    My understanding gleaned from an interview with Tommy Shaw was that Dennis wanted to take the band in a more showy costume Kilroy kind of direction/production. Dennis wrote all the sappy stuff that Tommy and the rest of the band did not enjoy as much as Dennis. They were always a dichotomy of musical direction. Personally I liked the more rockin' aspect of Styx music....Renegade, Blue Collar man....

      your understanding is based on what lies shaw and young have spread. after kilroy there was edge of the century with no so called costumes and two huge comeback torus in 96 and 97 without any of the same. kilroy was one album. deyoung turned shaws coustic ballad in to a rocker therby making shaw the big rocker. what rockers did shaw write on kilroy 0 on PT she cares?

      That doesn't match up to what happened at the time. The KWH porject was a one off project. The others in the band, especially JY agreed to do the project as long as the next album would go back to the types of albums they had been doing as well as Dennis agreeing to do a "Greatest Hits" stadium tour to follow their next project. All of these past issues Tommy and JY cite regarding their choice to replace Dennis never came up when they were doing the '96/'97 tours.

    Although I had been listening to Styx since their debut my first Styx Concert was the 'Cornerstone' Tour. It was a great concert but as far as the album was concerned even though it had the #1 hit 'Babe' I still thought the album itself was a let down coming off of the previous 2 albums, 'Grand Illusion' & 'Pieces of Eight'. The Song 'First Time' was at the time when I first heard it & is still to me a god-awful song from Dennis DeYoung and I still dislike it to this day. I'll be bold and say it's one of their worst songs that they ever recorded much like IMO 'Love', Touchin', Squeezin' by Journey is their worse ever recorded song. But, that same year I saw Foreigner and to be honest, they blew Styx away as far as a Concert. But, that's me at that time and from what I can remember. Great Drummers of all time - Neal Peart (Rush), Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater)

    JC quit John was too ill and retired dying months later. deyoung was recording and album with shaw and young and asked for 6 months to recover and they replaced him. please end these comparisons of apples to apples they are not. deyoung has tried for years to arrange one last tour for the fans but shaw always says he just wants to be happy and the fans do not matter only himself. why is he the only one you have never interviewed? if shaw wanted it it would be so young doesn't matter. there is no equal blame and remember your favorite cornerstone record would not have been recorded without deyoung's leadership. young and their manager objected to boat on the river but not first time. interesting. todd would not be the drummer without deyoung's insistence because young wanted his drummer Kenny. every story has 2 sides except this one styx which has had at least 4. 3 by styx and deyoung only one. your fantasy polaroid moment has always been in shaw's hands. sorry thom i posted this in the wrong post

Now I know they are entire bands not just reuniting with one member. I wanted the same with Peter cetera and Chicago. I think they did actually talk and things didn’t go well. Steve Perry and journey reunited for the hall induction only. So it can happen. I’ve seen Styx a few times and unfortunately it was all after dennis left. Yeah, same key but distinct vocal styles. Dennis’ voice is a freak of nature, and it never deteriorated. I live near the Canadian border so I already knew Gowan, I think that makes a difference. Gowan is not quite a mimic like the Foreigner or Journey guys, but he isn't like Dio singing Ozzy tunes or Hagar sing Roth tunes, he's somewhere in the middle.

  • @83Roboto

    I agree with your opinion on Babe. The reason the current version of Styx doesn't perform it is due to the personal nature of the song to DeYoung. As to your comments about First Time, actually DeYoung and Shaw were not on the same page as to it being the follow up single to Babe. That is what caused a rift between band members which led to DeYoung actually being briefly fired from the band in '79. It seems to me the current Styx adding more DeYoung material to their set list is due them running out of other material to freshen up their set list. The have been consistently touring every year since '99. Add to that DeYoung's contributions to the band represent 7 of their 8 top ten hits.

    I must admit I didn't watch this video yet, but I saw the headline and have seem RMO's vids. Nobody talks about this one aspect of the Styx relationship, but Dennis DeYoung's inspiration for most of his music, his wife, has been known to interfere a lot with the workings of the band. She's basically Styx's Yoko. The guys may not have as big an issue with DDY as people think, but I believe they are trying to take the high road and not call out his wife's BS.

    Anytime I comment I try to just offer my opinion. For Styx, yes I love the original version of the band since I've been listening to Styx since their debut album and my favorite album to this day is still 'Equinox'. Now, do I enjoy the current incarnation of the band, not so much. I think a lot of the flavor of Styx has left the band. When you have to have an outside writer (even though he's now a part of the band) come in and help you out along with Tommy, then I question the band where they've always pretty much written their own material, all members included. Not so much with 'The Mission' & 'Crash of The Crown'. While I enjoyed 'The Mission' somewhat with 'Gone Gone Gone' being the most Styx sounding song out of those 2 albums 'Crash of the Crown' just never did it for me. I think what got me was from what I read that JY & Tommy Shaw would never do another concept album, but yet they did with 'The Mission'. Regardless, the debate will go on forever. No one will ever know for sure what really happened when the band imploded other than the band members themselves and as is normal with human behavior you always have a tendency to spin the story your way. I think JY & Tommy have said more negative things concerning Dennis than the other way around but at the end of the day they should count their blessings with Dennis since they're on stage playing Dennis penned tunes and still reaping the benefits from those tunes that Dennis created. At this point, the riff is too big between those 3 that I don't think it will ever be mended. And once JY (and Chuck when he does play) leaves the band there will not be any Original members left in Styx. As far as the Real Music Observer and his turning off Comments, don't agree with that at all. Unfair to the viewer.

      Equinox is an amazing album, and it always made me wonder if Styx still would have been as popular if JC had stayed in the band and Tommy never joined-or at least somewhat popular. I thought Man of Miracles was pretty solid too,

    • @gkirms
      @gkirms Před měsícem

      @@thomjennings8896 I think that they started coming into their own with 'Equinox'. It would have been interesting to see what their next album would have been if JC had stayed and not sure if some of the songs from 'Crystal Ball' maybe were already written prior to JC leaving. But, I think the band really found its groove when Tommy joined especially with 'Grand Illusion'. But one could say that Tommy made the band but also broke the band much like Steve Perry in Journey did.
