I think this does have a possible utility for the office environment. When I was working in a physical office, I would have loved to have this device for all my meetings. It doesn't take up too much space, I can review an agenda on one side, write notes, or work with my project management software on the other side. I could see it being additionally the perfect device for a business lunch, big enough for accessing and sharing key documents and information, but not as challenging as everyone with laptops or even large tablets. If they ditch the cell phone capacity, and the camera tech, focus on Microsoft productivity (lower the price) maybe they could possibly champion this as a portable business tablet... the focus being on business....though I did enjoy seeing how it can be used as a video game console.
I definitely see the vision of this device as "future of work/office mobile computing"

I totally agree, it's more for business or for people like myself that doesn't do much picture taking but likes the option if I randomly need it and use it more for bills and such. I always have the aftershock bone conducting Bluetooth headset on for calls so rarely would I need to put it up to my ear. And let's face it phones or tablets have their own set of glitches, likes and dislikes and to often people expect devices to do it all like waving a magic wand and that just isn't realistic. Everyone is different so what one might love someone else might not. I think we need to look at it's main purpose and stop expecting the impossible. I've been a Samsung owner for a long time but with that said I don't like everything about it, it just is what it is. 🤷♀️

It's a Microsoft product, so it's really in beta until at least version 3.
I actually really like it. Get rid of the waterfall glass edge and go back to straight, plonk a flip3 style mini-screen on the front. The camera... honestly I'm wondering if they couldn't just move the current array in Duo 2 into the bezel where the selfie camera resides (and replace it). Don't see why you need both a front-facing and a rear facing camera array when you have two screens that can face opposing directions. Surely you can just use one screen when taking the picture?
Do this for Duo 3, keep the price the same or less and I'd be tempted.
I remember the original surface had it’s flaws for a couple of versions before it became a decent product. I owned the original surface pro and it had the thickest bezels, the mic was placed right next to the exhaust fans, it got insanely hot and the kickstand was terrible. It may be the same way with this thing, although I’m not as confident in this.
I think if they include a very good glass screen protector, so you could leave it open. And do the cameras like you said. They could get costs down and make it more seemless.

No regrets, can't imagine ever going back to just a regular slab phone.
The little quality of life improvements, it's unapologetic approach towards multi tasking bring, really make it a unique device to use.

A lot of the time people are designated onto a project like this against their will and then they are given a very demanding timeframe. They had at best a year to significantly improve a device that was under spec and completely different to anything before it in microsoft's catalogue. Forcing people who didn't even want to work on it to now have to use it is just cruel
My first time hearing Marques say: “I haven’t had it for very long” for any product he reviewed on.
I understand he gets twice as many views for making a video about a product 10 minutes after he opens the package and then later in an actual, conclusive review, but this is really just disingenuous. Mr. Mobile really does it the best way: one definitive video.

Just received my first Surface Duo today. I have owned am iPhone, various Samsung and Nokia Android devices and even a few Windows phones. The Duo 2 is amazing and I have loved using it more than any phone I have had in a long time. I was nervous after watching so many negative reviews, but I must say that the reviewers haven't done this device justice: it is a superb experience.
Same here. Loving mine so far. About two weeks into owning mine now. Very glad I switched to one. I get that it's not for everyone but it suits my use case.
Battery lasts all day, easily.
Software updates have fixed the Duo 99%.

@@abcdelicious4420 Still a massive fan, even after all this time. I had to swap back to a Galaxy device for short time and I genuinely missed the two screens. While it's not for everyone, it is a superb piece of tech to own. Best of luck with the decision-making.
I feel like a lunatic whenever I say this but I adore the concept here. if I had the money to throw around on something like this I'd love to have one. just the thought of being able to do split-screen productivity tasks with that much screen real estate sold me the moment I saw it.

