I had a girlfriend who was not into rock and was very much into classical music. I picked her up one day with Maiden playing and promised to change it. After a few minutes she asked me to leave it on. She said she could not believe how melodic it was - she was into some pretty heavy classical stuff like I was and totally got the connection.
They are not like any other band! Very well-balanced with a lot of great and strong melodies, beauty, emotions, sentimentality, moderate heaviness, power, vigor, boldness, drama, theatrical sense, dynamics, that’s something rare, and you can’t hear things like that every day!
I remember as a teenager when Powerslave was released followed by the World Slavery Tour... Opening band was W.A.S.P. Holy Hell what a great time to be a metal head.
And that is why Iron Maiden is hands down the greatest heavy metal band ever. No one even comes close. Each member is a master at their craft and it all comes together in absolute perfection. Beautiful!
Powerslave was my first concert ever. My mom took me. W.A.S.P. opened. They came out with the ass cut out of their pants. My mom took it in stride and didn't say a thing, just let me be a crazy teenager and enjoy the heck out of two great bands. Maiden has been my favorite band for some 40 years now. 40 years. I've got a few more to go and I don't see another band taking their place. Such great musicians all around.
They took many of the "World Slavery Tour" recordings to create the "Live After Death" album. I'll put the LAD album up against just about any other live metal album... Especially the cassette version that includes the 5 bonus tracks they omitted on the CD version.
On "the duelists," I always pictured Dave and Adrian "dueling" on the guitar solos. I can picture two swordsmen fighting as they trade solos and come together on other parts. This song, in my opinion, is one of the most visual songs they've recorded.
I've been literally waiting for years to see you react to Aces High, my favorite Iron Maiden song. It's a perfect combination of music and lyrics. The high tempo of the song and guitars perfectly capture the urgency of the lyrics. It has perhaps the greatest of all Iron Maiden choruses. Can't believe you hadn't reacted to it or 2 Minutes to Midnight! These are seminal Maiden songs. All time classics.
1984 was the year I first heard Iron Maiden. I think I must have listened to Powerslave and Live After Death a thousand times in 1985. Powerslave made me what I am today, an absolute fan of the band for over 40 years. Thanks for the reaction.
Couple of weeks ago I bought my 6-year old son a CD - "Best of the Beast", which starts with a live version of "Aces High". Now every morning when I brush my teeth, I hear this song as my son is getting dressed up for kindergaden. That was money well spent ;)
"worked" this tour in '84 with a crew pass (one show, Fargo ND). Friend got those all the time back then. So, watch side-stage, move a couple crates to a truck after the show, get the pass stamped, party with the band after. Great times.
I heard that concert and I lived halfway between the fairgrounds and Harwood. It sounded like someone a few blocks away had their stereo too loud. I rode my bike around trying to find the source. I don't know if there was an inversion keeping the sound near the ground or what.
@@PaulNelson156 I thought Eddie was cool. I would see the older kids with T shirts or the mirrors you would get from the games at the Red River fair but none of my friends were into it at the time.
You should listen to the A Matter Of Life And Death album, the way they showed so much growth in the writing songs art is really something, and very good lyrics too, and my personal favorite jeje
With everything thats happening in the Middle East & Ukraine, 2 Minutes to Midnight drives home the madness of war, a song from thr 80s sadly as relevant today as it was then.
To this day I still get goosebumps with the first notes of Aces High. The opening recorded on Live After Death with Churchill’s speech and sounds of fighter planes overhead solidified it as iconic. Fantastic album all around, with some of my favorite tracks.
I was 14 when this came out....and will still spin this and or spotify it and never get tired of PowerSlave amongst all their others. This November God's be willing I will see them once more!
There's a war inside my head between Somewhere In Time and Powerslave as my favorite Maiden albums. I think Somewhere is the best album straight through but with Powerslave's first two and final two tracks you could literally have 4 or 5 tracks of nothing but fart noises and it would still be top 5 metal album of all time. Aces, 2 Minutes, Powerslave and Rime are just that good.
Excellent reaction and analysis! The 7 albums released by Iron Maiden in the 80s: masterpieces of Heavy Metal!!! "Powerslave" (1984) is extremely special: it has 8 exceptional songs! Greetings from Brazil!!!
Not gonna lie, the start of the album always brings tears to my eyes. Reminds me of seeing them live for the first time on August 16th in 2008 on the TT Circuit in Assen, Netherlands. It started with Churchill's Speech and then went into those first two songs. The pure surge of power from the band and energy from the crowd was incredible. I will cherish that for the rest of my live!
Martin Birch, everyone-the secret sauce to Iron Maiden's career-best work in the 80s. He knew bands better than they knew themselves, and he wrung the best out of them by any means necessary.
My first Maiden live tour... Powerslave will always be a special one for me having seen the World Slavery tour in 84... Twisted Sister was a pretty fun opener on that leg of the USA Tour...
Back before the internet and all I had to go off of was the lyrics and had never even heard of the Prisoner TV series, I was convinced Back in the Village was a song about the perspective of a dive bomber pilot. I still can't not hear it that way even today.
"The romance of war" is an excellent way of putting it. Theres a layer of excitement and complexity to it that is fascinating, but the subject itself if grisly, grim and not always pleasant to talk about.
@@jonathanatkinson5256 my mistake. Back then, I bought the Live After Death album before I got Powerslave. After listening to the live album repeatedly, I just assumed it was on the album also.

