Oh my god Doug. He’s such a legendary, iconic prog rock musician !
🎉🎉🎉 I'm in for a treat! A lifelong fan of Steve Hackett and Genesis! ❤
Doug, what a wonderful interview. Hackett is such a brilliant, yet kind and gentle man. Thank you for asking him a unique set of questions that he's never been asked before. I met him once and he is everything that he appears to be on stage and in interviews.
My idol. Met Steve on Spectral Mornings tour in Bristol England. He truly is such an all round nice and very pleasant person, always has time for his fans. Looking forward to this album and seeing him on tour later this year in Bristol. I think he is a very underrated musician and writer. Jealous of you Doug, great interview and very interesting
We see him every time we can. Legend. What a musician.
Nice to hear an interview from a musician’s point of view. I didn’t realise Steve was quite so immersed in classical music. Great stuff. Thank you Doug!
He's said that songs he wrote or co-wrote like "Horizons," from *Foxtrot* and "After the Ordeal, from 'Selling England' were based on Bach pieces.
"Were they making it up as they went along?- It doesn't look like jazz to me". Ha ha!
Mr. Hackett is a living legend! And he's still publishing great music. He looks marvelous at 74!
Love the new LP, his guitar playing is exemplary, the writing and arranging presents many diverse sounds and musical moods in the true progressive form.
I’ve been to a Steve Hackett show in São Paulo in 2015. What an experience to see this man & band alive playing its own classics + Genesis landmarks. He’s of a kind of special artists, above judgements, polemics or any kind of distraction but music. Excellent interview, long life both Steve & Doug.
Thanks Doug! I love Steve Hackett so much, his music, Steve as a person. Great interview, especially the special guest star of Jo's hand at the end. LOL
Fucken A! What a surprise. Thank you for this Mr. Helvering.
Im happy to see You are moving upwards in the musical genre Doug! Steve is one of a kind!
I rejoice in the Lord.
Brilliant! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐➕ I SO enjoyed that! I suspect you were surprised at the extent of the classical influence in his music? Although perhaps not, given your observations in previous videos. I was. Booked to see Steve and the band on the Lamb Highlights tour in October. I think my seventh Hackett concert, and they just get better! Can't wait. Thanks once again Doug.
DOUG,,, awesome interview with truly a modern master , and genuinely nice guy !!!!
Great interview. I saw Steve in Atlanta last October. Amazing concert!
Saw Steve and his band touring alongside Renaissance some years back in Albany at The Egg. I knew Genesis music really well but didn't know anything about Steve. Since then, I've grown to appreciate both Steve's original music and his Genesis interpretations. In my case, Steve was correct to say he gets more support as he gets older. Between the internet educating us more beyond just what's on the recordings we know, learning to branch out from old favorites like Genesis to other projects like Steve Hackett's, and an older audience that yearns to embrace and appreciate their past influences into the present and future, Steve Hackett truly gets more and more support the older he gets, and he deserves it
"Every Day" should be Steve Hackett Day! Thanks, Doug. I'm waiting for my copy to arrive tomorrow.
A generous and brillant artist! Thanks for this interview Doug.😊
My wife of 19 years died in 2011. Some nine or ten months later I had a dream that wasn't a dream. It was as real and as physical as anything in our waking world. In it my late wife came to and knocked at the door. She asked if we could talk. She apologized for dying and the pain it caused. She took her own life. She went on to say many other things during our conversation, which again unlike a dream, I recall very clearly. What I want to say here is that she told me that there is much more beyond "this existence" and when my "time" comes we can be together again. "If we want.".
Thanks for sharing your story. My condolences to you. Peace.
What makes Steve so special is that, having mastered his instrument, he knows that you don't need to show off how many tricks you have up your sleeve. He knows that his skill needs to be used solely for the purpose of enhancing the music. Whether with Genesis or with his own solo work, Steve makes his guitar sing as no other guitarist can. No other musician has produced such a body of solo work, after leaving a sucessful group. I have only ever seen 3 live concerts and 2 of these were Steve's band.