The best thing about my Surface Duo was the perfect alignment of the two sides when it was closed or folded. I did not care about the camera because I rarely take pictures. I can safely say that if the first version were like this one, I would not purchase it. I also think that the $1400 price mark was too high. I bought the first phone for $1000 because I already knew that most people would not be willing to purchase a device like it. Basically, I knew that the price was going to come down. I assure anyone who wants this phone as well that the price of this one will not stay at $1400 either.

The camera bump completely ruins the surface duo 2. The 360 hinge is essential. They should have instead installed one very high quality camera on the front and none on the back.

I think it is a great concept to have separate dual screens, but I can feel the annoying and impractical for everyday usage.
Which is why the LG V60 is superior because it has the detachable dual-screen case along with a superior aspect ratio for browsing websites and watching movies.

I really, really like the idea behind this device. The dual screen implementation is a neat idea and allows for some functionality candy bar and foldable phones don't have.
It just can't complete with a Note or S series because they have had 10 years to perfect the UI and feature library. It also doesn't have a great form factor and the original was difficult to use for that reason.
I feel like this phone's form factor is more geared toward someone looking for a work phone and just need to multitask well and use it for business applications. The changes they made make it geared more for the general public and what they'd expect.
That's my use case. I wanted a faster Duo 1 with NFC and less buggy software.
Caving to the whole "every phone needs massive cameras" shtick is annoying.
I firmly believe this is Microsofts portable outlook and teams machine. Like that is what it is really for. Which to me makes the whole "no usability when closed" thing like a huge feature to me. With a work phone I'd like to be able to close it and be done with it when I'm not supposed to be working.
You might as well buy samsung's fold 3 if you're looking for a smartphone/tablet like experience. Definitely way better than what microsoft is trying to do here.
@@not1goodname Yea, but with terrible camera's, bad microphone and unreliable software it's a big NO. Just get a nice phone with a case (built-in stand maybe) and call it a day. At least that's 100% reliable and everything about it will be awesome.

Pro: (over other folding devices): two real screens no worries of soft scratchy screen
Con: hate the wrap hiding pixels in the middle, I'd rather more of a gap with no missing pixels
I have Z Fold 2 and inner screen isn't as bad as everyone is saying, sure glass is better, but I wouldn't say it's bad if you used screen protector (non glass ofc) on any other phone it is almost the same. The small scratches kind of self heal, idk about large ones since I don't have any, any scratches at all. It seems to be more reflective/ the screen isn't as bright. Oh and I feel confident pressing hard on it, I don't press hard since there is no reason at all but if you want to you can.

I like this form factor. I carry two phones from two different service providers. I would love it is they could be joined together like this and share storage and apps but assign mobile services to each screen.
Also, I don't think the interface needs to span across both screens. The point of having two screens like this would be using two apps at once. So like a PDF or a video on one and a text editor or email on the other. Also, it would be neat to have it display two document pages at once like a book.
And of course if turned sideways one screen could become a keyboard or virtual controller.
I like this idea, but they need to stop trying to make it something it isn't.
i was just thinking about something similar but with android user profiles where you could have your work user open on one screen and then your normal user on the other.

I feel like they should've made the selfie camera on the inside an actual decent camera. That way it's usable during video calls and you can use it as the main camera while having no camera bump at the outside
Not having a back camera wasn’t the issue, it already has a massive bevel on the tops and bottoms, I know there is issues when you put a chunky selfie in there but that’s what needed to happen

I just love the Microsoft logo on the first one it looks so smooth
So I loved the hardware of the duo and I thought opening it every time would be cool until I got the fold 3 and realized I how usable it is closed. I have been taking tons of photos on vacation and when you are moving and running as round you want a quick couple pictures then back in the pocket. Then open it and go thought everything when you get to a resting place.
I think the duo needs a dedicated companion if not a third screen a watch as capable as an apple watch.
If Microsoft added an in-housing stylus and software for it, that would probably justify the price a bit and overshadow some of it's shortcomings.
Honestly, I think they should consider making a solo screen device instead. Design-wise, I think they get a lot more right than wrong, and I think a standard body phone with the Surface’s aluminum body would be pretty sick.

