People don't understand how important it is to get ONCE into the system. Once you are in, you can search the house for other more easy vulnerabilities.
If you aren't inside, its hard to find those. I think these first hacks are the most important step in all devices to permanently build an access point.
On a personal note, I think companies should open up their hardware once end of life is archived. For example the WiiU is no longer profited from by Nintendo, there is literally no point in them not pushing a final firmware, that just opens the system with a "dev mode" that allows external software to be installed.
The dream would be this would be mandatory, but its just a pipedream. Until then we need the hacking community to continue their important work.

Crashmo is a great example of why QR level sharing is better, if it was server based or physical wireless based then we wouldn't have all those Crashmo levels we have today. Back then people would be posting levels on websites, forums and such and all you needed to do was scan it.

You should do a video about how YOU would do hardware/software security for a console, if you were hired to. I love these videos talking about how things were broken, but it would be cool to see what would or could be done to either make it impossible, or at least last long enough for the lifecycle of a console.

A bit related is the Vita 3.60 firmware version thing back in 2017 or when was it right before H-Encore showed up.
Any Vita on firmware up to 3.60 was easily 3~6 times the price of a newer firmware version. I happened to get interested in the Vita again right around that time, and managed to find a cheap 3.67 firmware version one extra cheap, right before people figured out those were also hackable now.

I remember those days like it was yesterday. When the game name was announced, I was VERY skeptical; I had this feeling like it was going to tempt me to buy the game at an inflated cost only to find out it didn’t work or was already patched. By the time I was convinced, it was too late haha! Price was crazy. I ended up waiting for another hack and don’t regret it, but I would have been nice to be on the front lines :)

  • @justsomesimplenuclearbirbs4313

To think, one little crappy puzzle game could cause such a big fuss which snowballed into the current 3DS hacking scene we've got today.
Of course, Cubic Ninja wasn't the only game on the system to have an exploit, but it was one of the much easier to use and more noticable ones.
Although at the time I didn't have any form of Wi-fi and so I wasn't aware of anything related to homebrew or hacking in general. But even then I didn't own Cubic Ninja when it came out, I'm not even sure if I ever heard about it.
The game I got when I first got a 3DS was Sonic Generations because that was the only game that looked interesting when I first got my console.
Of course nowadays I have a hacked 3DS of my own mainly because of all the cool homebrew apps, tools and games to play. And also being able to get now discontinued games is a nice plus, mostly because there are games that got discontinued way before the eShop shutdown that I really wanted as a kid.

I picked up Cubic Ninja after the price plummeted because there were other options. Great video on how it all started.

Huh, that's interesting. In the clip you show from Smealum, he's using the Japanese version of Cubic Ninja. And on the screen for QR code entry, there's a third option which in Japanese reads "StreetPass". That third menu option is missing from your (presumably USA) copy of Cubic Ninja. So the game had StreetPass support in Japan, but not the US? That's super weird.

This was a wild time. I remember seeing this game at the 3DS launch and the only bargain game I bothered with was that weird Chaos Theory port.

What a funny coincidence. I was just looking for something in my storage room today and then I found the game and remembered how I modded my Nintendo 3DS XL with it back then. I bought it at Gamestop for 9,99€ while it was already sold on eBay for a lot of money. The only Gamestop store with this game was 400km away from me and a friend bought it and sent it to me, it's always a funny story when we see each other.

My New Nintendo 3DS (Cover Plate model, not XL) started crashing yesterday! It would either power up but not boot, boot but crash 3-10 seconds after the Home menu pops up or crash at a random point during use! I unfortunately dropped it a week earlier so hopefully it's just a matter of reattaching a ribbon cable! However, I'm worried a trace or even a ribbon cable may have broke! My whole life is on that 3DS, including the many eShop games I bought just before the March closure! I know I can still redownload my eShop purchases if I do have to reboot the system but knowing that certain updates like Mario Kart 7's 1.2 update needed to be downloaded through the eShop, hope those updates can still be redownloaded! Thank you!

As important as it is I never really liked hacks that involve getting a certian game to use its features to exploid the hardware.
I just dont like to have games thst Ibdont wanna play on any of my consoles.
But I highly appreciated the effort to look into tons and tons of shovel ware to find that one game that is potentially exploitable and get a stating point frok there... It's magical.

Ohhhh man this takes me baaaaaaaaack!! I remember the NinjHax and LoZOoT hacks were all the rage... I went to visit a local game shop in my country and as soon as I entered the store a game brought my attention instantly! A new, sealed copy of Cubic Ninja! It was priced at around 5 bucks too.... I grabbed it ASAP and bought it with the money I had to buy lunch that day haha I was hungry for most of the day, but my gosh I was so happy! That streak of luck let me hack a large number of consoles for friends and anyone who asked me for help. I never charged a dime for the "service" and I made a lot of friends with it! 13 years later I still have that game securely stored in a drawer. I'll keep it forever since it reminds me of a great time in my life :D Thanks Smea and everyone from the scene for creating one of the most epic and cool communities I've ever been part of :)
The PSP one was also great! Had a lot of fun with that one too n.n
