    The main problem I have with the Duo 2 is the camera bump, the best thing about the Duo is how thin it is and how you can bend it right the way round flat. If I were Microsoft I'd copy the Nokia 9 camera design for the Duo 3, just use multiple small sensors to make a good image so you can have no bump. The reason why the Nokia 9 failed wasn't because it didn't work, but because SoCs at the time couldn't run all those sensors at once for video and it was slow to process.... But I bet modern SoCs could do that. Also photo computation has come a long way since, so I bet that would improve it too. I'd also make it so the middle part of the screen has no bezel, the screen goes edge to edge. Then have a hinge that can move horizontally as well slightly, so you can push the two screens together at at flat position.

    I look at these videos with a large dose of "so what". Voigtlander was perhaps Germany's supreme optics maker from the mid-1880s. It financially failed in i971, and all of its assets, including trade names, were acquired by Zeiss. While these companies were existent, these lens names had some meaning, in that "Planar", Tessar", "Skopar", and "Heliar", each described a particular type of lens design. Lenses so branded shared specific optical construction and performance. After the camera division of Zeiss failed, Cosina in Japan bought the legal rights to use the trademarks originated by Voigtlander. When such trade names are used by Cosina, they have no descriptive relationship to the prior Vogitlander products which used the same labels. If Coca Cola had purchased those trade names, we'd find "Heliar" pasted on bottles of sugar water in the supermarkets, and they would have about the same comparison value as here.

    I repaired exactly that shuttertype today. 2 things that could have made your life easier. 1. Reassamble the shutterblades in fully open position, so it has support from the shuttercasing, therefore just remove the spring from the shutterlever. 2. Remove the parts where the springs are standing out, it makes it so much easier. My shutter was stuck by one of the 3 screws at the backcoverring that secures the shutterleverring, the screw wasn't tightened and one of shutterblades got caught by it.

    Hi. What drive did you ultimately replace with and does it perform well without failure? Because I have the same issue with my Sabrent Rocket drive that I installed on my Surface 8 Pro. Also, you mentioned someone was able to fix the issue with a firmware upgrade… what do you mean by that?

    • @PhilKnall
      @PhilKnall Před 2 měsíci

      Hi, the Kioxia BG4 SSD shown in the video performed flawlessly so I never changed after that. Used it for several months, but I now no longer have this machine. The firmware update thing was something people mentioned in Reddit threads - some of them had issues upgrading the drive, but after updating to a certain build (normally via windows Update) they were able to use it. I can't verify this as I never encountered any problems in the first place.

    • @sg_atukr4247
      @sg_atukr4247 Před 2 měsíci

      @@PhilKnall Just spoke with a friend that is very good with computers, he said that potentially upgrading BIOS (like you mentioned in the video)could solve the issue with little effort. If that doesn't work and the problem continues, he said to open the cover and check if the SSD becomes hot to the point where it is not comfortable to keep a finger on it (usually this happens above 50celcius). If that is the case, it is probably the reason why manufacturer has placed the original SSD into a heatsink case... And, ultimately, if the heat explanation is not relevant, than most likely, we are looking at a corrupt or low quality SSD - which are common on Amazon and EBAY nowadays. In which case purchasing a replacement from a certified retailer would be the best solution.

    Very similar views here.. I even have the Surface Pro 8 that I'm selling now. I bought a $275 damaged m1 air a few weeks ago, it still worked but was a little inconsistent, I'm also a long time PC user.. never owned a mac, I bought this one because I didn't want to sink money into something I didnt think I'd like at all.. my 1st pc was a Packard Bell 486 from 1992'ish. This Macbook Air absolutely destroys any pc laptop I've ever owned in just about every way. I also installed Parallels and Windows 11 with no issues and it literally feels like I have a 2 in 1 device.. Windows runs better on it than on my SP8. It's absolutely crazy. The battery life is way better than any Laptop I've owned prior. I've owned several Microsoft Surface devices and design is great but the hardware ruins the experience with running hot.. fans.. inconsistency in whether it will have a charge when I start it.. and the slowdown when running on battery. The only thing I miss about my SP8 is the 120hz screen. I did occasionally like to use my SP8 as a tablet but it was so rare I don't think it will be something I'll miss.

      @PhilKnall Před 3 měsíci

      Yeah... The tablet, touch, and pen functionality are the ones I'll miss but as you said it's niche use. The sp8 was much heavier than my previous sp5, so I used it as a tablet much less.

    I switched to Mac from Windows. Fell in love with the Mac. Then the problems started, I loved my Mac so much I spent tons of time on it, therefore my wife complained. We eventually got divorced, and I eventually lost custody of my kids..... Still love my Mac though.