The album did not disappoint. Since then, this and Live after Death have been in constant rotation for me.
Was lucky enough to catch the World Slavery Tour in Sheffield, England as a teenager and it was mind blowing. Love this album. It’s almost classical in parts. Brilliant

Doug - it’s such a delight to watch you experience these songs for the first time, especially when we know what’s coming up before you hear it. Cheers!
I love how the cadence of Aces High simulates the pacing of an aerial dogfight. Just an absolute banger! And the lyrics in 2 Minutes To Midnight, while graphic, are pure poetry!
Powerslave, Somewhere in Time, and Seventh Son are peak Maiden, there's no doubt about it. The perfect balance of killer riffs, intelligent but catchy lyrics, and some proggy arrangements. Often I'll say Seventh is my favourite album, because I'm a sucker for a concept album, but honestly Powerslave transcends the band. The level of musicianship is just something else, and there wasn't a vocalist in all of rock and metal who could touch Bruce's performance on this album. The speed of delivery in The Duellist, the expression in 2 Minutes To Midnight, and those overdubbed harmonies throughout the album are incredible. I do hope you give Killers a full playthrough though at some point Doug. Although some disregard anything that doesn't have Bruce on vocals, Killers is for me a top 5 Maiden album easily. I think it's better than the self-titled debut across the board, and definitely worth checking out!
I have a clear memory of buying this cassette on the way to the beach for a surf session. Losfer Words ended as I parked and I was so amped up to surf. It became my surf soundtrack of winter 1984-1985. Also bought it on vinyl and still have that album... along with everything else Maiden ever released.
This is the album that stayed in my cassette player for about a year. Until Live After Death came out. My 13 year old self approves....Best album cover
I remember three years ago when I found your reaction to one of my favorite Iron Maiden songs of all time, "Rime of the Ancient Mariner". Glad to see you're still slinging videos, Doug. Stay thrashin' to the beats, man :)
Wow great stuff Doug. Just for context we are the same age. I was exposed to Maiden with this album back in 84, but being 7 years old, it didn't quite click. It wasn't till 88, that I bought Somewhere In Time that my love for Maiden was cemented. So I always lean to SIT or 7thSon as my favorite albums BUT there is no doubt in my mind that Powerslave is Maiden at their Pinnacle. The creativity, rawness, power, speed, lyrics and Bruce Fkin Dickinson! This album is ALL Killer with no Filler, I think that phrase was coined by Powerslave ;) !! Cheers, Up the IRONS!
Oh man, and I would absolutely be remiss not to mention the late legendary Producer, Martin Birch... He recorded, mixed and engineered this masterpiece. I would say, what made this record sound so clean and timeless; 50% is from the band and the other half is because of MB. It is what Maiden is missing in their modern era. I do love the new albums, i truly do, but they do not hold a candle to what was produced in the 80s
This was so much fun Doug! Taking me back to my youth. Piece of Mind and Powerslave were huge for me. Triggered me to go and discover their back catalog and to be a fan for life. Something about those 2 albums hold a special place for me. The kind of songs that immediately take you right back to that time and place. Have to love the power of music to do that.❤
One of the things that I have loved about Iron Maiden is how many of their songs are from historical events and literary works. One of my favorites is Rime of the Ancient Mariner. When it came out it made me remember seeing a school report my mom did on Rime when she was in High School. I never knew what it was about until the song came out. 🤘UP THE IRONS 🤘
Came here for maybe my favourite metal album of all time and got Doug Helvering on some of the best air drums known to man. Priceless. Not mentioned here much is Steve Harris' bass playing on this album. It's truly epic. I'm a bass player myself, and this album has some of the gnarliest bass playing ever. Not only are the lines thoughtful, but the endurance needed to play songs like The Duellists, Back in the Village etc. But to be honest - everyone on this album brought their A game. Epic. Well done Doug.
My favorite Maiden album! I was 6 years old when this came out. My older brother was 17 and this was all he listened to every day after school so it stuck with me!
Two Minutes was what got me into Metal. The main riff blew me away, not to mention how the drums and lyrics build up to interact with it. The part where the slower half-time bridge returns to the main riff will probably give me goosebumps for as long as I'll have a pulse. To this day, I basically compare every new song to that one, and most hardly come close for me. I'm looking forward to your reaction to side 2, especially Back In The Village.
I saw them the first time on this tour. I was 18 and it still ranks near the top of my in-person concerts. If you have never seen Eddie walk onto the stage live, you owe it to yourself to go to a concert.
Thank you for this, I really needed it! ... and yes WOW! Last video I watched about Iron Maiden (pardon the pun... made) I think was that 'documentary' they did about their South American tour, when Bruce organised and Piloted that Jumbo! That was a really well made documentary, with some bits and pieces oft hem playing and talking to us... they managed to do a HUGE amount of concerts in a very short time. Forgot what is called... you should watch that - possibly 2 hours long, if not wrong. You will enjoy it...
I had gotten into them the album prior to this one. Then once this record came out MTV teased all week that they'd be dropping the video to 2 Minutes so I triple-checked my VCR to make sure I got it. This tour (along with the final Metallica tour with Cliff the following year) is still my favorite show ever.
Doug is running, scrambling, flying, rolling, turning, diving, doing it again!!!