Yeah, I'd love Surface Phone. Their laptops look so cool. And combo with Windows (like ios&macos) would be something I've always wished for. I know it's available on samsung phones now, but it's just not as seamless as apple version. Let's just hope they won't overdesign it like they did with Surface Duo/Surface Studio Laptop.

Honestly, I really like the first Duo's design. I'm a little torn on whether or not the outside should also have a screen. I feel like if it did that it's way more vulnerable. One perk of the Duo is that you really don't need a case to protect it. You don't need to worry about scratches or dropping it, and that's some good piece of mind. On the other hand, all the things you mentioned MK. Perhaps, if it did have a screen, maybe just a small one like the Galaxy ZFlip 3. Or maybe even a TFT looking reader that gives essential/programmable info. Similar to the dot view on the HTC One M8 dot case? It was cool and could do some cool things. Idk?! Also, with the Duo 3, if they could keep the Duo 1's design but integrate 3 great cameras where the first selfie camera was and don't put any on the outside, I think that would be better.

Yes, I think they should stay true to that. Many people are willing to sacrifice worse camera quality for the form factor. But software needs to be more seemless.

I think if they replace some of those rear camera modules with LiDAR and somehow brought back a new version of windows phone OS or ran some sort of windows, then I think the size and set up is perfect for work situations. The same way iPads have been industrialized I think this could be a good company computer/phone for a lot of industries.
i actually like the passport design. i dont often take pictures so the inconvenience wouldnt bother me, but i feel like the dealbreaker is the seam in the display.

i think a fix for the form factor would be a centre hinge that could both open and close the same as the phone does now but also rotate to flip one of the displays around (the camera side) to enable another positon with one wide of the one open to a screen and the other facing inwards with the camera facing out, meaning the second screen would be folded against the back of the other to protect it while in that position and allow the camera to face forward unobstructed , aka an engineers worst nightmare

if you put a decent camera on the inside, it can be a webcam, and be in the right position in comfortable photo taking mode (folded open).
maybe some swipe gestures on the rounded edges when closed to dismiss, or trigger dictation replies for messages? (wouldn't save the lack of closed functionality though)
That "cool keyboard flip accessory" was for the Surface Neo, which got postponed to posterity by MS for who knows what reasons
You can't fit a decent camera on the inside. 🤷 It's either a camera bump or a camera as utterly dogshit as the OG Duo's. There is no in-between thanks to physics. Microsoft should have just stuck to their original guns that the Duo wasn't a phone but a productivity device (as the name "Surface" implies), and that if you wanted nice photos then carry around a small phone or point-&-shoot for that. But instead, Microsoft bent to market pressure from idiots who were never even going to realistically consider buying a Duo in the first place!
I feel like this form factor is really only useful as a novelty e-reader and an e-reader only. Every other feature just seems like it's at odds with it.

Get rid of the external camera. Put in a better selfie. And get the price down to 1k and I'd snap one up. This would be great as a work phone. Some companies require you to have a company phone. If I have to I would want something that is for productivity. I would have my regular phone for cameras.
Yeah, it seems they really need to go all in on business and productivity and skip the multicamera- this is why they weren't calling it a phone- its a device. Still, its a tough problem, because I still would want a good enough camera. Hopefully they think of something that really works well and fix the bugs.

I have a love/hate relationship with my phone. Having had the phone for two weeks there are times it’s infuriated me (namely when I’m watching CZcams on my Chromecast in the kitchen and want to change channels, having to keep ‘opening’ the phone drives you mad (a exterior screen would be welcomed here) but then at the same time I’m bombarded with notifications through the day, having a device which literally ‘shuts’ them out is bliss! Also the multitasking in genius and having moved back to iPhone for a couple of days there’s times I now scream at it (as doing two things simultaneously is impossible) and there are times this is REALLY useful.
Excellent video which shows also how the camera bump hits the back screen. I wonder why the bottom part is unsupported now.. can you squeeze and break it easily now when having a phone call?

