In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to music from Umphrey's McGee for the first time on the channel. And, I have to say, these guys are great! I listened to Puppet String and loved every second of it...the bass...the groove...the singing...the keyboards...the solos...all stellar! If you don't know this band, come along for the ride and get on the train!

I’m a live sound engineer in Madison, WI. Got to work with these guys when they were still playing small venues. They came through and played the club I was working at the time. Was a pleasure. Both musically and professionally. Great band, great guys. Thanx Doug
I went to high school with the guitarist Jake cinninger. Hung out at his house and studio a couple of times.
Oh hell yeah. UM is right up Doug's alley. Must do Jajunk.
In fact, I would LOVE you to do a full album react to Anchor Drops. It's still my favorite studio album of theirs.
They're proper musicians, who met at Notre Dame, other than Kris, who has a Masters in percussion from DePaul.
Yes, this or Mantis.
I think you'd love a live version of 2x2. Melodic and complex and always with a nice improvisational middle section. They also do a ton of great covers in their live shows. Thanks!
Lets go! Gotta get their friends Moe. on the channnel now :)
Yes. Most definitely.
Moe. Saw them once in their hometown of Utica. Halloween too. 98.
Hell yeah! It's great to hear you dig into more jam bands. Umphrey's is my personal favorite in that genre. Check out The String Cheese Incident or moe. as well. They're both great too!
This is amazing. Never heard of Umphreys McGee. Now I have. This is great.
The track In The Kitchen is amazing.
Their first Sound Engineer, Kevin, one of the best in the industry. He’s got golden ears.
Thank you to all the people suggesting new artists to cover on this channel. I love it! I read that Mike Portnoy drummed with them for a show or two last year! Amazing.
12/29/23, set 2. I believe the full video is up on CZcams somewhere.
For me, the ultimate jam band is Ozric Tentacles. If you have a spare hour, check out one of their early live recordings, Live Ethereal Cereal. Seeing them live is an experience - they play with whoever turns up. One starts a riff, someone else joins in, then another until everyone is playing. At some point they stop (probably for a drink) and start a new 'song'. No words, just instrumental.
To see this guy review Umphrey’s and mention how much he likes Dave Matthews Band just confirms that my taste in music is top notch.
Do yourself a favor Doug and go see them live. Over 20 years of seeing them and it’s such an amazing show each and every time. Also get on listening to that Anchor Drops record. Even though it’s 20 years old, it’s probably my fav. Enjoy!
Seen them play several times and it's always a good time
Wizard burial ground live in Brooklyn!
Thank you for doing some Umphreys
YES DOUG! Welcome to the Umphrey’s world. Would love to see you react to Der Bluten Kat, Mantis, All In Time, Pay The Snucka, or Bridgeless. \mm/
Big Big Train, Transatlantic, Haken, now Umphrey's... it's like I'm watching you turn into ME. Which is kind of cool and not at all weird to watch. 😅
Everytime I’ve seen some music expert review Umphrey’s McGee they all are amazed how talented and professional they are. Never heard someone who really knows good music say, “Yah Umphrey’s, not a big fan.”
It's about freakin time! Knew you'd love these hard rockin mutha's!! More Umph! More Umph!
Oh Doug. Oh Doug Doug Doug.
What a Pandora’s box you are about to open up here. Umphrey’s McGee is my favorite band in the world. I’ve seen them over 130 times. They’re unlike any other band in the “jam band” scene.
THEY ROCK. HARD. Two stellar guitarists both playing lead. Jake Cinninger in particular should be held up the pantheon of all time great live guitarists. There is no limit to his mastery of so many different styles of guitar playing. Oh and they also have have best drummer in rock and roll, Kris Myers.
The twin lead guitar attack really separates them from their peers, and their overall heavy sound relative to everyone else. They are a as much a prog band and a metal band as they are a jam band.
I encourage you to dig more into their catalog. There’s a video of the song Wizard Burial Ground from Brooklyn Bowl 2014 that is stellar. They are accomplished studio musicians but they really are a must-see live band. Go see them if they come near you. They will blow your mind. They do every single time I see them.
I've never heard these guys before, but I really like them. Gonna listen to a few more tracks just to confirm that this wasn't a fluke 😊
I think I commented a couple years ago that you should give these guys and this song a listen, lol. Glad you finally did. NOW, given your awesome April Fools Mash-up video, Go give a listen to some of ZONKEY the Umphreys Mash-up album I recommend "Sad Clint Eastwood" "Frankie Zombie" "Life During Exodus" or "Strangletage"
Bullhead City on the Anchor Drops album is one of my favorite songs of all time. A very simple piece of music.
Thx for maintaining your great, high standard of music reactions, Doc. Occasionally you range a tad beyond my comfort zone. Perhaps my background in choral music and love of 60s-80s British rock and classical guitar has jaded by appreciation for stuff such as Ramstein. How about Bobby McFerrin sometime??
That bass won me over, always love me a band with a solid bassist
The album behind you is the best album you’ve never heard.
ZONKEY - every single song Doug must dissect.
I 2nd that
Yeah
From my hometown of South Bend, Indiana!
Oh my goodness I’m so excited for this one!
