      As well, it’s a profession that fits pretty well for gay men. If the society at large is unwelcoming to homosexuality, there still needs to be an outlet for homosexuality. I would guess this is where families would encourage gay men to go if they aren’t going to deny themselves, or if the parents are particularly loving and want the young man to have a “happy” (as happy as it could be) life.

    I actually had several Korean male acquaintances in my life that told me that same point of view still exists today in Korea. They said that a lot of young guys in their 20s fool around and have sex with their male friends (both participants are of the same age, not older-younger like in this video) but then after completing their military service (which every man is required to do by the time he's 30 years of age), they are expected to come home and "settle down" with a woman and have a family. It was quite a big shock to me because then I asked "doesn't that mean they're just gay and getting married to women because being gay is not acceptable in their society?" but they said that it's not seen as being gay, it's just letting off steam and getting sexual pleasure with other men while you're young whereas having a real romantic relationships with men is frowned upon. And especially after the man grows up (after 30) it's seen as really weird if you're still attracted or wanting sex with other men instead of women.

      Yeah, before the Meiji Period, they didn't shame any sex act like the West did. Sexual pleasure was seen as good. Laws were more concerned with social stability than particular sex acts.
      e.g. adultery was illegal because of the conflict it created within the household rather than because sleeping with someone other than your spouse was inherently bad.
      Laws were also not that concerned with male-male sex, because there was no risk of pregnancies interfering with inheritance rights.

      @Mara_1337 Před 3 lety +94

      Is there a lot of actual BDSM, tho? like, safe, sane and consentual BDSM? not so much.
      Also, I don't think many tropes in the yaoi genre stem from shudo. I read that yaoi started off as kinda a parody almost of straight romance stories. Because female mangaka got tired of the way the relationships were portrayed in romance and especially the girls. So they were like "let me make that a boy instead and have you see how ridiculous this behaviour is". Hence all the crying and bishie looks and "helplessness" of the uke and all that forced upon sex that the uke magically likes in the end after all (and the unrealistic portraying of gay sex. just referring to the famous uke gland...). Basically they made a switcheroo with the toxic relationships by making the girl a boy. It was more like a statement. and hence also why it started off by female artists, rather than gay male artists.
      anyway, since it turns out women like gay romances (and sex^^), just like guys are into lesbian action, it has long since turned into pron targeted at women. And imo, as such, it has outgrown the old tropes and I am so sick of those toxic relationships.......... anyway ^^

As I said, it was purposefully to be like shojou stories at first... There are some stories out there with more interesting dynamics but now that I think about it, they are probably mostly tragic. I personally do like melancholy though. But yeah, especially in the manga range you might find good depictions of cute couples. I personally like Yamamoto Kotetsuko, eg. Been a while since I've read them. I love 10 Dance... Given... Even Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai...
      Well, this is not about recs, it's just that the tropey, denying tsundere uke is almost always a thing. It's cute to some extend and a posessive or pushy seme can be hot, but raping first and asking about feelings later (and pretending it's romantic) is stupid and is very much a thing in most of the bigger yaoi stories and it just doesn't sit right with me.

      I explained to her that Japan wasn’t messed up about sex due to religion like the US. Japanese kids aren’t taught that sex is dirty but it’s a natural part of life. Of course, sex with children is against the law but it’s not shameful for kids to see such magazines. The US talks about sex and religion but very few actually live by their religion when it comes to sex. Fake so-called morality in Western society. Japanese don’t put morals, shame or religion in sex, they just do it.

    This is a concept that needs to get more well known. It seems like many people are afraid to link homosexuality to the Samurai they look up to, but honestly the concept is much more complex than they realize. As you say towards the end of the video, it wasn't that many samurai were homosexual, it was more that their concept of sexuality was somewhat non existent/did not exist in the way we think of it today (or from a more western standpoint). I think the closest modern equivalent would be to say that many Samurai were bisexual or pansexual for that matter.

    • @Linfamy

    13:28 Even in the west, identification with your sexuality is a relatively new thing. Even when Christian norms beat out greco-roman male-male relationship norms, it was still something you did. The idea of sexuality as an identity was part of the gay rights movement as pushback against the criminalization of homosexuality.
    Also I find the Meiji government being so against same gender relationships and Wakashu interesting because usually the history goes "yeah this culture had a third gender and different sexuality norms and then they were colonized and it was forcibly taken away from them". The Japanese government chose to do that to look respectable to the west.

    • @yuuni9134

      Well Japanese more or less "colonized" themselves with the help of few foreign advisors. Im pretty sure if they refused to do it themselves the westerners would be good enough to quickly "civilise" them. For better or worse the Edo period peace and isolation led to outdated military force so they weren't as "scary" to the foreigners when they first met them few hundered years priror. It is sad to see Meiji starting heavy propaganda against the old ways and samurai culture using the emperor name, imposing forced haircutting and public shaming to deeply root western "civilised" norms in such extreme pace. They were pretty tough in their policies like the laws for modern farming adopted from the americans even lead to the exctinction of the Japanese wolf in just like 20 years despite the fact that the wolf was thought to protector of the farmers and crops for hundreds of years, kinda ironic.

