Als Diawl Bach (Before the Red Devil there was this!)

This is a very old pattern that came to the Soldier Palmers team via the team captain at the time, Alan Ward. It was a close hold pattern 15 or so years ago but has fallen out of favour of late. It has pretty much been replaced by a fly from Peter Harrop called the Red Devil, which is much simpler to tie. I still have a few of these in my box though down to #14 and they have dug me out of a hole more than once. If you have the inclination it is worth the time and effort to whittle a few up they will not disapoint!

Used to be tied on B175 and B160, not sure of the weight of the hook your using now mate..B160 was used for when the fish was close to the surface.. Size 12 and 14 too.

Hi Al, Yes this would be probably equivalent to a B175 in old money. All my flies are barbless now though.

What’s doing really well for me is Craig Barr’s pin fry Diawl Bach it’s been a killer for me about 90% of fish I’ve caught has been on it size 12 on the top dropper I would put a size 10 on the point with a buzzer middle dropper nope every fish on the top dropper either slow static to fast stripping bang every time 🐟🎣😁
