I love my Surface Duo 2. And I think it's a great device. But I think the concept is too complicated for the masses. It takes effort and commitment to use the device in daily life. The camerabump in the 2 makes it even less accessible. I truly hope Ms can perfect the experience for future devices. But I think it will always remain a niche concept. I think you are right on the fact that this not just a smartphone. It's actually a pocket pc.
Agree with your comment, not a huge fan of the camera bump but it's still only the size of the one on the Note 20 Ultra bump - just feels more intrusive on the Duo 2

I've got the same setup. Duo 2 and Pro 8. Plenty of times where I need to use my Pro 8 as a laptop but also need to take notes.... Duo 2 comes in really handy.
In F2F meetings I find taking just the Duo in works really well. It's a bit less distracting than a full size tablet at times where you only need to take light notes and won't be doing a ton of diagramming
I'm with you on this. For me I own the original Duo and had it for 6 months now. For me it's replaced my laptop for alot of things. Video editing, social media posts, general work in office. Multi taking like now watching this video and editing my website. I also prefer the Duo over the Duo 2 for how the camera is. Yes it's not as good but folding the screen over fits me better. I also use it for teams and calls over our office voip. I do use it for the normal phone but not often. Don't miss outside screen as have smart watch and same for tap to pay. For me I cannot see myself going back to a single voice device. Car audio issue you are having with the car has not had any issues. For me the Duo is defo the turning heads when I am out and about. For me I'm glad I was an early adopter. I came from note 8 too and enjoyed that phone but the Duo is like nothing else on the market.

Excellent video on an excellent device. I'm still rocking the Surface Duo 1 that I picked up on sale about 6 months after launch. I do have to close and unfold fairly often, but overall, it's been a game changer.

my sd2 is coming to my work place tomorrow, so pumped, i had to watch this whole amazing video again. For me its my dream device and a no brainer to get this one, even it not beeing officialy available in Brasil.
I've carried both the Surface Duo and Surface Duo 2 daily since the device launched as my sole device. This is when I work, at home out on a walk wherever. I was in the late majority for Smartphones with a Lumia 520. Not using those until family data plans, I was in the early adopter group for my Surface Pro 4. I am a day one Innovator group since I got my Surface Duo at launch.
The Surface Duo and now the Surface Duo 2 are outstanding. I never had much issue with either of them. The device always has a charge, always has an expansive canvas It's a joy to use daily. I read a lot more and can fire through social media and news on two screens. It works well with my Surface Laptop Studio too. Great devices and the apparent next thing over single-screen pocketable devices.
People all complaining that they have to open it more and it takes extra steps to use. I want extra on my phone.ore to do on a phone makes it exciting. Oh no it takes a whole second more, cause that's just so long. It's not lol. Let's bring back the crazy weird phone with touch screen. I want the flip out keyboards and two screen and fun stuff not just a candy bar that lights up.

I have to say that I've been quite compelled by the Duo 2 for a while now (going waaaay back to that video for the Courier!). However, being burnt so often by being an early adopter back in my 20s, I tend to wait for the third iteration of a product before jumping on board. I do have to admit that you've made some really compelling points about getting one. If nothing else, the OneNote integration would be extremely helpful during my many Teams meetings.

I loved the original duo, and I love the duo 2... I upgraded to the duo 2 because I need real dual sim.
You can take pictures of documents to pdf right from the folder you want the document to be in from the One Drive app.

I had to buy and cut off part of a bumper to protect that one uncovered corner. Wish it would just come with that bit included.
Good deep dive I enjoyed it. My major concern with MS is they chop n change and then drop a product like a rain storm. Until they stick with it and keep progressing with the Duo I will be watching in the wings on this. I love the form factor but MS are horrific at keeping good form. So will see! 👍
Love mine. Hope they stick with the dual screen for a while. It's nice to always have a pen with this.