In modern psychology, it is understood that human sexuality ie who we are attracted to is on a continuum and can and often does change throughout ones life. Gender identity is also ona continuum and change throughout ones life, though it tends to stabilize once we've reached adulthood (assuming you were able to explore gender identity and sexuality growing up as otherwise you may be like my aunt and have repressed that for nearly your entire life)

    • @Noelciaaa
      @Noelciaaa Před 3 lety +22

      somewhat makes sense. I also have read that many people of those who start out as bi become either gay or straight as they grow older. i'm not sure how true it actually as some of those cases of thinking someone was bi when they were younger might've been caused by this person being indoctrinated into feeling like they must feel opposite-sex attraction and perhaps mistaking simple feelings of friendship or idolization of someone cool that you see as a role model when you're young for that. it's kind of sad though that sometimes really dangerous homophobia has forced people to have to create and squeeze themselves into really strict definitions of sexuality to even hope to be seen as "valid" and sane... I myself am not bi but i keep meeting people who seem to not to fit any of those strict definitions, not to mention the wrench the concept of non-binary gender identities throw into the whole system! it seems somewhat silly we still put so much weight on those definitions, yet I can see this is for now a necessary evil if our rights are to be taken back, until equality can be reached.

    Man, japan and ancient greece had a lot more in common in practice than I would've thought at first glance when it comes to how they treated homosexual relationships! Also big BIG disclaimer. Even though these historical events shaped a lot of yaoi/bl tropes, calling the very real relationships and very real people whom participated on them 'old/feudal/medieval yaoi' is a HUGE no-no. Its very dehumanizing seeing real people's relationships being compared to a ficticious porn genre that only originated in the 1970s. Sure, doujin were made /based/ off these historical relationships and those would be yaoi on its own, but calling the real relationships that actually happened (and were often abussive) 'historical yaoi', it completely minimizes these very real experiences people had. You wouldn't call straight relationships in feudal japan 'historical hentai' would you? ...... don't answer that question.

You're quite proficient at your art/ craft/ science. VERY impressive! Respectfully Yours, Gregg Oreo Long Beach CA Etats Unis

    Loved the video man. Tbf though l was abit weirded out at the end. The quote "All good things have a happy ending and bad things too" when referring to the enforcement of straight relationships xD.
    I am very sure you did not mean it that way, but for a second l was like "You red pilling here?"

    I dont know what you are doing different from the other creators but your closed captions are always good. Even with hard to pronounce names your captions get them right. Thank you. I am hard of hearing and being able to watch a channel without having to figure out what you are saying.....its so refreshing. Plus Samurais *double win* so big thank you .

    I appreciate that you made this video very respectfully. In our current climate it is very easy to apply modern moral standards to a culture and period when they did not have access to the same info we do. As a result ancient peoples can become villanised in a way that isnt very fair to do. Thank you for not doing that!

    • @NotVincentCharbonneau
      @NotVincentCharbonneau Před 3 lety +33

      It wasn't like that as long as men dressed like a Wakashu they were considered Wakashu. Some Wakashu were as old as 90 years old. So if someone wanted to keep sleeping around with other men all you'd have to do is dress up like a Wakashu.

      Actually this type of system was incredibly normal around the world pre-Christian Europe practiced this and it seems homophobia seems to be unique to Abrahamic religions.

    • @TosiakiS
      @TosiakiS Před 3 lety +14

      @@kekero540 Homophobia is not unique to Abrahamic religions. Go to twitter and search up 同性婚 and you will see plenty of homophobia, ranging in opinions such as "they're pushing an agenda to destroy Japan" to "don't call it marriage" and all sorts of stuff.
      Actually, the more you look into it, the more surprising similarities you will find all around the world. For example, homophobia in medieval Europe did not originate from Christianity, instead Rome itself was already homophobic enough and only tolerated it in such heteronormative contexts like master-slave relationships, and Christianity ended this because they were against master-slave relationships.
      Homophobia as we know it today came about around the Victorian era with the invention of psychiatry that made homosexuality become seen as a disorder, whereas in the previous centuries of Europe, it was only seen as a possible transgression similar to adultery.

    There was a similar phenomenon among the ancient Greeks (the aristocracy) and in Afghanistan today, and probably many other cultures. I think it happens when you have a culture where access to women by young men (up to age 30) is very controlled, and you have a strong martial tradition that starts at around 12-ish, where teens and young men live a separate warrior life. You end up with a very macho warrior culture but where most men in their 20s are having sex (active role) with teen-age boys (passive role), but it's just a phase in their life, with the men marrying and being heterosexual after age 30. It makes me wonder about medieval European knights and their page boys.
