- Recently I started to experience errors withing RdR2. The game would crash to Desktop after 10-15 minutes of playing and I would get an error message stating 'Red Dead Redemption exited unexpectedly'. I was worried that it would render the game unplayable for me. But luckily I found a reliable fix. And since Rockstar seems to not care about fixing the issue on their end, I thought it's worth sharing a quick tutorial on how to fix the crashes. I hope this helps!

Bit random, this didn't fix it for me - however, when I went back to Vulkan from DX12 after trying this, that fixed it!

This is exactly what I've been doing searching for a fix. Disappointing as I heard this game was a great western sim.
Change the computer date to 1/1/2019 and turn off the automatic update of time. It works
Just in case anyone else can't find optional features it has been moved on Windows 10 as of 2024. You can find that option in Settings > System > Optional Features (Scroll down to the second option from the bottom) > Add a feature > Graphics Tools. Great video 👍

Thank you kindly internet stranger! Played the RDO standalone version for approx. 90 hrs via Steam with no issue and started getting this error out of nowhere. Usually only about 10-15 mins of playtime after launching the game maximum. After applying your fix, played for a solid hour with no issues. Did notice a downgrade in sharpness from where I had my graphics settings with Vulkan... oh well, at least I can actually play the game now, most likely just need to tweak the settings. Thank again, great job!!!
this actually fixed my isuue I was facing this problem for months and I contacted rockstar support and they couldnt fix the issue

I am just wondering why vulkan crashes. In my case, i wanted to play vulkan ghost recon breakpoint but it always crashes after a little while i am ingame or benchmarking in the game. If i am in the Menu, the game dont crash. And if i am going into with normal direct x it does not cras either. Whats wrong with vulkan?

So this what happen to me, i open the game and start to load online, and finished loading screen after that about 5 sec in game, game start to freeze and i cant move, while the audio its still running well, it only happen in online not in story mode, please help me

I've watched many vidios like this and none of them work- I modded using scripthook and rampage. But after i used those im not able to enter rdr2. After i get onto the loading sceen, about after 5 seconds it crashes and goes back to the desktop. :/
Mine just randomly started doing this yup 10-15mins in it just stops right back to desktop iv literally restored my system to try and get it to work but still doing it after the app is running for 10mins or so very very annoying can't seem to figure out why

uhh i cant change the api in the game cause the vram limitation, how do i change it in the system.xml file? do i put just "Directx12" in the place where vulkan is written?
I don’t think that will work. If your GPU can’t run dx12 due to power limitations, forcing it in the xml file probably won’t solve the issue. But you can try of course. Worst case, you can always change it back. Good luck. Hope you get the game to work.

Still didn't work for me after all the tries, did try with vulkan and directx12 after getting the graphic components, before and after updating drivers, playing on AMD components. Not sure why is this happening now, i've played it a couple years ago without problems with the same PC but did not ended it. That's sad.

Mine does not have optional features,and nothing that says tools anywhere.I have fixed it before but their FN updates F it all over again.

So I have a Nvidia GeForce GTX 750 Ti and 8GB Ram but I can't even *start* the game. The main menu opens, I can go into settings and all, but when I try to go into the story mode, it starts loading normally, but after a few minutes on the loading screen, precisely 10-15 seconds after the little revolver clip pops up on the bottom right corner it crashes to the desktop without any error messages. The minimum requirements for RDR2 says GTX 770 2GB but when I searched on google I saw people play it with a GTX750 Ti so what the hell is wrong with my PC? I've tried both Vulkan and DX12, all settings on low, nearly every possible resolution settings, updated my graphic card drivers, optimized the game on GeForce Experience but nothing seems to work it just crashes and crashes and crashes..... Please help me :(
Hey Ege. It sounds to me like your hardware may not be powerful enough. You’re on the very low end of the minimum required specs. And 8gb of ram is also not a lot. Depending on what cpu you have, the game might simply not run. I would google terms like ‘running red dead 2 on minimum specs’ or ‘run rdr2 on minimum hardware requirements’. Good luck.
I use SLI to play red dead at maximum graphics and putting on directx12 just makes the game unplayable with 20 fps and stuttering and im 100% sure the sli doesnt cause the crash cause with it off game also crashes so idk what to do.

This worked the first time I did it. However after a few gameplays, it started crashing again. The settings were still on dx12. It doesn’t help even when I switch to Vulcan.