I'm just happy the phone is not as laggy as the OG Surface Duo
I have been debating getting one of these eventually, I purchased a motorola edge a little over a year ago and think it is too early to be swapping it out even though it is being a bit iffy on its performance already. I absolutely loved my Lumia 1520 that I had before the battery lost capacity and would no longer charge. If windows put out a version of the duo with a windows OS I would absolutely switch now though. The biggest draw the lumia had for me is it used pretty much all the same apps I used on my computer. When I transitioned to Android I had to download almost a dozen music apps to find one that had functionality I enjoyed, didn't barrage me with ads even stopping my music to play them, and actually recognized all the file formats I had for music in my libraries. The ebook and email display looking so good even with this version though is another drawing point that certainly influences me wanting to check this out, it could easily replace my tablet when reading novels on the go, though I think it would still be too small for reading technical books with diagrams and such.
I mean now that the duo 1 has been under $400 in the United States for the better part of a year. It's about the same price as a fully spec up Kindle Oasis. It's worth the money alone as a premium e-reader / note-taking device. I wouldn't want it to be my primary device, probably not even my secondary device. But absolutely worth it if you want and versatility reader/tablet as a supplemental device
I've been considering getting a Duo 1 for a while now. Just running it with WiFi as a companion product to my Surface Pro 8.
I have been using the OG Duo as my primary device for over a year.
And have never experienced any problems.
No wonder 75% of reviews on Best Buy and Amazon give it 4 or 5 stars.
While I'm not ready to drop over $1000 on a Duo 2, I have been looking at a Duo 1 just to experience some of the benefits you highlighted in this helpful video. It's frustrating that even on Apple's latest Pro Max devices they refuse to implement split screen. Even two small screens would be much more useful in many situations but it seems to come back to their insistence on having users purchase auxiliary devices rather than striving for an all-in-one (or at least 'most-in-one') mobile solution.

Great overview of use case scenarios. Strange that you have issues with social media with yours, I don't have any at all. Although I don't use use it for thst use case very frequently, I do occasionally use it for Instagram and Facebook and it works great using both screens vertically
This device needs Outside Screen, Microsoft System not Android, full desktop app, pin the pen inside the device then it will the highest professional device

What improvements have you noticed?
@@oztabletpc I actually felt that the system (gestures, touch responsiveness) are getting pretty close to its maximum potency. Sd2 is like an old car. You change something here and there and the smartphone will attempt your need. For example, typing in the phone mode was always a problem for me. Adjusting the settings from the keyboard now I can Type preety fast and without any major problems. The 3rd party notifications on glance bar is something that I believe that should be avaliable since the launch of sd2. Now regarding the camera: I only use gcam so I can't make a deep analysis of any improvement. If you never tried (gcam) you really should!!

Duo 2 is perfect for me
if they could take just one of these 2 screens and mate it to an aluminium frame/shell with some midrange hardware i would definitely like to try it.
Every phone is tall n skinny or foldable.
so i just hold onto my 7.2mate20x which is amazing still. but something less tall n top heavy n a little wider is appealing to atleast give a go.
I use the LG V60 with the Dual Screen case on at all times and it's 95% of the same experiance as the Duo. It has active pen support with shortcuts, can spam accross all the apps (with an additional app form Play Store called LG Wide view) - Outlook is optimized the same way as on the Duo but Gmail is not even though that is supported to spam by default. It's thicker put less wide than the Duo 2 but no camera bump because the case levels it out so there is no gap when using it in "phone mode". Battery life is a bit better than Duo 2 but not by much. Performance is almost the same as it has the SD 865 with 8 GB RAM but it has a headphone jack with Quad deck built in and SD card support and wireless charging.
i think Surface Duo is a good idea but the software needs to catch up to support dual screens better and larger screens.. some Android apps cannot scale up when used on tablet or larger screen.

Hey Brett, great video. I love the Duo 2 and all the multitasking points you made. The quality of the Duo 2 is phenomenal. I really hope to see a Duo 3. The launch of the Pixel Fold is no better than the Galaxy Fold. Microsoft needs to stick with what they started. Imagine the Neo? I'm in whenever it comes out.
Hello I have the Surface Duo 1 on Android 12 do you have any problems with keeping Video Files on your device because after I put a few Movies on my device they mysteriously disappear after a few days but my Music Files are still there.
If they made this a mini pc with windows 11 installed and a phone they would sell loads

I absolutely loved the idea of the duo. I had the first one and hoped the second would be the same form factor but better software and updates. But they ended up slapping on a camera bump and in my opinion ruined the slim design. I used it more for productivity and less as a phone so I understand the need for a better camera if it's your daily device.
I’ve been wanting one since the first one came out but my worries come from the support aspect of it the unknown of how long Microsoft would support it with security and software updates have they committed to anything like that?

