You are my hero! When the Duo 2 came out I told myself that the only way I would upgrade is if I first convinced myself that I could remove the external camera. You have shown that it is possible and just as easy/hard as I imagined. Now I just need to justify the expense and effort...
Haha thanks! It has its pros and cons but got me it was worth it!
Now please a video of to how to add rear caemera on the Duo 1 🎉
This is all we ever wanted! Microsoft take notes! Great job. 😂🔥🔥
Haha thanks! And agreed!
They can't. Their duo 2 can't lay down flat to take notes comfortably.
@@2010ngojo ba-dum-tss! 😂😂
Awesome work!
Thank you!
Very interesting! Had a couple anxiety spikes watching this!!
Hahaha i can totally understand! I was almost sure I'd crack the glass 😅
A modular camera bump would be ideal, plug and play when you need it!
I'd love that. I was really excited about project Ara back in the day.
Awesome 😎👍
Thanks!!
this is kind of amazing. I always did feel that for the quality of the duo 2 camera the sacrifice to form wasn't all too worth it. With this you also reduced some weight, may be closer to the original duo now?
It's still heavier than the OG (especially since I put a copper heatsink into the hole) but it feels less awkward to hold for some reason. I'm satisfied!
Fascinating. I wonder if it occurred to Microsoft that a cameraless duo makes the perfect secondary device.
Yeah, i wish they had done a wifi only camera bump less duo 2 at a reasonable price point. Would've been perfect!
Like watching a thriller movie when you're opening the back case. I'd definitely do that too if i got the skill. I hate camera bump
Haha yes it was scary! Glad it worked out though.
Fully agreed about the bump. It's unnecessary.
Hey manufacturers, pay attention to this.
I'll give Microsoft credit for not soldering or gluing the camera down! As far as smartphone repairs go this was fairly easy to do.
Looool the glass cutting ✂️ LOOOOL I'm sure you can to it in water or something if they are super sharp
Or a saw or something, probably. Thought it wouldn't hurt if it didn't work... Turned out funny i think
Great work Phil! Yeah the duo 2 camera bump was what kept me with my trusty duo 1. Looks like the duo 2 is now a viable option for me. If for some reason you take off the skins in the future I'd love to hear if the duo 2 closes completely. Thanks again!
Yeah it does! I took them off and used a duo 1 skin that was thinner and it closes all the way.
@@PhilKnall Awesome :) thanks Phil
@@PhilKnall did the duo 1 skin exactly fit on the duo 2? I'm planning to do the opposite (duo 2 skin on duo 1. As duo 1 skin is not available here). Do you think this will fit?
The duo 1 skin has to be trimmed a tiny bit around the hinge corners (a millimeter or less) so the 2 skin will be slightly small but barely noticeable. The height and corner radius are exactly the same. The only annoying thing will be the camera cutout. Btw sopiguard and XtremeSkins make duo1 skins.
@@PhilKnall ok great to know. I thought about the camera cut out also. So I'm thinking to buy the front skin twice without the back skin. Hope that will work.
Great video. I have a question about the power button actuator, since mine sometimes would get stuck on depressed position. Do you think liquid alcohol could actually seep thru from the external button area to able to get rid of dirt/grim? Thank you
Hm, that's a tough one. If it's between the frame and the button, possibly. I don't know if it would do it if it's deeper in. Try to put small drops into the gap between case and button and press it a few times?
That camera bump is the bane of my existence! The other camera is flush...why does the outer camera have to have a bump? 😡
I think with the higher quality optics and bigger sensor expected from a "main" camera it's just physics that it doesn't fit in a super slim body... The inside camera is very very poor. But I do feel it's excessive. Thus my little "surgery" 😂
This is so cool. I would suck at doing this, I would shake and break something
I wasn't sure I wouldn't to be honest! Got lucky 😅
Cool👍
Thanks!
Great video. Did the surface duo 1 skin fit on the duo 2? I'm actually planning to do the opposite. Here in India a duo1 skin is not available. Only the duo 2 skin is available. So I'm thinking to buy one and try it out on my duo 1.
