Misoprostol belongs to a group of medications knows as synthetic prostaglandin E1 anologues, and a synthetic prostaglandin E1 analogue is a class of drug which binds to a prostaglandin E1 receptor and mimics the effects that natural prostaglandins would have. Misoprostol is used to protect and promote the healing of gastric and duodenal ulcers by inhibiting hydrogen ion secretion within the stomach and promoting the secretion of mucus and bicarbonate which provides a protective layer for the stomach epithelial cells. Misoprostol is also a potent uterine stimulant which causes contraction of the myometrium and is utilised in the prevention and treatment of postpartum haemorrhage, the termination of pregnancy and the medical management of miscarriage.