From someone who uses the original SD as daily driver, I actually enjoy the experience of opening such a sleek device everytime i use the phone. With the huge cam bump, however, the sleekness is pretty much gone.
So ya, now we have a device that is neither here nor there; neither appealing to purists nor pragmatists. Oh well ...

One of the things that never really clicked for me until I owned a Z Fold 3, is how much I would rely on the outside screen to do regular smartphone things. It's about the flexibility of being able to use it unfolded when I want to. There are some days that I never open up to the big screen - and that's okay.
Knowing all of this, now, I can completely understand from a physical convenience perspective, that the Surface Duo 2 can be a pain to use, because you HAVE to open it up to use it, even if you don't want to use both screens. Combine that with the admittedly poor camera placement, and it becomes a very cumbersome daily driver for most people. Microsoft marketed the first Duo as less of a phone replacement, and more as a business-minded tablet supplement, and I think it works fine for that, but the tradeoffs make it a difficult pill to swallow for $1500. The software bugs, though, even if the phone was otherwise perfect, is unacceptable at just about any price point these days, let alone at an eye-watering $1500.

Misses the point about this Surface Duo 2, it is in the title Duo - two screens. It is not a fold device like Samsungs - getting one bigger screen.
Surface Duo 1 and 2 is not built to split text/pictures between the 2 screens - so you can work with more than 1 application on the device with ease on both screens.
MSFT not using the forehead space for the entire upgraded camera was an epic miss. The pass port device that docks to your home system is the future. MSFT you are so close..... don't zune...away! you almost have the world beater.

I don't think it was originally designed to be viewed with both screen as one. More so like a book. A separate screen on the left and a separate on the right. Its not a Galaxy Fold design. I think people are using it for not what it was intended. E.g you wouldnt play a game using both screens for say a first person shooter as the reticle would not be able to be viewed properly.

@@dman1848 I completely agree. This review is very unfair. The review comes from an angle that this is targeted to the market of people looking for a cool camera/phone with a single large screen. The market for this device is not the galaxy fold users. This is a productivity tool for business professionals. It is meant for multi-tasking, not watching movies or other content across one-large screen. I have a duo 1 and I love it. Is it sometimes not-so-zippy with its response? Sure. But so is my iPhone 13 max pro that I use for my personal stuff. I use my duo as a secondary/ business device. And my iPhone for everything else. Greatest move I have made.

In terms of a "device" this is a really cool system. In terms of a phone, it's terrible. If this was your main device, there are far too many short comings for daily use.
How do you even make calls with this thing? I mean, how do you hold it?
It's not a phone. It's a digital booklet with telephony. It needs to be a good digital booklet first, camera and phone last.

I personally think that the larger version of this, the Neo, was a far better idea. The ability to have a laptop or a dualscreen monitor set-up on the go with a magnetic wireless keyboard is super appealing. As for in a phone, it just seems cumbersome! The camera don't fit, it's too wide for a pocket, and the whole thing appears indecisive.
Surface phone was always my dream: full windows x86 programs in your pocket. Now I don't know why I would ever need that. Folding devices are all rubbish. If I want a larger screen I just switch to a surface or laptop.
I can only see a future of your phone being so powerful that it's your entire computer and it connects to different sized screens.
I agree, if they're trying to sell dual screen as a tool for productivity, it makes more sense to do it with a mini laptop with an actual keyboard.

Sadly, you captured a lot of Microsoft's product woes in a nutshell: We made it objectively better and somehow it's still worse. I'm a fan of MSFT, and I wish they would work on the cohesiveness of all their products, not just the sum of their parts.

I feel like you're missing the point. It's a productivity device, a phone you can multi task on. Judging it as a game boy isn't the way to go. Also, try reading in vertical mode so the hinge underlines where you're reading.
Fantastic 2nd phone or work phone . I love mine , its primary use has been using elgato obs software and watching the twitch chat .
They should ditch the outside cameras and have great "selfie " cameras, so it can fold nice and have fast photoshooting.

I really liked the design of the first duo. I think it has a price and immage issue. MS should have kept the design sleek and targeted Business customers as a second device.