Thanks! The Duo 1 skin has to be trimmed a tiny bit (1mm or so) around the hinge cutouts, so if you use a Duo 2 skin it will be slightly small around that area. But the width and round corners are perfect, I think you'll barely notice.
great video, i think i would have gotten 2 of the skins and placed the sides with the windows logo on both faces to hide the camera cutout.
Haha yeah I'd love that! If i can find one that's completely broken except for that... I wish they sold the parts!
interesting! But the small MOFT stand on the camera side might solve the problem too without losing the camera!
Interesting suggestion! Other people have also suggested a 3d printed case. Might work!
Great mod! I'd also never use a back camera if I had the Duo 2
Could it have been possible to put the old camera glass back in the hole of the back glass? There could be some kind of stiff backing plastic + electrical tape to hold it in place so that it doesn't fall into the depths of the Duo
Would be possible, but it's slightly smaller than the hole, and i think a different thickness than the backing glass so might be tough to get it flat. I've also been considering filling it in with liquid resin or the like after applying a skin next time i take it off.
Just intrested to see if you know; could you use another front plate in place of the back plate that has the massive hole where the camera was? They appear to be the same dimensions, just one doesnt have the camera bump (and flashlight holepunch) and the other does
I've considered that and yes i do agree it should be possible. If only we could get them as parts... I'd love to try it.
Btw i haven't been able to get the flashlight to work so you would lose nothing with that suggestion.
Was there a reason you didn't heat up the metal plate a bit, to loosen the adhesive? Or would that damage the glass backing?
I didn't realize there was that much adhesive, and i wanted to finish without waking up my wife 😅 heating it with a hair dryer would most likely have helped!
@@PhilKnall just put in hot water, faster and easier and no noise.
@@rollandelliott true!
How did you change the front of the phone? That's sick,
You mean the white covering? It's a skin by dbrand!
Nice, I'm in a similar boat. Preferring the SD1 so I can pair my Olympus to it and utilise the massive screen space to edit, so no need for SD2 cameras.
The SD1 is just such a well build design. If it had the SD2's screen aspect ratio and no pen lag I'd go back in a heartbeat!
@@PhilKnall An SD2 with no camera bump would definitely suit me best too. Like you say, better screen size, plus it's a bit more powerful. Just don't have much use of phone cameras when I've got a GM5 and OM-1 😉
Haha i feel ya, i have my "proper" cameras too. The phone (pixel 5 in my case) comes out a lot when I'm on the go with the kids and need to shoot one handed.
Does anyone know where to find that narrow double sided tape used at 14:51? I could use it to tape my Surface Laptop Studio back together.
amazon! Just search for "smartphone repair tape"
Just curious. Is the protective glass for the rear camera overlayed on the metal frame?
There's a metal frame with cutouts for the cameras, and the glass is glued on top of it. you can get a look at the parts around 9:45.
@@PhilKnall I appreciate the response. Now, I know how to proceed, once I receive the tempered glass protector. I was, only able to find it from an Australian merchant. So, still waiting for it to be delivered.
I ended up somehow breaking the glass. I planned on using the protector glass to replass the broken glass.
Good luck! The glue is very stubborn, might be a good idea to warm it up.
Hi, I consider to buy DUO 2, may I a question?
Is it possible to accept a call with closed surface duo 2? and make a speech?
or do I have to talk with the opened surface?
How long it has endurance of the battery with normal use?
Thanks
Stepan
I'm probably not the best person to ask this, as I've never used it as my primary phone. As there's no outside display i think you have to open it. The intended use would be to flip back the second screen so it's almost the size of a regular phone.
Battery life has been good! Have yet to kill it.
@@PhilKnall Thanks
cool
Thanks!
Do you mind checking to see if Zoom will work? Thank you very much for making this video!
Thanks for the comment! Yep, zoom defaulted to the selfie camera and worked just fine!
@@PhilKnall thank you so much! I'll be upgrading from my Duo 1 asap!
Hope you love it!
Hello! Can you please tell me besides the camera and flashlight, is everything else working?
