In A Classic Horror Story, a group of strangers stumble into a living nightmare where a deadly cult hunts them down. However there is a meta twist that changes everything we thought we knew up to that point. We're breaking down the story, the odd backstory of the cult involving the Mafia, as as explaining the ending and what it means.

i did enjoy the meta jab of horror being dismissed as a genre with the dude just skimming through the movie and giving it a thumbs down, but everybody whipping their phone out during the beach scene felt so on the nose they may as well have worn joker make up
That one shot of the beachgoers with their phones looks like it's from a Coldplay music video. So bad.
They were the creepiest part of the movie.
Because they’re not supernatural beings we can project our own shitty behavior onto.
They’re us.
Nothing to do with cell phones. That’s just more projection.
We’ve behaved this way for centuries, enthusiastically watching people being tortured and slaughtered and burned.
Of course Viewers want to see real onscreen deaths. That's why Cannibal Holocaust is one of the highest rated horror films of all time.
@@glitterspray There is a well studied phenomena called the "bystander effect". Basically, the more people who are present, the less likely that any one of them will offer aid. If only one other person had been on that beach, they would probably have rushed to help her.
@@glitterspray Well, not all of us, but enough I guess.
Pennywise actually does feed on people, the fear just enhances the flavor.
In the book the equate it to salting your steaks, which basically is just a tenderizing technique. But yeah It does eat them
which is weird cause we were taught fear is the last thing you want your meat to feel cause adrenaline makes the muscles tense and thus the meat gets tougher, tasteless and go bad faster due to the high Ph
@@shini2007 Pennywise is a trans-dimensional bad guy/demon/thing. I don't think the texture of the meat is important.
@@TPund just because a person comes from the depths of hell doesn't mean they deserve bad quality of meat. Of course if they do like how fear tastes then that's the preference lol
Back to todash space with you
I love the meta horror idea, hell, Cabin in the Woods is one of my favorite movies!
But I was immediately sucked out of it once the 'technology bad' message showed up. It's almost never handled subtlety or with any nuance. It's nearly always "Ugh, technology is objectively bad, you guys! The world is blind, but not me! I can see! I'm deep! Pay me money to stream it on your phone and I'll show you!!"
Imagine someone illegally streaming you via cctv-IP without you knowing and profiting from the nonconsensual exploitation bc that's what's going on with me under 100 pseudonyms used to obfuscate the exploitation and prevent me from tracking down the videos. Not to mention deep fakes created with the illegal video footage to further create issues for me
You should watch a movie called "The Den" if you haven't it's a really great movie and not to spoil it but this movie actually stole the ending but this was was just complete fucking shit tbh and a disgrace to any horror movie even the worst ones like SyFy Originals lol.
@@jennpark8559 this is one of the craziest comments I’ve seen on this website
@John Little biggest fucking boomer take I’ve ever seen
Black Mirror does "technology is bad" really well. It's more like bad people use technology in terrible ways though.
The ending of the movie has the energy of "this says a lot about society, yet we live in one"
The whole “but phones bad” message doesn’t really seem to have anything to do with the rest of the movie, or with reality. When disasters happen people step up and help. Humans care about each other.
@@beefpelican didn't see the video yet but theres hella people that say people won't care about others, but even if they don't, they'll help, you need people to fonction a country
Am not sure if they just ripped off the ending or the ending was just an inspiration
Cause the ending was somehow similar to the "hacked webcam" horror movie "THE DEN"
@@beefpelican I love movies that say phones and technology are bad yet they've used so much technology to make the movie
@@Helixassassin The point has flown way over your head, it seems.
I've always hated the 'technology has desensitized us.' argument. fake violence and real violence are so insanely different on every level, if you can't separate the two then I feel like that's a lack of a moral compass rather than being desensitized via media.
This
The moral compass is skewed because of media violence. I'm pretty sure that's what they were getting at. That's always been my take away. Doesnt make it any less bogus, but all the same.
Not really. You have people who get upset over dog deaths in movies and video games. That appears to be one last taboo for western/white audiences.
Agreed. Considering children used to be taken to public hangings just for fun I would say, if anything, that technology has nothing to do with desensitisation
@@scart8571 Lets not act like that was widespread. Very, very few children would ever see an execution. A bit like treating a child trafficking victim as the average child today. They're the exception, not the rule.
Seeing all the cars of past persons kidnapped reminds me of Wrong Turn
Yes! And also In the Tall Grass
Exactly to both of your comments!
Also "the hills have eyes"