Saw his show in Jacksonville on Mar 1st. Thank you Steve for an awesome show
My hero ! He has the best ears for a guitar sound to fit the song and the other members in the band.
Still waiting for my CD that I preordered.
How’d I miss this? 10 days late.
Thanx Doug for a great interview with Steve Hackett. I have been fortunate to see Steve on Cruise To The Edge and when he came to Southern Ontario many times over the past ten years. He always puts on a first class performance. I also been very fortunate to have met both Steve and Jo many times and they are such kind and friendly people. I am looking forward to Steve's new album The Circus and The Nightwhale. Thanx again,
I like the thought process for each piece. Steve is the genuine article. He always gives excellent performances. I saw home years back with his acoustic trio which shows how versitlie he can be. He has mentioned in the past his other classical influences including Segovia.
Haha, I was in Madurai and Mahabalipuram just a few weeks ago! 😊
Hey Doug! Thanks for this interview with Steve Hackett!! I saw Steve at the Fox Trot at 50 tour and I now have tickets to see him in October 2024 in London at The Royal Albert Hall !
I'll be flying across the Pond ! Can't wait to see him again and the great group of guy's he has playing and singing with him!
P.S.....Love you too!!!🎶
Like the discussion about composition methodology and influences Doug. I could tell you enjoyed it as well.
The album grabs you like a great movie and thrills you to the end
Thanks for talking process. And you had theoretical questions to ask, which we music lovers don't always hear in interviews w/ composer/musicians. Your realization that Steve talked Classical was the kind of thing we proggies (enthusiastically) watch you for. :^ )
Steve seemed genuine, sincere and willing to open up. This was a great discussion. Many thanks.
I think the artist I've seen fifth most often - he always comes across as genuinely kind and humble. Fun interview, thanks!
Well done on getting the interview Doug. Steve Hackett never quite gets the praise he deserves but as he says, as he gets older his recognition is growing... Top bloke.
Like some of you who have posted comments here, I am fortunate to have met Steve Hackett in person - at Trading Boundaries, three weeks ago. I also had the privilege of meeting - and talking to - Steve's wife Jo, who is a lovely person!
Today the new album can be found on Spotify, and I will start listening to it right away! Thank you Doug for reminding us!
What a wonderful conversation. Thanks for taking time to listen to his work and thought proces. It was very interesting. I listened to an album of Steve's recently, one I'd never heard of before. It's called "Under a Mediterranean Sky". Omg what a treat. Since I got into genesis music, which was when "A trick of the Tail" came out, I have been a fan of his and his first solo album "Voyage of the Acolyte" was to me, mindblowing, which goes for his releases ever since. Can't wait to get the latest album.
Oh my god! What a gem! This interview was very special ! Amazing human being! God bless him!! Big thanks, Doug!
Nice one Doug. I have met Mr Hackett and he was such a lovely gracious man. I see his shows every year and they are always fantastic, uplifting and enjoyable. I have pre ordered the album and I look forward to the letterbox clunking in the morning.
WOW! Looking forward to this.
Congratulations Dr. H on a superb interview with one of the greats of the English rock scene. Well done!
I started going to Genesis shows when both Steve and Peter Gabriel were members - Heartbroken when Steve left, but I've seen more tours of Steves now and consider myself more of a Hackett fan. Great interview, Doug - You have achieved the Art art of intervewing which is to get the guest to relax and open up. Interesting to know how Jo's input and their years of travelling have influenced his music.
Wow fantastic, looking forward.
Wow, cant wait to watch this!
Great score Doug. Way to go!
Thank you for sharing 🎼
Brilliant interview with my all time favourite prog rock guitarist and a great in depth insight into Hackett's new album
Wow! We're not worthy! I ❤"Sketches of Satie" and of course "Highly Strung" but he's an astonishing guitarist .... and deeply inspirational. I love how he can switch between classical music style and hard core rock. He's just so talented 🥰
Thanks, Doug! Nice job scoring Steve Hackett! Good conversation, with plenty of info. You really made him work hard to explain how he incorporates Classical influences into his music once he found out you were a composer. I think you would have been happy with any explanation of how he makes his music--he worked harder than he needed to!
