I Bought a Honda VTR1000F Firestorm (Superhawk) | First Impressions

  • I bought a Honda VTR1000F Firestorm or Superhawk as it's called in the US. The Firestorm is one of those motorcycles that had always escaped my attention. But when I started looking for something with a little ‘character’, and also something reasonably reliable and cheap, the Honda Firestorm came on my radar. Yesterday I was able to one, a relatively fresh example from 2004 with 27,000 km on the clock. In this video, I do a little walkaround and I share with you my first impressions of the bike.

    A very nice and quite underrated bike, good choice!
    I had a couple of inline fours, before buying a Firestorm and was immediately smitten by the sound, feel and torque of the big v-twin. I had a red one for over 10 years and rode around France one summer, which was eventually bought and is still owned by a friend (that's the bike, not France 🤗).
    I found the bike really comfortable and had the Remus Grand Prix carbon fibre end cans which looked and sounded really good. A nice soft deep rumble but not too loud. I don't like clear screens and had a darker standard shape one, but I do agree about the Double Bubble ones spoiling the lines.
    As someone has pointed out, the lower belly pan on yours looks like a Pyramid Plastics one. I think those ones really suit the bike well and look far nicer than the other popular belly pan option made by SharkSkinz.
    Issues to be aware of:
    I think the only breakdown I had was when the Regulator/Rectifier failed and left me by the roadside and needing a jump-start to get the short distance to home. It was the original unit and they often failed as they had no cooling fins, so I replaced it with a cheap aftermarket one from eBay which had cooling fins and I never had trouble with the electrics again.
    I had no issues with the suspension, but my friend has replaced the fork springs and rear shock with Hyperpro aftermarket units (a common upgrade).
    The "Stopper mod" is probably the best option if you're really concerned about the CCTs, as they allow auto adjustment as Honda intended, but safeguard against the potential damage should they fail ...which Honda didn't intend!
    Other than that, just ride it and and enjoy it! 👍

      I agree. I too find the bike fairly comfortable, and yes, the rumble is quite addictive.
      Never heard of Sharkskinz before. Thanks for that bit of information! Based on pictures, I also believe mine is a Pyramid. As far as the R/R is concerned: I checked my type with feedback on the forums, and apparently mine is "slightly better than the original one, but not much". 😂 Haven't had the time to really get stuck into the CCT issue. I plan to do a follow-up video when I have the time.

    I have a 1999 in bright yellow that I bought new, lightly modified, then regrettably sold in 2010. Fortunately I stayed in touch with the buyer and he sold it back to me in 2020. I will never part with this bike again. It has so much soul; makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck every time I start it and ride it. Two Brothers exhaust is a bit loud, but I've had Harley guys come up to me and tell me it's the best sounding bike they've ever heard! That says something. What a great bike; it'll keep up with any current sportbike on a twisty road but you can ride it all day. I wish there were still bikes like this available today; I'm glad I have my classic treasure in my garage.

    Love my 98 Firestorm, I’ve enjoyed it for many years and hope to keep it for many more. The engine is perfect for what I want. I’ve tried others but none have that beautiful torque or sweet exhaust song!

    Wonderful bikes. I had a 98 in red. I put 20k on it with no problems. Routine maintenance was done. I did replace the cam chain tensioner with a upgraded unit as the factory tensioners were problematic for some people. Wonderful sound and torque. The bike will grow on you. Only think I found negative was the limited travel on a full tank.

    Cracking bike. I had one back in the day. Just get some risers fitted for the bars and it makes it much more comfortable for longer trips.

    I've had my Firestorm for just over 2 years now and I think I am now hooked on V twins,there are some modifications that are very necessary,the auto cam chain tensioner need to be replaced with manual tensioners as they have been known to fail causing catastrophic engine damage and it's also a good idea to replace the Honda fitted rectifier as it can be prone to overheating. I used one from a Yamaha R1 It could
    also benefit from a firmer rear shock,I fitted a Penske racing unit .Aside from that it handles superbly and the acceleration is something else.

    Pretty nice bike you got yourself, got the red version myself. Came from a cbr600f, immediatly fell in love with the power of the Honda V-twin.
    To Answer some of your questions.. far as i know they come with a red tail light from factory. Bellypan is also aftermarket.. im trying to get my hands on the one you have too.

    I own a 1998 Honda superhawk 996. All original. Love the bike. First thing to go out was the gas peacock valve. And the stator. But it got a long life

    One of my favourite bikes I've even owned.. you'll love it. Not really quick enough to get you into too much bother. Very banned handling and the throaty V Twin very smooth. If I had to say of a downside it likes a drink.

