A review of Android 12L itself will be coming soon. Several chunks of this had to be filmed again after the 12L update, everything said appears to still be true.
I guess the 12L release made things more difficult (not like you’re dealing with a lot already), but good job with the updates!
22:05 this part was a blessing to watch. What a cute puppy!!!
Duo 2 is really still an up-to-date device in terms of the hardware and now catching up in software.. Thumbs up, thanks Shane for relentlessly covering Duos despite of non-conformity, you could be more popular covering e.g. iPhones but this spot is really yours...
This makes me think Surface Duo 3 will get much better reviews than the previous two models.
Great work! The delivery and content of your product reviews is excellent. I’m still rocking my Duo 1 but as it is clear it will be a year before Duo 3 i will cave soon to the Duo 2. Thanks, Shane.
Hi there from Greece!!! I have it for 8 months...... I Love it..... i can't imagine myself without Surface duo 2!!! Simple the BEST!!!!!
Have just bought a surface duo 2, and have always followed your videos, keep up the good work man, appreciate your efforts
The review we have been waiting for.
This is fantastic review! I liked how you pointed out the keyboard thing and the back gesture! Really nice. I'm STRONGLY considering a Duo for my next device!
Glad you liked it!
Thanks for the video! This and the BlackBerry Passport have been my favourite phones. The Duo 2 is not perfect by any means but it's really great to be able to work across two seperate screens and the pens is good and even better with the 12L update... The 12L update has a great deal going for it but also has the feeling of "change for the sake of change" going on there too... Looking forward to trying out the camera improvements. My wife caught me doing a Gollum on it the other day 😀
Totally agree!
I love your reviews for the Surface Duo(s). They are what caused me to buy one and I've never liked any phone as much! Keep up the good work!
Serious Panos vibes (just faster) in that multitasking comparison segment! Well done, well done.
Great review; thanks-!!!
Photo quality was good enough to see the wasp nest!!!!!! Get that nest on that porch! Get it down Shane! 😂
Just got Duo 2 and watching your vids while it updates. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Was able to get brand new from UK
This my first time on your channel… dude, well said with everything. I love my Fold but I think I want to get the Duo as a swap here and there!!! I’m sold on it. I CANNOT go back to candy bar phones
Impressive review...just got Fold 4 this month...never knew about the Duo....your review has me wondering what would have been better... can see how the Duo is probably better for multi-tasking considering the keyboard issues and some other things you mentioned...but happy with Fold 4 currently
Hello great work on all your videos,^5 i have a Duo1 with no Bluetooth issues now on 12L
Very good video especially comparing how mulit tasking works with the fold. I had all the folds as well and retured the fold 4 because it doesn't do what I need it to do. I use two phones always for my business and the duo is everything except phone calls and text otherwise I use it exclusively and is my daily driver still. FYI the camera I think is solid though I use my candy bar style phone iphone 14 pro at this point for quick shots.
This is the best video that describes what it's like to use the Duo 2.
Great video, I finally sold my Duo 1 and got the Duo 2, I still use it as a secondary device because the form factor doesn’t work for things like taking a call one handed or going on a run. Now if the slim pen cover case would ever come in stock anywhere.
I'd do unspeakable things for a duo cover 😂. I HAAAAATE carrying the pen. The phone is already big as it is.
There is nothing else like it. I have been using mine to game on one screen and watch content on another. It is so awesome.
thank you for the detailed overview
Post upgrade, the overall experience is amazing. Love duo 2.
About to receive mine! Feel like a kid in Christmas! Would you recommend the bumpers? Already ordered a skin.
I've been using my Duo 2 since the beginning. It has been a frustrating at times. With all the updates, it's been a joy. I like the dual screen form-factor and aspect ratio.
If MS goes single screen, it still needs to behave like a dual screen, maintain the same or similar aspect ratio, and include an external display to answer calls via Bluetooth. I'm not expecting or needing a full sixe screr, but large enough to actually read text messages. If I want to respond, I can simply open the device like I normally would.
