On this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to music from The Carpenters for the first time on the channel. Although, I have heard Bless the Beasts and the Children on my Patreon. With mom spending time with us at home...and this song earning high votes in our recent Fan Favorites series, I decided to take Superstar out for a spin. Come along as I share some interesting backstory to the song and enjoy a listen to Superstar with the Carpenters with all of you!

Hi everyone!
Is this Ms. Mom? Hello! Doug is a rare gem on CZcams.
your sons doing an amazing job
Hello, Ms. Doug's Mom! Doug is the best. Doug, I've always loved The Carpenters. My entire childhood was filled with their music. Thanks as always, Doug!
Hey, Donna! So much Carpenters in my life, too, as it happened, on 8-track throughout the 1970's. They came through Kentucky once that I know of, one of the first shows in Rupp Arena in Lexington, promoting the just released "Now and Then" album. And the General Manager was a family friend, so we had tickets and backstage passes! Guess who got strep throat the day before the show? So I never sam them live, either. I feel your pain, girl.
@@soggytom Oh wow! Sorry you missed them!
Hi Mrs Doug. Karen Carpenter had a voice no one on Earth was supposed to have, sublime, beautiful and so full of soul. God rest.
I hate the fact I was too cool for The Carpenters when they were making music. 41 years later and their music makes me really emotional now. Such a treasure was taken away far too soon and so senselessly.
Richard was such an incredible arranger, and he seldom gets the plaudits he deserves.
Totally agree!
Karen had one of the greatest voices of all time. Not only did she have perfect pitch, she was pitch perfect. She was known as "one take Karen" in the studio because of that. And that was at least 20 years before auto tune would make average singers sound good. Her passing at such a young age from anorexia was truly a tragedy.
When Karen Carpenter passed away it was a end of an era but the music of the Carpenters keeps on going it is timeless rip Karen Carpenter
💯
The genius of Mr. Leon Russell with Bonnie Bramlett.
I've said (and posted) before that Karen's voice gives my soul a hug it didn't know it needed!
Karen had such a pure voice....years later I enjoy her songs just as much!
The first time these two people have ever been mentioned in the same sentence 😮
It's so cool that your mom is a part of your CZcams channel. 👏👏
You can almost hear Mrs Doug thinking 'Douglas Helvering, shut the hell up!' in a Mom voice😂😂 still.... a great video.
Hi Mom! People don’t realize that listening to the radio was on AM stations that played top 40 pop songs.very few rock and roll stations until FM radios started broadcasting and usually just high end autos had FM radios!
So true!!!!!!
Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft is a cover of Klaatu
my favorite Carpenters song is Yesterday Once More
Hi Doug's mom. That's lots of good background information on this song. Karen Carpenter is one of my favorite female vocalists. A one of kind voice.
Karen Carpenter has one of the smoothest voices in the '70's, and one SEVERELY underrated drummer. I could listen to the Carpenters all day long.
I grew up in a city that was near Downey California witch was where the Carpenters lived. We used to drive by their house with the hopes that we might see them. Thanks for bringing back that fond memory 😊
🤩
Been waiting for you to review the Carpentars. They did some great stuff. Your mom is beautiful by the way.☺ For those who aren't aware, Richard and Karen started out playing jazz in The Richard Carpentar Trio with Richard of course on the piano, Karen on the drums and Wes Jacobs on the bass.
Thanks!!!!!
As far as I can recall now, the first Carpenters song I became aware of was Goodbye to Love, and the wonderful guitar solo. It was probably rare to have a distorted electric guitar solo on what was generally regarded as an 'easy listening' track.
Yes, Karen was also an accomplished drummer. She started off behind a kit, then was encouraged to sing lead. There are videos of her playing them on YT. I think this song was in Tommy Boy movie lol.
Karen's main vocal is just her, no overdubbing or doubling. The small amount of background vocals in the second verse are both Karen and Richard, doubled. When they were both in college, Karen drummed for, and sang in, the choir. Richard accompanied and did much arranging for the choir. Sound familiar, Doug?
Mom is wicked good company!
😊
Actually Richard says they toured too much which contributed to Karen's illness and demise and Richard's prescription drug addiction. They did overdub all their backing vocals! I was so very fortunate to meet them several times and have some lovely notes from Karen. She had a three octave range, and perfect pitch!
