Those deep potholes and curbs can seemingly come out of nowhere, even when our full attention is on the road. If the strike is severe enough, there's a high chance that damage will occur to both the wheel and suspension components. Even minor damage should be looked at as it can be a safety hazard.

As promised here is my story: In October of 2009 I went to a Halloween party with a few friends. We all had an agreement that one of us would be a designated driver for the return trip. We took my E39. It was pretty late at night for the return trip so there wasn't much traffic. We were on route 4 near Farmington CT when all of the sudden we hear a loud bang. The front left door air bag and a-pillar air bag randomly deploy. When this happened there were a few moments of absolute confusion as to what had just happened because nothing obvious has occurred to cause the airbags to deploy as they did. We got the car pulled over to the side of the road and turned it off to get out to see what had happened. There was zero damage on the front or the side of the car and no obvious reasons for two airbags to have deployed. Shortly after a Farmington police officer pulled up behind us which worked out because the additional lights from the police car helped paint the picture of what had happened. When we looked down at the road we could see a single drag mark on the road following the path of the car. It was at this point where I knelt down and looked under the front of the car. To my astonishment I saw a rock, roughly 8" wide and 5" tall (kind of an oval shape) had wedged itself under the front subframe of my car. The impact of the rock on the subframe was sufficient enough to trigger the airbag sensors located underneath the drivers seat tricking the SRS system into thinking there was a frontal collision. The rock was also painted black which made it look like the entire thing was a really shitty Halloween prank. As much of a horror story as the above was, the dealer I had the car brought to to fix the damage under my car insurance companies request, did a horror show of "repairing" the damage but that's an entirely different story.

Yikes. This reminds me of a similar story I had; was driving back home from work at night when I came up on something laying on the road. It seemed like plastic, so I wanted to go over it and not worry, but my gut told me to be careful. I slow down, turn my high beams on, and my eyes couldn't believe what they'd seen: it was a whole shredded tire-what had appeared to be a thin strip of liter plastic was actually thick, wide, and wretched, and could have caused serious damage to my car! I couldn't believe it, because I swear that shit looked so small from just 150ft away before I turned my high beams on.
I stopped, put my hazards on and took that shit off the road before someone else's unlucky son/daughter got their car messed up by it.

Bent the heck outta two wheels (and flattened two tires) on my Miata (NC) at night where a big chunk was missing of pavement from the edge of the road.... everything else was good! Much love to FCP!

There was a 4 lane road,
and I crossed an intersection with a green light.
There were no left turn arrows on the lane, which was the 2nd lane.
I suddenly, I very sharply hit a 8 inch curb at about 54 MPH, or 72 KPM!
My tire blew off with a Big Bang!
I was only 4 inches away from slamming into the traffic light!
What a close call!
I am very thankful that I am not in the emergency room right now.

Ran out of room before a turn in the road, rainy night, no abs. Straight into a curb and smacked the guardrail pretty hard. Front and rear suspension totaled as well as passenger body panels 😔
Also.. drove across a ladder on interstate at night in my wife's 2005 Focus ST... didn't even knock it out of alignment! Drove across a 2x4 (at night) in another car a couple decades back.