They can keep the rear camera and make the next device a bit thicker. I have the pen cover and one I modified for the right side and it's still thinner than the Z Fold 4. This would also allow for slightly larger capacity battery or Wireless charging coil.
My dream phone, wow! I can't afford them though..i will hold on to my Vivo V9..but that device really looks quite convenient when watching or typing..😊😊
SD2 is also my absolute favorite phone, completely unrivaled at the moment 😎👍
Haha, i try to tap to wake a lot too. Hope we get that at some point after all.
I respect your videos I'm not all over social media and do t comment on stuff and hate tiktok and what's app and all that crap.... Thank you for going over stuff I got a duo 1 and love it its allowed me to code and combine it with an IBM cloud account rocks :) I just wish I could replace the outside glass K. My D1 it's way to fragile though I'm always scared in gon a break it
I have the duo 2 and zfold 4. Love them both. Duo stills feels more natural to hold.
There's a lot of issues with the Bluetooth stack on Android. My experience - a network reset helps. That also can fix other issues with the network stack. And remember, there are two devices involved in a Bluetooth pairing, the issue could be on either side even if it does not manifest itself with other devices.
Very good yearly review. Also when you want to swap apps either side by dragging the app to the other sreen all you need to do is just slide it across instead of kind of lifting it up and across, easy peasy a simpe slide straight across from the bottom of the app.
I am more likely to miss the gesture if I don't go up at least a bit
Any chance you can do a short video of how to use one screen as an application screen and the second screen as a keyboard plus a touchpad? I deal with a 100% cloud-based PLM system. All my interactions and collaboration are through different web browser tabs. I was wondering if this might be a good device instead of a laptop or tablet+keyboard. Much appreciated and I have watched pretty much all your videos on the MS Duo..just trying to figure out when to pull the trigger.
Where can I get your wallpaper??? 😳 I love it
Amazing points in this video
Thanks dude!
Actually with the Duo 2 you can launch camera with double press of the power button and then shoot photos with the volume down button... All without even opening the phone.
Sure you may not get the exact composition you want, but it's actually quite convenient and useful.
My device just got an update and now seems to be hanging more, dropping wifi, and I don't like the cosmetic changes. Wish I wouldn't have done this latest update.
I still have the original and I just want to say, closing the phone makes the screen scratch free ..something I haven't experienced since the old flip phones that never really had 4k screens...so nothing to bother about. But today, I love I can close it. And one thing, using the camera and switch screens and able to look for strange angles is great. I searched for kid toys under beds, check mouse traps under stairs/attics and even the possibility to check my back when it hurt. It's funny and usefull. Just don't drop it.
Great job, of the puppy show also
Awesome how a device evolves over time just by great and consistent upgrades and support. This was a wel deserved re-review. hope this wil change peoples opinion about the Surface Duo. Its awesome.
Especially with android 12L. Cant wait to see you review about android 12L on surface duo.
Shane, Do you maybe have a link for that retro space wallpaper? Or point me where I could find it? Thanks!
I've been using the Note 20 ultra for over a year now and it's in my opinion the most buggiest phone I've ever used. Looking forward to Surface Duo 3.
Wallpaper awesome))
Like many computers and other devices, it's sad that consumers have to rely on "Reviews", before they buy something. I've never been that person. I love my DUO2 more than my DUO1... And I really loved the DUO1. Unfortunately for me still, the issue that I have still is the availability of protective cases that allow the foldabilty and functionality, as it should be used. I'm waiting on the Duover. I hope I get it before I drop this device.
How good is it with pictures and videos,I want to use it for my schoo, will you recommend it?