Welcome to the most under rated and always appreciated Jam band.
Check out their album “Anchor Drops”. My personal favorite.
About damn time!
One of my Favorite Bands! Definitely check out that Album you have looks like Anchors Drop. This band is a whole new Rabbit Hole Doug Enjoy!!
Their music covers a huge variety of styles.
FINALLY I'm so happy you're into them.
You need to try some Widespread Panic a staple of the Jam band genre for 35 years and still going strong!
"Tall Boy"by WP is a classic.
Love Umphreys How about some New Grass jams? Greensky Bluegrass Infamous String Dusters
Very tame
I love your face when you are enjoying music 😅😂❤
New to me - excellent groove!
more Jam Band please Doug!!
Love it
A track on which they didn’t jam 🤷♂️ But a great song, and I think they are most advanced jam band out there…they will group improvise entire arrangements in real time, never heard another band do that.
Loving the UMPH \mm/
You gotta do Kyros at some point czcams.com/video/PUajxstGpkM/video.html
Welcome to the fam
I didn't know I love them either 😉
Doug, check out their older stuff! Anchor drops is agood start. Improg. Progressive improvisation.
FINALLY
You should hear something from the album Temple of Shadows from the brazilian band Angra. Really insane vocals from the frontman Edu Falaschi and from all the feats from all around the world. It's a stellar record, really progressive, well produced and the best of all, it's really fun!
One of the tightest live bands I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot. Their on-stage improvisation is second to none. Check out their "Soaring Jam" to see what I'm talking about. No one, and I mean no one, can listen to it and not feel better about everything for it. ---> czcams.com/video/TF7OQNKOQaQ/video.html&ab_channel=nothingtoofancy42
"Puppet Strings" is a decent entry point for Umphs. A good next step would be an "All In Time" or an "In The Kitchen", maybe a "Phil's Farm". Looking to have your face melted off? Try the metal operatic instrumental, "Wizard Burial Ground". You can also jump into their mashups, like "Nemo's Fat Bottomed Good Times" which mashes Umphs, Queen, and Zeppelin tunes together. If you can, go check them out live. They'll knock your socks off and make your ding-a-ling sing.
Lastly, check out some Goose - for personal consumption, their live jams can get a tad long. Maybe an "Arcadia", a "Factory Fiction", or a "Hot Tea" as an intro.
Thanks, Doug, Stay cool brother.
I know you are just getting into game music but i suggest looking into From software games music.
Lubwig the holyblade from Bloodborne is my favorite of all time game song.
Also something to check out on Monday might be Pentakill, a band created by a game studio to make music exclusively themed around the game.
I’ve had the impression that the term “jam” implies loose improvisation. However, this song is clearly structured. I’ve seen them live and they are very impressive. I never saw them do anything loose or sloppy. I love the apparent message of the song too.
Their smashups are fantastic
Yeah, the Halloween concerts are always exciting to see what they pull out
Check out moe. playing Timmy Tucker or Rebubula.
Or maybe Yodelittle.
❤
🤘
check out Lettuce!
Hurt Bird Bath is really good also. Nothing beats a really good Bridgeless though
He should review the live bridgeless>den>bridgeless video that's here on CZcams.
you should get back to King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard again next thursday! I suggest their song Iron Lung 🤘
Love that song.
I am hearing AIC and Pearl Jam heavy @ around 9 minutes. Cool stuff tho.
Doug, listen to "Remind Me" by UM and thank me later.
Gotta listen to The Disco Biscuits, The Very Moon
You should check out fugazi
So Doug, I know you’ve been experiencing many wonderfully talented musicians within the genre of metal music. I would seriously encourage you to consider when you do a full album again, Side A then B, to dive into King Diamond, Abigail. It is a full concept album that takes place circa 1845. The story is dark and well written and the music is masterfully choreographed to tell the story of Abigail LaFey. If any of you King fans are here; give me a push on this so Doug knows what a treat awaits him.
“Beware of the slippery stairs, you could easily fall and break your neck. Hand me that torch and I will lead the way
To the secret in the dark
Take a look into the vault....
The sarcophagus of a child. Abigail has been in here for years and years . . . stillborn."
Could you please react to the masterpiece "GATE OF STEINER" made by the legendary Takeshi Abo. You will be amazed :)
@doughelvering check out Fly me to the Moon - Yoko Takahashi acid bossa version by Shiro Sagisu
Hey! New sub here love your content and how you go in depth with music. Theres this one song i really would like for you to check out its called *Libera Me From Hell* from the anime gurren lagann i promise this score youll like it
song is about a conversation between a Christian and a non-believer. Brendan has done interviews in the past where he explained some of the lyrics.
Great analysis though
A very particular non-believer, at that. 😉
@@kelleymitchell8196 indeed
If you think this is good, you should see them live. And this isnt even close to one of their best songs.
I'm not very familiar with Umphrey's McGee, I've seen them on TV once or twice, but I've heard much better stuff from them. For me they are like Phish: their instrumental stuff is good, their vocal stuff is not.
Theyre friggin horrible.
Wow looks like I'm going back to Rick Beato or the Charismatic Voice
I know super U.M. fans probably don't agree, but I think Similar Skin is their best. Beginning to end.