    I love this bike so much. I have a 2007 model sc36 and it's been derestricted, open intake k&n filter, Danmoto Carbon Pipes. Just neat clean and loud. It's a beast after being derestricted. Biggest difference is the mid to top end. It absolutely unleashes at 4,500-7000 now I also added a 6sigma jetting kit for my altitude and temperature intake and exhaust

    That's a really nice VTR that you've got yourself there, the bellypan could be by a manufacturer called 'Pyramid', the taillight doesn't look standard(but i could be wrong) i really like the carbon hugger and front mudguard and would have cost a pretty penny back in the day, the Dominator cans sound amazing and look decent quality too, i've got a 2000 bike so i have the earlier dash but i know what you mean about the speedo, the bikes 2 Achilles heels are the reg/rec and the cct's if both these items have been changed you'll have no problems, enjoy the bike and keep it rubberside down brother 🤘

      Thanks for commenting. In the meantime I have swapped the Dominator cans for the OEM ones. None of my friends wanted to ride with me with the noisy cans, and in all honesty, they WERE a bit too much.

    Your VTR looks awesome! I have the yellow one, can't wait till this cold weather ends and I will finally be able to ride it again :) Also when you were asking about issues with this model - they are pretty reliable but there was a big problem with automatic cam chain tensioners which become faulty and that can cause fatal engine damage, so better to take a look at them and swap them for manual version. Then you should be good to go.

      ​@@Lowfliers I'm from czechia and most of the day it's about 0 degrees of celsia, also snowing sometimes...Don't want to risk some stupid crash, better wait atleast for march and then go for some fast ride.

      @@Ghoster00000 Yeah, snow and freezing temperatures are something else. But as long as it's dry and not freezing, I try to ride as much as possible during winter time. It's good for the bike, and for my mental health. 😉

      @@Lowfliers I'm from the UK and the reason I don't ride much in the winter isn't due to the temps it is because of the huge amount of salt chucked on the roads. Combined with the rain it can wreck your finish unless you spend a ton of time cleaning it after your ride.👍

    Hey welcome from Australia. Tail lens is aftermarket and carbon parts are as well and rare. Nice bike I have a stock tail lens if you have trouble tracking one down

    I've had my Firestorm since 2004, it is a reliable bike. It's got over 60,000 miles. Watch the indicator switch in the cold weather as they can fail. The regulator rectifier can fail, but they are readily available and not too expensive. I hope you are still enjoying the bike.👍🇬🇧

    Good choise. A VTR is a really reliable bike, which makes a lot of fun with just 200kg weight and 109 horse power on curvy roads. The only neg.thing is the high consumption between 6 and 6,5 l per 100km. And the range is low with a lot of breaks to fill it up on longer trips. I own a VTR for 14 years now and 26.000km and the only broken device was a regulator, which costs me 30 Euro. Have a lot of fun with this old school V2 bike....

    A great bike so I hear.. Not owned one myself, but I have 2 V Twins in my collection.. an Aprilia RSV Factory and a Suzuki TL-R. I agree with you, standard is the way to go.

      It's more of a tourer than the RSV, and a little more refined than the TLR.

    I’ve owned one for 5 years. It’s just awesome. Impossible to open the throttle without smiling. The noise, the arse kicking torque, the nimble handling. Usual advice if you’re thinking of getting one… cam chain tensioners and rectifier. Change the air filter. Mine kept stalling when it was hot. The filter was a complete mess. I will not be selling it!

    I have the same bike which is also in matt gunpowder black metallic although I like my mods so I have many aftermarket parts. I also have the same bellypan and rear light. The rear light and the belly pan are indeed both aftermarket parts. The belly pan is either a Pyramid belly pan or a copy of one. The rear lights were only made with a red lens from original. Most clear lens units are LED where yours looks like it has the standard fitting bulbs in it like mine which in my mind is a better quality unit. Common issues if they have not already been addressed.. rectifier and chain tensioners and include checking the lower suspension links as part of you routine service as they are prone to rust/wear.

