I got the DUO2, after previously owning the DUO1. The camera bump isn't really that bad. I love this device. The gap with the camera bump is noticeable, but I got so used to very quickly. I Love your Videos! Thank you so much for supporting the DUO Community.!
After using a Z Fold 3 for five months I got tired of its weird ergonomics, fragility, and clumsy form-factor so I traded it on an upgrade to a new Surface Duo 2. Thankfully the Duo 2 fixed all the things that were wrong with my Z Fold 3. The Duo 2 is a far more sensible device. Love my Duo 2, and thanks for the nice review on the first Duo.
Great video JW! 🎯
I would get the Duo 2 if the camera bump didn’t get in the way. Just ruins it for me. I love the fact that you can close Duo 1 both ways and it is flush.
Just ordered my Duo 1. Delivery out in my city right now so about to get my hands on it today. Can't wait.
Same, I was a pre-order customer for SD1. I stuck with it for 5 months and it was just too buggy. With the release of 12L, I dug it out of the closet and updated it. It's like a completely different device. I'm going to daily driver it this week and see how it goes.
How has it been? Just ordered one for myself
@@bloodbornepro I went back to my S21 this weekend. I am outdoors alot (fishing, camping, etc) and the Duo just doesn't do well there. When I was using it during my work week, it did well enough. It is still limited due to the hardware and I missed the "quickness" of my S21. Good luck!
I have the Duo as well. Not my main device, but as a secondary device it is great...
I completely agree they should not put another camera bump on duo 3.
I've been OG Duo since launch and got the Duo 2 at launch and have been daily driving it. It's such a transformative device. There is nothing on the market than even comes close to the dual screen usability. Sure the Z Fold devices are great but they will at some point have a display failure. I still get stopped every day and asked what kind of phone I have. When I show them, they have a puzzled look like, "Are your from the year 3022?" love it and MS has a hit
Thank you for another amazing review!!! You are an amazing reviewer and a phenomenal guy!!!
Bought a "broken" Duo 2 - cracked back but perfect screen - on ebay for $350. Best phone I've ever owned! Improved over the Duo 1: better touch response, waaaaay better camera, made it a prefect device for me. Yes there were initial Android 12L bugs but fixed now.
Like your reviews. The only problem is the older handhelds Duo2 are not currently 5g current.
Exactly my thoughts! I never owned a surface duo but bought one on eBay brand new sealed for £329. I received it today and was blown away by how thin and gorgeous it is! The fact that I’m falling in love with it more than my Samsung Fold 4 must tell a lot! I specifically got the Duo 1st gen device because of the lack of the camera bump! I hate it on the 2nd gen one. The camera bump just ruins the device for me. I love how it feels in my hands and how I can use to read kindle books, just amazing! Now especially since people are buying these likely as second devices, it just makes 0 sense to have a camera bump.
It just lacked to much for a premium price tag. $250 is a good price.
Thanx for your advice
I have a T-Mobile version of LG Velvet with dual screen case and while I love it this device has me tempted to get it my my my
if i were to get it as daily driver is it good as a primary device?
i don't make a lot phone call or take photos, but i have heard the ghost touch issue is terrible on duo 1 has the new updates resolve the issue?
Thoughts on S21 FE vs Duo 2? I have both, haven't used the duo 2. Been thinking about switching to the Duo 2 daily
Just got one, I hope I like it
Hey J Will, so glad you're covering the Surface Duo again, as I've just recently gotten my hands on one finally and absolutely love it - an amazing secondary device / tablet! It totally reminds me of the days when I used the Google Nexus 7 as my secondary device - a Nexus 7 that easily fits in your pocket! I feel like if Microsoft had marked the Surface Duo as a folding tablet with phone functionality to get real work done, then it would have been much better received by tech reviewers! For instance, most tablets come with average to terrible cameras...
I've been able to improve the touch response by going to "BATTERY OPTIMIZATION" and select ALL APPS and set SYSTEM UI, MICROSOFT LAUNCHER, SWIFTKEY, and GBOARD set to "DO NOT OPTIMIZE."