Anyway, thanks again, Doug. Seeing this has reminded me of something I've been meaning to ask you on Patreon.
Great interview. Two of my favorite prog-rock guitarists share the first name Steve and last name initial H. Now, maybe you could arrange an interview with Dr. May?
Brian played with both Steves.
Great interview. Looking forward to the album.
Really lovely to see and hear. Thanks Doug 🎉
Excellent Interview, Thank you Doug!
Enjoyed this interview very much, thanks to Steve and Doug!
Very well done doug excellent
Thanks Doug - one of my favorite musicians !
Doug - Excellent interview! Thanks so much! I'll be going to see Steve on March 1 in Jacksonville, FL. It will be my first time.
Great interview Doug, such a brilliant and humble man! Have ticket to see Steve in Madison WI, March 28! can't wait!
soooooooooooo Good !
Lovely interview. Always has very interesting things to say, and such a genuine guy. Maybe a chat with Tony Banks next?!
ITS THE DAILYYY DUUUCK 😍😍😍🥵🥵🫵🗣️🗣️🚨‼️
Hi Doug. Just love watching your channel. Can I suggest you have a listen to a track called Ice, performed by Camel at the Royal Albert Hall in 2018. A masterpiece!
At this point I think Steve is a really good place.
He doesn't have to prove anything to anyone anymore and he can just focus on what he likes and is good at.
This MAN means MUSIC
❤
The great thing about Steve is that he’ll talk to anyone.
Fan, critic, or personality; he doesn’t discriminate & he’s totally genuine. Far too modest & a true gent.
First! And hey Steve and Doug!!
All you need now is an interview with Jon Anderson, and that's a wrap!!
Kudos - getting a guitar god on your channel
Do you think he and the band will ever play the Trick album start to finish?
Doug, you should react to Gusliar by Pesniary. Pesniary were a vocal and instrumental ensemble from the ussr, Gusliar is a 36 minute long piece, it's kind of an opera, it's kind of progressive rock, it's kind of folk music. It's a masterpiece! It's the best album ever made in the ussr!
We do have electricity in England, why didn't Steve plug in his laptop?
Hey Doug react to Agalloch, something from The Mantle album. Maybe the second track but it is 14 minutes. They are better musicians in metal rather like Opeth
LOVED the 1st Steve Hackett "Concept" album - "The Voyage of the Acolyte", and from the few tracks I've heard from this new record - I will be avoiding it! Sounds like a Total MESS!
Am I first?!
No, I was! 😄
WHAT ? You listened to his new LP without us looking at you ? How could ya’ dr. D? How could ya’!
The interview is a grate swap i would say.
His PR provided it as I prepared for the interview. I just couldn't resist.
@@Doug.Helvering I wouldn’t have, not even Peter, Tony, Mike or Phil could have, I just wanted to joke around the initial thoughts of your idea of what a Music CZcams could be . . It’s still great, but the channel and its thesis have widely expanded
This, for me, is like the gods of two religions chewing the fat.
Ugly Cover, hope the Music is better
WARNINGS: I won't be positive.
Listened to the first 2 tracks for some days, then the whole today: boring.
Always the same kind of heavy production without subtleties, no evident melodies, world rock without inspiration. I'm sorry, because I love Steve very much, but since 2009 and Out of the tunnel's mouth, he has lost the inspiration for me. And that's a shame because he's still an awesome musician, and he has got fantastic musicians with him on this album. It simply does nothing on me.
Far, far, far away… from his masterpieces: Voyage of the Acolyte, Please don't touch, Spectral mornings, Defector, Guitar noir, Darktown, To watch the storms. I'm not happy to have to write that I'm completely deceived and frustrated, I won't buy this album, besides the cover art is awfully ugly.
