for anyone wondering, on my GT77HX, MSI used regular thermal paste on GPU and CPU, and something like K5 pro on VRAMS instead of thermal pads. After repasting mine with MX 4 temps are bit cooler and i'm getting similar/slightly higher cinebench scores after following this undervolting guide. Heard good things about kryonaut extreme as well, might try it out.

Thank you very much for a detailed guide. I am an owner of this beast, and I was seeking guide to undervolt it, but i was missing the bios part to unlock it. You made it clear and now i will get lower temps. I don't care about these extra 12%, the main goal is to prolong the life of my system by lowering temps without sacrificing performance. Great channel!

  • @slickrounder6045
    @slickrounder6045 Před rokem +9

@48:30 Regarding the Core + Cache undervolt- The CLR (Cbo/LLC/RING) Voltage Offsett is what as referred to as the "Cache" offset in things like Throttlestop. Sadly the Bios Undervolt we did was only for the core offset. If the Cache undervolt was done as well, it would further boost performance and lower temps.
Edit- I see @ 58:00 that Gizmo also undervolted the Ring("cache") as well, awesome! I'd be surprised with that much of a cache undervolt it didn't crash though. Back in the day with the 9750H I was able to get a -150 Core offset, but not more than like a -120 Cache undervolt. With the 11800H i was only able to get like a -070 MV cache offset. From my experience and understanding, its usually much harder to get higher Undervolts on Cache, and those are the ones that primarily cause crashes.
Edit- @1:01:45 Yup the crash. That was too much of a cache undervolt lol. Probably -100 will work though, maybe a bit higher.
@1:11:20 "I'm guessing that the Ring is more sensitive " Yes that is correct. Going -125 on the Ring/Cache has a much higher chance of being stable than the optimistic/aggressive -150. Good idea to just do a minimal one on the GT (Igpu). It marginally can help if the integrated graphics are used ever, but don't want to go too overboard with that. Touching Uncore might have been dangerous, that could be what caused issues. I never touch it.

Also Kudos to Gizmo with the comprehensive guide to Undervolting these. He is handing over the cheat code to better performance and temps on these beasts! Here is looking forward to some Gpu Undervolting (possibly with overclock as well) in the future, using Msi Custom Voltage Curve. Double Undervolt= Double the Awesome.
Edit- 2:19:30 Undervolting with stock clocks on the gpu will boost performance a bit since it won't Power Limit Throttle as easily/if at all. Ofcourse the main advantage is much better temps and lower power consumption and lower fan noise. To get max performance one would want atleast decent Silicon Lottery to be able to get a respectable Undervolt AND be able to Overclock the Gpu simultaneously. That is how the highest benchmarks (on Laptops) are achieved, as well as the best performance in games.

One thing to be cognizant of with undervolting and OC'ing is that just because a particular undervolt or OC works in synthetic benchmarks does not correlate to that undervolt or OC working in real-world gaming or real-world applications. This is why I don't put too much stock into synthetic benchmarks. Any under-volting and OC work should be tested real-world.

That BIOS setting "Enhanced Thermal Velocity Boost" is one of the few differences in the i9-13980HX vs the i9-13950HX chip. If you read MSI's promo page for these high end gaming laptops, they say that Only the 13980HX can utilize their new "Overboost Ultra" technology. But we know that what they are really talking about is this new Intel boost. It adds even more wattage boost on top of all the other boost types that it has (turbo)... but does it while maintaining thermals?! This allows this laptop to draw 250W from CPU/GPU combined. I've actually been seeing my MSI laptop pushing the limits of it's total TDP, they don't tend to shy away from operating at 100% of it's GPU TDP like the ASUS G17 i tested. That thing claimed to have a 140w 4070 but never peaked over 110w that I saw.

honestly, these cpu's are too powerful and run too hot to game with on a laptop. that's why the 1% lows are horrible... disabling the e-cores and hyperthreading is a much more smoother gaming experience. all core turbo 5ghz+ 8 cores 8 threads is more than enough for gaming. if the game can't differentiate the cores from one another it just uses whatever core is available. if it uses the e-core, it will cause low performance. unless one is doing video editing, photo shop, etc. 8 cores 8 threads will get the job done for the average user. for the majority of people outside gaming and content creation, 4 cores and 8 threads is more than enough