I bumped into a curb with a VW Golf GTI 2017 model, the car has since made some light noise as if something is touching somewhere. When I brake at high speeds there's a mild vibrate felt on the pedal and steering wheel.
Can you advise of the possibilities of what could be wrong, I've done an alignment and checked bearings. noise still there.
Changed from a hatchback to an f30. So wasn't used to the length. Long story short, when turning I kerbed the rear driver side wheel. Now I have play in my steering even after alignment.
I have a 2010 Toyota corolla. Last week I was diagnosed with pneumonia but I thought after getting some rest and antibiotics the doctor prescribed I could still go to work while I was getting better.( Even though the doctor strongly suggested I go to emergency because I told him before going to see him I was coughing a lot at home and ended up briefly passing out. Long story short I went to work and on my way home less than a block from home I had another coughing tizzy and briefly lost consciousness and hit the curb with the side of my car. It took out my front wheel. (The next day my condition worsened and I was hospitalized for 3 days). A couple days later I showed signs of improvement and decided to look into my car. I took the bent wheel off and put the spare on and took it for a test drive. It went clonk, clonk and the steering was way off. I inspected down below and noticed the arm was bent and maybe the ball joint after comparing it to the driver side. I'm not a mechanic but I am an electrician for 30+ years and have been able to learn and apply mechanical work to my car through people's videos on CZcams like yours. I see what I have to do to replace the control arm and ball joint. The tie rod and strut looked ok I think. I'm hoping I don't have a bent steering system now. My parts come in on Friday. I guess once I replace the parts and I still have steering issues I'll have bigger problems to deal with. Any constructive input is appreciated. I'm trying to fix my vehicle this way as money is tighter these days and efficiency helps out. I do appreciate people who make videos like yours.
All I'm hearing from this video is that I will be lucky to find out my car is not totaled, because I sustained what I believe is a stronger blow than hitting a curb (someone struck my rear wheel). Since it's a 4matic, I really really really hope that the potential damage is not only localized to the wheel that was actually hit, but that, if there is any damage, I can fix it without having to do some work on all four sides!
So i realized after i bought my f32. But my front right side is lower than the other. Could this be a sign of the shock slipping thru the knuckle?
I was leaving the parking lot. Instead of backing up out of the parking space i pulled my truck forward. I turned my wheels to the right and drove half way up the curb in the parking lot. I backed up slowly. My steering wheels is still straight the truck doesnt go to the right or left. Do you feel my alignment and right front tire balance should be okay? Do want issues with my truck's tires.

Question ?I accidently hit my front of my car it was in drive after backing up . I drove into a telephone pole by mistake , due mis distancing the space from turning while in drive; I wanted to turn right after backing up out of my driveway and hit the pole.. Will that hurt my alignment or steering or both. I hit it by accident on the front of the car.Ii buffed out the scratches but scared I might of did damage to the front of the car. My car is a 2003 chevy cavalier . What damage did I do? I just got this car like a month ago. I had to fix like minor things but afraid I may or caused front end damage to the car. I am so careful and pay close attention but that mis distancing that pole I was mad at myself for that. Can u tell me what I need to do or should I get it checked out. It took a hard bump but nothing is dented, the decal license plate holder was not even cracked, no cosmetic damage . I checked to see if I cracked anything and nothing was cracked on the outside. Could I of done or gotten internal damage from rhat.? I just got my license. So still fine tuning yet. Thank you for your advice if any.
My f series m135i hit a curb in snow; rear wheel now has negative 4 camber but 2 garages can’t see no bent arms. What could be off .

Great video. I have question. My car fell off a jack while replacing the rear wheel. It’s a BMW 540i. It fell on the knuckle area and rotor or heat shield were not hit. Car drives normally and alignment is fine. Is there anything else should I inspect?
I would pay most attention to evaluating why your car fell off the jack in the first place and ensuring at all costs that it doesn't occur again in the future.
Does this also apply if fall off a tall curb?
I hit a piece of 4"x4" post. Took out tire, wheel and burped both hydraulic motor mounts, then needed realignment.

Typically we recommend a shop with a good reputation and reviews, with an in-house alignment machine. If you can find one that specializes in your make and model even better
I hit my rear tire going around a curve on a curb, RWD, and running BC coilovers. Somehow the suspension dropped lower on that side… any recommendations? No other apparent problems with camber or driving alignment. Getting under the car tomorrow.