I got my anniversary letter from Microsoft recently 🥰
I was in the middle of getting ready to comment on your video and my o.g. Duo shut down and restarted...anyhoo hey Shane. Great review. Curious on your Duo 2, when folded are you presented with the tap to switch function when flipping back and forth? My Duo does it flawlessly but the D2 doesn't.
Duo 2 defaults to the right screen by default and only offers to switch when you first go into phone mode. Something they changed on 2.
@@scaryifliteral Aw man. Ok Thanks.
Your review convinced me to buy the Fold 4. Better in almost every way. The differences you mention between the duo vs the fold are almost non existent. I can resize my two windows on the fold and the keyboard issue, opening 2 apps isn't cumbersome at all, just simply tap the window you want and navigate. It's actually really easy. But I love resizing and saving multiple windows is so much better on the fold. Not to mention the s pen and the use of dex. And the kickstand comments? Are you kidding? Id much rather view a movie in full screen on the fold than on the duo. I actually think the fold blows the duo 2 away but that's just my opinion. Glad you like the duo just didn't even hear one actual point that beats the fold 4
If comes down to preference, I have both and generally other Duo. Hope you're happy with the Fold, it's a great device!
I had fold 3 & now fold4 I'm going to sell it as I just bought a duo1 for cheap. I will save money and have Duo1 to use until Samsung gets their act together with the garbage front screen and better multi screen.
On the plus side of the surface duo is you will not have the issue that some people have with the z folds or z flips where the screen at the crease ends up with a black line or the screen protector peeling
The only hard part of the new 12 L was trying to link my old Samsung Galaxy watch 3 to MSD2. I Had to reset the reboot many times before the software would finally work. BUT BUT it may be operator error once again.
Hello Shane Craig. I would like to ask if you experience similar situation where your Surface Duo can only reach 99% when fully charged. I am bothered. 🙃
Thanks for the video.
What's up with the Pen Cover case not being available? I just got the Duo 2 a few weeks now and got the pen. Not knowing i could not charge it via Qi.
I'm sure this has been discussed already but i can't find it. I just can't find the Obsedian version. Not in my own country or abroad.
Microsoft has said they're having supply chain issues which is making it hard to stock these products.
Hi Shane, thanks for the video. Is it possible to open the app Thinkorswim twice (one on each screen) on the Duo 2? Thanks!
Not familiar with that app, but you can clone most apps with appcloner.app/
I wonder how these perform, sales wise. Are these performing enough to continue investing in, or are they en route to get the for-corporate-use ala Hololense and Surface Headphones.
I hope they keep with it. The first surface computer didn't do well now Microsoft is doing great with them. Took a few tries to nail it. I hope they do the same with this phone.
@Shanecraig are you still using daily & consider the SD2 your favorite phone?
I've moved on to the Pixel Fold. Duo is still in my top few all time though.
Hey Shane. When dualing 2 phones with 1 SIM card. How do u maintain the photos taken and say messages ? You have to use Google photos?
Google photos and SMS backup and restore
27:28 I also experience that unresponsiveness bug
I must compliment your stream of consciousness. Nothing turns me off more that a load of "um", "er", "you know", "like" etc. ad nauseam. You have none of that- so kudos. I've always maintained that this mode of speaking is the sign of a good mind. It certainly facilitates your narrative about the Surface Duo. Thanks for doing the video.
I appreciate that, thanks!
My volume has a mind of its own and keyboard clicks always on now even with button in settings off with 12L on my D1
I have problems wanting to pair my slim Pen 1 to duo 2 is no longer compatible or is problem of the update?
One of my siblings wants to trade me his Microsoft duo 2 for my google pixel 7 pro,What is your opinion should I go for the trade ?
what gcam port you using?
I have the duo one currently and with all the improvements in them both I'm THRILLED, in your opinion does the two judtify the 1k difference?
Really comes down to the camera. If you don't care about it, then probably not.
I have had AWFUL Bluetooth audio issues. If I go outside with any Samsung earbuds, its drop city. Maybe in 1 minute of audio 20 seconds of that 1 broken up. Ive tried all the codec changes and dev settings. Really only happens outside though, not indoors.