and also blair witch project when they go a particular direction and still wind up at the same place (the house) as if they circled back to starting point. i think that was the intention of the movie to show how bad and cliche fab's movie is haha
Bro this entire movie reminds me of wrong turn
I honestly preferred it as the group is being hunted by demons resembling hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil.
I got so pissed by the end, especially when she's going off into the water.
It's like she went to drown herself and didn't try to tell anyone what happened.
I was so angry.
I didnt think she was going to drown herself but that interpretation makes more sense to me. I thought she was going to wash herself off lol
@@completlynormalhypernova666 I dont think she was trying to drown either. She is given a stigmata earlier in the film, and we never see the father of the baby, and she decides to keep the baby. I think the ending represents a baptism for a mother Mary parallel
@@completlynormalhypernova666 0
I figured she saw all those families and wanted to clean herself before they came to help.
That was just my first thought, she saw no one trying to help and instead of calling for help she just....goes to drown herself...and to me it was a cooler movie with the demon aspect.
the ending with people just filming her and doing nothing felt so boomer to me, I couldn't even take it seriously
bOoMeR
The whole 'new technology bad makes ppl worse' concept is such an overused boring trope typical of boomers
Nha, it's actually pretty realistic. People would do that, expecting others to call. The only way to ger someone to act is making them panic
@@riccardocanziani2497 No it's not. I certainly wouldn't, and I hope no one here would either. There is such a thing as the bystander effect, but it has nothing to do with phones (people would ignore those who needed help long before phones) and not every person would realistically allow themselves to fall to it. Not only is it a horribly predictable scene, it's also completely lacking in originality, practically pulled from the pages of a political cartoon, and just plain stupid. Having even one person at least *look* concerned could have done away with the unintentional comedy factor but the director just *had* to make a "statement" I guess
@@the13throse Not to mention that The Bystander Effect has actually been proven to not be as strong or accurate as people think it is. Obviously a large majority of people will be stunned but to say that everyone won't do anything is wrong
Do the movie Pyewacket please. I’ve been suggesting this movie for at least 3 years. I’ve waited too long to just give up now
Good one!
Ask him to play Fortnite
This sounds kind of dumb, but I always forget what the title of Pyewacket is and I end up calling it Peedewacker.
I've been meaning to watch that movie I've had it downloaded for like A year and a half. Worried it's gonna suck lol
Aight I can get behind your noble cause! I will ask him as well!
The “everyone is so buried in their phones they’re desensitized” message is so tired already 🤦🏾♂️
and it's not even true
Except it continues to be true so...
@@IceQueen975 You're right but kids watching this are getting triggered because it reminds them of their parents telling them to get off their phones.
@@EnclosedPoolArea Yeah why can't people entertain themselves like they did in the good old days by going to a nice wholesome public lynching?
This whole movie was tired
Whilst I still liked the movie overall, I was disappointed by the meta-twist in towards the end. I liked the culty, somewhat lovecraftian thing they had going for them with the three brothers and their designs, so it was quite a let-down when the revealed the cameras.
I felt the same way. What's scary about the mafia? You can just shoot or stab them lol
Couldn’t agree more. It was cool up to that point. Then I was like ugh this is stupid.
Maybe watch Midsommar
@@colinconsidine5209 felt the same man just threw everything out for me.
Still isn't really any explanation for how they walked through the woods in a single direction and ended up back at the cabin.
Well in IT chapter 2 it did take a big chunk out of that one guy so he definitely eats something besides fear.
thats just because the vibe was right
The meat had been tenderized really well.
imagine the spike in fear when a supernatural clown bites your arm off. its just tactics lol
@@thechemtrailkid
No IT eats meat but fear just seasons the meat.
It is also a common trope with women walking straight into the ocean at the end of a story within literature and media. It represents breaking away from society, either from cleansing themselves in the water or by giving up and coming to terms with never being able to have autonomy in this society by killing themselves. a great example of this is the ending of The Awakening.
Or Ophelia...
I thought it was that Pennywise did eat people; fear was likened to "salting the meat" and he specifically targeted children because their fears were simple to play on compared to the more abstract fears one develops as you age.
You could make a video explaining every minute of a movie in detail and I would still watch it, something about the way you edit videos and the way you tell stories is super entertaining
You mean like those movies explained CZcams series where they don’t directly state the movie title (just a description of the plot as the title). Then make up odd ways of discerning scenes in the movie like “they decide to have hormone time” or “handsome and beautiful decide to go on a date”.
@@medicwheat69 no, I don't know if I've ever seen a video like that

