Before I finish watching this I must say that I dig the hair.
Great instruction Dan! Just played 9 and flushed every shot, you are the best!
Awesome drill!!!
A must move for better results! I have been playing golf for over 45 years and seeing my handicap going up and down for so many years, yet I could never suss what was creating this, one day am playing like a low handicap player, the next day am slicing all over the place, so embarrassing, but hey we have all been there yeh, so take in what you have seen from this great intructor and add it to your game, Me am on the way BACK down to single figures
seen Peter Finch doing this drill
great drill, thx
Thank You!
practiced this movement yesterday.
Tried it in the competition today
But for a bad bounce and the ball being wedged between 2 tree roots I would have taken a full shot off my handicap.
Can you please do a video Dan how to play left handed from tree roots
I'm right handed
Thomas Pieters does this so well. Hard to do I'm trying though!
Most pro golfers have their forearm closer to parallel to spine with some internal rotation. GGswingtips talks about this and how internal rotation will actually shallow the club in the downswing. Whereas external rotation as shown on your video will cause you to steepen. Curious to hear your thoughts on these two different views. Not to say one is better, but thoughts on how each can help or hurt.
jaydub333 Curious too. But there are other youtubers that suggest to be careful about a flying right elbow as well.
I looked at Dan's swing analysis of Billy Horschel since he referenced his swing, and his elbow/forearm is also internally rotated (parallel to spine) at the top.
I disagree that Horschel's forearm is parallel to his spine. If you trace the forearm angle and the spine angle you can clearly see that the forearm is much more vertical, suggesting the elbow has externally rotated. Some pros do indeed get their forearm parallel to the spine though, good examples being Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm and Rory, I think it's all evidence that there's no absolute right way of doing it, but for a lot of amateurs this approach is probably preferable to avoid a flying right elbow.
edit: also, I appreciate that GGswingtips is an extremely knowledgeable golf coach but from a biomechanical point of view I don't see how internal rotation would cause a shallower swing. If I grab a golf club and internally rotate my elbow it causes the club to stand up more in the swing. Plus, look at Rickie Fowler. He has a very significant difference between the forearm angle and spine angle, where he has clearly externally rotated his elbow, and he has one of the flattest swings on tour. Compare that to Jim Furyk who has a very steep backswing and look at his elbow position at the top, it's much flatter than his spine angle.
jaydub333 the drill is probably meant as an exaggeration so as to prevent the right elbow from getting too far back.
Nicholas Taylor Good points there. If I remember correctly Adam Scott and Day are more external as well. Personally in my own experience going more external has reduced some pulls and slices in the past but I've never purposely tried being more internal at the top. Might be a good thing to experiment with at the range and see what it does to club path. I believe the suggestion to go internal is based on the sensation of the right elbow quickly going more external as the downwing starts "shallowing" the club. Not sure if that actually succeeds in shallowing more which is why I'm curious on Dans take on that.
Dan, I know you always ask for suggestions on new content. I think a fault / fix series would be amazing. Focus on the the common issues you see inside of your system and swing principles. For instance: push slices. I'm guess you run into that one a bit. How does one correct that inside of your system? As always, many thanks in advance!
I get steep in the downswing I've been trying so hard to keep my trail elbow in,but it's so hard in regular speed
Thanks Dan you seem a nice chap.I won my club championship years ago and i,ve always used this mention.
I look so good on camera in my backswing, but my right elbow is so deep...I hit lots of things and fats and when I catch it right I hit a huge booming draw, is beautiful...I always wondered why the hell I was screaming up I was centered, good turn, keeping spine angle, good sequence, club was shallow and square but still horrible contact...but this is what it was, it took a professional to see the fault and ir made a huge difference cause on paper a normal person like me just couldnt see anything noticeably wrong
I recently began keeping my trail arm ( right elbow ) tucked closer to my body at takeaway for more consistent iron shots......
I find keeping my trail arm close at take-away really helps me , but now I must be " over-doing " it , as now my irons are all working well, but many drives can't seem to get any loft and hook badly from the tee ..
how exactly do I know when it's ok to let my right elbow drift up a little further from my body at the top of my back swing?
my grip is neutral to weak and my swing path is coming inside to out and my club face must be closing at impact ...not sure what to do to correct it ....thanks
this is very helpful thank you so much !
not natural - my need some yoga classes :-) Ideas. For me please, it would be in the down swing where should the hands/butt of club be as you go through from the top backswing. If I have high then I top and if have low, I tend to deliver heavy inti the back of the ball. Also, in the takeaway why do Rickie and Billy H have that short out and early wrist hinge?
Super tip! Great to have that feeling!!!!
malaska golf
Dan, is this more of a downswing feel as the elbow seems very low to be a backswing position ?
I agree you need to have separation going back from the body with the elbow or you can't turn properly, on the way down the elbow should come closer to the body and in front of the hip to shallow club and hit from the inside.
This is great if you are trying to hit a pitch. But if you want to hit it far you need to get your right arm back so that the upper arm ( humerus) is parallel with the ground. This is completely wrong.
I’m sorry William, I have to respectfully disagree. Unless you’re consistently hitting it past Gary Woodland maybe you need a re-think.
