      I always thought that it was a stand in for a teenagers fantasies of a mature figure showing you the "forbidden delights" of adulthood. With an extra touch of more forbidden. (A lot of places and families are still a bit homophobic.) Which is why it's so popular amongst young girls. (Which sex and sexuality is still more restrictive than boys.) I say this as someone who was a teenage girl. Though as an adult it is definitely something that would set alarm bells in my head...

    • @Black.Spades
      @Black.Spades Před 3 lety +376

      @@Animefreakess The "yaoi" trope in Japan with an adult man and teenage boy is more read by adult men. The female audience does read shounen ai or yaoi, but in their case it would more often be between two bishounen who can be very young, or young. A major point is the appearance of the protagonists.
      (since I keep getting responses to this: I made a distinction between men and women. Yaoi is for women, hence I didn't use quotation marks. For men the genre is called differently, so I used the word "yaoi". Japanese BL in general is wrongfully called yaoi, even some sites with the material put both male and female genres in the yaoi category. If I use bara or gei komi, many people will not understand what I'm talking about. I apologise if I made it confusing and perhaps offended someone.)
      I don't say the majority of "yaoi" readers is men. On the contrary, BL always had a huge female Japanese audience. What I'm saying is that the yaoi intended for female audience is written differently than "yaoi" intended for (adult) male readers.

    This literally explains why it's so common to see crossdressers or effeminate men in anime!! It's not necessarily because they're all trans (some are) like some people think, but that they're emulating this. The character Ritsu Sohma is stunted in his life and he feels comfortable wearing womens clothing. It's when he grows up mentally and becomes confident that he begins to wear men's clothing and has a relationship with a woman. Almost like a similar coming of age that is connected to the clothing!

      The Rome and Greece thing is somewhat of a historical misinterpretation. Unlike with wakashu, where attraction and sex acts were explicitly detailed in writing, no such thing exists in Greek literature. The relationship between adult men and young boys was closer to that of master and student and held an element of affection closer to that of a father or older brother. To my knowledge such sex acts were heavily frowned upon, either between adults or adults and minors.
      This is supported by the prevalence of heavy homophobia present in much of Greek writing and law (Homosexuality was punishable by death in Athens). A lot of the “top” and “bottom” power dynamic is a historical distortion by some notable modern historians in an attempt to legitimize homosexual relations by citing historical examples. Or in this case creating them

So if people were that careless in the 90s I imagine people from the Edo era didn't give a single shit.

I also wonder if things like this and what the Greco-Roman people did could be a Mt least partially why people (wrongfully) associate homosexuality with pedophilia. I'm not saying it's the only reason, that's a broader concept, but it seems people made the association for more than just because of the Bible's misttanslation & Christian campaigns to change the word that meant "pedophile" into "homosexual".

It's your knowledge of your own sin that is making you feel vulnerable in the eyes of God, not Christians. It's the unfinished business of your sin that nags at you and makes you feel out of place around Christians; where they live without worry you are plagued by it, where they live in joy and trust and peace you live in fear and doubt and mental unrest.
      The evidence of a life with Jesus and a life without Jesus speaks for itself, the joy and love and prosperity with vs the mental anguish and suffering without. Deny it if you want, make excuses for it if you can, but everyone can still see it, and I know deep down you can too. You KNOW why you suffer and you know what you can do to stop it but you still can't bring yourself to do it. You can lie and try to sully his name all you want to hide from His judgement and pretend He can't see you, but God will continue saving countless lives through the sacrifice of His son Jesus whether you want that to be true or not. He will continue to make this world better while those who reject His salvation will continue to suffer deeply.
      I say this with genuine care for the lost child of God that you are, either repent and find Jesus for yourself and live a higher life, or continue to cope and seethe and gnash your teeth and be lost and depressed and blown by every wayward wind feeling without purpose, the choice is yours. I know you have it in you to make the right one, I know you can do it, if God could still save and forgive me who hated Him so much and lived in such defiance of Him for a time, He can and will absolutely save you too. I pray you'll make it there!

    There is a manga called "Momo to Manji" by (Sakura Sawa) which is one of my favourites. I personally think the art style is phenomenal but it might not be for everyone. The hairstyles, fashion and lifestyles are on point. But because it is set in this kind of period and tradition, it is very disturbing to read about Momo was prostituted at very young age (insect warning as well). The Seme, Manji was also struggling with his sexuality and frustrated with his desire to make love to MEN *won't spoil it for u* but he couldn't because he is younger ( younger ones had to be the Uke). However, the relationship between Momo and Manji is very wholesome and cute. The mangaka had done a very good job on various research and it shows since it's very informative. Highly recommended if you are open minded and appreciate the characters' development 👏💕

      Personally I don’t mind masculine features on women. A lot of non mlm don’t mind those features but they can’t think of those things in a sexual way, it feels strange for men who like feminine features to see manly features in that way. Femininity is a lot easier to take on because lots of guys who like women like the feeling of being the dominating one (this is why pretty men were easier to accept in the past; they were more submissive and looked like women)

    • @jalenhart7651
      @jalenhart7651 Před 3 lety +21

      Oh also something interesting. I think it’s easier for women to be like “wow she’s so hot I’d let her get it”. It’s a little bit because of performance bisexuality. Society says it’s ok if straight women mess around especially if it’s for a man. Whereas men are told to bully any man who does this. Society has told us that anybody can admire women but if men admire men you’re disgusting (it’s starting to change)

    i actually read a historical edo period (with actual edo period fashion and hairstyles) bl manga a while ago called momo to manji that kind of explored this dynamic (which very closely mirrors greek pederasty) by having one of the leads be a former kagema, which is a male adolescent prostitute that grew out of kabuki culture after female actresses were banned (just like female actors were banned during Shakespeare's time due to their immense popularity as prostitutes). It was an interesting read bc it explored the idea of having to grow up when your monetary value and sexual availability was tied to being a teenager. Also the other male lead struggles with being a young gay man whose sexual preferences in bed don't align with the norms of generally accepted homosexual activity in the period bc he doesn't want to be sexually submissive to older men. The manga also explores how the main couples relationship runs counter to norms by being monogamous, between two adults, and long term, and neither of them pursue relationships with woman for monetary/status gain, though other characters do. A real standout among japanese historical manga of every genre, and a fascinating read, though certainly not for everyone for various reasons.

    This has carried over into modern times almost 1:1. In many Yaoi/BL, the Uke is the younger one hating the sex and doing it more for emotional satisfaction than physical one, and is often the more unskilled one, while the Seme is the older one who usually sticks it in and who has a position of authority or power (of course, there are some exceptions to this). Which gives off pretty homophobic vibes, all things considered.
