If no one's mentioned it yet, a 'poppet' is a kind of wax doll, used in forms of witchcraft, making it an ironic nickname for Ella. Very clever of the writers.
Damn didn't know that thanks I thought it was just close to puppet
Lol That's cool
I got the impression Ella was always messed up even as a little girl and her mother recognized that, so she kept her busy and under control with the stop motion stuff. Without her mother's control, she reverted
Just like Pearl (2022)
I felt like she had a childhood trauma she been suppressing so long it consumed
No.
@@lifewithlee6298 yes my thoughts exactly.
I would have to rebuttal this by presuming the extreme tedious art of this field of work, as it is not meant for the weak minded. The angle that you are getting at is more of a optimistic view of the movie, giving the Mother way too much of credit of empathy, and a nurturing view. Whereas, I view the opposite of her mother, lacking a natural, nurturing, unselfish environment for her child. Instead, Ella's upbringing is replaced with a toxic environment, full of obsessive compulsive behavior of perfection, largely stemming from her mothers ONE & ONLY soul pursuit of perfection of her work. This is very much shown at the beginning of the movie, as her mother is almost on her deathbed, but instead of using this precious time to create a heartfelt relationship with her daughter, so that she is left with atleast a mere memory of a "loving mother", once she is long and gone. Instead, her mother selfishly uses her last days on his earth to use her daughter as a tool, rather than a living human being. Ella, only seeing her mother as a perfectionist her whole life(even until her dying breath), has created a sinister victim own in being. Making it where Ella only feels accepted or validated through her work, rather than just being good enough by simply being her daughter. Another example her mothers emotional neglect, is shown right before her mother had a stroke. Ella's mother noticed her daughter was very tired, but there was not even a inch of concern or empathy of her daughter's mental or physical state, instead she gaslighted her. She insulted Ella, by bluntly saying the least she could do is help her finish her animation (the same work that she has prioritized her daughters entire life) once again, dismissing Ella's feelings or opinions. In a similar manner, her mother's final act of "selfishness" of having a stroke, which lead to a coma, leaves Ella in a endless unfulfilled mindset, of knowing she will never be able to live up to her mothers expectations or a final validation. Subsequently, leaving a void of emotional frustrations and unanswered questions, that she will never get, this only worsens the childhood trauma of neglect and unrealistic perfection that her mother has left behind. Due to this toxic cycle and baggage, Ella has no other option but to spiral into self-loathing and self-abuse, because she believes that is all she was worthy of. This has caused detrimental effects of low self-esteem and a inferiority complex, thus continuing to decay Ellas mind and reality. It is inferred that her childhood was filled with criticism, judgement, and lack of empathy from her mother. Being raised by a narcissistic parent, created a form of sociopathic behavior displayed in Ella, as an an adult. This is why she is able to further and further dissociate from reality and humans ethics. Therefore, creating a blur of right and wrong, going beyond dangerous boundaries to achieve her goals at what ever cost. Even if the cost is death and murder, she has no remorse for others, such as her boyfriend or peers. She just uses them as tools for her creations in her twisted reality. In summary, Ella represents nothing but a over-worked "tool/puppet" that had no place to go, and once her mother passed away, this just further cracked her already fragile underdevelopment mind(egg, which was the symbol in this movie). Her mother's selfish-obsessive/narcissistic constant display of aspirations of her work created this monster within Ella. Side note: I also wanted to point out, that it seemed that her Mothers obsession with her work seems to created a household that lacked a wholesome family environment. There was no mention of Ellas father(from my understanding), this is also another sign that her mother prioritized her work more than family. How come no one else visited Ellas mom in the hospital? Did she even have a love life or friends outside of work?, or was her whole life centered around her work. The reason I believe this theory, is because as you see throughout the movie Ella is very cold and dismissive, of even her own relationship with her boyfriend. He has constantly displayed acts of love/affection and attends to her needs, but once again "Ella selfishly prioritizes her work/animation" over her own love-life, not being able to see it is slowly destroying her relationship.....
Stopmotion animation is a special kind of madness, a willingness to accept that a single slip of the hand can destroy everything. Given the rich history of stopmotion animation in horror movies I'm surprised there aren't more animators as characters.
I'd love a psychological horror about the stress that can come with being an animator. The closest thing I can think of is an episode of Paranoia Agent where this studio is trying to create an anime under a tight schedule, only for one of the staff members to constantly screw things up, leading to everyone becoming more and more unhinged as the episode goes on.
@@JG-pt3xe Since a lot of animation is done by small teams, in tight quarters, under heavy physical and mental pressure, it seems the sort of thing that would give itself to psychological horror.
There are also a lot of interesting mental/physical side-effects of working too long on animation without a break. When I was finishing my college thesis I remember having bouts where I would see the world moving in "key-frames" or peoples' mouths would seem to be out of sync with their words. I would also find myself tracing the movement lines of people's bodies as they walked past me on the street. Don't forget to take breaks kids!
@@brushdogart I love animation and dream of working in the industry one day, but true. A lot of people seem to underestimate just how stressful it can be. Just look at Evangelion's production.
@@JG-pt3xeReminds me where a detective goes to a crime scene and has to interview everyone in the manor but everyone is such a head ache like the mom saying:
"First of all,I want you to know that I am a mother. And as a mother is to her children,I am to them." Or the son just saying:"Doctors say my brain age is 7."
@@JG-pt3xein fact I think the dad (The person who was murdered) just killed himself since he has to talk to his family who speaks like that.
It's important to understand just how abuse comes in different forms. Her mom was not only emotionally unavailable but emotionally demeaning. The trauma from emotional abuse is just as detrimental as physical.
If you're weak minded
@@OctavianAsix has nothing to do with being "weak minded" most people don't realize they're being abused mentally or emotionally to be "strong minded" about it. Abuse is like water, it seaps into anything it touches.
@@soleilbinx8834 nah, you're just weak minded if words can hurt you
Most have weak minds tho, so I can see how you cane to think the way you do
That and you're a woman
Nah I’m sorry. Your mom being emotionally unavailable or demeaning is not the same as your grandpa sexually assaulting you or your dad beating you and your mom when he drinks
From Gravity Falls
"You really believe someone really move these figures one frame at a time? I'm not a masochist! I use black magic to make them animate themselves".
such a good show, so many quotables
LMAO
I too would use black magic if i was forced to make stop motion
The director is Robert Morgan, he has a CZcams channel and I have been watching him for a years, his art is so interesting, his old art is shown on the movie and I instantly knew from the beginning of the movie it was him, definitely recommend checking him out if you don’t have a weak stomach.
Omg I’ve watching him for years too; never realized that it was him directing it. No wonder I was intrigued from the stop motion itself
When I saw the stop motion scenes, I was like, “this reminds me of ‘Bobby Yeah’” and yep same guy! So cool!
Thank you! I will! Edit; just subscribed 😊
I recognized it right away! Awesome!
Thank you for the info! I went and checked out his page and I could instantly see how similar the look was. I subscribed so thanks again I love getting good recommendations 😊
From a creatives perspective I love how it shows how getting consumed by your work can be bad for you. I frequently forget to eat or sleep if I’m absorbed in something, and that alone can make a lot of my creativity affected.
Being an ADHD adult, hyperfocus means we get consumptively enthralled by our varied fixation or hobbies and will at times lose multiple days forgetting food and water and various aspects of hygiene in the fixation. Not saying this is your experience just sharing as a creative with a disorder I recognize this feeling of lost days and weeks for time spent in my creations. Even if nobody ever interacts with them or perceive them in any real detail...
@@forgesoulfire1320 oh yeah, I’m on the spectrum and have ADHD, I’m all to familiar with perseverating! 😱
They say my wife's family has some type of ADHD and when she gets hooked on a good game like Subnautica or something similar, she'll play all night and say she lost track of time. It's pretty mind-blowing
@@sheldonjplanktonn yep, sounds about right. I don’t know how to describe it but our minds can literally get so enthralled with what we’re doing we don’t process anything else. Like imagine you can’t really hear a crowd cheering when you’re playing a game, right? You’re just focusing on what’s important and your body tunes out the rest.
Definitely! Especially when using crap as a medium. It can be so all-consuming when painting with.
Using Ella's darkness as a jumping off point, and based off art as a creative outlet to express trauma, I theorize that the Ash Man in Ella's story is someone that abused/molested her in her childhood. The whole story she's telling is a repressed trauma surfacing now that her domineering mother can't control her actions/thoughts. Think about how she fears the Ash Man touching her & putting something inside her. When children are abused, they often use a doll as a proxy to show how/where they were abused on their body. I mean, what do I know? But that's just my two cents. I'd love to see who agrees, or any other theories as to what this whole story represents.
I immediately knew that was her on the staircase because of how the little girl stood in front of her. Only a person who would hold someone’s nose when they sleep would do something like that. Same with dropping the juice box and then the recorder. I couldn’t ignore the similarity between those gestures.
I mean, Ash Man is clearly the part of her mind that is not happy with the way she is heading, right? That is why it snapping was so "unexpected" - it was the part of herself that was disgusted with what she became, the part that was ugly but had to be accepted, the part that gave her the chance (the egg) but she rejected it, and so her end is death. It was meant to be not because of fate, but because her actions brought upon these consequences.