Yes everything is fine. If i fold into phone mode and use the screen that doesn't have the selfie camera, i can use the selfie camera just like with the sd1. But i need to open the camera app twice.
Thank you for your quick response! I found one that is used, but the glass cover is completely missing. Wonder if that would mean some connectors are missing and some functionality is lost. I don't care about the camera...
Thanks a lot for making this video and for taking the time to answer!
@@samuilpavlov i don't think any of the parts would go missing as they're mostly fairly strongly bonded together, but I'd definitely check whether the buttons are there if it's that side. There's also images that Microsoft has published of the insides that you should be able through Google, so maybe compare against that.
Thank you! You are like a CZcams Super Hero! Answers immediately, speaks Japanese etc.
@@samuilpavlov haha thanks! I do what I can. Hope your duo works out!
Thanks for the tear down. Was wondering about the camera area at least the bump cover. Under the glass, my camera has a LOT of debris. Guess I won't be cleaning that out any time soon. LOL..
At any rate, like my direction for dealing with the camera bump instead. a LOT less drastic. Originally had printed a simple piece that extended the length of the phone of the thickness of the bump. Essentially this will keep the screen from flexing because the bump is at one corner. Next was like how you see in the video where the whole back was flush with the camera bump. only problem with this is that it made the phone thicker and heavier a bit. At this moment it's a combination of the case and bump extension. Less added weight and minimal thickness. aside from the Camera bump. Also added a pen holder. (Second video)

czcams.com/video/aJ74UCNlbMQ/video.html
Thanks for the videos! I actually considered something similar, a 3d printed "extension" of the bump. But it would still have laid crooked on the table so i went ballistic on it lol. I'm so glad it worked out!
I could handle the Duo 2 camera bump, if the Glance Bar simply reoriented itself when the phone is laying cameras up. Kind of weird MS forces you to lay it on tables logo up.
Yeah, and also i use it flat on the table with both screens up, which is nigh impossible with the 2.
@@PhilKnall I use it propped open, like a little laptop.
@@chadwick626 that's how I use it most of the time when multitasking, with a video on top and a game on the bottom etc. Just prefer the full flat for pen notes.
It's such a great and versatile device.
Its not the skin that prevents sd2 closing all the way. Its just that the spring inside hinge designed not to close fully (like sd1) because of the camera bump exists in sd2.
It did close fully without the skin on though.
@@PhilKnall Have you tested?
@@enwsiths yes! Also depends on how well I glue it back together, I messed it up again after 😅
Why dont you buy a Duo back glass to replace the Duo 2 one?😅
The hinge cutouts are ever so slightly different. I use Duo 1 skins but always have to trim them a tad. (Also where are you seeing the glass for sale?)
I appreciate the effort, however why would you do this when you can just get the Duo instead? If it is about NFC then why not wear a smartwatch? Otherwise pretty neat guide.
I had an OG Duo and loved it but 1. bigger screen, particularly when you're reading comics it makes a big difference 2. pen lag is much less noticeable, and 3 just general performance is better. The OG would slow down noticeably when i was doing one of the bigger attacks in Fate Grand Order for example. Other than that the OG Duo is an amazing device!
Maybe they'll consider not putting a camera bump on the duo v3. Makes no sense if I want to lay the device down flat.
I'd love if we at least had a choice. They apparently considered a budget variant, I feel this would be one of the points where they could've saved that cost.
nice hack.. i just bought the duo 1 for a few hundred NEW. seemed a lot easier.
Yeah, i initially had both and kept the OG. But i missed the added speed and especially the screen aspect ratio - the display size for comics etc is night and day. But the OG Duo is an amazing device!
Awesome. I have a duo 2 and hate the camera bump. I've even been thinking of buying a cheap duo 1.
All this glass and adhesive.... a step backward. but we know phone companies purposefully make fragile and different devices to sell expensive repairs and new phones. bastards
Yup. I'm definitely more of a fan of metal or plastic backs. They should bring ceramic back!
@@PhilKnall welp, I did it.
I don't know how you kept your back glass intact. I absolutely destroyed by back glass!!!
I put a surface duo 1 skin over it that's holding it together lol.
