It's one of my all-time favorite albums. There's live versions of this. The sax players plays two saxophones at the same time playing different things on alto and baritone saxes.

They're not afraid of a little dissonance. And they make it work.

A Chinese lady, I think. Their chordal changes are just astonishing sometimes.

In retrospect when i heard this it made me feel, "I dont think this is a good idea, i should not be doing this, this was a very, very stupid decision" as I got my ass handed to me

I saw them perform in Boston when they were doing a different album at each performance. I went to the "Gaucho" show, which is my personal favorite.

These guys were the very best of the fusion guys. Just incredible compositions.

A lot of stuff comes into my head regarding this piece. A lot of movement, travel. moments of life slipping by. Lyle and Pat are my favorite composers. Wish Lyle was still with us. Been listening to them since they came out in 1977 or so. Try some of their early stuff if you're not familiar with it. Their white album, San Lorenzo, Jaco or some of their Brazilian influenced material with Pedro Aznar's voice. There is just so much stuff and it's all amazing. Thank you for showing the chart. It's fun to follow that.

For a debut album, NO one an touch VH I as the best there ever was. Period.

They say that Van Halen saved Rock and Roll. This album proves it. Back in the mid 70's, disco was taking over the airwaves. This album gave us rockers something to sink our teeth into. I saw them in 78 in Chicago at the Aragon Ballroom. They blew the roof off the place. I still have one of Eddie's picks that he threw into the crowd. Thanks for sharing that with us, Doug.

DAMNIT DOUG! I thought of all of you that you that I watched that you would get the ending. I am so angry right now that you probably got it but failed to point it out. He never musically resolved the end, his soliloquy was the resolution and you freaking missed it! You are supposed to be a composer for crying out loud! What the hell were you taught. You got caught up in the message and forgot the true beauty of his composition. Not liking or subscribing. I am so tired of people commenting on other peoples art who have no understanding of the craft.

The needle could drop on any groove and I'd be happy. The best rock album ever made.

7:12 - it's just a pick stratching the fat strings

There is actually a video of about two or three minutes of them playing at Tokyo on the third night of this very tour, filmed by the roadies. It’s a clip of smoke on the water. It’s interesting to see that Blackmore actually plays the opening riff starting on the sixth string at the 10th fret, which kind of settles a big debate that everyone had (although most the time he plays it down on the 5th fret). Also according to the liner notes of “live in Japan”, it said their manager hired a bunch of call girls for them to sleep with after their first night , so I always imagine them being all nice and relaxed after having had sex all night with some Japanese prostitutes. Maybe that explains why they’re playing so much better on the second night! Also, on the third night in Tokyo , while they were overall well received, they refused to play an encore so the crowd totally trashed the auditorium throwing the chairs all over the place.

Ralph Humphries deserves knighthood (even if he's not British) for the most creative and dazzling drum fills. But cheers for Doug for wishing he was doing this as a 1st-grade show-and tell; he's truly six years old again and loving it.

The best debut album since "Are You Experienced"

when I saw them open for Sabbath in 78, they started with On Fire, and blew my teenage ass away... this was also partially helped by supplies from a 1 armed Vietnam vet that had mercy on our lack of party supplies.

For me, Powerslave far and away is their best album

Great album I bought it when it first came out. You looked pretty goofy doing the air drum thing so please try to contain yourself. Atomic punk starts with Eddie muting the strings and using a wah pedal to manipulate the pitch. Simple stuff really

I think you'll like "Big Bad Bill" off the "Diver Down" album. Its an unexpected change in style for Van Helen.

@Doug.Helvering It’s just shy of a quarter tone sharp. The instruments weren’t tuned to this pitch, the track was sped up slightly during mastering.
