Idle Air Control - Smooth Idle Tuning for Fox Body Mustang 5.0

- Idle Air Control is, in my opinion, the single most important part of getting your mustang to idle well. And it requires a combination of tuning, logging, and mechanical adjustments to your Mustang to get it right. And a tuner can't just ask what your combo of parts is and throw you a tune that has this dialed in. A mail order tune or WOT dyno tune will not get this dialed in. This is something you need to learn how to adjust on your own.
This video covers most aspects of what an idle air valve is, it's purpose, and a detailed explanation of the various parameters that you can adjust in the tune to make your car have a stable idle.
In this video I use the Binary Editor software combined with a Moates QuarterHorse to walk through the stock settings on the Fox Body A9L configuration, which is what you'd find in a 89-93 5.0 5-speed car.

Not sure why it's taken me so long to find your channel. This is solid gold for my tweecer!
Spectacular Series!! Wish you would have had these when I was tuning my car. Took a long time to learn all this by trial and error.
I definitely know what you mean. Took me a lot of hours of research and tinkering to figure this stuff out. But I have to give credit where it’s due. The information made available on efidynotuning.com is what got me started. Between that and veryuseful.com, I was able to get the basics under control. The rest was just from reading all the descriptions of everything in these strategies as provided by Clint and co. Glad you found these videos useful. Contact me any time if you need any help.
I have been messing with moates qh on my fox Mustang since August 2019. I have my car running almost perfect. I wish I discovered your channel sooner. You do a great job of explaining everything.
Robert, thanks so much. Means the world to me. If you ever think of a good topic for a video, let me know. Always looking for new ideas.
I have been having trouble dialing in idle air in closed loop with long tube headers. That would be a good topic for a future video. I know with long tubes the heat is less at the hego and it takes longer for the o2 to see a change.
Awesome
'90 A9L 👍
Where were you 25 yrs ago? LOL.
Yep, Im still doing Fox OBD1. 😁😎
Thanks so much for your well versed video. 🔔🔔🔔🔔
Lol. I was a child. Probably running around on a skateboard getting into trouble. Appreciate the kind words. Hit me up any time if you need any help or know anyone that does.
What's scary is that I actually understand what you're teaching LOL.
Einstein said that if you cant explain it simply in a a couple sentences, you don't know enough about it. He didn't have a FOX.
Matt, you're doing great!👍👍👍 Thanks.
I'm still here 2 yrs later. YeeeeHaaaaw!!
I have a 91 that ive done H/C/I I have everything proper for Fuel, Air, spark, timing but i'm having 2 problems. I'm having a hard time getting it to idle without surge. I'm also having a hard time with the car breaking up over 3,000 rpm. I've ordered this adapter and waiting for it to arrive. This sounds like it should solve my idling issue, could this also solve my high rpm break up as well?
I have a 95 Mustang GT and i have a question about the 2 holes for these IACs. One hole the IAC uses to add air. Is the other hole an air bypass to go around the IAC in case of failure? Can that second hole be used to fine tune the idle instead of messing with the throttle stop? This "air bypass" is adjustable on the OEM and aftermarket throttle body for the 95 mustang with the 5.0L. thanks
So can all these tuning videos you show be done with a sct or Diablo chip? Or only the moates can solve these tuning issues. Stalling, hanging idle, surging idle,
Moates Quarterhorse we need for live datalog capability but often times we can burn the finally tune onto an SCT chip that we encounter people will already have one sometimes.
Is this tubing software quarter horse?
So the software is a program called Binary Editor, which I use in conjunction with a Moates QuarterHorse chip that plugs in to the factory computer.
Hey. I’m 16 and have two of these cars. Long story. What is the best way to learn this type of stuff? Because I’m having issues and I’m really interested in learning all that I can about my cars.
Couple things. You need to familiarize yourself with the sensors on the car and all the parts and accessories of the engine. The vast majority of problems people have with these cars start there. It’s also good if you can find a local mustang or ford group on Facebook. Our local groups in Oklahoma are amazing. Lots of old school guys that really know these cars and are happy to help. Also, shoot me an email with your phone number and I can try to help troubleshoot any specific issues you are having. My email is TheLeech405@gmail.com
The Leech did my email with phone number ever get to you?
What can be done if the car immediately stalls on a cold start. It runs fine when warmed up. I have to give the car a few revs to keep the idle up until it carries itself. I changed the ECT, cleaned the TB and cleaned the IAC. It only improved a bit. Would a TPS adjustment help?
TPS adjustment will do nothing unless the sensor is currently out of range at closed throttle. That range differs on different computers, but A9L is 0.5-1.25 volts acceptable. Now, what MAY help is adjusting the throttle stop screw itself to allow more air through the throttle body. Turn it clockwise a 1/4 turn and see what happens on your next cold start. Do you have tuning capability or just running off the stock computer?
@@LeechMotorsports Hey. Just running off stock computer. Been trying to learn to resolve this cold start issue. Thanks a lot I will try to adjust the screw a bit.
Mike Schaap sounds good, if a 1/4 turn improves situation, but still needs work, you may want to do that again. However, if your idle starts to hang higher even after a few minutes of idling at full operating temp, you have gone too far. Another possibility is simply a rich condition. What injectors, maf, and cubic inches are you running?
@@LeechMotorsports I believe it's all stock.
If the entire engine is stock including throttle body, then you should do a base idle reset procedure. Then bump the timing up to around 12 degrees base and see how it does.