FoundFlix: " *YES* "
They finally did it. They made an actual horror movie about stop motion……. There have been so many Stop motion, movies that I have played with the concept of horror, but not a straight up horror movie until now………..
Mad God is a good stop motion horror film
…Tell me more of this “Mad God”….
Mad God was a passion project by Phil Tippet (The guy that made a bunch of stop motion for Starwars and many other projects) it took him close to 30 years for him to complete the project after he took several breaks from it. It’s very unique and has many interpretations, but the basic gist is that the movie depicts a world in which God has gone mad from humanities defiance of him, and basically made the world a living hell, with really creative and disturbing body horror, and a wordless journey through its depths, mostly done in stopmotion. I believe the streaming Service ‘Shudder’ has it.
@@wafflefriend2304 Thank you for telling me I’ll definitely watch it
This film thematically echoes Harold Bloom's "The Anxiety of Influence".
According to Bloom, writers & poets are burdened with the understanding that, generally speaking, every story already has been told. This knowledge jostles against the artist's need to create.
"Stopmotion's" atmosphere of dread reminds me of "The Censor", a recent British horror movie.
Fascinating
That's also what I thought of watching this
holly crap I was just about to comment:
""Old woman, young woman, kid"
is this going to be another the start is the end movie?... yes, yes it is.
Adding a stop motion aspect to this old story doesn't make it original"
I mean I wouldn't pretend to be a bad person to make a point about bad people.
This movie is still bad because it's just so cliché, my point still stands, adding stop motion doesn't make it original.
We can't beat up our wives and lynch black people in a post man outfit to point out inequality.
This is why I don't pay for "art", I download everything, seed everything, the only digital thing that I've ever bought are programs/media that I truly believe changed my life.
I use Microsoft products all day every day, but somebody else can and will do it for free (linux), this movie is garbage the whole plot was obvious 1/4 through the movie, Sponge Bob The Movie, turning on a car with a spatula yeah that's unoriginal, david hasselhoff being a boat, and bob and patrick being reunited by a tear... that is a movie I'm willing to buy a DVD and Blueray of, store and share for ever.
As I stop motion animator myself sometimes, I can say is...stop motion is put into the heart and souls of true animators.
Happy Easter Foundflix! Been looking forward to seeing you do this one. ^^
babe wake up its time!
as someone who does stop motion, i know the struggle of creating new ideas and then putting time into it, then making the character models, point is. I can respect the accuracy of the film
I kept on trying to remember where I've seen the actress. She plays Lyanna Stark.
I was doing the same, so fucking annoyed bc i couldnt remember from where i knew her jajsjdjsj
She's the main lead in the movie "nightingale"