He needs to be focusing on lower power consumption inside of HWInfo, and also disabling TVB voltage optimization, he has adaptive voltage on which will slightly over ride his undervolt even though he has an undervolt applied, the cpu is still pulling what it feels it needs. I imagine the 13980HX silicon is great, however that laptop is still thermally limited with and without his undervolt. However, less power and less heat is always always always better! @GizmoSlipTech Thanks, Gizmo. I definitely am. Upgraded the ram to Kingston Fury Impact 32gb 5600 and with your excellent guidance on the undervolting. I'm averaging around 34600k Cinebench stable. The Gpu is the 4080, timespy around 19404 with a mild overclock. 😁

Are the fans manually controllable on this gt77? Can you get it to where it’s relatively quiet under gaming and not in the default silent mode? On the scar 18 you can get it quiet and barely any performance loss on manual.

With my Raider GE78, I had to do individual undervolts. I am -150 on the P-cores, and -175 on E-core clusters 1, 2, and 3. E-core cluster #0 had to be -110 or I would see MCE (machine check errors) and occasional segfaults (linux) on CPU 8 or 9. So, you may be able to get better performance doing individual undervolts. I don't know if Windows supports process affinity (I only ran it long enough to do sone Cinebench R23 runs, with a best 10-minute score of 33,500 (TIM changed to ptm7950)) but you can do single-core benchmarks on each (or a multi-core on groups of 4 e-cores for each cluster test) and see where your stability is.

My CPU starts with all core frequency of 3,3GHz and then after several seconds drops down to 2,1GHz all core and the overall score that I get is around 17k in cinebench. I have Aorus 17X AXF with RTX 4080, 2x16GB HyperX 5600 CL40 DDR5. I have no idea what the hell is going on can someone help me? This is the first time I am using a high end laptop after 10 years I have no idea what is the problem. I have tried all presets from Gigabyte Control Center and it simply doesn't want to go above 2,1GHz all core. Temps are quite acceptable at 60 or even below that.

I have the exact same model. I installed w10pro because I don't really enjoy 11. My bios is on factory settings and I have 30 fps on full video settings on for example Doom Eternal. When I disable rtx it goes up to 144 but when I press any movement key it drops half almost but when I stop and just move the mouse around it's 144. I am not able to find a way to fix this. I am about to lose my... The device is behaving like it's not some premium device rather a potato build... Help a dude out please...

@@GizmoSlipTech I can get around 31500 with -150 P and E Cores and -.75 Ring. Didn't want to push ring too much like you did and blow up windows. Lol. The latest Nvidia drivers caused some locking up of the system when I wasn't over clocking. Really strange, audio would keep playing from youtube but the system would slowly stop responding and then die. I rolled back to the 4090 drivers from msi center live update and it seems stable again.

Some of it does apply, unlock intel XTU and it is a different interface. But pricinples of it applies. I was undervolting and overclocking the blade 18 earlier tonight to test it. Was pushing 31,500 in Cinebench R23 single run and over 30k in 10 min test.
I’ll be showing this tomorrow, during unboxing

I would not waste my money on the 16 or 18 in blade. PC Gamer tested a Legion 7i with a 4080 and in several tests it beat the 4090 in the blade. I don't think Razer will ever have their thermals under control enough to be competitive with other manufacturers with thicker laptops.

Have to switch to Integrated on the MSI control centre, then reboot. This unlock full CPU wattage. Unfortunately with the new BIOS versions (after 105) the Dedicated Mode is limited to 120W PL1 / 220W PL2

But sadly even if one of the highest clocked if not the highest clocked rtx 4090 mobile on a laptop like the GT77 titan , can’t give you NATIVE 4k at at least 60 fps on the most graphically intensive games like CP2077 with all maxed settings including max path tracing without upscaling/upsampling from a lower resolution to 4k which is not the same as native resolution, but if a desktop rtx 4090 and future desktop rtx 4090 ti that can go over 100 tflops and titan rtx Ada can’t get there what makes you one think a mobile laptop gpu with half the flops as those can do?😂