Also, I totally agree with you about Surface Duo vs Surface Duo 2. For me, I only need a selfie camera on my secondary device. I was blown away by the screen brightness, as well as the quality and slim design. I had concerns about the battery life, and while it isn't as good as my LG v60, for the size of the battery, it has been a real champ (utterly decimating my expectations with always over 5 hours of battery life). I also use auto brightness, but I always find that the brightness is a little too low for my liking when indoors. Great update, and hoping you might do some new accessory reviews for the Duo - for instance, Sopi guard, since Dbrand no longer sells skins for the Duo, or perhaps some good, cheap alternative pens to the Surface Slim Pen? Thanks!
If you could only keep one, would you keep the fold 4 or the duo and why?
Just bought one these 3 weeks ago and live it only we need is android 12 and would be perfect for now
For me the Duo is by far the best multitasking phone on the market. The Fold and others like it are good media devices but multi tasking it's streets ahead. The design is amazing. Yes it has its faults but the positive outdo them. Especially with Android 12L. This phone is not for anyone but people like myself who works in It and runs a hockey club it's perfect for my day to day work. It also looks amazing compared to the fold looking devices.
I do like the Surface Duo but for me the LG V60 with dual screen was a better buy because it has 8 GB RAM and 865 SOC, better cameras. I know it's not as elegant and has a bigger gap in the middle but no one is watching videos on both screen on either devices. The Duo 2 might be my next device because I do not mind the camera bump and it has better specs.
Can you have CZcams comments/live chat on the second screen whilst CZcams vid is on 1st screen
I had a Duo 1 about a year ago that I picked up off Swappa and sold later. After this vid I picked up another from Amazon for about 329 and I'm loving it as a secondary device. It's made me put the Fold 4 down for a while and rock the Duo and Flip 4.
Just got a brand new 256 GB one for £350 as wanted one for ages. I agree about the 2 as a big part of the appeal was the flush fold over and already used it that way quite a lot.
I have done exactly the same and waiting for DPD to deliver tomorrow here in Wales!
@@tomstuart1955 it’s a really nice device. One of the things I really liked was I opened a full A4 PDF across both screens and even with the middle split I just put that in a paragraph split and it was a dream to read on. I’ve also used banking app and excel bills sheet on the other and it works so much better than on a Z Fold. You can get real productivity done on it. Also Google Play books sees it like a book which is 🔥
Where was you able to find for that price?
Got mine from Technoworld UK online £349
@@tomstuart1955 thought I’d replied to say that but phone must have died! Good old hotukdeals 😂
Great video as always
Curious if you would be interested in the Vivo X Fold. The Hardware looks incredible. it's a Chinese release but will work with all bands in the US. I'll be getting one end of next week, look forward to comparing it to My Fold 4. I absolutely loved the Duo 2. But in the end I preferred the Fold 4.
I have a Vivo X Fold for sale brand new boxed. But I'm based in the UK
J, go get a keutek magnetic charging cable and adaptor. I've had this adaptor in my duo since you first reviewed it and my charging port hasn't cracked at all. Still perfect.
Waiting for duo 3 .....
you have a year to wait. it wont be anytime soon
It's actually worth the wait. The Duo 1 is just kinda underpowered and a bit too old and Duo 2 was a real mess in my opinion. (ugly and less comfortable due to camera module)
I've had my eye on these devices for around 3 years, but nothing has convinced me to go for it yet. We need a better price, with more of the original Duo's focus on design.
Tbh, I was kinda disappointed they gave up on the Surface Neo. That looked awesome.
Still a great device, yep the article said that lol
The surface duo was my first folding phone that I brought because of you and Shane who mainly covers the surface duo. but it was to many bugs/freezing , and I needed a better camera so I went with a z fold . But when it worked it was good I had the shadow PC app on so I could have a windows PC on it paired the with arc mouse .
When did you sell it? Duo has been crazy good since March this year.
@@Ronnet august last year . I ended up buying another one 2 weeks ago it's pretty good but still little things that are a little irritating.
I think what I'm more curious about is what exactly Microsoft are going to do with their version of Android 12L once they supposedly launch that either the end of October or in November I think is the rumor
Where Can I Get That Screen Saver Pic?
Mine won’t boot, I tried the vol down, power press and release. 😢
Would pick one of these up if I didn't just PO the Pixel 7 Pro. I did want one of these when they launched but that price tag stopped me in my tracks.
I like your positive feedback for Duo1 once (twice?) again. I wonder though how you achieved that long battery life as my Duo1 recently drains battery much quicker than before.