This sort of reminds me of Black swan a little bit
Now that you mention it I can see that too.
It's crazy, I was a combat medic in the Army(Iraq) and currently am an EMT/firefighter. I deal with gore all the time, but I watch foundflix so i dont have to endure jumpscares. Does that make sense? lol perks of PTSD.
That makes perfect sense to me. Thank you for your service by the way, although I’m so sorry you went through that.
Thank you
This is how media consumption is more complicated than most politics suggest. People can be completely fine with the most graphic (fictional) media but the relatively slightest real life trauma is hugely affecting because the mind recognizes that its for real this time. People can generally cope with extreme life events, careers, environments but when in the 'safety' of consuming media, the trauma finds room to trigger. Its how even if every adult plays violent video games regularly, the rate of violence in general might not go up (it may even decrease), but an already mentally compromised youth might incorporate certain ideas from a violent video game into their increasingly toxic worldview. We interact with other people in a more expected Monkey See Monkey Do (especially when pattern forming as a child) but media is arguably a whole other story, its more of an internal mirroring.
Horror film buffs are among the most peaceloving and kind people you'll meet, though perhaps strange, while Wholesome media uh... fans? Focusers? Activists? Whateve, people who want pure and wholesome media (in their eyes) are sometimes among the most creepy, concerning, controlling, maybe just rude people you'll meet.
I work in a hospital and definitely watch FoubdFlix to avoid jump scares and some gore lol
Yeah, you're traumatized.
I wish you would do an ending explained/break down of the CZcams short "Other Side Of The Box"! Its an absolutely awesome 15 minute horror short free on CZcams. I think it's by Alter but its definitely worth 15 minutes of anyone's time and fully deserves an epic FoundFlix Ending Explained!

