This man is a class act. I met him years ago at a summer festival in Racine Wisconsin and he made time for anyone who wanted to meet him. He's not only a great guitarist but a great person as well
I agree 100%! It’s so refreshing to talk to a musician devoid of ego. He loves what he does and it shows.
And he is one hell of a guitar player!
I wished I had asked him about his bass playing. Saw the Genesis show last night in Cleveland and he is a beast on the bass!
Never knew he played with Gino Vannelli. It was great saw an old video, must have been 1979.awesome
Nice! My family is from north of Racine
He is very intelligent.
Daryl is something special, he doesn’t need the accolades but if you see him live, he is amazing. What a player and such a nice guy
I love every member of Genesis, past and present, but I have a special soft spot for Daryl.
Well, technically not a 'member' of Genesis, but unlike the other guys much more approachable. This was a good interview, I kept waiting for the obvious question of whether Darryl preferred Genesis when Steve Hackett was in it versus later:)
Saw him with Jean-Luc Ponty, Genesis and with his own band. Just great.
Daryl Stuermer is amazing.
Saw him in Buffalo, great show. And we all sang him happy birthday.
Same these shows never get old only we do
Always loved Daryl and Chester and all the guys….great interview 😜👍
Fantastic interview. Congratulations Thom. Darryl also played with Gino Vannelli, a great Canadian singer and musician, who had big worldwide hits in the 1970's and 1980's
Great interview, Daryl’s a legend!
Oh Boy ! I love this man ! What a great guitarist! 🎶🎵
Daryl has told some of the same stories before, years ago, word for word. His memory for detail after so many years is amazing!
14 years big ups
very interesting questions! and Daryl is absolutely a class act
I knew this was going to be good when you asked such a smart question about drummers. Great interview!
One song from Three Sides Live was recorded at the Savoy NYC 44th street between 6th and 7th ave. Venue is long gone. I'm actually on that record as an audience member. Waited/slept outside a full 24 hrs to be first row in front of Mike Rutherford's bass pedals. I was also a bike messenger just across the street from Savoy at the time. Here is the live venue list: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Sides_Live
Great interview. Daryl is such a fantastic musician.
Fabuleux guitariste !
Is there a nicer musician? Seems like a genuinely good guy, and a fantastic guitarist/bassist.
Kinda cool to hear his voice and talk.
Thank You. Great interview. I didn't realize the audience had such an impact on the players.
Sure does, especially if you catch one just staring at you
Great interview! Of course at the CNE in 1978 Max Webster and Brand X opened for Genesis. I was there!
That is cool!
Me too! A great triple-bill for sure!
Wow!!! 😀😀
Happy new year Cintre🎉🎉🎉
How are you?
Well, this was lovely and informative. Thank you very much.
So underrated
A perfect fit for the world's greatest band.
Well maybe a matter of opinion but pretty close
Exellent guitariste ! En concert en live il y avait le meme son que steve Hakett . Bravo à vous pour tout le travail avec Genesis !
Three Sides Live is mostly Nassau Coliseum New York 11/29/81 if I recall. I was there, first time I saw Genesis.
Excelente músico,
Magnífico guitarrista,
Como sempre impecável.🇧🇷
Amen!
Great Interview Thom, thanks!
I believe most of the three sides live was taken from nassau, savoy and birmingham. The fourth live side also features daryl on two tracks. Fountain of salmacis from the 78 tour and One from the vine from the 1980 duke tour.
Excellent work, Thom! 👍🏼
Lovely interview thanks
Looks like the video from 11/15 in Chicago! Was at that show, fantastic! Love Daryl!
I saw Daryl with Jon Luc Ponty at a community college, and Jon Luc was way late so Daryl played and it was pretty terrific. He had an Ovation Balladeer which caused me to buy one! Once Jon Luc got there it was even better! Big fan ever since. Just a great guitarist.
He is my best dream.
Excelente guitarrista saludos desde Chile 😮
Great interview!!!!!!
Thanks my friend!
Nice interview. I like Nic playing with Genesis, but I think that Phil used to be much better drummer. Much wilder and more colorful. For instance, the instrumental part of Firth Of Fifth. Phil used to be much more adventurous with the fills there. Nic plays basically just the time. So, I miss a little bit of that Phil´s fire.
Wow, I'm 4 months late to the party here! Great interview, Mr. Steurmer has had an amazing career, not just with Genesis, but also with other artists and a solo career. However, what takes the cake for me, are the incredible mid 70's JL Ponty LP's, especially Imaginary Voyage and Enigmatic Ocean. I was in college at the time, so much great music coming out at the time....this stuff was magic, brings back nostalgic, wistful memories, and DS's playing is just stellar. Hope to see him around sometime here in NC.
Thank you Thom for this superb interview with Daryl! I actually shouted "Yes!" when when you picked up Daryl's debut solo album Steppin' Out and showed it to Mr Stuermer. I first listened to this superb instrumental album on CD in the early 90s and it was my friend's compact disc, who was also a fan of Jean Luc Ponty.
