An important life lesson here - no matter who you are or how old you are, if you're going on a job interview, be prepared. Daryl took the time to learn how to play the Genesis songs before going to audition for the band, and that made an impression. Whether you are interviewing for a job with an insurance company or a rock band, learn as much as you can, be prepared and show up on time.

I've been a Daryl fan since 1975 when he played with Jean-Luc Ponty on the Aurora album. His work on subsequent albums, such as the classic Enigmatic Ocean, is among the best guitar playing in the jazz fusion genre.
Daryl mentions how he didn't play with any effects until he joined Genesis and that's something that immediately stood out to me from his work on JLP albums. He played so fast and so fluid, but without any delay or echo.
Any guitar player will tell you that it's not easy to play very fast lines with simply a guitar plugged into an amp. An overdrive pedal and slight delay helps to mask any imperfections in the player's technique. Daryl mastered the art of fast, clean playing and he's one of the very best to ever pull it off.

@@RickCT2000 "manically classical “ lol, the pieces he played on were meant to be played in that way especially FoF , less is more with that song. What I did like that Daryl did was on live versions of in the cage ( medleys) where his fusion style actually suited that song perfectly because they played faster tempo versions from 1980 onwards. Steves style in the early days suited Genesis perfectly though that’s why they took him on.

My Marine Corps barracks roommate first introduced me to Genesis in 1978. I believe the very first album I heard was the "Seconds Out' live album. For that reason, I never did care that much for the older stuff with Peter Gabriel. But that very first listen to Genesis, had me hooked. I was an amateur drummer myself and was just enamored by having two drum kits playing at the same time. Even though it was known as "progressive rock", my own name for the style was "precision rock". Because it seemed that every musician was a master with their instrument and every note, every beat was exactly in the right place and the right time. It was very complicated stuff; which invites a lot of improv to happen. However, it seemed to me that it was scripted. Speaking just for me; there were times on the Seconds Out album that I was feeling almost a spiritual experience. The euphoria was so powerful; especially listening through high quality headphones, where the various stereo placements in the sound field were so pronounced.

I offered to help him and his band mates unload their van but he said that we got this and thanks for the offer. As we set up he was just another guy on stage. He and his band came over from Milwaukee to my hometown, Madison, and was doing a three piece show. I don't know how many shows they did but I was lucky to work and mix them that one night. I saw Genesis at Aberdeen in 1980 on their 'Duke' tour, and I was a bit worried about how Daryl & Chester would fit in to the band live. I was a huge Hackett fan and I wasn't really convinced that Daryl could deliver the same level of exciting and powerful guitar playing that I was expecting. Well, that evening on the 25th April was one of the best nights of my life! The band were fantastic, the setlist was a fan's dream, but Daryl was the big surprise. He knew every note of every song, he played exactly the right style and level for each song and (importantly for me at least) he aced all the Hackett highlights stuff that I was worried about. Both Daryl and Chester were great, they just fit right in and both contributed to the full 'Genesis' live sound. Thank you Daryl!

I first saw Daryl at The Roxy, he and Jen Luc Ponty, just the two of them, playing acoustic instruments. Daryl on a 6-string acoustic and JLP on a standard violin. They weren't even plugged in (just mic'd), no effects, no reverb/delay/loopers... just two extraordinary musicians exploring the possibilities of music and taking us with them.
I wonder how Daryl felt about Phil asking Tim Pierce to be the guitarist for the Testify tour? (Tim, who is a studio hack, politely declined).
I first saw Chester with Frank Zappa, then with Larry Carlton at the 42-seat Baked Potato (Abe, Sr. on bass). I had seen the TOTT tour with Bruford, and he didn't really fit in. When I saw the W&W / Seconds Out tour Chester blew everyone away (Taylor Hawkins described that record as "the drummer's bible").
So when they showed up at the Greek in LA for ATTWT with both Chester and Daryl, I was in heaven. I continued to go to every Genesis show (since SEBTP) until We Can't Dance. Phil's voice finally got to me (pinch your nose and sing, "Throwin' it all away...").

I can’t even describe how cool I thought Daryl was as a kid watching Genesis/Phil Collins videos growing up. To this day at age 37, when I watch the light hit him and he rings out the open chord of in the air tonight on that Torino red Clapton strat… ultimate badass. The stance, the look, the focus… he’s the guy nobody would expect that makes my top five favorite guitarists. Sure the others are way more famous and likely more important to their bands, etc…. But to me, he’s as cool as it gets. Thank you Daryl for great memories.

