S is for Super - Porsche 991.1 Carrera S vs. Base

  • A lot of you advised me to go for the S or 4S models when I was searching for my Porsche 911 991... should I have listened...? In this video my friend Mario and I take his 991.1 Carrera 2S out for a spin and set it against my 991. Carrera 2 (base). My C2 puts out 350 hp @ 7200 rpm where Mario's C2S with its PSE puts out a whopping 400 hp @ 7200 rpm with more torque, PLUS is has been tuned by EuroCharged (giving it potentially upwards of 425-450 hp), has an upgraded performance air intake and #SoulPerformance sports headers.
    I hope you enjoy this video even just a fraction as much as we enjoyed making it! As ever, thanks so much for watching my videos and supporting my channel. I do all of this because of my passion for cars and interacting with like minded car enthusiasts. Keep the comments and chat coming! More videos coming soon. Cheers!

    Yeah, I agree with one of the earlier comments. Unless you are directly racing another car, they are all fun and exciting. My 1999 996 cab stick shift when I bought it new, was super exciting and fun to drive. I sold a 1987 Ferrari Testarossa to buy it, and although a totally different style, it was no less exciting to drive, and Porsche has such a retro sports car feel, that is hard to capture with any other brand. Now I have a 911 Turbo, and although it is faster, I really don’t think other than driving it really hard, that it is any less fun than my 996 base seemed back then. Appreciate what you have today, even if it is an old MG, or any other real sports car, and be satisfied until you are ready for the next one. It’s more about the journey than the arrival.

Constantly watching your channel & others like it plus keeping in regular contact with the Porsche world through forums, 911uk, many local members upgrading their cars regularly, hasn’t helped my state of mind. By the time i get the sensation of speed, i could be on my way to jail. i wouldn't say you made a mistake. Everyone can go fast these days. You have a wonderful car. Some would argue that the base Carrera is the best car to really get the 911 experience. Maybe if you had the manual you would feel more of a connection.

Just to let you know that I installed a CarJoyece Apple Car Play and and Nakita backup camera. It took me some time, but I am very happy with the final result. I plan to install a grill in front bumper to protect the radiators and aluminum pedals. I washed and decontaminated the car (chemical and clay bar), corrected the paint and polished, and then applied a ceramic coating. The car looks good and it is stored in my garage for winter. Pre pandemic these were way more affordable. I remember thinking in late 2019 "oh I'll just wait till these fully loaded 991.1 Carrera S dip down into the high 40s" fully expecting that to happen. Now you would be lucky to find a nice base 3.4 for 55k.

  • @paull3179
    @paull3179 Před 3 lety +2

    991s has plenty of power and great sound with the sport exhaust. It really does not need any aftermarket tuning that could take away the factory smoothness. I have mine stock but did tune my S4 daily driver to well over 450hp.

    • @paull3179
      @paull3179 Před 3 lety +1

      And with torque at 390 it is a monster and you have step lightly on the throttle. It takes away the factory smoothness and it is actually slower accelerating from a start on wet roads as there is too much torque. Sometimes spins the rear wheels or all 4 wheels even when the road is dry so it cannot just be floored from a start.

    Buy a used 911 turbo S and get it over with. Porsche is such a great car as they have few problems and more dealers around than any other high end car company. I bought one in 2018 and you run these cars so hard and they never skip a beat. The punishment they can take is unreal. There are quicker and faster cars out there but i would never trade off the dependability for a couple extra ticks on the timer. Plus if you tuned the turbo S it could be up around 700hp with allwheel drive. Totally awesome.

    I’ve had a rule for some time now that I always buy the biggest engine available- that applies to lawn mowers, washing machines etc etc and cars. My theory is that larger engines are less stressed, last longer, perform better and are worth more if you decide to sell later. With cars the larger engine also often brings a high level of spec. For those reasons I have a 3.4 Boxster S and don’t regret paying a bit more.

    Nah, you didn't make a mistake. Actually the S, even with its mods, calmly walks away, but does not "blow away" the base. Just seeing this video alone makes me prefer to keep my 991.1 C2 for a few years and save up for something actually significantly faster like a 991.2 or 992 base, with a tune. I'm sure by now you have had a few very enjoyable years with your C2 !

    • @AutoAmateur
      @AutoAmateur  Před 3 lety

      No major differences between the suspension but the power and performance of the S is noticeable above the base Carrera. With my new headers and engine tune, my car is maybe putting out 375 hp now but the S will still smoke me.

  • @davidbuchanan1538
    @davidbuchanan1538 Před 4 lety +5

    To reiterate, the 2CS here has been souped up, so it would beat a standard 2CS let alone the base model.
    There’s always a faster Porsche. I’ve a C2 and yes I’d like a 2CS, but if I had that then I’d want the next one up, and so on. Not trying to big up the base model, but it still looks stunning, sounds great and goes like shit off a shovel. It’s still a fast Porsche, just not the fastest.

    My research indicated going from a base 997 base Carrera to a 991.1 base Carrera only increased horse power by 5, from 345 to 350, and that going from a Carrera S 997 to a 991.1 increased horsepower by 15, from 385 to 400. Also, I saw another video comparing the 991.1 base Carrera to a Carrera S had 0-60 times of 4.3 versus 4.2 (practically no difference, although one was a PDK and the other manual and this was from the UK), so I'm not sure about the assertions made in this video.

    Get a 991.2 Carrera base and be done with it. Mine is quicker than the 991.1 4S I had before

    Porsche is the worst for upgrade/model/accessory envy. At some point it never stops, there is always an S, GTS, Turbo, RS3, PASM, Black headlights, Crest in the seat backs - If you gross compare every car, it can drive you nuts.
    You have a nicer car than 99% of America - don't let romp with another test your love for the current car. We kill ourselves going to these "Cars and Coffee" and always think that other ideas are better. Man, just enjoy, bank your excess cash, and get another in 2 to 5 years......

      Definitely true. Even the guys buying what they thought was the top of the mass production models, the GT2RS. Then they come out with a Manthey Racing Nurburgring version.

    So his car goes faster in a straight line...so what? Too easy to get caught up in Porsche's escalator of trims and additional tens of thousands of dollars. I hope you can enjoy your car to the fullest anyway.

    I don’t believe the pricing numbers. That’s what I’m seeing 997.1 to 997.2. Maybe. The .2s command more and the .1s are about $45K (give or take depending on miles, options). Now I don’t track 991 prices, so there is that.
    Now if those prices are accurate... I prefer the style of the 997, but conventional wisdom says buy the newest 911 possible. If they’re accurate I’d go for a 991. Maybe.

      They’re just average prices according to Edmunds.com. They have the 997 averages a little lower. You can find 991.1 C2s as high as $80k or more. All depends on mileage and spec of course.

    It’s pretty clear the base Car was not tuned and not PDK. I enjoyed the video but the comparison was kind of pointless..

      The base car had PDK. The S was tuned yes, and had PDK.