Naturally I hunted for Steppin' Out and bought it twice (lost my first copy) and luckily found a replacement copy in a music store in Kuala Lumpur. I still listen to Steppin' Out in my car to this day and love every track in Daryl's album. Ironically I've never listened to Phil Collins' version of "I Don't Wanna Know" and when I finally got to, I felt it didn't have quite the punch of Daryl's instrumental version.
I wished that you had asked Daryl why Leland Sklar played bass on Steppin' Out since Daryl himself is an accomplished bass player and why he no longer plays the headstock-less Steinberger guitar with Genesis on The Way We Walk tour.
It's a long story but I first heard Firth of Fifth on TWWW (Vol 2), so I was exposed to Daryl's solo in that album before I managed to find Seconds Out CD a few years later.
Thanks so much Thom for this comprehensive interview as I've never heard Daryl also being asked about his Steppin' Out album! 😀🙏🏼
I really appreciate the long and thoughtful comments. This was a wonderful interview to be a part of, Daryl is such a nice guy and incredibly talented.
I am only speculating on Leland playing bass, but I remember reading an interview with Sammy Hagar where he mentioned he didn’t play any guitar on some of the Van Halen albums, even though he is a pretty good guitarist. Maybe Daryl just figured he had a better bass player at his disposal, or maybe those tracks were recorded live in the studio.
All guesses of course.
@@thomjennings8896 Interesting observations, Thom. I just remembered that Leland Sklar also plays with Daryl on Phil Collins' concert tours and perhaps he volunteered to become the session bass player for Steppin' Out. Sklar also played a 6 string bass on the album and you can hear the occasional lower register notes in some tracks.
I've never heard Daryl play a five or six string bass before and I guess he's more comfortable with a regular 4 string bass guitar. He could have done the bass parts by himself for the album, but decided to leave that to Leland, who has done countless session recordings with various artists.
On a side note, Yngwie Malmsteen played the bass parts for his debut solo album Rising Force. Malmsteen may be the neo classical guitar virtuoso that he is, but he approached the bass instrument like a guitar player, rather than a bassist. Personally I find Yngwie's bass playing and sound in his debut album to be cringeworthy. 🙄
Mike Rutherford on the other hand, plays bass as a bassist and the 6 and 12 string guitars as a guitarist. Daryl was a natural choice to replace Steve Hackett as he blended in nicely with Genesis and can also play Mike's guitar parts, not just Steve's. What I find most interesting about Daryl is that he gets to play Mike's guitar solos on songs from the Duke album and switches to bass on Genesis material from Abacab onwards.
Some reviewers stated that Daryl plays the guitar only for Steve's parts on tour, but this is not true.
And there's also one additional instrument that Daryl also handles when playing live with Genesis that most people don't really notice - the Moog Taurus bass pedal, which Mike Rutherford traditionally plays when Steve was still in the band. You may have seen Daryl step on the Moog Taurus pedals while performing the Abacab song live (like on the Three Sides Live DVD) while playing the bass guitar and that is some serious multi tasking! 😀
Great guitar player, I saw Max Webster live way back in 1979 when they supported Rush on their UK tour.
…and this deserves so many more views. Perhaps changing the title to include Genesis, Phil Collins and the year will give it a boost?
So down to earth..As a 17 year old guitarist, I first heard Daryl on Enigmatic Ocean by Jean Luc Ponty in 1980 and was blown away by his energy and phrasing...fantastic playing both rhythm/lead guitar a wonderful contrast to Allan Holdsworth on that record, it's what got me into Jazz Fusion.
Love you Daryl !!!
Happy new year Perry 🎉🎉🎉
How are you?
I went down to Shank Hall (Milwaukee) in late Summer of ‘92 to see Steve Hackett. This was shortly after Genesis played Camp Randall Stadium a couple months before. And lo and behold there’s Daryl hanging out in the back watching Hackett. Went up and completely interrupted his conversation just to tell him his “Firth of Fifth” solo was the best ever. I was such a moron but had to tell him! Hehe…
What a classy guy. Genesis made a great decision with Daryl.
Love him.He is a gentleman.
Saw Genesis here in Cleveland 11-30 and still outstanding.
Wow!!! 😀😀
Happy new year @Happy🎉🎉🎉
How are you?
Yes, really hard to think this is likely the last show .. all those years of memories
One of my favourite guitarists
He plays Pure Class musictest ...
Easy Lover Solo still stands the test of time.
I was one of those with tears in my eyes xx
Manchester 2021
When I saw them last week I was getting more than a bit emotional. Such a powerful catalogue and it is music that is even better in a live setting.
Yes I cried my eyes out
Great interview
As I knew him my life has changed.I love him.
❤❤❤ I can't forget him.
I love it.
It’s obvious he’s a nice guy. I saw the first Last Domino ? Show in Montreal. Fantastic.