Wow...thanks for the info. You are blessed to have known them!
Just found your channel and love it! My parents and grandparents took me to see The Carpenters in the mid 70's. I was probably between 7-9yo. I was mesmerized. To me she was so beautiful.
Oh, Dr. Doug! I love your reactions when you have your wife, and now, your mother as a guest. Way to spread joy and love. Thank you.
Incidentally, Karen died at the same age as Bruce Lee. Both performers were at the top of their game when they died.
karens voice is like all the precious gemstones you can think of combined into one
The Carpenters toured excessively in the United States, in Europe and Japan where they were enormously popular. I was lucky enough to see them perform in concert 3 times. Karen possessed an especially warm, natural, resonant alto - that no other female singer has come close to sounding like.
I loved her alto voice!!!!!
Such a beautiful voice
Beautiful song...Karen Carpenter had such a lovely voice.
I enjoyed listening to your mom sharing her thoughts and memories. An excellent job Mrs.Helvering raising your son.My favorite Carpenters song is Goodbye to Love which has a distorted guitar solo.Thank you for this video.
Loved your mom's reaction, as I could see Karen taking her back to when she first heard Karen's voice. Karen had the voice of an angel.
Oh baby! Doug, hi from the UK. Love this! Play some more British stuff. Enjoy you're channel. Xx
man, i saw this title, & i HAD to watch!! i LOVE this song. i don't even know what channel this is . . .
❤
That harpsichord at the end speaks volumes. A lot to unpack in relation to her life, I feel.
Lets just say...there are the legends and famous female singers....and then there's Karen Carpenter....
Another Leon Russel song that the Carpenters covered is my favourite by them, it’s called This Masquerade. 🥰 sublime. 👍🏻
Listening to Karen sing Masquerade made realize that she would have been an outstanding jazz crooner.
I absolutely adored Karen's voice, but Richard's is worth admiring too. I remember loving "Your Wonderful Parade" from my parents' cassette, which feature Richard and some great harmony. (You need to include your mom more often 😉)
Thanks!!!!🤩
Great reaction .The Carpenters was my first concert .they were great I fell in love with Karen .I was a teenager in Brownsville Texas
Thanks!!!!!
@@donnaasher7502 you are very welcome
Watching Tommy Boy, Superstar comes out of nowhere. Mind blown.
A beautiful woman, a beautiful voice gone way too soon.
You should react to one of her drum videos. She was amazing and so underrated as a drummer.
Woah, I had only heard the Sonic Youth version of this song before, didn't even know it was a cover of a cover!
My mom went to Downey High School with the Carpenters.
Wow!!!!! 🤩
Your mother is so cool! Thank you both for sharing your reaction with us. The Carpenters are one of my all-time favorites. Olivia Newtown John is up there as well.
The Carpenters were magnificent for that period of time. So amazing songs, with amazing arrangements, musicians and a so perfect presence and voice of Karen Carpenter.
I have seen you had diving so much on Heavy Metal band’s songs. Please, do not forget the other genres and great bands you used to listen too. Thank you very much for for sharing this so beautiful moment with you mom and us.
Your mom??? Don't you mean your sister??? 😉❤️
she does look really young lol
♥
BEAUTIFUL MEMORIES WITH THIS SONG . WHAT A VOICE. THANKS TO DOUG AMD HIS MOM 👍🤧❤️
Ok what I LOVE about this is how much joy you both have. You Doug watching your moms love for the song and how the song takes her back in time and space. Cheers and much love to you both!
According to Rita Coolidge: she actually came up with the line "Your Guitar Sounds So Sweet and Clear" about Eric Clapton, so Rita should get part credit on the lyrics!
Thank you for your reaction to this Carpenters song. Please also react to their song, “A Place To Hideaway” 😊
Karen also appeared with John Denver in one of the numerous variety shows of the 70's. She showed off her drumming skills with different percussion instruments and also revealed a comic side too.
That was really fun. I remember this song from my younger days. I loved Karen's voice because I could sing with her more comfortably than with others. Low alto music lover here.
First time I saw them was on Mama Cass's TV show. It was pretty cool to see a female drummer who could also sing.
Heart warming to see you both chating over this wonderful song, this mom and son relationship is so beautiful, just made my day brighter! Thx!
