How to tie a variation on Peter Harrop's Red Devil

  • There are few in the Army Fly Fishing Federation that won't know the name Peter Harrop. He is a bit of a legend in our little club, always quick with a smile and some banter. Peter and his friend Brian are huge fishing fans and when they are not casting a fly they are often fishing for something else with different tackle.
    Peter came up with this pattern some years back and it was a closely guarded secret for some time. Its a fly that looks out of proportion with the tiny wing and huge head. Do not be fooled though this is a fly that would be in my top ten box any time of the year.
    I have changed it a little but essentially it's the same fly.

    Fantastic to see the whip finish tool come in to play. You've defeated your nemesis.
    I still struggle to get my head around the red devil.

    Great looking fly Lydsay, tied some this morning but substituted red tying thread for #4 Glo brite floss and black marabou for the wing ,still tied short.Yet another variation on a theme, think this style could work well I other colours too,keep up the good work, all the best

    Another nice pattern i fish a similar pattern which came from a mistake trying to do D McPhails Irish Cormorant last year and ended up more with this style of fly it sat in my box and i never went near it as always thought it never looked right next to everything else, i had a slow day last year mid April and opted to try it for the first time and had a good run of fish on it when nothing else was working after slightly playing with different wing colours i found that a light olive wing done like this with a red body was just as effective.

    • @lindsayiflyfish
      @lindsayiflyfish  Před 4 lety +1

      You should try the olive wing with a yellow body in the same style, I think you will be pleased with the results ;-)

    The hen fibre movement adds both movement and life. All colour options like silver with pearl as pin fry. Or green holographic with pearlescent for olive buzzer ie on Bewl. If we don’t try? It could just make the difference on the day.

    That's an interesting fly Lindsay …. have you seen any difference between Peters original and your variation as regards catch rates? Fished as per a Diawl Bach? I will tie a few after todays walk and garden session … stay healthy … Jim

      Hi Jim, It maybe just a confidence thing but nothing comes close to the original. I just blinked it up to make it more appealing to the eye. The fish love the plain red.

      Hi Fred, It can be fished on any number of lines but generally as in a team of four flies on a 22' leader.
