      Are there any features from pixel-based software you miss? What made you decide to make this transition? Do you think this would be a beneficial change for most artists, or only ones with specific needs?

    Ok this is just what I needed, I love streamlining my workflow, but blender is so massive that I wouldn't know where to start for a while, this is a great baseline! Thanks for making this, I'll need to study this and soon I'll have fun customizing my own shortcuts! (might come back to this with some questions but hopefully I can manage)

      @SophieJantak  Před 2 lety +1

      I hope it helps! Definitely my hope is that by sharing how to customize these shortcuts and all of these things, that people can choose what works for them :D if you have questions let me know!

    great to see another video from you. I've already canceled my PS subscription, but I still haven't quite hit on a workflow to be comfortable just casually opening blender to draw yet, so this video is pure gold. Many thanks

    19:57 you can actually just map camera to scale at x -1 so it will flip you view without taking you out of camera view specially helpful if you gonna use layered works. Scale y -1 if you want to flip it upside down.

    The overlays can be switched on/off using the z-key pie menu. I dont know if you need to activate the pie menu in the settings though.
    Edit: the pie menu is brought up by holding Z
    And circle select is far more useful to me than box select. Much more precise when selecting many verts/strokes, even compared to lasso select. But that's just my opinion I guess. Whatever works for you!
    I just say though, the opacity trick with the keyframes is so simple but I can see it being really effective!!

    • @SophieJantak
      @SophieJantak  Před 2 lety +1

    funny you said you've never used extrude in grease pencil. I was watching a Live SpeedPaint by Paul Caggegi via CG Cookie with grease pencil, the other day, and he even mentioned you as a sketcher who uses grease pencil. So while cleaning up his ink work he would constantly push/pull lines around and Extrude them also to help close up the gaps. Just an example of extrude use :D

    Hellooo! :) Great overview! I've been dabbling with grease pencil and using it more like a sort of traditional drawing tool too, much fun! But a different mindset for sure. :)
    A couple of things sprung to mind while watching that I figured I may as well share...
    7:35 The show overlays hotkey is already assigned to a shortcut : 'Shift Alt Z' :)
    16:00 May or may not be of interest but for the camera guides, maybe a solution could be to create some custom guidelines as a grease pencil object/layer instead and save that as part of the startup file? Not sure how it would be in practice but without scripting stuff that could have potential to help somewhere. :)

    • @SophieJantak
      @SophieJantak  Před 2 lety

      Thank you Aidy, and thanks for the tips! I can see having guidelines as a layer, but a disadvantage I'd see is that I don't think they'd be modified if I change my canvas size, whereas I think the camera's composition guides would? but also good to know about the shortcut, haha!

    I wish I could also just draw in blender for 2d animation, but I am too spoiled by Krita's multi touch gestures like zooming in and rotating canvas. I know you can just use keyboard shortcuts but that doesn't feel intuitive for me.

    Have you ever used Krita? I can't pull myself away from it, despite having several years of experience in Blender (doing 3d stuff). If I could get Blender to have the brush power of Krita, that would be amazing. I'll have to watch this after work!

    Hi Sophie! I would like to ask about the hardware you use. You use a Wacom Cintiq, right? I'm purchasing a drawing monitor (Huion Kamvas in my case). I was wondering are you able to rotate grease pencil canvas using finger gestures (or pen buttons) as you draw? I'm struggling with grease pencil workflow as I'd like to be able to draw directly on the screen and not have to use Wacom Intuous pro as it's really not that intuitive as drawing directly on the screen. Any tips on that matter? Thank you!

    Sophie, thank you for your videos. I have started using Blender for some 2D drawing. I have started having a problem though. When I am using different grey scale "colors" I am getting a strange yellowing in my drawings. Have you experienced this? I can't find anything on the internet about this problem but know you do a lot of 2d in Blender.

      @@SophieJantak Thanks for your reply. Sorry I did not see your reply earlier. I have noticed that anytime you increase the radius on the "soft pencil" brush you can see the yellow edges really well. I think that is what is making the yellow in my drawings.