Happy Easter man! You ALWAYS come through with movies I’m curious about ❤🎉🎉🎉
I appreciate you not just jumping on the brand new releases and reacting to them and explaining them like everyone else. One of the best channels on CZcams right here.
“When is the last time you saw a stop-motion advertisement of any kind, 1965?”
The California Raisins (‘80s and ‘90s), ABC’s “After These Messages” bumpers (early ‘90s), Lipton Brisk Iced Tea (late ‘90s-early ‘00s, revived in 2010).
My oldest kid was obsessed with Wallace and Gromit, the last movie they made was 2008
Robert Morgan is an amazing artist. The first one of his animation I saw was Deloused from the ABCs of death. His creations are just so viscerally greasy. Like his sets and characters have never showered, it gives some level of realism to the stories

Ugh the thumbnail scared me while i was half asleep scrolling on youtube.
Stopmotion in general has always been unsettling for me. I always think about the old Tool music videos and how disturbing they are. All in all, I expected more from this movie.
Oh god the old tool music videos were another level of weird
I immediately went to look up who produced the video for "Prison Sex", thinking that there was shared personnel with this movie.
Nope: Adam Jones did the stop-motion animation in Tool's music video.
Yea as a kid it would freak me out. But I did like gumpy lol. But the older I've got I kinda like stop motion.
For me it’s the Nightmare Before Christmas/Coraline/James & Giant Peach style animation. Absolutely HATE it, it freaks me out so much…

Man I never get tired watching FoundFlix after all these years. That movie collection he has behind him is so sick and nostalgic.
Yess this is one I was looking forward to!!
i thought ella was recalling a buried memory
of being assaulted as a child - possibly her alternate killing her tormentor. changing the story is an attempt to change what happened to her unfortunately it can't be changed. you hear her saying she doesn't have a voice and in the end losing her identity (face) and her evil alternate takes her place in life OR she dies...i tend to think her alternate because she is still alive when ella places herself in the trunk
Your channel is one I look forward to watching you are one of the best creators

One of the rare times I was having anxiety watching a spoopy movie XD
No one uses that dumb word: "spoopy" anymore.
It was stupid to begin with and I'm glad it died as soon as it began. It's sounds completely stupid. Spooky has always been good enough to describe scary. No stupid baby talk language is needed. "sPo0Py": sounds like something that a toddler would call diarrhea.

Weirded out. I saw a movie when I was about 7 that did that to me. Sometime tomorrow I'll remember the name. Weirded out is worse than scared