Am I the only one who feels like the cult's visuals are straight up copies of Midsommar? Right down to the random deformed kid.
It does make sense tho, considering that the antagonist is a horror-movie director wannabe.
Was there a “deformed” (DISABLED) kid in Midsommar?
I missed that. And disappointed. As I was in this film going there for cheap shock value.
Tired of filmmakers using the disabled as tropes for creepiness.
Especially the trope that people with DID have a sociopathic serial killer personality when they’re far more likely to be victims than to victimize.
@@glitterspray If I remember correctly there were no disabled person in Midsommar, only in Hereditary.
@@lucascamerino6354 Oh, sadly, there was. Ruben, the deliberately inbred prophet kid who was in all the trailers despite being in the film for like less than a minute.
@@Perinlyn Oh yeah, it was pointed out that he was from inbreeding tho. and it wasn't as harsh as hereditary that made it look like deformed ppl are horrifying or smth.
Wasn't a big fan of this movie after the twist was revealed wish they would have kept it as the initially explanation of the demons/cult and not the direction it went in.
Yeah I felt the same. The atmosphere that the movie created was so good and I was completely immersed in the demon cult thing, then it was revealed that it was just some psycho trying to make a movie. Some people might like it, even I would have liked it but just not this time because I wanted it to be a demon.
@@user-sc9mz2du2e I highly doubt demons would be using tools like that lol that was the biggest giveaway that they were just wearing masks
this is the type of "first year film student" level of pretentious film making i sort of cringe at whenever i watch it.
Exactly what I would say. Cinematically it's not "Bad" it's just cringe and super surface level, when they think it's actually deep for some reason. Just not a great experience.
I just watched it tonight, and kept track of how well it held up. Fabrizio steered the RV into a tree, purposefully, to "avoid" the planted dead animal. They wound up right near the cabin he intended them to stay in. Fabrizio was the one who led Ricardo to the creepy Wicker Man-type hangings in the woods. Fabrizio purposefully lied about the direction the were going, making them go in circles and stay away from the beach. I liked this. Went into it completely blind on plot or synopsis, let alone watching a trailer. I feel this movie benefitted from not knowing anything about it before watching it.
Ah yes, just in time to watch at work.

Pennywise doesn't feed on fear. He feeds on the children. The fear makes them taste better. You wouldn't say you feed on salt, you say you feed on in the steak, and the salt makes it taste better..

He feeds on people in general. Kids are just easier to scare. He's eaten adults in a pinch

For Pennywise. The Children are the Salt. Not the fear and negative emotions. Kids just tend to provide more of what he's after without the typical emotional control that adults are supposed to possess.
NGL, I laughed when Alisa shot Kiara and Fab.

Malignant is really shitty tbh
I think the stigmata, the fact she is baptized at the end, and that she decides not to get an abortion imply some kind of mother Mary parallel
This gives Midsomar tease . Very similar themes, cult-like, and horror tropes .

