- GHS Endorser, Dave Pomery, sits down to chat about the GHS Bass Boomers Series.
Bass Boomers - Roundwound Nickel-Plated Steel
The classic Power String. One of the most popular bass strings in the world. Extra core strength provides durability. The nickel plating babies your frets.
Magnetically active " Alloy 52" slightly flattened in the winding process to provide a bright, great feeeling string with less finger noise.

It's a little bit naughty to use Chris Squire's and John Entwistle's images to promote these strings as they're both solid Rotosound endorsers.
I've used GHS Bass Boomers for decades. Out of all the brands of nickel plated roundwounds I've tried, Boomers have the most unique tone. They have a low mids punch that makes them very audible in a loud mix, yet they blend perfectly within the band's mix. They also have less of a shrill top end, which I really like.
Keep up the good work, GHS!
I like mine best when they are a few weeks old too. They've lost a lot of "zing" then and sound mellower. I keep mine about half a year and play them every day.
Although similar in construction to the Boomers series, our Bassics feature unsilked ends and our made on automated machines. The goal of this line was to create an affordable bass string that still offered amazing tone!
The Flea Signature strings are still the same great Boomers Bass strings in his preferred gauges. Both are roundwound nickel plated steel that offers a big tone and long life.
Man, I love these strings! 🎸
Just strung these on my Yamaha Rbx170ew PJ bass and they sound great have a really bright sound when slapping and popping, when picking they really ring out. Finger and playing with thumb has a nice low bass thump. Voicing is great I also use Ghs Fast Fret seems to prolong string life keeps the crust of the strings cant wait to see what they are like after they mellow out.
Thanks for stopping by our page! I just checked the specs on that bass and it looks like it has a 34" scale length. Traditionally long scale basses are 34-36" and most if not all standard long scale strings should work. Hope that helps and happy plucking!
Anything that Dave Pomeroy plays is gonna sound great- tone is in those hands
Thanks for the suggestion!
The best string for that style would be Bass Boomers, ML3045 or M3045 sets. Thanks for playing GHS!
Boomers are good for all types of music and blend into the mix really well. If you are looking for a little more pop you might want to try the Progressives which are made out of a Filament Grade Alloy. They will feel a little smoother and will get picked up by the pick-ups a little better due to the magnetically active material.
That bass looks really beautiful, looks like it's seen some wars in it's days.
Great advice regarding maintenance!
These sound so good! They have a beautiful growl to them, and especially work well on a p bass!
Anyone compared these with something like DR Fat beams or Pure blues? Thanks!
thanks, man, i'll try the super steel strings, very cool of you to care!
That is my favourite bass of all time! the finnish...the sound...oh my...where can i get one!!!!
thanks !!!!!!!
I'm sorry to hear that! A lot can affect the life of string including the climate and finger acidity. I'll share your comment with the factory and have them check our stock. Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this issue.
Okay thank you!
I think it's awesome that GHS just have a bunch of videos of what their strings sound like.
Has anyone compared these with the Rotosound 66 nickel-plated? I've used those before, interested in trying these. One thing I like about GHS is they come in a heavier gauge with a .115 E, can't find the Rotos that heavy. I do like the Roto sound and feel though.
Have you tried ordering them through any number of our online distributors?
@visog, he names Squire and Entwistle for using "roundwound strings", being Entwistle the first who used that king of strings, at the end of the sixties.
Roger Watersis known for playing flatwound strings, I would suggest giving the Precision Flats a try!
@lokisylym Hey, these strings are great for all types of music including punk. The roundwound strings give them a nice percussive tone.
@lokisylym Mike is actually an Ernie Ball endorser, but Billie has been using our strings for years
boomers are awesome and have great midrange, people who complain about hem are probably newbs, and use ghs fast fret cleaner it does wonder for all strings
@deadredd10 Have you tried the Boomers or Coated Boomers? A lot of bass players gravitate towards those as an all around string.