    Early 2021 my beloved Latitude E6420 fan/heatsink combo died again.. I didn’t wanna keep repairing a 12 year old computer and caved. In early 2021 if you had no budget and wanted to buy new.. that M1 MacBook Air was unreal. I’d never had a MacBook but I did have an iPhone and iPad. I had a thought.. “I’ll buy a base M1 MacBook Air as a placeholder til the 12th gen Intel stuff drops” cause at Best Buy with tax it was only $970 So, that was three years ago. I never did go buy another PC. This thing is miles nicer than what I was used to on a PC. The build quality too.. insane. I absolutely love this thing. I would rather have the M2 cause you get an extra 100 nits brightness and MagSafe but.. I can live without those things. On the M1 Air.. the screen and speakers and build are so much nicer than you’ll find on a comparable PC. And it’s insanely stable.

    I watched this because I'm always interested in people that switch to mac and their observations. I'm a 30 year+ IT verteran and I switched in 2014 just because I was sick and tired of Windows issues and fingerpoining between the application software providers and Microsoft. It was a change and a learning process. Enjoy your honeymoon period because it'll end soon. Just some things to watch for that you may never even notice until you have to: 1. If you have the option to import Pictures/Music and you're wedded to the Windows method of finding pictures in a file folder by date: don't put them in the catalog. Here's why: Apple's internal file structure seperates the metadata about the file from the actual content itself (I spent a few years as a Document Management system admin so I was a little familiar with the methodlogy going into it but I had no idea they implemented it). I hate to use this age old methodology - but it's like finding a book in the library... you have to use the card catalog. It's one of the reasons you can do file maintenance so fast and it makes it appear to be very fast.. but if you want to get the file out of your catalog you have to export it - which literally joins the metadata and content back together into a single file. I discovered this quite by accident. It's great if you use it as intended - it's how photos can create taxonomies by people, place, date,etc... but who has time for that? Rarely, but occasionally, the index gets corrupted and you need to rebuild... which is a long process. It also carries itself to other processes as well... which is what caused me to have problems in the first place.. dragging and dropping a file into a FAT32/NTFS file system can cause problems that I hope they've since fixed. You have the data but no metadata and some apps balk at opening it. It may be one of the reasons why you can't find an up arrow... I never gave it any thought. 2. Apple is a single machine/single user system. File sharing screws up their indexing... even multiple users on the same machine can have issues. I've been trying to get an inexpensive NAS set up and Apple makes it very difficult. Yeah, you can backup to a NAS device but two people can't access the same file at the same time. To me: it makes sense: Put all my music, pictures, video onto a single drive everyone can access. At least that was my intent. Not so easy.

    I transferred over to Macs when Windows 10/11 started integrating advertising into the start menu and taskbar. I don't mind paying the 'Apple tax' to remove those horrible ads. I have gotten used to MacOS over the last six months - the only thing I found very difficult was trying to use Pages & Numbers instead of Word, Excel etc. (and in the end I just signed up to M365 suite). I also have an iPhone so the integration of the whole ecosystem makes each part work better together. You just can't get a Windows laptop like the MacBook Air.

    I agree with the touch screen thing, but also... i know for a fact I'm faster at using the macbook touchpad. That thing is so darned accurate that once you've used it for a thousand hours... it's lightning fast and intuitive. That said... i'd like a tablet mode simply so i can disconnect the keyboard and use the screen a web/e-reader (in which case we'd need touch anyway). They have Ipad I suppose.... so really they should just let MacOS support ipad hardware.

    The Silicon Macs are fast...on MacOS only. Not sure that is a big plus. For anything else like Windows X86 or Linux, you got to run under emulation. Not so good. My concern relates to how Macs now swap to SSD when memory constrained. That doesn't sound like a good idea. You burn out that SSD you are up shit-creek. The Silicon Macs are great for youtubers who do video stuff. Apple was smart to target that crowd.

    You can resize the dock, it’s too big by default, I agree. You can also remap all the keys to be where you like in macOS. I remap the capslock key on all my macs. Scroll direction is a pain, but Bettermouse fixes that - several apps exist to fix this flaw. Window snap was patented by Microsoft I believe, which is perhaps why Apple don’t include it. Finder has “go to folder” off the menu, so as a power user you’ll appreciate that.

    Phil, thanks for your honest review. I thought your review was very peculiar. If you didn't explicitly say that you liked the performance and were sticking with the MBA M2, I would have thought that you hated the laptop. Really all your comments boil down to familiarity and lack of familiarity. I got my first Mac SE 37 years ago. If I have to use a Windows based computer, I am helpless. I can't launch an app, find a file, or anything. It is like visiting a foreign country where not only do I not speak the language, I can't read the writing. Your question: Command+Shift+G, then type "/" will bring you directly to your root directory. A lot of issues you complained about can be changed in various settings. Lastly, you didn't like the keyboard. Universally that is a feature most users single out for being fantastic Chacun à son goût.
