@@meta9492 Yeah, but that's a technicality. It's far more than what's usually marketed as a "remaster". And the fact that it has the original code and plays exactly as the original game, makes it even better than most (if not all) remakes, because the gameplay is intact. Same as Diablo 2 Resurrected, which is much more than a simple remaster (and I hate Blizzard BTW).

@@nozzzzy There's a conversation to be had about companies labeling things as Remasters and Remakes. Remasters use the existing game as a base and add to it, and Remakes start from scratch. That’s a shame, some of the environments in Metroid Prime are so dark that I’d have to charge the arm cannon and use it as a flashlight. I am scratching my head why they don’t include that and save states as options for players to toggle. Metroid Prime feels really dated forcing players to trek to rooms to manually save- it’s such a chore. Even the widely-panned GTA Definitive Editions managed to introduce auto saves!

@@SmurffNationnWell, the remaster is significantly less dark for one. There wouldn’t be a need for that, since by the time really dark areas are introduced, you have the thermal visor.
As for save states, its a conscious choice by the game designers dating back to at least super Metroid. It amps up the tension as you traverse areas, as deaths are more punishing, forcing you to engage more with the game. Once you get used to traversing it becomes less of an issue, especially with the better controls.

I feel that auto-saves and checkpoints remove the weight and impact of death. If you know that death will set you back a lot, it creates more tension, which is exactly what Metroid needs. The fear of the EMMIs in Dread was completely lost on me because I knew death didn’t matter. I would respawn almost exactly where I died. That’s what made the SA-X in Fusion so scary. Most of the time, you had to travel a long way to return to the encounter, dreading it all the way. It made the sound of footsteps the thing that made my heart rate spike the most. Auto-saving has no place in a Metroid game

Just a little hot tip for those interested in the gyro control implementation as it was kind of confusing for me at first.
You can activate gyro controls in the dual stick control scheme to play the game more in line with an FPS such as Splatoon.
The hybrid format is something entirely different and kind of meshes the GameCube style while giving you wii pointer aiming when you hold the trigger. It's very unique and could be fun, but wasn't what I was looking for. So If you're looking for more genuine "wide turns with stick fine adjustments with gyro" look through the options in the dual stick controls.

Same! Would be weird it Switch only will get Metroid Prime 1 and 4. Where's 2 and 3?
I don't expect Metroid Prime 4 to get released now in 2023. Probably in 2024 if they don't release 2 and 3 as remasters before.
There's different release strategies to release all 4 games (if they do):
      Trilogy, 4 (no longer possible)
      1, 2, 3, 4 (one game per year)
      1, 2 and 3 as combo pack, 4
      1, 2, 3 and Trilogy, 4
      1, 2, 3, 4 and Trilogy
      1, Trilogy, 4
      1, 4, 2, 3
      1, 4, 2, 3 and Trilogy
      1, 4, Trilogy
      And some other strategies.
I have no idea how Nintendo will do it. If they do it. Since this is a business with profit ambitions we have to try to see what will be the best for Nintendo and Switch - and for the Metroid fans.
It would be so sad and boring if they will skip game 2 and 3. I hope they will release game 2 and 3 as seperate releases. And then Metroid Prime 4. That will give the dev team as much time as possible to make the 4th game as good as possible. Maybe there's a new and more powerful Switch when MP4 is ready. I'm so excited!

This is something Nintendo rarely seems to care to implement so the fact it was done here, ALLOWED to be implemented is huge.

As someone who only had a GBA when Metroid prime came out, but fell in love with the series with Zero mission and fusion, I can't wait to get my hands on this game and see just what I missed all those years ago. The level of polish you describe makes me think that's why only the first game in the prime series was released, but with the lower price tag and the fact that it uses the source code from the trilogy bundle on the Wii, I'm very hopeful we may see the later games get a similar treatment in the lead up to the reveal and launch of Metroid Prime 4. And with game boy and GBA games now on switch online, there's a chance we could see every Metroid game playable on a single console! Really goes to show how much optimization can push a relatively weak console to such impressive heights.

I grew up with NES/SNES and love the Switch for its attention to retro styles/franchises.
Games' digital versions on the system are SO much more convenient, however I do believe this one is worthy of (waiting &) owning on physical format.
    Can't wait!
Awesome review and keep up the great work! 👍

The doors were also changed to look more opaque rather than the transparent look the original had (one of the devs complained about this). Although it was likely an artistic choice to match it with the 2D Metroid games and for better visibility from a distance

Prime was an impresive visual game, it aged VERY well and this remastered made that even better.

The only thing I wish they added was checkpoints after you die, instead of sending you all the way back to the previous save station and having you to redo the last chunk of the game. I just played through the Phazon Mines again after years and forgot how brutal they are, if you die before getting the power bomb then good luck replaying the last 30-45min again. Its the type of thing that put off many gamers from the Metroid series in the past and hindered its mass appeal. Even Metroid Dread got checkpoints everywhere and nobody complained.

For an old school gamer like me, I don't mind redoing brutal sections, because that's how gaming used to be. You didn't get your hand held the entire time, you had to overcome, and when you did, the feeling of achievement is that much more gratifying. I don't want noobies to forget what old school gaming was like. If you're going to update games to today though, do everything like Skyrim, where you can literally save anytime anywhere. Otherwise, endure the challenges, legends 🗡🛡👾😈

I’m pretty sure that’s backwards about the heat effect on your weapon coming from the Wii version and not being implemented in the original GameCube version. I recall that they had to ditch it in Trilogy in order to make a consistent HUD using Prime 3 Corruption’s code base. There might have been something similar with the specks of water that land on your visor when you look up on the surface of Talon IV, but I’m not sure about that one. I recall the heat thing because it really bugged me that the Wii version was missing an effect from the GameCube version.

    • @3dmarth
      @3dmarth Před rokem

Some effects, like the heat distortion, were linked to the position of Samus's cannon on screen, and were removed for the Wii version. But the heat glow effect shown here is more like the subtle bloom lighting which was added to 1 and 2 in the Trilogy.

I must say... the suit Samus is wearing must have one of the most optimized compression systems ever invented. It fits an entire human into a ball and has lossless recreation of the original. 😁

I agree with your take on the change to doors. I think it makes even more sense given how there's virtually no loading between rooms now. If the door opens basically as soon as it's shot every time, that puts it more in line with all the 2D games!

10:00 one of the things that give some horror, survival, souls-like and metroidvania games their sense of dread, is save scarcity, and how it instills legit fear in the player due to the consequence of death.
So it sounds more like an intentional design to me and I'm glad they kept it.