      Thanks for confirming what I suspected, and thanks for putting a brand name on my belly pan! Interesting stuff. Yes, my rear light has standard bulbs. Chain tensioner was indeed replaced by the previous owner, and I still have to check whether I have the original R/R. I'll check to make sure, but corrosion shouldn't be a problem on mine. It looks like it has been kept in a dry place. I'm probably the first to ride it in winter. ;-)

    I’m interested in your views on maintaining a bikes originality. How close to original would you stay? I ask because I bought a’97 Yamaha Thunderace with low mileage, cosmetically very good and original. However apart from replacing tyres, and fitting a non standard exhaust, nothing else had been changed. As a result I’ve done a lot work replacing service items, new seals, pads and brake/clutch hoses. I’ve kept it original but I got HEL lines in black as it seems a sensible mod. If it we’re you, would you have sourced original hoses for it? If not, what other changes would you consider doing without losing the original look.
    Will you be doing the follow up vid for the Firestorm you mentioned. I’m strongly considering getting one and would be interested in how you found the riding experience. Cheers

      That's a very interesting question, one I have thought about often. As a general principle, I prefer my bikes as original AS POSSIBLE. That being said, there are a few constraints on how far I want take that. Some of my considerations:
      1. Budget: some OEM parts are ridiculously priced and my funds are limited. This is why I will always look for a bike with original fairings, because old stock fairings cost a fortune.
      2. Value of the bike: no point in spending more on replacement parts than the bike's worth. For example, I would go further in bringing back a VTR SP2 to its original condition than I would a Firestorm.
      3. How long I want to keep the bike: in my case, I change bikes often so I don't want to invest in a bike that I will be selling in a few months' time.
      4. Are the parts period correct? I can live with the idea of a period-correct aftermarket carbon fender like the one on my bike, especially if it's a quality item.
      5. Is it a wear part or not? In my opinion, wear items such as brake lines and brake pads don't need to be OEM. Upgrading rubber hoses to steel braided brake lines is fine. AS LONG AS THEY ARE BLACK.

      Everything is always a compromise. I have found that, after purchasing a bike, it's a good idea to ride it for a while before doing any major modifications or investments. When I have just bought a bike I often want to replace everything with original parts, but after a while, I get used to the idea of not having a mint condition, museum piece of a bike and I decide to spend my money on other things.
      Long story short: I condone your HEL brake lines, but you're going to have to cut off the yellow rubber label with the HEL logo. 😉
      Yes, I do plan to do the follow-up vid, but I'll give you the synopsis: great handling bike, lots of character yet dependable. Think of a 90s Ducati twin but without the hassle. Smoother engine too. Front suspension could be a little better, but all in all, it's a great bike. But don't go spending ridiculous money on one. Be patient and keep your eye out for a decent example at the right price.

Manufacturers spend a lot of time and money designing and building their products, so adding aftermarket items is always going to be at risk of being a waste of my money. Second, bikes are built to be ridden, otherwise I see no point in having it.
      I hear you about the little HEL tags. A detail I will attend to soon 😊👍

    How's the range? i remember when these came out there were a lot of complaints about the size of the tank. i'm looking to get back into biking soon as a break of a couple of years and i've always had a soft spot for these whenever i've seen them out on the road so they're definitely on my shortlist.

      I own a 1997 model with the small 16l tank, and with the engine consumption of in average 6,5 l per 100 km you will have every 220km a mandatory fill up break.

      It's not very good. I have the later model with the larger tank, so I'm lucky I guess. But it's still thirsty. But I don't mind it that much. I have a more sensible bike and this one is mostly for fun. Also, there's no shortage of gas stations where I live.

    I've got a question for you Superhawkers. I have a '98, and I absolutely love everything about the bike, however, the handlebars absolutely kill my hands. It puts so much of my upper body weight on the heels of my hands, its actually painful. There are lots of options for installing different bars, risers, etc, but in order to change the position enough to make them comfortable, the fairing either has to be removed or cut. I really don't want to cut it, as the Honda plastics are no longer made. The other option would be to remove the fairing, but this bike is funky looking as hell without the fairing. Though about polishing everything under the fairing, but I would still have to install another headlight assembly. There really is no easy solution. Do any of you have any thought on this subject?

      I have no experience with regards to handlebars. I think the Superhawk would make for an ugly streetfighter, with the side mounted radiators and all. There are a few owner's groups on FB. Perhaps there you can find someone to help you out.

    Geweldige motor maar dat zal je ondertussen al wel weten.
    Karakter,goede wegligging betrouwbaar, mooi geluid zowel snel als traag mee te rijden.
    Distrtibutiekettingspanners en gelijkrichter dien je best preventief te vervangen door respectievelijk manuele spanners/ mosfetgelijkrichter en de lagers van de link in de achterbrug komen wel eens vast te zitten, vrijmaken en nieuwe keerringen dan kom je der wel mee…
    En ook de connectors/bekabeling van de gelijkrichter onder de zadel roesten en liggen vaak aan de basis van het doorbranden van de gelijkrichter/batterij…
    Had altijd een speed triple, maar ben verliefd geworden op de VTR…. Voor het budget een fantastische motor!