I returned my duo because of my frustration with Bluetooth and my headset.
I've just won one of these through work, and I'm watching all the reviews for one to work out whether to use it or sell. As usual, your review has convinced me to keep it and make the switch from my Sony Xperia 1 II to a Duo. It's a bit of a crazy idea you're right, but you've convinced me!

How it work with samsung galaxy watch?
Yes, the Duo can do stuff like Teams and whiteboard in unison, but WFH/office, I have better alternatives. I can use my laptop for Teams and my tablet for the whiteboard with no compromises. So the Duo is giving a compromised alternative to doing it with two devices. For me, professionalism trumps the convenience of say the Duo in other scenarios.
I am all for innovation, but only if it makes my life easier, and so far the Duo is more supporting MS rather than for an anything revolutionary. I have heard nothing of a Duo3 yet, apart that we will not see it in 2022. I assume that is due to the poor take up of the current models, and/or hopefully a total revamp/rethink. It really does need just one screen as having no gap gives you a sensible full-screen option for added value and usability. Maybe a Windows-based OS, as that would make it different and more marketable?
ATM the Duo is extremly niche and although has some interest, it is far from compelling at the list release price to be competitive as a productivity device. Maybe I am old school but I like using the apex device for each purpose my workload requires, so a great smartphone, a tablet with attachable keyboard and pen, and a laptop that is fast with a slick typing experience. I do not want one device that does none of these well just to save me carrying a case for my tablet and laptop. Thanks!

I still think LG does not get enough credit for having a very affordable, dual screen solution with the v60 and G8X etc.... Especially once they added active Wacom stylus support. And unlike the duo, it has a fully fleshed out stylus pen suite.
It doesn't have any of the compromises with cameras or NFT or wireless charging etc.... It's not apples to apples, and it doesn't have the ridiculously thin and impressive design, but that's a compromise as well in terms of durability. And the best part is you can remove the dual screen and have a proper flagship device on its own right. With a headphone jack that can drive up to 600 ohms

I turned the page animation (in Kindle app) off immediately. Also, you can use volume up and down buttons to go a page back or forward.

I love your work. It's great. Expensive too, as I tend to get swept away and buy the stuff you endorse. I like your value equation and agree with your observations on the Duo2. I love mine. I don't use all of its features, mainly the camera the most. I've got a few phones and consider them like shoes; horses for courses and all that. Have a few, rather than run with one. It's a better experience. I carry two usually. A Kogan X something at the moment (for dropping off ladders and losing in the garden) and the Duo2 - only brought out for special moments. It's ritually the sole resident of my left pocket. I like to hold off from doing anything at all of any real significance until I get to my desktop so the Duo never gets a workout. I find it's thirsty for power and work with it, keeping it topped up at every opportunity. Thanks again for another installment. Awesome stuff
Just discovered today, that my less than 2 1/2 year old duo 2 is non-repairable, my battery is not lasting like it did, so tried opening a service & repair at Microsoft, and they no longer service the phone!, so I called them and they say they only replace phones, that they are non serviceable! and that they don't have units anymore! and I ask her so if I wanted a battery replacement how much would have cost me, and the lady says since its out of warranty the same as a new phone, but again we don't have stock. WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THIS COMPANY! so much e-waste and such a loss, ($1700 !) a perfectly working phone, to the trash because they designed this device to not be repairable, you cant even find batteries anywhere!. Please bring this up to the attention of people!
Also surface duo phones can be purchase at reasonable prices if you don't mind buying them used.
The problem with the duo is that it's Microsoft's only android phone. Not only did they have to build the dual screen tech they also needed to build an Android phone. I have the z fold 3 and it's standing on the shoulders of giants (Note, tab and s series) so all the phone stuff they've already mastered.
Yeah and not only that but using Android was the last minute decision for them. The biggest weakness of the device is it's undercooked launcher. If the duo launcher was up to feature parity with the Microsoft launcher on other Android devices, it would be so much better.
I need a touchscreen mini-laptop with pen support that can also make calls.
For this reason, my $410US OG Duo is the best tech device I have ever purchased.
Why pay 3 or 4 times more money for a Z fold just to watch CZcams or NetFlix.
@@michaelcorcoran8768 I'm not saying they shouldn't add the customisations features but it's just fluff to me, same with heavily customised launchers and themes etc. that people apply on Android.
Samsung missed it with the front screen of the fold.. but the multitasking of the duo just feels better and quicker than fold 3