I already have the Fold 4 but I got an unlocked brand new duo for $250 and I just couldn't pass it up. I have to admit I like it more than I thought I would. The numerous updates have made a big difference from when it first came out. I'm using it as my daily driver for now and it's actually running just fine. Now that I already have t he fold I'd probably choose it but if I had bought this before I probably would have never bought the fold.
FACTS I have a Surface Duo 2 and Fold 3 and I really only use the Fold for games because of the higher refresh rate... the camera quality on the Duo 2 isn't even all that different from the Fold.

Would be cool to have the 3rd (or 1st) screen on the outside, access your reading material for your book, magazine, or comic, and it shows the cover on the front. Then when you open it like a book there are pages that you swipe.
I feel like this is a folding mini-tablet that you can call with. Seems more of a professional tool, but without the professional tools because you don't get full functionality with the apps.

I really like this form, i just feel that it needs a Windows OS version that sync smoothly with a laptop/pc so that I have another small like laptop. Whatever I change on the duo gets changed on my main laptop/pc.

This Duo has potential imho, specially for professional use. I preferred the sleek form factor from the first but apart from that the second it's really good. I mean, I use my phone camera like once a month.
That would be game-changing.
I honestly think they may have to make one side just a bit thicker than the other, make the cameras flush, and add a little 1/3 preview screen on the outside- effectively making it a 3-screen device. The profile wouldn't be quite as thin, but you might be able to jam a lot more into it and still end up with a really dope device.
A note, is that Microsoft used better glass on the inside than on the outside of the Duo 2 so setting it down with a screen down isn't as volatile than you would expect. Edit: An outside screen may be useful, but given the use case for Surface Duo I don't think it is necessary. Stuff like spanning apps, I find is better vertically, like scrolling a long email or web page or forcing the keyboard to the bottom screen vs attempting to span horizontally. There are a few bugs still that need to be fixed, but I have not seen the touch issues that you saw.
First thing I thought about when I saw that camera bump was it preventing the device from closing back to back like it did before. Surprised they didn't go with a motorized setup or just upgrading the cameras before to keep that aesthetic. I really wanted this thing to work. Such an interesting form factor.
It seems like they've made Duo 1.5 here, it's got new hardware inside and the camera, but they must know that the bolt-on bump ruins the whole thing they were going for. They've released it now as is to keep the brand relevant and try to avoid it being called a failure, while a team works overtime on the next version with cameras better incorporated into the flat design.

Nice upgrade. I think they need to shift the logo up and create a screen . Since the phone is flip they can make it a bit thinker and create a motorised camera that pop's up when needed.
I'm so into the idea of the form factor. I personally am worried about the screen's on most foldable phones creasing. I just wish this device worked

In my view whilst it was never sensible to brand the first one as "not a phone", it is definitely the case that the Duos are not for everyone and fit a certain use profile. And I think that's fine - provided the business case works out if the market for it is relatively small.
It almost has a slight feel of a blackberry, business/executive niche group. The black colour more so than the white. I'm a Mental Health Nurse on the wards and need a phone to take notes on, I'm really unsure to get the z fold 3 or the duo 2. I really do like the duo 2, but samsung looks the more practical. I can't decide because my contracts up in November and whichever one I get ill be keeping for 2 years
Still hope they continue making newer version of this phone. I wouldn't use this as a personal phone but would be perfect as a work phone.