I am quite in love with this man
I've always admired Daryl. Not just as a guitarist, but as a person. I could tell, that Daryl has so much respect for Mike. Some people comment that Daryl upstaged Mike, as a guitarist, but I tend to believe that Daryl has his place and Mike did as well. Funny that I had an affection for John-Luc-Ponty, long before I ever knew the band's connections with Genesis. My first introduction to Genesis was by my Marine Corps barracks roommate in 1978. I can appreciate the complex work of Genesis while Peter was lead singer, but I never liked his voice quality. Phil was a much smoother vocal and just seemed more natural. Most people refer to Genesis as Progressive Rock, but I have always referred to the band as "precision rock". That is because it seemed to me that every note was played exact and in it's place. Almost like a classical music concert, in a rock setting. Every musician who ever played in the band was a consummate professional and the talent was just overflowing. Genesis: My favorite band of all time, of all genre's.
He is my ideal.I love him
Thanks for this.
Leland ‘s influence brought mr here
Three Sides Live was recorded in New York at Nassau And The Savoy. In the Cage is from Wembley Stadium. One for the vine in London. Fountain of Salamicis. They do not know where it was recorded. But I am assuming somewhere in Europe.
Excellent 🎸player
Something Happened On The Way To Heaven solo is ace.
He plays well in Genesis but the most important thing he is high intelligent man.
I'm in love with him.
Love
I miss him.
I've always considered Daryl and Chester as part and parcel of Genesis,
I know Nick is good but would have been nice to see Chester on this last tour, considering his been part of the touring Genesis
My dream is to meet him.
You luck man you!!!
Daryl can fucking shred
Kin Legend
Have you ever. Met Ray Wilson?
Have you ever met Ray Wilson?
Luv ya Dazza !
I guess Daryl doesn’t get a suite on this tour. Just a king leisure at the Ramada
Definitely check out Max Webster, then Kim Mitchell!
Ray Wilson got kneecapped by the group’s culture and fear of the unknown. The fact that this album is basically blacklisted today tells you all you need to know. I enjoyed Ray’s work on Calling All Stations and if I can speak some heresy I think that album is far better than We Can’t Dance.
Along with Genesis, who were sort of 'adopted canadians', every canadian of my older brothers age and then mine, had that Max Webster album. There was a lot of really great 'uniquely canadian' music back then because it was actually a law for a while that radio stations had to play a certain amount of canadian content. Kim Mitchel then went on to become famous for 'patio lanterns' which was a pop tune. But take a look at that cover-a balding dude in spandex. Those days are gone for good I think, musically its bad, fashion wise its good.
But is that his hotel room? YOu'd think genesis could afford a better hotel than that. Come to the east coast, we'll put you up in style. We just can't afford the tickets to the show:)
You had me at “spandex.” Which album is that?
23:28 Oh, I see. 😎
When Stuermer said they moved on from Chester Thompson, they could have moved on from Daryl and brought Hackett back. (I know, Hackett has his own band.)
Sweetbottom!!!!
Nic is very solid and basic...and heavier...but what we grew to like about genesis was the more intracit drumming and improvising....but it is the last domino...and bravo they pulled it off *
Thom, help me understand. Apologies in advance, on some sort of non-capitalistc plane. You have 87 subscribers. What is Daryl's drive to do this interview?
I’m a huge Gino Vannelli fan and did not realize Daryl was the guitarist, there were some great playing on those albums such as Appaloosa. Love the Go album from Daryl, and those arpeggios from heaven, I am constantly amazed by your playing and musicianship, thank you for sharing 🎸. Found you again on Pandora
New York I think they took most of it from.
You're correct. I think they recorded both audio and video in the New York leg of that tour. Nassau coliseum and the Savoy club I believe
What nobody realises is that over years you can't keep living in a hotel.
You need a life at home. These guys are getting old.
Bless them for keeping going.
Is it just me or does anyone else think “Down and Out” is an odd choice for an audition. :)
Not really. It was the strongest of their new songs. They stopped doing it live after a few shows because Chester had trouble with it.
You’d think they’d be staying in nicer hotels.
Daryl watches CNN?!
Daryl has that sorta British look… that’s why they picked him 😂😂 jk jk
Worse thing genesis ever did was Ray Wilson
I thought Ray did a good job.
Have you heard Invisible Touch?
@@diegomorales8616 yes, I play drums, so that Album for me was with cool drum parts, Living For Ever, is good
But Ray singing no son and follow you follow me, was kin to torture
@@thecawdsquad875he can certainly sing, but just not Genesis, I could of done a better job
tony and mike dropped that ball. I didn't even touch that album for a listen when I heard a song on the radio.
Did you just insult the man by saying a coat tails Hall of Fame inductee ? Poor taste
Not an insult at all. He is not inducted as a member of Genesis, what I said was a way of saying he is part of the band but not an official inductee. It was a compliment.