I’m sure they could make it work but my brain needs the 2 physical screens, emulated screens don’t have the same effect on me, even if iPad multitasking already does that pretty well
So I owned a surface duo 1 and absolutely loved it. Had no problems putting up with the bugs, however I had 2 show stoppers that forced me to go back to a traditional candy bar phone and for those of you with the surface duo 2, I’d like to get your thoughts. On my SD1, the plastic around the usb c port broke after 6 months of careful use to avoid that specific issue. The second was on Verizon’s network in the south of the US, my calls kept dropping for seemingly no reason. Have these issues been resolved in the last year or with the SD2?
I've heard a lot about the cracks on the USB port of the Duo 1. I haven't seen it in the 2. And here in Australia on Telstra I haven't had any call dropouts.
I have the first one too and don't get any dropped calls with T-Mobile. I previously had Verizon with a Samsung phone and all I got were dropped calls. Same with my wife. Verizon is the king of dropped calls.
There were several reports of broken USB on early models, but they must have fixed the issue because you don't hear about it any more. Microsoft will replace phones with this problem under warranty.
I had the cracked port after a year. Microsoft stepped up and refunded me which I applied to the Surface Duo 2. No worries about the port or connectivity on ATT

It's cool, but lack of SD card slot kills it for me. This apple-esque hatred for SD card slots must be eliminated.
I’m waiting for surface duo 3 without the phone bump
Been using the duo 2 for a month now and I must say, its the best android device to date for tech use, not for photography however. The camera is one thing lacking any wow factor.
One saving Grace that the Surface Duo 2 camera has over competition like the Fold is the shutter speed is way faster.
My problem(s) with the surface duo 2 is the areas it falls down.
1. Camera is very poor for the price
2. Battery life isn't quite where I want it to be
3. lack of wireless charging. This isn't something I'm willing to give up
I do kinda wish it had a small outer screen like the Razer. Just for checking and clearing notifications, toggling wifi, hotspot, pausing music, view finder for the camera etc. A minor gripe that isn't a deal breaker but would elevate the device.
The problem then becomes the alternatives have major flaws themselves. The Z Fold 3 has camera isn't amazing either and for whatever reason doesn't feel as nice to multitask on. Samung's very over aggressive power management killing apps and UI make me hesitate before you question price or discuss the durability of folding screens.
I think MS has a fantastic product and a form factor that has a lot to offer, they just fall short in typical the MS fashion for me. Either way the decision of my next phone (still using a galaxy note 8) could be another year away