Now that it can lay flat and fold flat, and slimmer in the pocket, I actually enjoy using it :D
@@rokko_hates_japan oh dang, sorry to hear about your back glass! But I'm glad you were able to fix it up. Enjoy!
I hate the bump on my duo 2. The camera sucks anyway. Most of us have 2 phones - The Duo is my mini tablet.
Yup, exactly the same here. Real misguided choice from MS to focus on that i think.
why not get a real tablet for much cheaper?
I have considered that, but I'm afraid i might shatter the screen when i fold it in half...
Why didn't you use design like otter box did? No camera bump, lays flat, still have the camera in tact.
That would've been an option! Actually hadn't seen that one. Looks like it adds quite a bit of bulk to the device though. Also sticks out in front beyond the screen which I don't appreciate.
Wasn't planning to use the camera ever so... 🤷♂️
If they had extended the bump down the length of the device then at least it would have solved the rocking problem.
I agree that would've been an improvement!
Would've been easier to purchase the Duo 1
Nah, sd2 has a significantly bigger screen when you're visit something in the right aspect ratio (comics for example), tangible performance updates, and less pen lag. It's better.
Sooo.. no more rear camera?? 🤔
Nope! I have a pixel 5 so i don't need it and prefer to have the slim, flat device :)
UMM...so lots of tampering to make it a surface duo 1 ?? why didn't you just get the first generation? i mean great job but all the recent updates to the software has made the first DUO extremely amazing in my opinion... to each their own i suppose good job none the less
Thanks for the comment! I agree the duo 1 is awesome, i have another video comparing them and at the time i actually chose the OG. i could probably live with the performance gap, but i prefer the screen aspect ratio on the 2 (comics for example display much larger) and pen input has less lag. Definitely depends on use case!
@@PhilKnall you did do a fantastic job though.. I always get nervous when I watch people break down such slim devices... Kind of exciting to watch 😊
@@mindlessanime haha i totally get it! I was half expecting to fracture the glass. Got lucky and nothing broke 😅
Guess you have no use for Cameras lol. I hope Duo 3 comes with Under glass camera. I bought the Duo 1, but returned it a week later, left screen went nuts, Green with lightning flashes. This devide only needs 2 cameras, 1 rear 1 front. Rear has to be ultrawide with Macro. Good quality camera with OIS. Front 4k video. These are not camera devices, more for business.
Exactly. Mine is my secondary device, and replaced a tablet. I have a pixel 5 too so i don't require the rear camera.
スゲー…解体良くできるな…
結構ヒヤヒヤしながらやりました(笑)新品だったらやらなかったお思います。

Why not just glueing a leather layer on the back levelling all the surface to that of the camera bumb, that would eliminate the rocking problem without eliminating the camera. For the full opening problem that might occur if you want to fold it completely, a bezel of the leather on the hinge side will reduce it. Anyways better have a fully working phone that opens at 98% than a phone with a broken camera.
Then you wouldn't be able to flip it back in phone mode the way you can with the first Duo. I think a lot of people miss that functionality and phone mode when you could flip it flat
That would have to be some thick leather!
Not saying it's perfect, but this solution works for my particular use case.
why is this even a video, you could have put title to i removed back camera to remove the bump
Because people (including me) are interested in what things look like on the inside and how to take apart and possibly fix them. You could just ask "why does CZcams exist"
Cool but why? You could get an iPad idk haha
I fear I'd break it when folding it in half... Also might brick it when flashing Android so not really that much easier.
@@PhilKnall you made me laugh so hard! hahahah
@@TaskerTech haha then i have achieved my goal 🤣
Tacky job, no offense… I wouldn’t just gotten someone who owns a 3d printer to help you out before laying a skin on it.
All good! Anything thicker than a skin will impede this device's functionality, but I did get some Duo 1 skins afterwards which cover the hole as well. I agree it looked bad with the Duo 2 skin.
It takes time and practice to find the best solution. This was an incredible job. I will be buying a Duo 2 to replace my 1, as soon as I find out if Zoom will open the front facing camera to make calls.