Shane could you provide the link for the walpaper you use
They're all from the app called backdrops
I'm with Rose, dandelion seeds have a horrific taste.
Also, thanks for the review. I'm so, sooo close to buying a used Duo 2 to fill the V60 sized hole in my heart. 😩
@@michaelcorcoran8768 I liked my V60 but the part-time solution for dual screens was cool but I think I'd like the more "permanent" solution something like the Duo 2 offers. I saw one on eBay for around $700 buckaroos.
I also have a Fold 3 and a Pixel 6 Pro and a tech problem also lol
it's like a foldable but without the disadvantages of foldable display xD
The bugs are not completely gone ....this morn mine just restarted randomly and it flashed the logo boot screen over and over until I hard reset it.
The launcher has crashed only once since the update immediately after the update ....today I have been using all day with no bugs ...so far huge improvement
I never said the bugs were gone
12:40 My Duo 2 still has awful Bluetooth cut-outs frequently. I've only ever tested it with my Jabra Elite 75T earbuds. None of my other devices have issues like that with my earbuds.
Edit: What's worth mentioning I think is that the problems always occur in the same physical space. It always happens to me on a specific street where it's always busy with other students who all have their own earbuds in. This leads me to believe that it's an interference issue. Oddly enough, I swear that it sometimes seems like simply waving my hand in front of my pocket induces a sound stutter.
I have that issue with my Sony earbuds and my Duo 2. Not tried since the Android 12L update, but I so much as put the phone in my back pocket and the audio cuts out frequently.
I am using Jabra BT headphones and everyting working fine
Me too, and it's always in the same geographic places in urban areas.
Same here, tried the Jabra 75e 65e and 75 and 65 with same results. same headphones paired to a samsung Note9 Galaxy 8 etc feels like bluetooth range is 1km
I sold my Fold 4 for the $3,000 Huawei Foldable because of the Fold 4's unbelievably annoying small cover screen. Now that you've introduced me to the Surface Duo, I'm VERY inclined to try it or a new iteration of it!!
I suppose you'd like something more specific? Perhaps I'll make a disclaimer: While a small thing may not be a narrow thing, a narrow thing can be a small thing.
In this case, the front of the Fold Z are both.
There is problem in sound system. It is not like mobile but dual display mini tablet
i like the duo one because of no camera bump and win11, but the duos are deff better than the z folds
Have you considered porting your number into Google Voice? It would make sim swapping just for recording a thing of the past. And also open you up to multiple prepaid lines to give complete carrier coverage.
For instance I have a Boost Mobile one year 1gb/month sim in my work duo. I have wifi more than cellular in the building anywhere, VOIP, or over the cell network is seamless. And when I grab out my personal cell, no sim swap needed. Just grab and go.
I've honestly never messed with Google Voice. I guess I'd have to look into how all that worked.
@@scaryifliteral imagine if your phone was in the cloud. That's it, that's the whole thing. Sometimes I think about leaving, but my phone being anything with a web browser(or app support) is absurdly convenient. Plus it allows the use of prepaid sim numbers to give out to companies and lists and stuff. All from one device.
I miss the durability of the Nokia Lumia gorilla glass. You could hammer a nail into a 2x4.
can you tell me where you got that wallpaper for the duo from?
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.backdrops.wallpapers&hl=en_US&gl=US
@@scaryifliteral thank you!
When you have two apps open on the Left and Right screens, what is the gesture to go back on the Right screen? (Left screen = left edge swipe-in to go back, but I can't figure out how to go back on the Right screen).
Left screen, swipe in from the left side. Right screen, swipe in from the right side. Treat each screen like a phone and swipe from the outside edge.
@@scaryifliteral Ahh... Much appreciated!
Is it possible to run a game on one screen and a different app on the other?