@@honestbuiltperformance1819 The turning point for me was the USB charging port breaking on my note 8. Simply a cable wouldn't make proper contact taking quite a while to get it to start charging and even then it would charge slow or disconnect.
Now I'm pretty use to having a wireless charging pad near where I tend to set my device down. It's nice not to have to plug in a device then unplug it when something comes you need to respond to. Messing around with cables gets tiresome
Rapid charging has eliminated most of the need for wireless charging but honestly, even as a backup charging method I wouldn't go without it. It esentially got me 2 more years out of my note before a bigger issue finally killed it
@@Javadamutt I can replace a charging port in 10 minutes so that's a non issue for me, also 99 percent of the time charging port just needs to be cleaned and not replaced. Rapid wireless charging isn't as fast as the fast charging phones can achieve with a chord, I wouldnt say plugging in my phone has ever gotten tiresome lol that's a stretch. Just yeah, wireless charging is slower, so your phone is on the charger for longer, and due to its convenience you hardly ever let your phone drain its battery o ih t completely (not good for battery life expectancy) theres so many negatives with it I just dont thin kthe convenience factor is worth it or that I would ever rule out purchasing a phone because it doesnt have it
@@honestbuiltperformance1819 I'm going to call BS. The note 8 back is pretty much guaranteed to shatter meaning it will take significantly longer than 10mins more likely closer to an hour.
Yes I have attempted to clean it and no that did not solve the problem. Either way with work and family it is not something I have the time to invest in and taking it to samsung is a £200+ repair because they "are held at gunpoint to replace the battery".
The scenario and use I outlined means that rapid charging isn't really a concern be it wireless or not. By slow charging wirelessly throughout the day my battery rarely got below 40 and I never charged it beyond 90 (usually aimed for low 80's). Battery health is hardly a concern tbh. Be it fast or slow charging, not letting it drop etc barely makes a difference in the long run. After 5 years the phone battery, if not the phone itself will need replaced.
I outlines above why it is convenient and why its a feature I'm not going to forgo both for ease of use that fits my lifestyle as well as a backup that has prevented my phone being ewaste before it needed to and essentially saved me £200+ in repair fees.
@@Javadamutt all samsung phones backs are glass, unless it's a budget phone or an fe version it has a glass back, I can get them off without cracking them in 60 seconds or less. Would you like me to make a video doing so just for you? Just because you, or other people, cant repair a phone quickly doesnt mean its impossible lmao .
I love my duo, but the Bluetooth is horrible. Cannot use it outside. Only indoors or cuts in and out.
Hmm, I won't say I haven't had problems, but Bluetooth is working pretty good for me with Surface Headphones 2, ePos 460T and my Ford Ranger.

Yeah I just have to reiterate it seems like you're only comparing your gains with the surface Duo versus candy bar style phones. What about folding phones? Or even still what about the LG v30 or v40? They came with an extra display and they didn't have all the software bugs?
Samsung Fold is great, but more of an expandable candy bar than a dual screen. LG V60 is not available in Australia. This is a different approach for a different market. There are plenty of professional CZcamsrs who do nothing but review phones. We are completely not interested in doing that. We use the Duo 2 for work (not YouTubing). I think our perspective is pretty clear if you look at our channel.
it's true all but the two surface duo aren't bad reviews for be innovation or different on the contrary that's the good reviews are, the bad for this devices are the software related bad support from Microsoft and a lot of bugs that really p¡ss off regular use.
If only this devices came with windows OS would be and incredible devices.

My Duo 2 is crack for me... I can NOT go back to a "traditional" cookie cutter device... I had a Duo 1 for a short period before the 2 was released.
I guess my only question would be how is that different than what you would get with say the Samsung fold 4? And it seems like the fold four would give you a much better software experience definitely better cameras that built-in S pen and so on.
Personally I use PS22 ultra I've not even converted to a folding phone or a dual screen phone. I love the idea of the Microsoft surface Duo. And I really wanted one but I don't think the law of innovation is an excuse for Microsoft to put out a device that isn't fully functional. I hear you, at least to me it sounds like, you're making excuses for Microsoft's lack of execution on either the surface duo or surface Duo 2. But innovation doesn't necessarily have to equate to shitty software experience and bugs. Granted this is Microsoft's first attempt at a dual screen phone but they're not reinventing the wheel here. It's running on Android it's not even the first dual screen phone. And their software set up should be nearly identical to a folding phone. They just make a software partition for the two screens. I'd like to know what your thoughts are on that and if you think maybe you were a little bit biased soon as you're already a surface adopter or user? And do you really think the surface Duo can provide meaningful gains versus the fold four, enough to justify the bugs and other issues?
If they released the Surface Duo 2 today, we'd all be a lot happier. It's close to ready now, but it was not even close 8 months ago. I've been very clear in many videos about the faults and issues that I've had with the Duo 2... Perhaps you haven't taken in enough of our context yet. Yes, this is a very different device to the Fold (which is a great and much more polished device). The approach of the Duo 2 is uniquely targeted at getting things done (not just consumption) and it sets an interesting direction that the others do not.

this grandad has 1st generation of Microsoft surface duo 😳 ❤️ it no problems so quality reliable 👏 👌 perfect performance sadly much underrated hybrid smartphone product that's why i got one boxed like brand new for cheap price unlike Microsoft surface duo 2 if by some miracle you can find one over here won't be cheap hard to find here in Britain sadly not much demand.