Honestly I think if they dropped the phone aspect and made it more as a mini tablet it might actually work better. Especially the original duo's design without the camera.
Remove the phone, give it Wacom EMR compatibility, have the original duo's flatness, make it more affordable... I could see it giving Samsung and Apple a run for their money when it comes to notebook and sketchbook replacement devices. Especially if the had a version, possibly the Surface Neo, that was around the size of two iPad Mini's stuck together. So folded it would match the iPad Mini but it could unfold to have the second screen function. I could see that being really handy for note taking and sketching.
Heck, the duo in this form could even work great if they had a good eReader function where each screen displayed a page and it felt a bit more like reading a physical book.
Right and there aren't many good small tables with strong screens, and refresh ratios. Yes I would consider getting it as small tablet for half of its current price and no camera bump.

damn here is a wonderful idea, e-ink display foldable like this. You can switch between normal and spread mode without giving up on space. Hell now I am wondering why the e-ink manufacturers did not think about it yet.
I understand your comment but To be honest, the tablet format for an e reader is the best format for it. Being able to close it like a book wouldn't really add any benefits to the reading experience.
The kindle voyager has the best shape so far in my opinion. It has all the thickness and weight on one side, and its super thin on the other side. That form factor is better than both; holding a book or holding a tablet because the weight is distributed in a way that its easier to hold than a book.

I would have loved this phone a 5-7 years ago with the limitations of folding screens and just having the biggest phone to show off. For 2021, this phone is the epitome of inconvenience.
Wow. Microsoft still has a long way to go to improve this device. It's not even a competition with other foldable phones. Yet they have money to burn to keep making Duo in future generations.
Hello . Please take another look at the surface 202. The updates have been fantastic and I recently made up my daily driver, from my iPhone 12 Pro Max. Once you start with the dual screens, as opposed to a single screen or a folding screen it's quite impressive of what you can accomplish. And it's very fun too. Please consider another review. Thanks
I really, really wanted to like this thing. I'm an attorney, my firm uses Surface tablets for trials and hearings, and of course we use Office for everything. OneNote in particular is something that is enormously useful. So I really liked the idea of a Surface phone with two screens, because it seems like it would be a super great productivity device that would integrate perfectly with the rest of my firm's tech ecosystem. The Surface tablets are amazing and were a huge upgrade over the iPads we used to use, for our specific use case. But all the little quality of life issues that this device has is going to keep me with Samsung. The fact that it doesn't fold flat with the screen open in particular is a huge deal breaker for me, especially because there's no outside screen. I think if there was an outside screen it wouldn't be a big deal, but if I can't have it be flat in my pocket and still be able to glance at my messages, then it's a no-go.
I think the surface duo 3 will have that 3rd front screen and fix some of those other little problems so we can buy it lol

Microsoft said for the first Duo, "this is now a Phone". The Duo has been treated as a Surface device first, and an Android smartphone second.
They have the Surface side of it down (you didn't mention Surface Pen works with it and Surface Slim Pen 2 magnet attaches to the side), but need to work on the 'phone' parts of it.

I really wish they thought of making the hinge stick up higher when folded backwards, so then when it sat on the camera it wouldn't be crooked and off like that, it would sit properly flush and in that extra gap space in between next to the camera could be where the pen magnetizes to be hidden and concealed and just overall better.
Edit: they should also put a top half screen on the front so it can stay closed and be able to use it without having a full screen on the outside that could break, or too small of one to actually do anything on, instead you'd have a half screen that lets you fully do things without opening it
I never saw the original Duo as a normal smartphone. It seemed more like a video call multi-tasked, hence the one selfie cam, where you can have a call going on one screen and full other apps on the other screen. For that purpose it was built pretty much to be exactly all it needed to be the first time.
I had the first one at launch and have used it since. I haven't had any of those issues you described. Not at least since maybe the first couple weeks after launch, when all the finger commands an responsive glitches were fixed up. Crazy the difference in experiences we've had, but what do I know, I've only used it as my daily driver every single day.

i recently got the surface duo 1 for the much reduced price. honestly, i love it. it's my secondary device next to my iphone 12 pro max. i rarely span apps across screens, more for using two apps at the same time. this isn't a foldable tablet, but more of a device with 2 screens. it's definitely not worth the full price tag for either models. seems like the 2 has the same small bugs at the 1. but overall the duo does exactly what i need it for, so i'm pretty happy with it. why can't it read external usb drives though?? i might be missing something, but haven't been successful.
I think a little mini screen somewhere around the top couldve pulled this device all together as well as some software changes to the camera.