Especially when foundflix mentions that the cult mimicked her crying at the table
Yass!! The Italian midsommar-sort of
It is riffing on other horror so it makes sense
God, I had so many expectations from this movie. I loved the cultish and lovecrafitian theme they had going with the three brothers' tale. That mafia and it actually being a film set ruined the entire good atmosphere they had from the beginning. I wanted it to be something like all of them find a way to destroy the brothers or something only to unleash an even worse nightmarish creature. Or something! Like a culttttttt. Ugh
This movie's whole message is... Asinine. Yes, as a culture we (generally speaking) are desensitized to death, and pain. In media. I guarantee you that a person who consumes horror/action movies, games, and other alternative entertainment will piss themselves if a real murder was done in front of them.
As for that girl as sea, people wouldn't just record, at least, not a majority. Give humans more credit then that, the message was alright, but very poorly done.
Yes, the bystander effect is a thing, but that isn't all people.
And it's so incredibly dumb. They're demonizing the entirety of modern tech and then in the same breath promote their shit movies on whatever streaming site pays enough.
Sorry but look at the kitty Genevieve case...or just look at this pandemic. People are absolute monsters to one another. Having too much faith and hope in people is a mistake. Who would’ve thought our pandemic would turn out just like movies say from how it spread to the misinformation Etc... even though we’ve always said people would never be like that.
@@IGot7RevtinyArmyStayOnceBlink Faith? Hope? Humanity destroyed those in me a bit again. All I'm saying is, while there are people who would just watch, that isn't everyone.
There are bad people out there. But there are also a small fragment of good people too.
@@shad03void99 I see your point and I do agree to an extent. Sorry for my pessimism, just hard for me to watch everyone say people aren’t like that when it’s observed all the time, especially this yr. But true not everyone is like that.
@@shad03void99 Saying not everyone is bad doesn’t help or accomplish anything. Even if not all are the type to bring out their phones, the entire point is a lot of them are and the message brings awareness to that. And plus, the scenario on the beach is entirely possible because even if not everyone would bring their phones out, that specific beach could be filled with everyone who r bad. It truly wouldn’t surprise me…especially when I’ve seen cases where entire neighborhoods were bad.

i took a ton of screenshots during the movie and cropped them into swatches. every frame is so artful. visually, it was such a joy to watch.
Actually the ending reminds me of an incident in the hospital lab where my sis worked. Her coworker lost consciousness and hit her head at the sharp edge of the machine. She was bleeding everywhere, and only my sister rushed in to help her to the ER. All of her other coworkers just went about their business, not caring.
Oh my gosh 😞 I saw a video on tiktok recently of a kid who fell down in a gym class having some heart problem and all his classmates just ignored him, shocking
I can't tell if the above is deep satire or not. But this is exactly why these movies 'message' means nothing. So the kids did that, so what? So the coworkers did, so what? What does it say about us, what does the message from this movie say about us? Nothing, it's just for bored housewives to respond to with 'shocking'. Shitty ppl are out there, have been since the dawn of mankind. Pointing it out in movie or in real life is almost as tired and meaningless as filming a plastic bag in the wind and declaring it the height of art.
Saying Pennywise feeds on the fear is like saying you feed on the seasoning from the steak. The fear just enhances the flavor for pennywise, like seasoning on a steak.
It’s weird to me that an extraterrestrial, inter dimensional, godlike entity has to feed on little kids. That’s like a human eating dust mites

The whole “ugh society consumed by their phones! Technology bad!” is such a lazy trope. Every film maker thinks they’re making such a huge subversive statement when they tack it onto their movies. 🙄
Not as lazy as the trope of perennially online, phone addicts getting upset at any movie critiquing any aspect of technology dependence.
Same, I’m not against criticism of how this generation is dependent technology, l mean my favorite musical is Octet, which is literally about a group of internet addicts at a support group, but so many directors are so lazy about it and just do it to make themselves look deep.

Hey been loving these past videos. Just wanted to ask do you have any other movie interest besides horror ?
The best "Your phones are desensitizing you to people in distress right in front of you" message was in _Black Mirror's_ "White Bear."
Unfortunately, it's since become so much of a trope that we're almost calloused to the callousness of people merely watching the distress of others. The worst example of this in recent memory now sounds like a overdone movie premise: a woman in Philadelphia was raped on the subway while ten witnesses filmed, but did not intervene.

Actually I'd love to know your take on a few Older films too. I like watching stuff from the forties and fifties when I can get my hands on it. Like murders in the zoo or the old dark house. Both are awesome
I really enjoy your videos. I've been watching for a while and love to listen to you describe movies I've already seen while I'm working or to see if a movie is worth my time or not. I'm a tough sell on films nowadays and you are thorough enough but also don't talk it to death so I will still be able to enjoy a watch through myself if it's a good flick. Thanks for all you do.
I like to alternate between you and Oliver Harper's retrospectives, I wonder if you know that channel? Logan's run is a perfect one to start off with. OH gives a bit more context around the films developments but that also means his vids can be very long and require more focus to enjoy sometimes.
did something happen to the most recent upload for this channel? was going to watch but I can't find it anymore
I really enjoy watching these videos because I'm not a fan of watching horror movies, but I really want to know the story. Thank you.