I was reversing and a i hit a curb at maybe 10 kmh i saw no scratch or anything on rim only a dirty scuff should i be concerned
It was raining and I hit a curb at high speed...around 60-65 mile/h.... The rim was completely desintegrated....in pieces...the face of the rim was sperated from the rest....a serious hit....I changed the destroyed wheel, put the spare and drove home at 50 miles/h....Tomorrow will assess the damage by my trusted mechanic....hopefully a bent control arm (noticed a slight curb at the end of it)

@@eresendiz73 Yes sir, as expected= a new control arm on the front left side and a new bearing on the rear left....an alignement and everyting was super...around 1200$ cad to fix everything....Today, I got a new clutch set installed (flyweel, dual mass pressure plate, clutch disc and throw out bearing with slave cylinder- was dead by the way) at 283704 km for 1900$. The car drives like new again...hope I bring it to 500 000 km...

I am NEVER going to my local McDonald's EVER AGAIN because they recently put an octagon shaped yellow curb that separates the drive thru lane from the parking lot, and that makes the drive thru lane WAY too narrow.
A few weeks ago, they didn't have what I wanted, so I decided to leave, and I could have SWORN I was past that curb, but sadly, the right side of my car ran over it. My tires and rims have no visible damage (at least on the outside), but I'm worried sick about my suspension and everything connected to it.
It snowed and I wanted to impress my coworkers by drifting around a corner. My fault obviously. I have drifted many times before but my mind just shut down

Me too, lost control and drove straight with brakes on into curb with both front wheels, seems like nothing happened, steering is still straight only rim got scratched and the curb was painted black , never again turning dtc off !
now that someone liked my comment, i actually visited wheel alignment the other day and they couldnt do it because my wishbone bushings are bad.

I had just bought a 2019 Genesis G70 3.3t and was just cruising around at night with some friends, went through a green light at an intersection not realizing there was an apartment complex on the other side of the 4 way intersection. The road turned went from 45mph speed limit straight into a 90 degree turn with no signs or lights so i didn't have time to react, slammed on the brakes and turned, slid into and over the curb into the apartment complex sign which totally destroyed my front end. Bumper was destroyed, ripped my intercooler off, smashed my headlight, bent the strut, the tie-rod mounting point on the knuckle snapped off and bent the sub frame where the control arm mounts.
How much did it cost?
everything he covered is what Im dealing with as a mystery event. Something happened and no one spoke up. Now I own a family vehicle that had waaayyyyy more safety issues than I want to worry about especially with an airbag recall... death traps.. watch fight club. His position really exists and they really in fact save pennies over lives. all my lower front control arm bushings are toast the brake rotors are like 2" diameter too small and its so top heavy stusts and control arms are good for 80K tops... I say know your risks and frickin send it. What a scam. They have the nerve to call some of these "SUV's" but a curb will total it. Not even a splash guard. Man Im pissy. My wheel is at 10:30 and front drivers side is super negative camber and the passenger side is super positive and almost looks like it sticks out of the wheel well. Didnt notice the extremity until I applied spacers to the winter wheels... pfft it was ugly. Now after new struts, rotors/pads and tie rod ends. my wheel is crooked and I have a weird wobble when I accelerate. Only under a load though like stressing out low rpms up a hill... once I get going I never feel the wobble again until I stop and go again. The energy is not wobbling in the steering wheel its more just through the floor board and seat real quick. Not even in the gas pedal or brake. I want to think its sub frame but it was fine until i replaced a couple parts. Oh and another symptom is turning to the left is effortless and smooth but turning to the right is barely noticeably stiffer. Again drivers side front is negative camber and pass. side is positive. That might be why. Almost feels like an entirely loose hub like the strut is loose at the base. Bearings and lbj's are great as far as I know. If anyone has a lightbulb please help a brother out thanks guys and great video man you rock. Well done.

@@quaaludditeit was the half shaft bearing on the passenger side. No havent done it and it hasnt gotten worse. I have way more sounds and bangs than before though thats for sure. Did the axles the motor mounts all that. Next is inner tie rods. I'm sure those are whats popping but damn I didnt think they made 3 or 4 sounds cuz thats what I have. Oh and starting a couple weeks ago I hear this like deep creeking sound. I wonder if all this sound in front of my feet is the steering column where it meets the rack. Who knows but its super ghetto now. One other symptom I noticed is stiffer turning to the right. Nice and smooth and easy on the left and a lil stiffer turning to the right. Wonder if that can be a clue to something but I guess we'll see after inner tie rods. At that point she's on her own Im moving way on.

