I wonder if it was the church that broke her down. Not excusing him but if they were unequally yoked spiritually as well as in other areas she may have been stronger spiritually which put the pressure on him to do and be better. But instead, of trying to be the husband that she needed for him to be, maybe he "acted out" because he wasn't ready to submit to God but felt pressured to do so. She may have then in turn sought refuge in her faith since she had no control over him and how he chose to spend his time.
