Nowadays, Pokemon travel on your journey to becoming the best there ever was has evolved. It used to be your feet and a bike. Now, you you can ride on Pokemon in your party as a travel option. Plus, there are built in game mechanics that are basically Pokemon taxi service. The Gala region has their Flying Taxi that utilize Corviknights to fly you from place to place. Well, that got me thinkin Theorists. Did Pokemon get flying RIGHT? Could a Corviknight, or any flying type, actually carry passengers or even THEMSELF? It's time to find out!

@@knuxuki1013 First time. He’s made videos about a lot of games I really didn’t care about as a kid or thought the theories were cool (most of the Zelda ones)
Since FLY was a move you had to unlock, being an HM move, then I just thought it gave your Pokémon a superpower move hence a small pidgey being able to carry my character. Ah the simplicity of just enjoying a game back in the day xD
It makes sense though. The whole point is that move types are the element the Pokemon taps into. Squirtle generates water from nowhere, Abra uses psychic powers, Makuhita has unreasonable strength compared to its size and weight, and Pidgey uses what's effectively air magic to create far more lift than what a mundane real-world bird could generate.
Turns out that guy in ruby/sapphire/emerald that was trying to use 6 wingulls to fly actually had the right idea of things.

Tinkaton: OH LOOK!!! FLYING STEEL!!!
Corviknight: FUUUU....!!!!

Corviknights are chased after by Tinkatons for their armor, which shut down the whole taxi service.
Therefore Paldea took the "many small" birds approach via Squawkabilly.

So lesson learned, the kid in Gen 2 up at the lake of rage who wanted to tie a bunch of flying pokemon together was actually onto something.
Big brain
Wait. There's a guy in Gen 2 who says this, too?
I know there is a guy in Gen 3 on route 119 who got this idea.
That kid is matpat confirmed
And that kid, grew up to be Harvey Weinstein! You can do ANYTHING, if you put your mind to it!
I think that is a reference to the little prince his main mode of transport in the book is a large amount of doves tied together this he uses to fly through the different asteroids where he talks to the many adults though in the tv show and movie he uses a plane
Matpat: "Birds wouldn't be able to support their own weight if they were any larger."
Pterosaurs: "Observe"
Also, Pokemon of almost all kinds are probably several times stronger than normal animals of similar shape and size, an that's without accounting for any superpowers. Just imagine the evolutionary pressure in that world, even humans would be insanely strong if they had to survive there long enough to develop Pokemon training skills. Also, they could have a thicker atmosphere because this is definitely not Earth, but then again the gravity might be stronger and would have to be calculated by observing someone or even a Pokemon of known mass jumping up and timing the fall from the top of the jump.
@@krzysztofczarnecki8238 thick atmosphere isn't like having thicker soup, it wouldn't really make it that much easier to fly. And having stronger gravity would in fact mean that these bird pokemon would need to be even smaller to be able to fly (stonger gravity means more pressure on bones meaning the bones would either have to be lighter or more dense, and if the bones get too big they'd essentially collapse under the weight). Aviation isn't as simple as "stonger animal means can fly" it's a whole lot of other factors that all work together in a complex balancing act to even achieve flight.
@@sorachitheeggo4440 less gravity then.
@@sorachitheeggo4440 Easy, pokemon are all bumblebees.
The biggest pterosaurs had tiny body and legs, with wings made out of pure skin, no feathers included.
They also had a single larger finger compared to the multiple in birds and bats.

Aerodactyle is based on Pteradons, who actually got pretty big. Unlike birds who use their legs to get off the ground, because they actually jump to get started, Pteradons are thought to have actually pushed themselves off the ground with their arms. Seeing as Quetzulquatlus is basically confirmed to have flown, and is the largest flying creature to have done so. Its tiny legs couldn't get it off the ground, but those arms could.

PFFFFFFFFTTT
“Aerodynamically, the bumble bee shouldn't be able to fly, but the bumble bee doesn't know it so it goes on flying anyway. ”
Except that's from a guy multiple centuries ago, and he was wrong. He thought that no bug could fly, because (since he didn't have access to high speed cameras at the time) he believed that bugs (and hummingbirds) flapped their wings up and down to fly, when, in reality, they move their wigs in a sideways eight pattern (also known as the infinity pattern), which makes flying easier and more maneuverable, with a higher mass limit than what's available by vertical flapping of the wings.
Damn im also always confused why bumblebees aren't the same as planes, since apparently if you use the formular of the carrying capacity a plane has, on a bumble you suddenly get the wrong answer ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I just realized that I put "wigs" instead of wings. I'm not going to change it. Because I find it hilarious.

It strikes me as odd that you specifically mention some Pkm potentially being able to control air, then dismiss the idea immediately.
In my mind, Flying-type has always been analogous with "Air-type." Other Pkm can control water, fire, earth, plants, and any number of other materials with little-to-no physically-derived abilities, so it stands to reason that Flying Pkm do something similar with air. I mean... there's a Flying-type move that literally makes a miniature hurricane strong enough to damage an opponent. That's something that you can only really do with either industrial equipment or an innate control over the air itself. Since Pidgey isn't carrying around any 2-ton fans, I'm inclined to say it's the latter of those two possibilities.
Assuming that's the case, the real problem becomes determining a given Pkm's ability to control the air around it. Since Flying-type moves use either Attack or Sp.Attack as their main stat, we can assume that these are somehow related to how powerful their control over air is, and therefor how much they can lift in flight. Based on the descriptions of moves and basic logic, it can be assumed that Attack is descriptive of a Pkm's physical strength, whereas Sp.Attack is indicative of their ability to control 'elements' (in this case, air).
Corviknight's base Attack and Sp.Attack are 87 and 53 respectively. Charizard's, meanwhile, are 84 and 109. Even if we're incredibly reductive and assume that 1 Attack point is equivilent to being able to lift 1kg of weight, Corviknight appears to be able to fly unaided (70kg < 87Atk) while Charizard only seems to need a little extra air-manipulation (90.5kg - 84Atk = only ~7kg).
Granted, this still leaves a few "Flying" Pkm unable to actually lift off. Gyarados, for example, has an Attack and Sp.Attack of 125 and 60 respectively, and a weight of 235kg (125 + 60 = 185, 185 < 235kg). But, then, Gyarados can't actually learn "Fly," so... checkmate..?