Can a wheel bearing cause abs light? My rear left axel was curroded after hitting a curb hard. My abs light came on and had a code for rear left no signal. I replaced abs sensor 3 times and my rear left axel still light and code are on. Maybe wheel bearing is next?
Either a bad bearing or ring on the axle can contribute to that!
How does this guy know it’s not my fault?
I have an 06' Civic and a few months ago I ran over a cement divider in a parking lot and just yesterday I ran over the curb. Both times I scraped the bottom of my car and never had any real problems until today I got in my car and noticed my car vibrates really bad when I put it in reverse. I've noticed it doing that in the past but today was more then usual. I know you'd have to see the car to diagnose what's wrong but any ideas what may be wrong? What'd cause it to vibrate in reverse? This is my first car and I'm new to all of this lol. Any suggestions or input would really help. Thanks.
Transmission I'd assume
i have vibration at 45 mph. tires and wheel are brand new. tie rod, lower control arm are also replaced. im not sure what else to check

could be, the way to test it is put in neutral jack the car up and spin the wheel if there is noise coud be bearing or brakes.If you have aftermarket rims make sure you have hub centric rings this is very very important . Double check lugs if tightened. If lug not tight that can cause wobble. Check the rust on the hub shiny metal on the outer part on wheel hub is an indicate that your rims are wobbling and causing friction make sure lug nuts are tight and secure. I troubleshooted mine a couple of days ago same issue as yours i thought my bearing is shot or my brakes sticking it turns out i just need hub centric rings and retighened lugs.

I jump a curb and checked everything and all is fine. But the front passenger was the first to take the impact. Would a bad bearing cause some steering wheel vibration?
Very well could, yes - you should hear some "wobbling" noise if it's a wheel bearing, or check for play-by-hand pushing on the wheel.
That intro 🤣 couldn't avoid it not my fault. Hit a curb turning left at a light pretty hard. Car still drove perfectly straight but steering wheel was sideways. Got an alignment drove a tiny better steering wheel still sideways. F32

I hit a piece of wood while driving 70 mph on the interstate. Took my car into a shop and they only did a front end alignment and said everything is fine. I'm taking it to another shop cause the driving feels off now.
can't find what I want to hear. SO.. It's a tow truck. I couldn't stop. I turned out of the way to avoid a crash, not real fast but under 30MPH. As I was about to hit curb, I turned to my left, and BAM!! Bounced up and over. I pulled off, and seen I have a flat. I repair it. Now my steer feels loose. And all over the place. Won't hold a straight line if it hits any off lines or... It's a 1990 ford. F350. No tire wear that's bad. But if I let go of the wheel she moves over to the right. 3 options to me. But I wanna be sure. Tie rod doesn't seem to bad a shape.. But I do see a slight dip at the top going into or inside of truck.. Not leaning outward.. Making me thing Upper ball joint..

This just happened to me last night 😭
I was drunk driving in a Kia Soul. Took a turn to fast and my rear passenger wheel hit the curb. Just checked the tire and there’s a slight cut in the tire. And now every time I drive it feels like this back wheel is out of alignment with the rest of the car. When I say that I mean when I turn and accelerate(i.e. on a road with bends) it feels like that one tire is slow to calibrate with the rest of the car. Scale of 1-10 how bad is that and is there anything I can as someone whose not a mechanic?
kind of like asking how bad is a broken finger. in the rear you have the torsion beam, the hub, the strut, the spring, and not much more. since there’s no adjustments that could be made to the rear axle of a kia soul i’d take a guess and say there’s gonna be some damage. firestone has lifetime alignments so go there, get your shit fixed and realigned then next time you jump a curb you’ll be ok💀
I hit the gas kind of hard in the rain yesterday and me not being used to rwd crashed my Mercedes straight over a double curb. Its a c240💀. Moral of the story; it doesn't take much power at all, it can happen to anyone. The bottom of my radiator can vouch 😭
I hit a curb, took it to the shop, they told me suspension and tire looks good, car drives good, no pull only thing i notice is car sounds louder, noise coming from that area

I just banged the shit out of my rim LOL making a left way to fast. Had to replace the rubber and the rim! Both DESTROYED. Now I got to go check why it's pulling to the right. I hope it has nothing to do with the frame .