Wow. I’m still shocked. Must be an app, as I do not use facebook. It drains the battery
Keep in mind, it wasn't simply about Microsoft taking their time, it was also that the version of Android at the time of launch was just not optimized for this device. 12L is perfect.
bumper are unavailable, you have couple spare. ?
Mr. J will you come back to the surface duo 2
You know what they maybe late but they finally fixing the software on not only duo 1 but 2 also. I feel like they should do a duo 3 and design it like the first one In style. Imagine MS throw a all out spec for it that would be awesome
some did put full windows on it
I was one of the original buyers too. I had to import from the US, has it was available 6 months earlier than the UK. So it cost me a lot of money - I sold it like you - made a profit. But I’ve purchased and sold many times since. Like you, I feel the Microsoft surface duo 2 was an afterthought and I found it too clumbersome. Any way I’ve purchased a new first edition at the same time as you ( slightly spooky) and it’s a more refined experience. I value your opinion J - you have an intelligent approach to technology. ❤
Even being extremely careful with mine I still got a cracked charging port. Apparently its a big issue. Really disappointing 😞
9:47 flip the device to landscape
Thanks for the revisit to the Duo. I broke my Duo and later got the Duo 2. I missed my Duo so much and really don't like the camera bump, so I got it twice on the used market. Got the 128GB for 319$ and later found a 256Gb for the same price. I totally agree with you that Microsoft got the hardware on the first Duo mostly right but admit the Duo 2 is more durable. On the Duo, I wish Microsoft made the screen slightly larger like on the Duo 2, added the same bump-free camera to the back side for quick snapshots, and added NFC. Let's call it the Duo+...lol. Duo 2 is still my daily driver because I need NFC. I was an early adopter of the Samsung Galaxy Fold and prefer its original design with the small glance screen then it's later wider iterations regardless of pen support and water-resistance. I hope Microsoft keep on making Duos as I fully support the device and its purpose. I greatly appreciate you and Shane for making videos for the Duos! Kudos!
The best of phone!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I am the first batch of owners of Surface Duo. I use it to do trading when I am away from computer. The two displays are great for me. And I love it. Can't wait for Surface 3. I would like they keep two displays
Is it true that the phone call quality on the original Duo has gotten worse in 2023 ?
Definitely not satisfied with any camera bump. The s23 ultra did it right. Not to say the pop up cameras arent good but the fear of it not working will always be there. Now surface duo 3 should copy that hardware design a nice slim interactive outer display for quick interactions would definitely make the surface duo 3 a competitor and not just for a niche group but for the general populace. Still havevny duo 1st gen but right now, my lg wing is serving its purpose very well and will continue to use it until it completely falls apart
Does Google Pay work on this device?
Nice video.
I bought the Flip 3 last year but I traded it in for a candy bar phone ... Lol.
I'm currently looking at getting an unlocked Surface Duo for $300+.
Glad to know that the Surface Duo also has an eSIM.
16:10 im exactly that person... looking to get 1
it's a good phone I have the 2 and screen not that good
How you get it for $250?
I love it but I can't receive text messages
Is that one is the second one or the first one
That's the first release at those prices. The second version has a serious camera bump.
The Duo 1
Waiting for Duo 10 jk this device is enough for anyone
For the algorithm. ✊
Had to send mine back in to insurance claim they paid me a check for 1500 for amount i paid when it came out but i just purchase a surface 2 unlocked for 140 wt a steal
imagine same screen size Duo 3 without bezzels and smaller middle crease and third frond notification display.....
How long will Microsoft even support this phone?
$250 is a great deal for this
Gotta get one is 350.00 worth it?
I'd say anything under $400 is worth it, especially if it is the unlocked model with 256gb, since Duo doesn't have SD Card support. Although, it has been on sale for $250-300 at least a couple of times recently...
Waiting four duo 3::::😢
No Surface Duo 3 - Microsoft has killed the Surface Duo line due to a lack of sales
You got all the money and cars to make up for it
GREAT FOR EMULATORS GAMING 😎
for $300? oh yes! The idea of Surface duo is to operate two screens. Samsung is about one big screen instead.
I want a more compact Duo
Nabbed one a lady used for 3 days and put away. MINT for $150
💪🏾💪🏽💪🏿
pass
There is now a new Google Play update for the surface Duo one and two it just came out in the last few days so go check that and update it also right before Android 12 l comes out in a couple weeks