Yep
Can you watch a video or play a game spread over both screens not just 1?
yes
Hi Shane, my actual device is an Iphone 12 pro. I really like Surface Duo 2, for many reasons (I always use Microsoft apps in my job, the design, multitasking, ecc.). After so many improvements, what is your opinion about the cam? I suppose that the only way to take a selfie is using the internal one. Best regards!
Camera is much improved
Good review. I have both Duos. I noticed that my OG Duo will acknowledge each time I flip it back and forth to either screen when folded. However on the D2, it does will only allow me to switch sides once when folded. Have you or anyone else noticed this? Side note, how do I get that transparent keyboard.
Will Microsoft make a Samsung dex like system, that will make a full laptop experience when on a monitor?
It looks like they're going to do something a little strange and instead of having a desktop running on the device they're going to do something cloud-based, it may only be for 365 subscribers though.
@@scaryifliteral seen some Samsung smart monitors where it has MS 365 already installed and you just sign in.
for me, if the surface duo came with a screen extension for monitors, like the dex, then that would be my ideal product.
I would have an all in one mobile device. Wouldn't need a laptop to carry if I can plug it into an monitor at work, or at a client's or at home.
The Samsung fold has it but, as like your comments, the mobile itself is more like a foldable tablet than a multi screen gadget. Which is not what I'm looking for.
So keeping my fingers cross for a Microsoft software update on the duo that would do that.
Microsoft Lumia 950 had "Continuum" for Windows Phone in 2015 before Samsung "DeX" for Android in 2017. I'm sure they can bring that back.
Anybody know !! how we can open 3 windows on screen ? e.g. Chrome + Facebook + Calculator
Microsoft should definitely have called it a Surface Phone, because it's a phone but a Surface, like when Apple released the iPhone that was a phone but 'i' about what was there. And furthermore, if the price had been around €/$899 or €/$799 for the basic version, they could have released the Surface Tab (Surface Neo with Android) starting at €/$1,199 or €/$1,099. For me it's the Surface Phone. Let's see if I'm lucky and get one. But it lacks a desktop mode or that when connecting it to the monitor or lapdock it opens Windows 11 (they try that with Windows 365), without fear of commercially damaging sales of PC or laptop, because depending on what you always use it for, you will need a pc or laptop.
@7:12, you should have answered Jessi right away.
My volume going down has a mind pc it's own and keyboard clicks always on now with 12L
Wallpaper plz
#Scaryifliteral - One Line Review - Still My Favorite Channel for Duo News and Information!
About the bluetooth cutout, this issue is what pushed me over the edge to sell my Duo 2. I am a HEAVY user of my airpod pros while out and about and on the Duo and Duo 2 it would constantly cut out and then the audio would be weird until I disconnect and reconnect. If I put it in my pocket forget it, it's never going to stay connected while moving. I even tried putting it in a chest pocket in my jacket, literally a foot or less from my ears, and still got cut outs. If I reach for my Duo to pull it out of my pocket, the signal cuts because it can't go through my hand. This along with the missed touches every
How is the phone on it ?
Not frequently used, but never had any issues when I do.
The surface duo is simpler to use than the z fold
Annoying to take off a bumper one time in months ?
Yeah
Wallpaper link plz
It was in an app called Backdrops.
RIP Surface Duo 2… 🪦
Duo 2 isn't dead lol
My game pass no longer is working since upgrading
This was broken prior to 12L czcams.com/video/YbaUg8Euj7s/video.html
@@scaryifliteral cool I missed that video I just put the Sim back in th duo 2 since the 12L it's still my favorite fold. I sold my fold 3 and got a s22 ultra and that's my main phone right now
Sorry brother, I wanted to like this phone but its not there yet. Not even close.
I want one so badly.
I love my Surface Duo 2. For me, best phone ever!!
My only complain is the mic people keep complain that they barely ear me on phone call and google meet