Well I am going to try to make this simple as possible because I know nothing about wheel bearings control arms etc.. the other day I was going to pick up a sandwich I'm two cars come speeding down a Two lane heading one Way. Both nearly running me over, therefore I had to roll my car up on the Little Island curve maybe 8 inches, causing a complete blow out of my tire which scared fortunately I was one block away from the tire shop . Got their mind you I am in a 2019 Kia Sportage LX. So the young man put a 225 65 r17 on front driver side. Even though tho my tires take 225 60 r17 at which I didn't know that at the time. Started driving I don't thinkn errthang is ok. All of these lights were lit up DBS, ESC light, and stayed on. My truck I was pulling hard to the left couldn't hardly control it when I drove especially when I turned, had to drive real slow home. Don't know if it's because of the wrong size tire or did I mess something up. I'm literally scared to get back in it don't see a mechanic for another day or so. Any ideas on what might be damaged, I just got my car back from being fixed ( window bused and popped column of course).from being stolen. Ugh😢 HELP IM NERVOUS. THANKS FOR ALL RESPONSES.
I had a curb strike that caused the steering wheel to be off center. I was told that none of the suspension components were bent, so I just got an alignment. How did the steering wheel go off center without the tie rod being bent?
It doesn't take much of a bend to cause that.

A friend drove up a curb probably going about 35+ mph. The left tire is up against the frame now. I think everything you pointed out in this video is bent.

i was too sleepy to be driving
Yeahhhh, i curbed my 89 supra poppin clutch out of a U turn.. Bent my lower control arm, DEMOLISHED my lower ball joint, and blew my steering rack seal now im leakin like crazy! I drove 6 hours the following weekend there and back to get a whole front end, swapped everything in with poly bushings, just need my steering rack!
Bro I drove straight into a curb going like 40-50 I broke the ball joint and I believe the shock and lower control arm are bent

I had a girl in my car, decided to show off and turned DSC fully off on my M550i, while making a right I give it almost full throttle making the car throw the ass as we say, then I noticed I got to much angle so I swing it to the left, I also got tooooo much angle doing that which made the car do a 360 into a curb, my rim got fucked, and i broke the trailing arm, drove around not knowing it was broken with my car wobbling right and left when i would accelerate till i found out got it fixed 😂😂😂

E93 330i. Was raining very hard. Turned off traction control and gunned it off a roundabout, put too much lock to get the back end out. Used corrective lock to get it back in line, then lost it again, and headed towards the kerb , panicked and stomped on the brakes which pivoted front end onto the kerb and pivoted the back into the kerb. The result : rear right wheel fully toed inwards and crabbed home afterwards. Had to get it towed to the garage. £1600 later all is kinda fixed. Car still still slightly pulls to the left Even when holding the wheel straight.
Lesson learned
At least you were able to get it home!

I did exactly the same thing in my w203 Mercedes, i completely destroyed the bottom of my radiator and the thick metal part right under it. Im starting to wonder if german cars in the rain without traction control just cant handle it 😂

I live in a first world country in Europe, roads are smooth as silk...
50% income tax, 21% VAT, capital gains tax, Petrol is $10 a gallon, council taxes, real estate taxes, estate taxes, roadtax @ $150 a month (depending on your car, SUV is $300 a month), universal healthcare but still $220 a month plus $500 a year if you need treatment.
But at least we don't have to worrie about holes in the road...

Funny I pay all that in UK and the roads are falling to pieces
I live and greece with the same taxes etc but the roads are awful

We pay even more taxes in belgium and still got crappy roads and healthcare.