I think they never did a better combined guitar solo than on Powerslave.
I feel like it's a different genre to most of other Iron Maiden tracks, it might be the name's influnece but to me it feels like power metal.
Also, Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
The ‘Live After Death’ version is way better than the studio version.

The 80’s staples: Powerslave, Killers, Number of the Beast, Somewhere in Time. All epic albums from top to bottom.

Powerslave is an all time masterpiece from start to finish. It should be put in the Smithsonian as a work of art

Oh, Aces High. That's got me hooked to Iron Maiden decades ago and still hits me every single time!
Where is the King Diamond react?
Sugestion: "Abigail", by King Diamond
YESSS, full album! That would be amazing!!!!
LAD is the best live album from Maiden or any other band. The sound and mix is incredible!!!
I remember three years ago when I found your reaction to one of my favorite Iron Maiden songs of all time, "Rime of the Ancient Mariner". Glad to see you're still slinging videos, Doug. Stay thrashin' to the beats, man :)
I haven't heard Aces High for a while, damn it was really nostalgic! Such a great song! 😍
Have to love the power of music to do that.❤
Watching Doug experience those songs for the first time brings back memories of the first time I heard that whole album!! That was fun to watch!!
Aces High, haven't heard it in years but instant goosebumps. Such perfection.

In 2024 - Iron Maiden is the greatest band on the face of the earth.
PERIOD
Love seeing yoy get into it bro makes me smile every time watchable ya , up the irons my brother
I had gotten into them the album prior to this one. Then once this record came out MTV teased all week that they'd be dropping the video to 2 Minutes so I triple-checked my VCR to make sure I got it. This tour (along with the final Metallica tour with Cliff the following year) is still my favorite show ever.
damn! I love it so much. great reaction video and one of the best metal albums of all times