      Zeker een fantastische motor, en helemaal voor de prijzen die gevraagd worden op de tweedehandsmarkt.
      Ik heb het gecheckt bij een Honda-mecanicien met decennialange ervaring en die wist me te vertellen dat de kettingspanners geen significant probleem vormen, of toch niet meer dan bij andere modellen. Voorlopig ook nog geen problemen met de rec/reg. Die kan ik nog altijd vervangen als hij de geest geeft.

    Fireblade was the cbr900. Love my superhawk but do want a fireblade. But you get the belly fairing where the superhawk doesn't. Luckily there's the internet and I'll get one eventually

      You timed this question perfectly, because today I rode 550 kilometers or 350 miles through the twisties on the Firestorm. Did it without any problems or aches. The VTR is marketed as a sports tourer, and that's exactly what it is: sportier than a full-on touring machine, but also more comfortable than a real sports bike. I wouldn't recommend it for week long riding trips, but "small amounts of touring" should be no problem!

      I brought one last summer and fitted cnc bar risers and a touring screen which suits me better, I believe you can fit VFR bars which also give a higher riding position.

    Купил себе такой же VTR 1000f 2004 год , такой же цвет ,только он из Японии спидометр до 180 и все оригинальное , (ваш нижний плавник смотрится лучше оригинального )кроме поворотников их разбили при транспортировки 😢, жду сезона , чтобы прокатнутся на этих прекрасных близнецах , ровных дорог и хорошего настроения

    Crap standard suspension, Poor tank range on early models. Cam chain tensioner issues.
    Fab bikes though. I loved mine

    Pick up a spare regulator/rectifier and Tuck that under the seat.
    19mm handlebar risers will help on longer trips.

    I always loved the sound of the VTR and have a feeling if I had rode one I would have had to get one other than for one thing.. I have been warned about the really high fuel consumption of these bikes and already have a guzzler to feed..
    Perhaps the riding style has a lot to do with MPG but then again how could you resist opening the throttle with such an awesome raspy, torquey motor..

      VTR's are relatively cheap to buy where I live. I would say: bite the bullet and buy one. You won't regret it.

      @@Lowfliers I see them going here in Eire for relatively small money too, for example there was one going for 1200 euros that looked original and had no visible damage or issues I think a 97 or 98 and the next one up was maybe 1700 with even lover miles something like 20k km..
      The sp models on the other hand have expotentially increased in value over the last years, so the firestorm seems to be In that stage now where they are probably as cheap as they are going to get before somebody starts the ball rolling with say some articles or test reviews to point them out as a future modern classic then they shoot up in price..
      I always loved the booming sound of the vtr

    I've seen plenty of red and yellow superhawks, but yours is the only one I've seen in that color scheme. I think the carbon fiber fenders go well with the color scheme. In my not so expert opinion, I think it is just as distinctive if not more distinctive than any Ducati I've ever seen. The bubble windscreen also looks great, and I bet it is superior to the stock one for deflecting wind.
    The only thing I don't like about any bike is logos, emblems, and numbers. These identifiers don't belong on bikes that are works of art so I really don't like the manufacture's name on the fenders either. I always remove manufacturer's logos from any vehicle I own if I can. It's my vehicle, and I'm not being compensated for advertising their product so that's always my first modification.
    I think crash bungs need to be modified to blend in with the rear foot pegs. Haven't figured out what other function they could serve on the forward ones yet, maybe something to rest your knees on. They remind me of training wheels, but I think to the afficionado they're no worse than chicken strips on the tires. However, if there are no chicken strips on your tires, then it's just good sense to have crash bungs on your bike anyways.
    I've always had inline four sport bikes, but I've also always had v twin muscle cruisers and choppers as well, and the V twin sport bikes suddenly popped onto my radar as well a few months back so I've been looking at superhawks, SV1000's, VTR's and R1's as far as a thousand miles away. I'll drive a thousand miles to save a thousand dollars and get a bike with low miles.
    I also get a bit depressed in the winter, but where I live winter is the best time to ride as there's little to no rain, and it isn't oppressively hot so riding gear feels good and comfortable all winter long.