Having watched this interview and the one with Chester, it seems that the reality is that both Phil and Mike picked people that could mimic existing recording parts perfectly. It was just a coincidence that they both happened to be Americans with jazz background. And that's why they kept both Daryl and Chester purely as sidemen the whole time.

I remember when Phil introduced Daryl and Chester at Madison Square Garden in 78. I have it on a bootleg CD. It was their first tour with Genesis and my first Genesis concert. That was the iconic concert that Peter showed up for the encore. At the end of the show I remember thinking those two guys did great. I already knew Chester was great from his work with Frank Zappa. This is gonna work. Phil's first two solo albums are excellent. My favorites of his solo works. I think Mike is so extremely underrated as a guitarist and bassist. And Tony Banks is the genius behind their progressive rock sound. I prefer them prog rock. Tony's "Fading Lights" is beautiful and I don't think it's a coincidence it's the last song on the last album... Daryl had some huge shoes to fill and he did and does it well. You can see in this interview why he is so well liked by the band. He seems like a "real" humble nice guy. My only complaint is I really wish he'd of stuck to the program on the guitar solo on "Firth of Fifth" I understand he wanted to make it his own per say but that solo is pure perfection as Steve wrote it to be and should have been left as is. That's all I have to say on that subject. I'll be seeing Daryl with Genesis in two and half weeks at The Garden. Where their live shows started for me is where it seems it will end. The venue every band dreams of playing and every fan wants to see their favorite bands.

About his comments on replacing Steve Hackett, I think everyone agrees he did a great job in joining Genesis. Where there may be divisions amongs fans is about the solo of Firth of Fifth. While I prefer how Steve is doing it, the fact of the matter is Firth of Fith became part of a medley that was very energetic in live shows, and this is a great example where Darryl had to adapt this solo to also make it more energetic. Otherwise, it would have felt out of place in the medley.

I saw Daryl on the 78 tour and he was an excellent choice though we don't know who the other candidates were. To his credit, Daryl didn't try to be a "Steve Hackett replacement" and he did service to the songs. He is a good bassist also which gave Mike a chance to play more guitar. I remember Daryl played really great solo at the end of The Lady Lies. I was surprised to see Daryl the next year in 79 when he toured with Gino Vannelli.

I truly wish that post Gabriel/Hackett fans would get over the fact that they are no longer in the band and Genesis survived without having their influence in their music. Phil and the guys did a fantastic job afterwards including having Daryl in the band who is a brilliant guitarist and made all concerts awesome. Daryl has played with Genesis for 44 years, and to be in a band is some achievement and certainly worthy of our loyalty. Steve Hackett left - period. His loss not Genesis’s, they survived for the better.

    • @TJKoch91

I wouldn't say it was a loss for Steve, he quit for a reason. Once he left he had the time to make some pretty fantastic music on his own. I think every member of Genesis was so creative and talented that both Peter and Steve ended up in a place where they felt stifled with there not being enough room for what they were creating combined with what Mike, Tony, and Phil were creating. I'm grateful that Steve is still out there playing AMAZING live versions of the older Genesis material along with his solo work. His shows are fantastic. I've also met Daryl (we're both from the Milwaukee area) and he's a great guy and amazing guitar player. I have a couple of his solo albums in my library as well. I love both Steve's and Daryl's playing. I'm glad that Steve and Peter left because we ended up with more fantastic music from both of them AND Genesis in the long run.

I wish they would too. You know you used post wrong in that sentence. Because a post Gabriel/Hackett fan is you.
I used to be one, before I knew of the earlier stuff. But I truly wish the post Gabriel/Hackett fans would realize that the band was just not as interesting or artistic after Gabriel/Hackett left. They did some good songs, and they made millions. But like bands like Journey, and heart, they went from progressive, interesting music, to pop. And they stopped making records in 1992. The one in 1997 without Phil doesn't even count. They toured, but their most dedicated fans came to hear the early stuff. Like the Eagles, like Heart. The kind of band that Genesis became, is only acceptable to people that really like pop/ radio friendly music anyway.

Glad to hear Daryl and Steve actually get along quite well. In an alternate reality I like to think of Steve's GTR working out and he really did get a revolving door of Brian Mays, Jeff Becks, or Neil Schons, but it would be absolutely delicious if he got Daryl in there and then have them do some twin leads on some Genesis tracks, or pursue more of the jazz fusion direction. Some really interesting possibilities all around. Really need to follow their careers more; it's been a great ride thus far.
