      @@MTN1601 intel has done this in the 13th gen. They basically have an unlimited power target and the wattage will keep going up and up till it hits the thermal throttle limit of the cpu cooler. So the better cooling you have the better performance you have , cpu would remain pegged st 100c no matter what you do. And i think this will introduce a lot and lot of premature cpu failures in intel 13th gen laptops and desktops. Any cpu running at it's thermal limit will not last long, it could potentially last over it's usable lifetime but the chances of failure is greatly increased. Amd traditionally had this issue where chips would fail prematurely due to improper thermal solution and running at tj max all the time. Macbook pro's from the 2013 era with ati graphics are well-known for this issue.
      Some ryzen 3000 ando older cpus used with stock coolers and overlooked have similar issues this is why i have a thermal throttle limit set at 70c for my r7 1700 , incase some fan dies or something happens to the cooler the cpu would stop increasing power draw as soon as it hits 70c. Many has killed their cpu running too high of an overclock for few years. Such issues do not exist with the 5000 series. Or atleast i have not heard of one.

    If apple had stayed with intel until today, this 13980HX would be the macbook pro CPU of 2023. Since Apple always opts for low power consumption, it would perform like the unpluged tests, which were better than expected in my opinion. But Mac GPU would be Radeon 6600M, which is at the middle of M2 Pro 19 core and M2 Max 30 core. So, Apple succeded in that. We only need Metal and codeweavers to catch up!

You can actually get something more portable with equal performance for a lot less. Pricing is very competitive this year. The Asus scar 16 which is only $2900 has the same CPU, slightly slower but still beastly 4080, and miniled screen. It's not the unified memory on the MacBook for the web based performance. It's the javascript accelerators (not sure exactly what hardware that would be but it is heavily accelerated both hardware + software) on the apple chip. Apple saw the mobile future and invested big to make sure web stuff runs great.
    A 2018 Ipad pro gets a better speedometer score than one of my desktops and I know for a fact that desktop runs circles around the iPad in literally any CPU compute benchmark. The wonders of ASICs! Like I would never in a use an 2018 iPad pro to develop stuff but the benchmarks for web stuff say it's faster than that desktop! Defining the end goal in a nutshell. Apple chose the stuff that their users would care about and tackled that while intel is solely focuses on enterprise as they can sell one their chips for $10k to them. For enterprise stuff that can leverage AVX512, the intel chips (the ones that have full avx512 hardware) would absolutely demolish the apple chip. It wouldn't be close. They would also pull ~350W in the process.
    The biggest issue is the fact that a maxed out 4090 laptops costs $5k. That's unacceptable. $4k I could see, but 5k? For such a large and heavy machine? Just build a desktop, it'll be faster, much quieter, and cheaper.
    But the high power consumption, you say.... This is a desktop.... That you would spend $4k on. As long as it runs cool and quiet, power consumption should be the least of your concern. You'll spend like $200 max on a power bill for that system unless you render stuff 24/7.

    5:01 Are you sure it's because there are two SSDs in it in RAID 0? If I'm not mistaken this MSI GT77 Titan is the first laptop to have a PCIe Gen 5 SSD, I think that's why it's in the 10-12GB/s range. I think it's a safe bet to presume that the M3 Pro & Max MBPs will have PCIe Gen 5 support and therefore 4 lanes of Gen 5 going to the SSD as well, or to otherwise expect the SSD speed to increase since their competition will also make the switch to SSDs that can hit 10GB/s+.

  • @geoffstrickler

    With the 330W power brick (1.3kg), that MSI laptop (3.3kg) weighs in at over 10.1# (4.6kg) carry weight, not counting case or accessories. The MBP is 4.8# (2.2kg) + .5# (.28kg), and because of the battery life, you often won’t need to carry the power brick. Makes the 16” M2 MBP ~1/2 the carry weight.

      And what’s hilarious is I see kids saying they won’t even touch a MacBook Pro 14” because it’s too heavy….and they can literally only use a MacBook Air….guess they would think the MSI is like lugging around a dead body. That said, anyone who lived in the age of actually carrying books around in backpacks, would find the MSI still manageable….

    • @geoffstrickler
      @geoffstrickler Před rokem

      @@NOT_A_TOP_FAN Not really. I’ve been carrying laptops since the mid 90s, and never have any of them been as heavy as that MSI, and some of those were still heavy enough to be physically uncomfortable to carry for more than the 3-5 minutes it might take to get from car to office. Lighter than books, yes. Light enough to actually be portable? Not exactly.
      Now, if you spend the money for dual power adapters, and leave one home and one at your office, maybe it’s manageable. Of course, that’s only viable if you have just a few fixed work locations. If you actually need to be mobile, you’re back to carrying the power brick, and/or dealing with reduced speed and battery life issues.
      But even my current work laptop (Dell Precision 7520) is a pound lighter (6.2#) than that MSI, and the power adapter is about half the weight of the MSI adapter, total wt under 7.5#, and it’s still uncomfortably heavy to carry for more than 3-5 mins. And that’s with a lightweight carrying case, and the only other thing in the bag is a lightweight Logitech M325 mouse.

As impressive as the power is, it’s much more expensive which you hope it would be better. I wonder if it matters that you have the macbook on top another. Also, knowing that the intake vents are on the sides of the macbook, why then do you have the laptops next to one another? Spread them out a bit, the camera can still get both if they’re have some space between one another.

The entire adobe suite (and probably some web-based applications too) are very badly optimized for windows. If we talk about 'real-world performance' almost everything depends on optimization for both machines. One app will he better optimized for one machine, one for the other.