      Thanks for the detailed look at my bike. You're right, manufacturers tend to overdo it with their logos. If it's done tastefully, I can live with it, but not when they're all over the place. In the meantime I have put on the original exhausts and so I also took off the rear crash bungs. The forward ones are still there. I'm just afraid I might drop the bike the minute I take them off. 😔

      @@Lowfliers I've never had crash bungs so I don't know what is involved in removing them, but if they're easy to remove, I'd take them off and look at the bike without them. A friend of mine refers to these bouts of fear as "riding the broom". I call it "Dumbo's feather". Those crash bungs aren't protecting you from dropping the bike. I know people who don't ride their bikes enough and as a result they develop this irrational fear of riding their bikes. It's not completely irrational in that if one doesn't ride their bike very often, their riding skills suffer.
      People who are always doing stand up wheelies and other tricks on their bikes have those crash bungs, but if you look at their bikes, they're all scratched and dented up because crash bungs are most effective when a bike is dropped. In an actual crash, they're effectiveness is minimal. The point here is that they're essential for those riders who want to minimalize damage to their bike. It could mean the difference between being able to ride your bike home versus having to tow it home.
      I've probably seen these crash bungs on bikes for a while without ever noticing them, or knowing their purpose. Most people probably don't notice them at all. They're like helmets. They're practically standard on sport bikes these days.

      @@shnarklevonbarkle110 Well, the reason I am not opposed to crash bungs is that they limit the amount of damage to the bike when it's dropped. I don't fear riding my bike. In fact, I ride it a lot (about 10 times what the average rider does). So the chance of dropping the bike on some wet patch is considerable. At least once in the past crash bungs protected my bike from severe structural damage. Crash bungs can mean the difference between scuffs and a cracked engine casing. Some say crash bungs increase the chance of the bike flipping itself over and bending the frame, so I guess even in sliding you need a little luck. 😉

      @@Lowfliers That's an interesting point about flipping the bike. I suppose if the bike goes down it might slide over a pothole rather than getting caught by a crash bung. Motorcycles were always my primary means of transportation all the way up into my mid 30's. They didn't have crash bungs back then, and I didn't wear a helmet until it was mandated by law. However, in my old age, I'm beginning to see the wisdom in these precautionary measures. If you ride a lot there's probably a higher chance of some sort of mishap, but people that don't ride that much probably don't have the reflexes necessary to prevent dropping a bike. Other than the bike I have now, I've either wrecked or dropped all of my bikes.
      The first time I ever saw a crash bung, I didn't know what it was, and I barely even noticed it to begin with so I think they're a good idea. If I bought a bike with them already installed, I would probably leave them on the bike.
      I see lots of people advertising bikes that have been dropped and they always say it was the guy they bought the bike from. Nobody likes to admit that they dropped their bike, but I bet this would cease to be much of an issue if all bikes had those crash bungs installed.

    Have owned one for over 20 years, get a spare voltage regulator, your gauges will go dead and then engine will stop as regulators overheat , weak battery accelerates burnout of poor stock regulator, replace with R6 finned regulator.

    100% not a legit rear light, i would change that for a red lense asap.
    i have 2 of these and 2 RC51 SP1, love the RC best bike of all ive ever owned but the Storm is just a dirty bike that carb sound is amazing and the way it goes for a bike of its age and so on is EPIC

      @@Lowfliers you can always find a bike that needs work like i just did here in Switzerland, i paid 1500 for the SP1, except a few bolts the bike is all there and just needs putting together and fairings painted, it runs when put on a battery. im actually thinking about selling it, i just had Spinal Surgery and i cant finish the bike sadly. the complete bike im just going to garage it and i think i will need to stop riding.
      RC51 was my dream bike and i couldnt turn either of what i got down, other bike needed just bodywork so i just got a set and now its running had that 3 years, its outstanding

      @@SRSpoony I don't think I have the mechanical skills to do a complete restoration. Also, I'm a little tired of mechanical issues. Had too many of those the last year. Sometimes you just want to ride, you know? Sorry to hear about your surgery. Perhaps bar risers or sth like that will allow you to continue riding? In any case, good luck.

      @@Lowfliers oh i get what about mechanical stuff, this isnt a restoration this is just put back together the bodywork and the tank and paint, ive already done the rest.
      i think if i move it will be sold but if i stay where im living now it will be sent to a garage if i get no offers, im not saying i would sell it but if i get an offer then its gone.
      1 thing you NEED to do for your storm if its not done is fit manual Cam chain tensioners, its the 1 main issue that will kill the bike, the automatics are SHIT.
      in the 1st year of my bike from new in 98 mine had 3 failurs in 2000 miles total, 2 front heads and a complete engine, it wa fitted with manuals from that point on and hasnt had an issue since in 151k miles. rest is just keeping it looked after n servicing
