How to tie Ronnie's Damsel Nymph

  • This fly brings back so many memories for me, it has caught more fish than I care to recall. Ronnie Christie is the man that got me into fishing over 30 years ago and although he is more comfortable behind the sights of a rifle nowadays we still chat. He took the idea from a picture in Trout Fisherman which was a silhouette of a fly. From that Ronnie's Damsel was born, this fly works great from around May through to September. Fished on the point in either a size #12 or #10, simply a proven fish taker.

    Have loved watching you produce such beautiful flies over the last few weeks during lockdown. I got my lads to get me a fly tyers kit for Father's Day and am now well into your methods and crystal clear instruction. Sadly my local water, Patsall Pool, went bust last week but there are plenty of other venues to go at.Ii look forward to getting my first trout on a home tied special.

      Really sad to hear that your local fishery has had to close. Tim, I cant tell you how satisfying it is to hear that you have taken to tying your own flies and that the videos have helped. Tight lines buddy!

    With almost every damsel Nymph that works the key addition seems to be that touch of blue. Even the ole Dawsons olive has that blue throat hackle. Yes many of the adults are blue. Have not seen blue on any actual nymphs. But the trout as ever have that final say and hone in on the blue.

      I think you just have to show them something they haven’t seen.

    I use a damsel pattern that I developed in 1988 and I am still using that pattern. It never changes and it still catches a lot of fish! atb Jim

    Pinching marabou is so important. Nature abhors a straight line. The other point I wanted to mention, for new tyers especially. When you buy your UV resins, buy a good light. Avoid the Chinese knock offs because while they are cheaper, the output lacks the intensity needed to harden your resin and you will end up with an oily sticky finish. The little light Lindsay is using is a really good one. You can purchase a brand name light, like Loon Outdoors, Deer Creek or any other good name and that will do for a long time.

    • @lindsayiflyfish
      @lindsayiflyfish  Před 2 lety

      Sometimes, I spent many years comp fishing and there were a lot of rules, size and adding additional weight. Now I have moved away from that aspect I use beads on many flies.

    Another nice yet simple pattern. Curious if you use a cock or hen partridge Cape?