@ejdbk flats would make a mellower tone and the sound a bit darker. You could also try the Pressurewound series if you wanted something that was mellow, but not completely flatwound.
Are you looking for more pop? Have you tried our Super Steels strings?
I'm playing funk rock/ alternative and I like the stringy sound. I'm replacing my strings next week and was wondering what's the specific name of strings I should ask for?(Currently using Ernie ball super slinky but might like ghs more)
There are quite a few online dealers including Just Strings, Sam Ash, First Quality Music, Musicians Friend, Guitar Center, etc.
@deadredd10 More durability in terms of string life?
In his Rig Rundown it was said he uses Rotosound 66's
I think the Bass Boomers are good for most genres! Do you feel like you need to cut through more?
@TheGHSStrings
what guage would be the best for a heavy dark tone?
I have .50 - .115 roundwound strings, and they sound fucking awesome even in BEAD.
@ejdbk A little heavier gauge may help, but it has more to do with the materials and metals used.
I've heard a lot of people doing this, but I haven't tried myself!
wuold these sound good on a j bass?
Would Boomers be good for '80's "Hair Metal",or would Super Steel series be better for that application? The problem with stainless steel type strings is that they will wear conventional Nickel Silver frets down real fast. Those who use stainless steel strings, usually have stainless steel frets either installed or that came stock with the guitar or bass. I've used Boomers for years, and will outlast other brands that I've tried.Thanks.
i have an epiphone eb-0,i want to make its tone stronger, darker i have roundwounds on,if i put flats, would that get the job done?
Hey I'd like to sound like Roger Waters (Pink Floyd) on bass, so what strings would you recommend for that sound?
they don't sell those where i live (belgium, kalmthout), thanks for repliyng
Try strings direct, they sell pretty much every kind of string you can think of, and they send them out real quick
Flats feel great, but they are very stiff and feel like piano wire because the tension feels extraordinary. I have some nerve damage in my right hand and my index finger went into spasm after 20mins playing Flats...,I'm going right back to Boomers !! gonna' try to Flea's to see what the low E is all about, sounds like it was made for funkin'....
I would like to hear those on JB.
Hi. Are they also roundcore, or hexcore?
The ones specifically in this video - and our regular - are HEX core.
For a round core option, we have our Round Core Bass Boomers.
@lokisylym Fuck yeah I've been playing metal for years and you can't go wrong with GHS, go for it. Good luck...
@TheMbard Massive +1
@chpsoh it's just a normal p bass.Only this one is from the sixties!
such as?
Rotosound Jazz 77 Flats...
very good strings but live for 5-7days then vertical fall
No way?!? What kind of music do you play?
Nice bass, but not a fan of the strings, i got em cause i love chris squire but find rotosound a bit better for his tone!
I don't like these strings too, mutch, they lack that metalic bite for me. Maybe it's because i like playing chords a little too mutch?
I believe it's cheating using a pre CBS precision bass for a string review... nobody else uses basses that sound that well o.O... it will obviously sound better than in a slightly normal bass :b... anyways... Rotosound is the classic roundwound string... they kind of invented it?
oh wait..flea use it, ok i'm buying it ; P
would progressives wear my frets easier?
Progressives are a nickel-iron, so they may be slightly harder in terms of material. Will they wear your frets faster? There are so many other factors involved here (how heavy you play, how much you play, etc..) that it can't be attributed to just one single thing.
Okay Boomers.
Internet, Pawn Shop, Vintage Dealer, Guitar Dealer....
Damn, that's a pretty aged bass..looks like it took some damage.
Boomers are ruining everything!!!!!!
Except my Bass. 😁
What's the difference between the boomers and sub zero boomers?
The Sub-Zero boomers are cryogenically treated. That gives them a little brighter tonality and a longer tonal lifespan.
GHS Strings oh wow that's pretty neat. thanks.
o.o... John entwhistle!? use an example that plays your strings... not one that played Rotosound throughout his entire life.
Bought a set of boomers and they sound absolutely dead. No edge at all. Sounds nothing like the strings he is playing
