What Happened to Metroid Prime 4?

  • Metroid prime 4 is supposed to be a more ambitious entry in the series, but is this really the reason we haven’t seen anything from it?
We haven’t seen anything about the game for over 5 years now, but it turns out there may be a pretty important reason for that
Some people think that we haven’t seen anything yet because it got rebooted at some point back in 2019. It makes sense! But I have a few issues with it. Sure, This tells us why it’s been so long, but it doesn’t explain the lack of trailers. Also, the game was in development for 2 years before the reboot, and still there was nothing, so something weird was going on. I reckon that they had an awesome idea at first and were excited to announce that it was finally in the works, but then things started to go downhill. Maybe there were unforeseen setbacks, development was taking longer than expected, or maybe their initial idea just wasn’t coming into fruition
Now, 4 years after the game was restarted, we obviously should see at least one trailer. Look at tears of the kingdom. That game got a teaser when it was only 1 year into development.
Technically, we’ve seen a ‘teaser’ but it’s literally just the logo with the number 4. Not much to go off really, but I bet some CZcamsrs have attempted to analyse what the number means.
However, there are actually some hints that point us towards what’s happened to this game.
The game started development with Bandai Namco, but it was eventually moved to retro studios, who are the original creators of Metroid prime. This may mean that what they had in mind is a bit of a shakeup for the series, however when developing with Bandai Namco, things started to stray a bit too far away from what makes Metroid Metroid, so they gave the work to the original creators, who know Metroid prime inside out. However, given it’s been so long since prime 3 on the wii, retro studios may have different staff who are unfamiliar with the series, hence the long wait time. For context, the first 3 prime games took only 2 or 3 years to develop. Sure, nowadays games are bigger making them harder to develop, but we’ve also got new technology that makes things easier. I think. I’m not a developer so don’t quote me on that

metroid isn't a powerful enough IP to sell a console. that's zelda, mario, and smash.
i guess it's possible for it to be a cross-generation game, but expect at least one of those other 3 to be a launch title as well. i'm willing to bet it will be a brand new mario game, odyssey 2 or something.

Covid surely slowed it down at Retro. Tears of the Kingdom took over 6 years, and we're still two years away from Prime 4 taking that long. I don't think Nintendo wants to show it until they have a firm release date after they embarrassed themselves with the restart. It's gonna be like Dread where it is a short window from reveal to release. I see Prime Remastered as the beginning of Nintendo getting us ready for Prime 4. We're definitely hearing about it soon.

we have newer technology to make games, and we have bigger teams to make them, but the scope of games has increased by a wide margin. gone are the days where a game like super smash bros. melee could be made in 11 months, with the majority of the cleanup being done by one guy near the end of its development. gone are the days where a super small studio of like 3 people could make the first 3d game on the SNES. nintendo has been working on tears of the kingdom for an incredibly long time and they already had the engine for it, and the team working on that game is likely substantially larger than retro's working on metroid prime 4.
i think it is a possibility they were also unsure of whether to make the game a canonical sequel to metroid prime 3 or to metroid dread, and trying to hedge on what they would do based on how well metroid dread sold. maybe they were hoping it would sell well so it could increase their funding to implement certain things in the game.

Now that we are close to the switch 2. And its the same people that worked on God of war 2018 it makes me excited. They are able to make beautiful character driven cutscenes with silent protaganist. I can just imagine the gameplay of metroid primer with boss fights and cutscenes of god of war. That would be easy goty

When MP remaster released and we did not get a single image from MP4 it says a lot. It says we are not getting the game on the switch. 1. 2. It suggests a possibility that the games development has been halted. Even if it meant revealing switch 2 footage, if it was close to done by now, or significantly close to done, they would have shown it. We got silence.

I have a good friend who works on this game at Retro, and while she's always careful to not talk about its progress in any kind of detail, she's happy to debunk the naysayers and the rumor mill.
Later we'll know more about why Nintendo approached Retro in the first place, but for now your take is about as good as it gets IMO.
My friend can't share details, and that's understandable.
What she did say is that she's stoked on it. She's excited for people to finally get to play it, and hopes are high that it will be a hit with fans of the original Prime.
For context, she's a Metroid Prime fan and worked heavily on the remaster as well.
Hopefully with the new year we'll see more info on its development.
Without any kind of credible info, my pie-in-the-sky hope is that we'll see Metroid Prime 4 holiday 2024 or early 2025. Fingers crossed 🤞

@@beardalaxy The Pokémon company DON’T care about their mainline games anymore. Hence, the hot mess. S & V works perfectly fine on switch and they just release a broken game. Pokémon is the Switch’s COD, Nintendo put the most care about it but it still fall under the rush release tactics of them and basically ruined by Game Freak and Creatures. Creatures only care about marketability of their mech and it is best that it is the most accessible. Nintendo is the best out of the three. Game Freak don’t care as the Pokémon will sell even if the game itself is broken. It’s a kid game on their eyes.