Mrs. Doug. I was surprised to hear you say that the Carpenters didn't tour much so you never saw them live. I guess I was more lucky than than I realized at the time because I did get to see them in Abilene, Texas. In fact, the first time I ever heard both Superstar and Rainy Days and Mondays was at this concert. They were performing the songs before the records were released. They were a five piece group, and Karen was on drums. It's been so long ago that I don't remember many of the details, but one I do remember is they flubbed the beginning of their very first song. They stopped, Karen laughed and they started again. There were no other hiccups. I also remember how much they sounded like their record despite being only a five piece band.
Hi, thanks for the info! Our closest town for concerts was Memphis, TN so I never got a chance to see them in person. Loved ALL those songs so much!
All perfect ... like love.
Karen's brother Richard was a great composer and a brilliant arranger. He wrote a new (back then) Christmas song that I really love. Richard edited the second verse and put some words that were more reflective of the Carpenter image. The second verse has some "BAD" words in it.
My brother brought me a very futuristic-looking 8-track tape player home from Japan when he was in the Navy in the very early ‘70s. I had it for decades! Awesome piece of equipment. It looked like a little white robot.
Written by the Legendary LEON RUSSELL..nuff said.
Your Mom is AWESOME, Doug! (I had an 8 track in MY 76 El D, TOO!!)
☺ Thanks!!!!
I learned how to conduct to the Carpenters. Thanks Mr. Cappy!
Doug, your mother is a great person, and don't you forget it. ;-)
Ksenia Buzina does a great cover version of this song too.
Welcome to the channel Doug's mum, I hope this is the first of many more appearances. All I can thank my own mother for is an introduction to Beethoven - I'm speaking musically of course - and some might say that was a gift beyond price.
As for this song, something about it doesn't quite work. Karen's voice isn't the problem, she absolutely nails the complex, conflicted protagonist. But I think the arrangement makes her sound too comfortable, it doesn't give her the chance to suggest that although she'll probably grow out of this phase things might take a somewhat darker turn one day...
Great to hear from mum.
That last unresolved chord leaves the listener in limbo -- will he ever return? We don't know, we never find out.
I didn't see it on your Patreon channel, but if you haven't reviewed it yet, I think you would appreciate the song "Hummingbird" by Seals & Crofts, from 1972. I and many others think the chordal progression near the end of the tune is one of the most beautiful in pop music history.
Thanks, you two.
Ha! 8-track! My family had ervery Carpenters album through Horizon on 8-track so we could listen in our 1972 Chevy Kingswood Estate wagon. In fact, 1976's "A Kind Of Hush" was my first carpenters album NOT on 8-track! Thanks for reminding me, Donna. Good times.
Those days filled with their music was just magical!
I first heard Stairway to Heaven on an 8-track lol
Ms. Donna, we’ve had so much fun watching you with Doug and hope we get to see more of you again.
P.S. Did you know Karen Carpenter won best drummer in the Playboy drummers poll over John Bonham?
Thanks!!!!
Leon Russell was a genius and such a super talent. He claimed later in his life that Elton John picked him out of the gutter. Also…RIP Hal Blaine a superb session drummer.
Your mother looks very young!
Plastic surgery!
@@paulwouters2025 Nope! No plastic surgery at all! Just really great genetics!
Love seeing your Mom having such a good time.
I loved every minute!
Doug should also check out Sonic Youth's version of this wonderful song.
Great to seeing you have these moments with your mom. I used to. My mom now has dementia and those times have lassed
❤️🔥 perfect
NICE!! Great back story. Curious to find the Bette Midler cover! THIS MASQUERADE another of another awesome song! Peace 🕊️☮️
Hi Mom! The band Sonic Youth does a really, really good version of "Superstar"... They also did a song called "Tunic (Song for Karen)".
What a nice episode! 😄👍
Hosting your Mom was a lot of fun. Karen Carpenter's smooth and mellow voice was like no other. She died way before her time. The physical and mental stress of being a recording artist would be too much for me. I have read that their mother doted on Richard more than Karen. She must have felt like she never measured up to Richard. How tragic that her life ended like it did.
DO MORE WITH YOUR MOM!!!!!! LOVE HER!!!
