Tyland's line about how the battle between the Brackens and the Blackwoods was so devastating on both sides that he doesn't know if it can be called a victory is fantastic foreshadowing
Riverlands is always the kingdom that suffers the most when there is war. After the Dance, there was only scorched earth, orphans and widows. It is a miracle that the Tully have dominated without problem for centuries
From what I remember, it seems their vassals usually fare badly, but they themselves are usually fine, War of the Five Kings being the exception. They don't really seem to do much themselves. Frankly, they're kind of a waste of a House to me.
That’s mostly House Tully joined a little late during the war, whereas all their vassals have been picking sides from the start. Thus when when the dragons arrived, everyone who picked a side ended up getting an angry visit from the opposing dragon. And just like that, all the meddling vessels could no longer oppose House Tully, because they were all too weak to do so.