The square cube law would apply to any flying build, with it only going out the window for bugs. For instance, bee’s fly by moving their wings in a swimming motion, since at that size air essentially acts as a fluid, rather then a gas.
If we’re going by flying lizards, then we are looking at pterosaurs, the only time the lizard faction has taken to the sky’s properly. The largest flying lizard was the Quetzalcoatl, and its wings were massive in comparison to its body. By that alone, we can see that Charizard is grounded. It’s wings are pathetic for a creature that fat and large.
Something Mat hasn’t taken into account is that birds with large wingspans rarely flap their wings. They’re basically living gliders by that point.
Wingull (the seagull Pokemon) is a great example. Just look at its Wild Area animation.
@Deborah Ajao so you’re saying that birds with large wingspans glide, but they don’t because they don’t take off?
@Deborah Ajao It's not that his point doesn't still stand, it's just that he didn't mention that rather significant detail. Both the Bald Eagle AND the Great-horned Owl are Birds of Prey, and Birds of Prey are known for being gliders; the phrase "like condors circling above" exists for good reason. This is done to conserve energy, similar to how joggers pace themselves in marathons, rather than go full-sprint right out the starting gate. Energy efficiency is all about working smarter, not harder, after all. ;3
The detail that the larger the animal, the less often wings are flapped wasn't really relevant. It's a cool fact and it's kinda sad to not see it mentioned, but what ultimately mattered was carrying capacity.
Why everyone so smart :(
I wonder if there is more to flying pokemon and the physics in pokemon. Gust is an unusual move that pokemon can do, is there a real life comparison? Most HM moves are taught to the pokemon in order for them to do which they couldn't before. And levitation is definitely a think in the games and pokedex entries
CONGRATS FOR GETTING GEICO TO SPONSOR YOU MATPAT
Pidgeys got to carry almost 20x his own weight
ants: hold my breadcrumbs
czcams.com/video/JmQJ-xRNPvY/video.html....
this may be a joke, but.....
ants can only carry that mich because they are small
This is very funny
I like how Matt is just mocking us with the Petscop finale and Mass effect part 2 crossed out
czcams.com/video/JmQJ-xRNPvY/video.html..
But he hasn't crossed off Luigi's Bulge Pt. 2 or Nugget's Nuggets (maybe a food game theory crossover for Kindergarten) So we maybe getting those soon...
@@zomazoma4153 so why have two people now sent this video
(Both the links are just random unrelated videos for those wondering)
I feel like you need to revisit this now that Scarlet/Violet has come out and they have done taxi service for Paldea with multiple smaller birds. XD
Corvonite remindse me of that crow/raven from that paw patrol episode where Marshall shrincks in a dream just wanted tho menchen
I’ve never heard the words “this videos been sponsored by Geico” until today.
in one of matpat's sonic ones geico also sponsored him
@@samarjit_1246 Yeah, I think a couple of them
“According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way a bee should be able to fly. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The bee, of course flies anyway because bees don’t care what humans think is impossible.”
Didn’t have to scroll to far into the comments to find this
Love this comment since its funny which its from the Bee movie's opening of the movie.😂🤣😂🤣
I believe modern day physics was tailored in to fit the physical universe to replace the jumbled up old sciences which weren't perfectly understood but had known patterns and results before which costed alot more than just physical costs like currency but people just arent exposed to it for their own safety but also for thier own demise hereafter
-The bee movie
Wait a second when matpat listed the pokémons that can't fly Vullaby wasn't there and in its dex entries its really said it can't fly with tiny wing
Pterosaurs could achieve bodies which were bigger than modern flying birds because they, unlike birds, launched themselves into the air with their arms/wings, meaning that the musculature for the launch could also be used for flying (very efficient). Birds launch with their legs but fly with their arms/wings, which means that every extra bit of mass that their body acquires has to be countered by two different sets of muscles, which increase the mass further, and do so in an inefficient manner.
I find it both funny and terrifying that the editors had made just an image of an eagle flying away with Ollie.
Well, many...
The bee movie intro describes how the pokemon fly they dont care what humans think is impossible boom solved
That's kinda smart, fellow theorist :)
Dragonite and salamence operate on bee physics. Laws of aviation state these pokemon should’nt be able to fly, but still do.
My brain the whole time is how strong is their gravity? Wouldnt they need to know the gravitational force of the pokemon world? Wouldnt that change how much force the pokemon need to use?
I actually looked this up once...
Apparently the reason bees are able to fly is because they create miniature hurricanes under their body that lift them up. Many of the Pokémon he mentioned about not being able to fly learn the move Hurricane either naturally or can learn it via tr.
But I don’t think these Pokémon are moving their wings in the way bees do...
...But hey! Their magical creatures! Why don’t they just all fly via magic? It would explain how Corviknight is able to carry the taxi!