😍
well I'm with classic rock beagle. Boomer here. I experienced Karen from beginning. Driving my car remember having had to stop because I could believe what I was hearing. In that era she and brother not appreciated. I wondered if I was missing something. Have never come across any group Karen/Richard who have moved me as much. Wish more people could listen to her " Don't Cry for me Argentina. I just wish Karen's mother could have appreciated her.
i had a 8 track player that i fitted into my car here in the uk..much better quality than cassette players at that time!
Very interesting! Your mom's reference to Michael Jackson being a fan of Karen's reminded me of something. In the late 1970's, Karen worked with legendary producer, Phil Ramone recording a solo album. Prolific songwriter Rod Temperton wrote a few songs for that album, of which Karen chose two, "Lovelines" and "When We Try." She turned down a couple of songs that were then offered to Michael Jackson: "Off The Wall" and "Rock With You." Another interesting song had been written for the Carpenters years earlier - but rejected (their mother disapproved of the reference to a sleeping pill and forbid her children to record it). "Last Night I Didn't Get to Sleep at All" then became a top 10 hit for The 5th Dimension.
09:20 is where Karen "wins" the song/ So much longing, desperation, helplessness into one phrase, "you said you'll be coming". heart breaking. she does not just "sing beautifully", she sings like its her story, and I believe her.
Karen is great, but let’s talk about one of my favorite albums of all time back there on your shelf- Late For The Sky😊 by Jackson Browne
DELANEY AND BONNIE'S song "Coming Home," the A-side to their version of Groupie (Superstar) is GREAT! You can see a video on CZcams featuring Eric Clapton and George Harrison.

Good Day...Bette Midler and Karen Carpenter. I went to the same high school in Hawaii that Bette Midler went to! Radford High School on the island of Oahu (Honolulu HI). I spent the first year of my sophomore year there.
Your mom!? No way. At most the lovely lady may be your slightly older sister - with excellent taste in music. I wouldn't advise asking her opinion about Rammstein. 😅
❤
I love you Doug. Your respect for your mom made my day
🥰
They very likely just doubled her vocals in the choruses. That's how it was done. It takes no time.
On analog tape, shifting one vocal track a few milliseconds wasn't easy like it is now with digital workstations. Again, all they needed to do to get that chorus effect was rewind the tape, patch to a new track on the analog machine, and hit record. Karen would just nail it.
There were delay devices that could have achieved that chorus effect, but why bother when you can just have Karen sing it again?
I loved Carpenters as a teenager. One of my first loves of music among Neil Diamond, Bread, and The Moody Blues. Then I discovered Yes, which changed my appreciation of music. I still love my first loves. But I lost interest in those artist when they changed their styles to not what their sound was, or in Breads case, breaking up.
mmm... Much like what I was thinking of posting: Before Yes the Carpenters were my favorite. (A pretty big change in styles... some would say!) ...Looking thru 45s with a friend I mentioned having all their singles. Why don't you just buy their albums then, she said.... which I somehow hadn't even considered. Later that year A Song for You, my first Carpenter's album... on 8 track. Karen's voice and the Carpenters, still among my favorites.
@@marksink1652Great music is great no matter what genre it is. For me, my favorite album is Tales From Topographic Oceans, followed by Hold Your Fire. Two masterpieces that no artist will ever top. The self titled album Carpenters comes in at 28 on my all music list.
@@charleswagner2984 TFTO, same here! With some of the later Carpenter singles, Sing and Mr Postman.... I went away from them for a number of years. Though I can appreciate most of their output now.
You should listen to Solaris - Obscura. Not even asking for a video of it, just even a reply to this comment on what you think about it would be awesome.
@1:36 - Love! 8-track!
Hello to your beautiful MOM.
❤
Your mother!
I thought she was your younger sister.😁
I love it!!!! I'll have to remind Doug of that several times a year!
Ronnie James Dio and Karen Carpenter. The best male and female singers to ever walk on earth. Both with such a breath control..
True!!!!
Your Mom is adorable!
Thanks!!!
Iced Earth - Dante's Inferno please
Lol, they actually toured too much and couldn't find time to get into the studio to keep the hits and albums coming.
And the pressures from the endless cycle of touring and recording took their toll, in more ways than one.
Managers didn't make money from bands that took 'holidays'.
@@marksink1652 Absolutely…and Rich has admitted as much.
